Kimberly yet again woke up in a sweat, but this time had Jason leaning over to her, a hand on her nearest shoulder which he had been shaking to wake her up.
"Sorry, nightmare," Kim said trying to brush off just being woken up by Jason. She was now sat up in her bed composing herself.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Jason asked looking at her concerned.
Kimberly thought back to what she could remember of the dream. It was the same scenario as the previous nights. She didn't need to go in to the detail of it again, and also bring up that she was dreaming of Tommy to add to the complication of things, albeit not in a romantic way.
"Ahh, no, not really. Just everything that I know is waiting for me after this weekend is over," Kim said laying back down. She had to admit that it was nice being able to be honest to Jason about the dream, but she couldn't help feeling self conscious that he knew.
Jason nodded understandingly. "We'l get through it together, Kim. You're not alone in this," Kim looked over at Jason and could just about make out his face. That's what she was worried about. How she had now involved them in her drama from Florida. Growing up, Mr and Mrs Scott had helped bring her up, Mrs Scott looking after Kim after school whilst her parents were at work. She would never forgive herself if anything happened to them whilst she was away, leaving her car as a magnet to Patrick.
"Thanks Jase. What time is it?" Kim asked not wanting to talk of it anymore. Fumbling for her watch light she saw the time, "Gosh, it's only 4, I'm going to try and catch some more sleep before we get woken up by Billy no doubt." Kim rolled over to face the canvas of the tent, hoping that Jason would leave the conversation there. There was a delay in movement from Jason, but thankfully for Kim she eventually heard a mumbled "ok then," followed shortly after by the the rustle of his sleeping bag as he moved back in to a laying down position. For what felt like an eternity, Kimberly lay silently crying, only risking a movement to wipe the tears once she heard the soft rumble of Jason's snoring. She knew Jason was just trying to be supportive, but every time he said something nice it just brought her an over-whelming amount of guilt.
Kimberly tried with all her might to clear her mind of thoughts of Patrick, but was unable too. She just couldn't see how she was going to get around this without getting any of her friends involved, or worse, anyone hurt. Would it be easier if she just ran away once the weekend had ended? Got on the road again and then abandon the car somewhere. Give it 5 years or so and she might be able to return back to Angel Grove once again? Kimberly lay pondering over her options, each one becoming more ridiculous and un-achievable. Why couldn't they just be rangers again and deal with the real life baddies in the same way that they would had it been Goldar or Scorpina or something. Because that's not how life goes Kim.
Noticing that the tent was getting warmer and lighter as the morning sun began to rise, she decided to get up and crept out of the tent. The air was still and peacefully tranquil with the only noise breaking the silence being the calls of the birds in the neighbouring trees. Kimberly took a big breath in and allowed her lungs to fill with the fresh mountain air. Thinking back to how she handled her anxiety when she first moved to Florida, Kimberly remembered that she had always found yoga to be a good coping mechanism. It had been a while since Kimberly had done it, but knew she could do the basics and it would be a good distraction to her own intrusive thoughts. Realising the air was a lot fresher than she initially thought, Kimberly snuck back in the tent to grab a sweater and towel for her to put on the floor as the grass was carrying the mornings dew.
A short walk into the trees away from the clearing in which they had set up camp, Kimberly found a break in the trees which over-looked the valley, even more picturesque as the sun turned the morning sky to a beautiful shade of pink. Kimberly laid her towel down and took in her view, proving to be enough of a distraction that she finally felt her shoulders release the tension they were carrying. Sitting down in a crossed legged position Kimberly closed her eyes and reached up with her arms taking a deep breath in, blocking out her thoughts and surroundings, and focused on her breathing. About 10 minutes in to her stretches, Kimberly was so zoned out she didn't hear the crack of twigs as someone walked towards her from behind.
"Morning Kim,"
Kimberly opened one eye and looked to where the sound was coming from. What was he doing up so early? She for sure would have put her life savings, not that she had any, on Billy being the first up.
"What has you up at the crack of dawn?" Tommy asked Kimberly, as he sat down on the grass next to her, knees raised with his arms resting on them. He wiped the sweat dripping from his forehead off with the back of his hand.
"Was about to ask you the same thing, you were never the early bird." Kimberly questioned.
Tommy feigned being hurt at Kim's words to which Kim laughed. The laughter felt good.
"I'l have you know I am now the earliest bird of the group." Tommy knew that Kim had been referring to one of his well known trait's as a teenager of over-sleeping and being late, "I usually wake up around this time anyway, and find the best way for clearing a slightly foggy head that's been self-induced is a morning jog." Tommy replied.
"My, my, Kat certainly has whipped you in to shape. Can't say I have ever felt the need to go for a run after a night of alcohol" Kimberly laughed back.
"No... I definitely think I'm in the minority on this one.. And hey! I like to think opening my own Dojo taught me a few things, and making the most of the whole morning was one of them so I will take full recognition for that thank you!... So, what are we doing?"
Kimberly then talked Tommy through her morning yoga set, laughing at Tommy's surprising lack of flexibility. For someone who could throw a high kick and split mid air, he certainly was rusty this morning. As they wrapped up their set Tommy took a moment to laugh at himself, "Well, my flexibility has definitely got a bit rusty since we packed in the ranger activities." Kimberly laughed at his comment. She was surprised at how naturally they were able to pick up from where they had left, minus the romance.
"Maybe you just need to be spurred on by a taunt from one of Lord Zedd's goons" to which they both laughed. Kimberly then launched herself in to a reinactment of Rita "You call that a Tree Pose? I've seen more flexibility from a peice of deadwood floating down a river" to which they both roared with laughter. As the laughter and conversation naturally came to an end, Kimberly turned herself to face Tommy and broached the conversation she had been attempting since she had arrived at the campsite, "Whilst I have you to myself, can we just discuss the elephant in the room?"
Tommy sighed, rearranging himself so he was sat looking at Kimberly leaning back on one arm, "Kim, you really don't need to go over this. I've had time to heal, we were young, it was long distance. I think it was naive on both our parts to think we were ever able going to make that work," Tommy said defensively. He winced inside as his words came out a lot harsher than he meant. He saw Kim's slight facial reaction to his comments and regretted them.
"I didn't mean it like that-"
"No, you're right," Kim said swallowing back the lump in her throat that had just appeared. She had surprised herself at how upset she was at his comment, but far from wanting to let him know Kimberly put on a front, "Long distance, and that." Batting tears back, Kim stood up and started picking up the towel that she was sat on. "I reckon the other's will be starting to get up now, I'm going to head back."
Kimberly went to step away when Tommy stood up and caught her arm, "Let me try saying that again, that sounded heartless."
"Tommy, you don't owe me anything. I was the one who ended the relationship. What I did want to say though, is I'm sorry. I had the best times with you and I should have been more open with you. Probably not the best time to get in to it as no doubt Tanya will coming sniffing around soon, but I was struggling in Florida, and someone was able to distract me from you for just long enough that I thought it was a good idea to end things. I know you're with Kat now, but I would really like it if we could be friends." Tommy looked at Kimberly confused, a hundred questions doing overtime running through his head. Did that mean she was now single? Who had managed to distract her? What was she struggling with? Whilst he was with Kat, there was still a part of him that longed to know who this other person had been.
"Who was it?" Tommy asked abruptly.
"Ah, just some guy. Really not relevant now," Trying to avoid the need to bring Patrick up again for the second time that morning.
"Not relevant? Kim, you allowed this person of so called 'no relevance' to come between us,"
Kimberly sighed, "Fine. It was just, some guy called Patrick. We didn't last long and it was definitely sugar coated shit that he was feeding me with if that makes you feel any better,"
"Well, no. Not really. Kim, we could have been together still if it wasn't for him."
Kimberly wasn't expecting Tommy to react in this way. She locked eyes with him and was once again enchanted by his beautifully brown eyes. Why would he be thinking of him and her still being together? He was with Kat, and they were happy? Kim wanted to diffuse whatever way this conversation was about to turn. She felt like she was on the verge of tears again, happy and yet frustrated tears.
"I know, hands- Tommy" Tommy couldn't help but feel his heart flutter as he heard Kim nearly slip in to old habits by calling him his pet name.
"Can we just work on being friends again? You're with Kat now and there's no point of us living with 'What If's?' I haven't been in your life for a few years, and I really could do with my old multicoloured spandex loving friend back in mine," Kimberly asked.
Tommy felt conflicted. He had tried to push thoughts of Kimberly out of his mind ever since she sent the infamous letter, and on the whole had been successful. Admittedly, the distraction of Kat throwing herself at him had definitely been a benefit, and whilst that sounds callous and that Tommy didn't really care for Kat, as he really did, she just wasn't Kim. She had been there for him when the shit hit the fan, and he made her happy. But, seeing Kimberly again yesterday. It had just brought all the emotions flooding back to him. Granted, she didn't look her normal self, the glow and charismatic air that possessed her before she had left was gone, but to him she was still as beautiful as ever. Either way, he knew he had missed the friendship he had with Kimberly and was just as keen to get that back on track.
"You got it," Tommy said and leaned in to give Kim a friendly hug. Kimberly returned the hug wrapping her arms round his broad muscly back. "And if you ever feel up to it, or want to talk about it more, you can let me know what you were struggling with in Florida. I wouldn't want you to go back there and still have the same issues. I obviously wasn't supportive enough back then but I want to be here for you now." The realisation dawned on Kim that everyone else, other than who she travelled here with, were expecting her to be returning to Florida after this weekend. Instead of replying and getting caught up in a lie, she sufficed with a nod against Tommy's chest and opted to enjoy the moment she was in. She had missed his strong arms, and his subtle scent of aftershave. She had always felt at her most safe and secure being wrapped up in them and that feeling hadn't changed. Toyed with the feeling of not wanting that moment to end, but also not wanting to linger in the hug, Kimberly reluctantly pulled away from him.
"Come on, let's get back to the others," and the two of them walked towards the tents, discussing what they thought the day ahead would bring them.
