BA hadn't been having the greatest night to begin with, with the stupid scuba gear and whole tote of other things he had to bring, but after he cut through the chain link fence and finally reached completely dry land rather than having waves bashing his back for fifteen minutes, and saw the expansive minefield he'd have to make his way through, he'd pretty much had enough.
He complained to himself as he took a look at the time, seeing that it was only 11:14 and that he had more than half an hour to get through the football sized minefield in front of him. After a quick breather, BA unloaded the metal detector that had been given to him earlier, made sure it was dry, and switched it on. Giving a sigh and shaking his head, he got to work.
It was slow and hard, and annoying, but BA slowly and methodically started locating mines and gingerly placing a flasher next to it before moving on. He had a few close calls and nearly stepped on several mines, but he continued on unscathed. The only reason that he hadn't complained more to Hannibal about getting this job was because he wouldn't have to be with that crazy fool the whole time. He snickered to himself imagining what Face was probably already going through.
After what seemed like forever, BA finally made it to the far edge of the field, and checked to see that it was now 11:53 and that he still had several minutes to wait before he could get too close to the electrified wall in front of him. And BA thought of his team's roles. Hannibal was up high high in the hotel above the casino-or more accurately, he was out of the casino with Mrs. Parton by this time. Face and Murdock were probably near him, maybe already in the saferoom, and maybe nearly there (hopefully not stuck or dead because then in turn he would die). Lastly, Amy was acting as a distraction-a role that might be seen as less glamorous, but if BA knew anything about Hannibal's plans, it was that they never went according to plan, but they still somehow worked. So BA figured her distraction would probably end up being really important somehow and left it at that.
As he thought, he double-checked his gear, found a few more mines with his detector and used up the few remaining flashers he had, and then pulled out the heavy duty welder and stepped up to the wall in his scuba gear, his oxygen tank and other gear on the ground nearby. He kneeled next to the metal wall at 11:59.
When 12:00 AM hit, BA lit the welder.
But it didn't light. BA tried again, sparking the machine in his hands, but it still didn't light. BA's frustration slowly grew as he tried again and again to spark the flame, and again and again it refused to light.
A minute ticked by, and then two minutes, and though he had already tried many times, the large welder would not fire up. A wave of relief washed over him when he at last was able to spark a flame into existence, but it went out a second later , much to BA's steadily growing annoyance. A few seconds later, he managed to get the flame to reappear, but it was only briefly. After the third time the flame successfully lit before sputtering out, BA was ready to punch something, and after giving the machine in his hands an angry shake, he tried again.
Finally, the flame lit, and didn't immediately die out. With satisfaction, he glanced at the clock to see he had lost over three minutes, and it was 12:03. Without another thought, BA turned his attention to the wall, and was grateful to not feel electricity shooting through his body when he made contact, because it meant he could keep his life, but more importantly (though he wouldn't want to admit it) that his two comrades were still alive and kicking in at least some capacity.
To make up for lost seconds, BA made the new entrance to the vault as small as it could be with him still able to fit through it, since he knew if he could fit, his two smaller companions would have no trouble slipping through.
As the minutes ticked on, BA felt the urgency pressing on him, and hurried as quickly as he could. When at last he had connected the end of the melted path through the metal with it's beginning, he quickly turned off his welder and removed the scuba goggles he had used to shield his eyes from the fire, sitting on his pockets and kicking with both feet as hard as he could, hoping he hadn't gone too fast through the thick metal layer.
The makeshift entrance gave way after a little struggle to remain stationary, and BA felt a rush of air around him as he peered inside the saferoom, looking for his friends. The sight that greeted him was both confusing and worrying.
The small white room was mostly empty save a desk and chair for a guard, a bench against a wall, and a table on the right wall that had boxes on it, and several weapons layed out next to the boxes. At the foot of the table, two men (probably guards) were sprawled on the ground.
The thing that had BA hoisting himself down through the hole as quickly as he could was the other two men on the ground seemingly lifeless near to the left wall of the room that held an enormous metal safe door.
Face was crumpled and limp leaning against the large door, and Murdock was several feet closer flat on the ground.
Neither of them were breathing.
Before BA rushed to his nearest friend, he reached back outside and pulled his oxygen tank into the saferoom. He ran to kneel next to Murdock and placed the mouth he had used to get through the water before the minefield onto his friends face, pushing the crazy man's chest to force him to breath the oxygen being pumped into him. After several heartrending seconds, Murdock's eyes fluttered and he stared up groggily at BA, clearly confused at how he had gotten on the floor.
But BA didn't let him ask anything, instead rushing to the metal safe door and to Face, repeating his actions without bothering to check for a pulse. When Face didn't immediately respond, BA only continued pumping air into him, and when at last he stirred, BA sighed a huge sigh of relief. By the time that Face had opened his eyes with a moan, Murdock had managed to scoot over to them, leaning against the wall next to the recovering con man.
"Thanks, BA." Murdock sounded really out of breath, which BA understood, since they had both been basically dead when he found them.
"Uhhh. . ." Face pushed the oxygen mask away from his face as he voiced his discomfort, "I feel. . . like I just. . . just got run over by a tank. . ."
"What happened? Are you guys OK?" BA helped the two of them get on their feet, and Face waved him off. After a moment of heavy breathing, Face continued to input the safe password that he had almost completed. He had memorized the combination when they had recorded it from Amy's magical bill. BA watched as the door made a loud click, and then slowly swung open after the three of them shuffled out of its way.
BA almost expected there to be something else, a bunch of guards or a machine gun triggered by the door, but nothing happened. They stood in silence for a moment together and recovered from the last several stressful minutes, on both their parts, BA was sure.
Finally, Murdock spoke up, taking a slightly shaky step towards the large duffle bag that BA had found him by, leaning down and gingerly pulling out a small and tightly packed explosive, "Weel, comrades. . ." He gulped another breath but managed to stay in character, "eet looks as eef we haf-haf but to set a timer and then. . . we can finally leaf dees place forever." He gave an open smile and breathed as held the bomb in his hand up for them to see.
BA could only growl at his lanky friend, too happy that the pilot was still alive to be really angry, and so he strode over and grabbed the bomb from Murdock's hand, turning and walking carefully into the vault, still a little unsure that there wasn't some kind of trap waiting for him.
It seemed safe enough, and was a relatively small room, table filling most of it that was piled high with counterfeit money, some of it spilled on the floor. He knelt and carefully set the timer on the explosive before tucking it under the table. Some sort of large metal computer looking thing was also sitting under the table, and BA grabbed it and hauled it out of the small vault with him, figuring it must be the device-"The D-Machine"- that they were supposed to try and recover.
"Looks-looks like that's everything." Face gave a very obvious sigh of relief, and Murdock nodded to himself, clearly agreeing.
"Yeah-let's get out of here. Hannibal and Amy should be out by now." BA and his two friends all automatically gave one another the same look: the look that said there was no way that Hannibal and Amy had both made it out of the casino without something going wrong.
And so without needing to say any more, they all walked to the wall, and BA shoved the device out the hole he had made in the wall before hoisting himself up and out. He helped each of his still relatively breathless friends out, and Face picked up his gear for him. Making sure they had everything and also that they didn't accidentally step on one of the mines that BA had carefully flagged. BA thought that it felt like an eternity ago when he had placed the flashers, when in reality it hadn't even been an hour.
After they made it through the minefield, BA set The D-Machine down on the ground and retrieved his bag from Face, grabbing the rubber raft and wading through the hole he had made in the chain link fence to blow it up. He hadn't needed the raft on his way in, since it had been too early in the night to risk rafting to the saferoom, but now that the three of them were heading back together, they would use it.
By the time the raft was filled with air, Face and Murdock had gotten The D-Machine into his water-proof bag and closed it, which they gave to him and then followed him into the water, through the fence, and onto the raft. They would have to loop around to get back to the casino, and it would probably take them closer to 15 minutes.
"What time is it?" BA asked, and Murdock answered while Face rubbed his face,
"12:11 PM, comrade."
BA just hoped that Hannibal didn't get into too much trouble before they got there so he could smack some heads together.
Hey! I'm trying to get this fic done and done as soon as I can, so here's another chapter! I hope I did BA justice, I have a hard time with him sometimes.
Thank you again SO MUCH to those who have read and reviewed/followed/favorited and even just viewed! IDK how far I would be without your support but it's certainly not as far as I am, so thanks again peeps! Hope you enjoyed!
