Hiro shot out of bed, tears stinging at the corners of his eyes. He did his best to breathe deeply and blink them away, but regardless of his efforts, it didn't work and tears fell anyway.
He'd been dreaming about the fire an awful lot these past weeks and he wasn't sure why. He heard footsteps come up the stairs and scrambled to dry his face of any tears, but was unsuccessful.
Tadashi stood there, dressed and ready for classes. He was holding a plate of breakfast and a glass of water. Trailing behind him was Baymax, blinking curiously. His expression became one of concern when he saw his brother crying. He walked over while Hiro did his best to dry his tears again, but seeing Tadashi alive and well seemed to make him cry harder.
Tadashi set down the plate and glass on the nightstand and wrapped his arms around Hiro, running his hands through his hair. "It's okay, it's alright, I'm here."
Hiro held him tight like it was the last time he'd ever see him, even though logically, he knew it wasn't. He couldn't form any proper words, so he just sat there. Baymax joined the impromptu hug session, though he wasn't sure when.
"Are you alright?" Tadashi asked softly.
Hiro hesitated. He didn't want to worry his brother, but that train may have already left the station. "Nightmares. I- the fire.. I keep thinking I lost you."
It wasn't like Tadashi had gotten permanently hurt, or worse, died. He'd spent a few weeks in the hospital, sure, but he was fine now, so why was Hiro so upset all of a sudden..? It'd been a little over a year now.
"I'm right here, I'm right here. I'm not gonna go anywhere anytime soon, okay?" Tadashi said.
"You have class," Hiro muttered.
Hiro also had class, but he didn't mention it. Tadashi probably already knew anyway.
"It'll be fine. It's one day anyway, and it's still the first week. I'm sure whatever we're doing, it doesn't warrant me leaving you alone if you don't want me to," Tadashi said.
Hiro didn't respond, just pushed his face into Tadashi's shirt.
They stayed like that for a while, Baymax patting Hiro's head. Another set of footsteps came up the stairs, Aunt Cass.
"Are you boys alright?" she asked.
Tadashi looked over at her, then back at Hiro. "We're fine."
Cass didn't look convinced but she sighed and accepted the answer. "If you want to be on time for school, you should head out soon."
"We'll keep that in mind. Thank you, Cass," Tadashi said, although he seemed a little stiff talking to her. Hiro chalked it up to the state Tadashi had found him in and didn't pay further attention to it.
"We should.. Probably go," Hiro said.
"You sure you're up for it?" Tadashi asked.
Hiro hesitated but said, "Yes."
"Alright," Tadashi said. "Get ready, I can take you."
Hiro hummed in agreement.
The day went on with Hiro being dropped off at his own classes before Tadashi left to attend his own. As Hiro walked into class, he noted that he was late and everyone was already packing up their stuff. However, he was only ten minutes late and they shouldn't have been packing up their stuff.
He looked around the class and just decided to approach the nearest person. He was a lanky man with scruffy brown hair and a prosthetic leg. He wore a ridiculous amount of layered shirts, although he managed to pull it off well.
"Hey uh, I got here late, like, just now, so I don't know why everyone's packing up early. Do you mind telling me?" Hiro asked.
The man eyed Baymax, who shadowed Hiro, curiously but quickly turned his focus back to Hiro. "We're working with some of the students at the nearby academy today. They've got more space in their classrooms though, so we're all moving over there for the day."
"Oh, right," Hiro remembered something about working with the high school that was a few minutes away, but not quite well enough to have expected that answer.
"I gotta ask, what's with that?" the guy said, pointing at Baymax.
"Hello, I am Baymax," Baymax introduced. "A personal healthcare companion."
"Huh. That's neat," the man said, inspecting the robot.
"Yeah, he is," Hiro grinned proudly.
The man went back to packing his things and slung his bag over his shoulder. "Is he yours?"
"He technically belongs to my brother Tadashi- he built Baymax in the first place- but he follows me around usually," Hiro explained.
The two started walking out together, following the crowd of students making their way toward the parking lot. The academy was a five minute walk from the college campus, shorter by drive. There was a bus here from the academy for those that didn't have their own transport.
The two of them filed into the same bus, chatting about Baymax's construction the whole way in, and switching to current projects on the bus. Soon enough, they'd pulled into the Academy's parking lot.
There were academy students milling about, some with a free period, some heading to their next class, some skipping. One, a girl with shoulder length black hair with waves in it, was unfortunate enough to be caught up in the flock of college students. She did her best to bat away all of the older people but couldn't quite escape.
Baymax shuffled off to help her, standing beside her. He'd noticed people tried to avoid bumping into him, for whatever reason, and so he decided this was the way to help. He put his hand on her shoulder and guided her out of the crowd. Hiro and the other boy pushed through the thinning crowds to follow Baymax and find out what he was doing.
When they got there, Baymax was already giving the rather disheveled but still unimpressed girl his standard spiel about being a personal healthcare companion and whatnot. Baymax turned his head to face Hiro and the other boy -man, Hiro really had to learn his name- and did his little circular wave. "Hello."
"Is this yours?" the girl asked, pointing at Baymax.
"Close enough, I guess," Hiro said, exasperated.
"Thanks for the save, marshmallow man," she said, patting Baymax's arm.
Baymax, relatively used to the odd names people liked to give him, said, "You are welcome."
"I'm Hiro, by the way," Hiro said to her. He realized that he hadn't given the boy his name either, so this covered that as well.
"I'm Cassandra. Most people just call me Cass though," she said.
"That's my Aunt's name," Hiro said, thinking aloud.
"I dunno, then don't call me that," Cassandra said.
"I didn't mean-," Hiro fumbled around with his words a bit before the boy put his hand on his shoulder.
"My name is Hiccup, it's nice to meet you," the boy said.
That… Was a weird name, but whatever. Hiro had quite a few friends with odd names.
She stared at him for a moment, clearly trying to figure out whether or not he was joking. Finally, she shrugged and said, "I should get going."
"See you around, Cass," Hiro said.
Baymax waved. "Goodbye."
"Bye," Hiccup said.
They all made their way to their respective classes, Hiccup, Hiro, and Baymax all heading there together.
Later in the day, when Hiro arrived home, Tadashi and Aunt Cass were already there, sitting on the sofa and eating ice cream, watching a movie. Hiro happily joined them.
Wasabi opened the door to the club room. The environmental awareness and protection club was a new club open to both academy students and college students, and he was eager to sign up. The room he walked into was relatively small, but there weren't many people that it had to accommodate for. It was disappointing, but at the very least it wouldn't be over crowded.
A round man with blonde hair walked up to him. "Hello! I'm Fishlegs, are you here to sign up?"
His first thought was that the man had a very odd name, although he couldn't exactly complain because he too went by something that wasn't really supposed to be a name at all.
"I'm Wasabi, good to meet you, and yes, I am!" he smiled. "Where are the sign up sheets?"
Fishlegs handed him a clipboard with a list of names on them. Wasabi took his own pen, one that he kept on him at all times, and signed the sheet.
"Do you know when we're starting?" Wasabi asked as he was handing the clipboard back to Fishlegs.
"Shouldn't be too long, I think. Feel free to grab a snack from the table and a seat," Fishlegs said.
"Thank you," Wasabi said. He didn't take one of the snacks, he didn't trust food that anyone could just.. Go and touch. However, he did take a seat.
"Two on two matches for warmups today!" the basketball coach yelled to the college team. "I want everyone to hustle! Get going!"
As everyone paired up, Ruffnut and Tuffnut stood and watched everyone scramble to find a friend. They were already a pair, of course, so they didn't need to do anything except fistbump to indicate they would absolutely win this. Eventually, everyone paired up successfully. The coach had each pair line up in front of her and started pairing off the matches.
"Thorstons, with Miss Tomago and Mister Marilyn," the coach said.
A basketball was thrown to a girl with black hair that had some dyed purple streaks. The boy standing next to her, unremarkable in appearance with a forgettable face, yanked the ball out of her hands. She glared at him and elbowed his side, but he held tight to the ball.
"Brat," she muttered.
The twins looked at each other, devious smirks on their faces. These two would not work well together, and if they had to guess, they'd say that these two had paired up last and unwillingly. They were certain to win.
The game started and it was clear the twins were correct in their initial assumption. These two, Gogo and Jean, were a train wreck. Jean was cocky and prideful and moved slowly. His only advantage was that he was tall and strong. Gogo on the other hand was focused and quick. She was agile and prepared for anything. Unfortunately, so were the twins.
When it came down to it, it may as well have been a two v one, for all Jean was useful. Ruffnut and Tuffnut, predictably, ended up winning. Gogo did get her revenge though. On the last stretch of the game, Gogo had the ball and made a pass to Jean, but aimed a little too low and threw a little too hard and ended up hitting Jean in a very soft spot. He was sent home.
After that, the twins approached the girl.
"That was awesome," Ruffnut said.
"Hel yeah it was!" Tuffnut agreed.
She smirked. "Thanks. You two didn't do too bad yourselves. Although, you could stand to be faster."
"We'll keep that in mind," Tuffnut said.
He and his sister shared A Look, one that carried a whole conversation with it.
"You wanna go get dinner with us?" Ruffnut asked.
"Sure, if you're paying," Gogo said.
The two threw their arms over her shoulders. "Oh, this'll be fun."
Here's the second chapter! Jean isn't important and probably won't show up again, I just needed someone to jerk around a bit. I don't actually know anything about anything about basketball so… Don't yell at me? Sports just aren't my thing. Also! Tadashi's alive! Obviously jdjsj I debated with myself about Plot Reasons why he'd be alive, but it was always my intention to bring him back. If you notice anyone who isn't a main character being out of character or stiff or unrealistic, there's a reason, I promise. If you notice any of the main characters doing any of that, yell at me. I realize this chapter was really HTTYD and BH6 centered, but at least we got a bit of Cass in there?
Thanks for reading! 3
