The poster outside the auditorium door advertised the school play, which would be a (relatively student friendly version) of Hamilton. Eugene, of course, wanted the main part of Alexander Hamilton himself, although he'd take one of the other characters if necessary. He'd listened to the soundtrack several times since they'd announced it as the school play and had memorized the majority of the lyrics.
He made his way into the auditorium to find a ton of students there. Okay, so maybe this wouldn't be as easy to get the main part as he thought. Whatever, he could still do it.
A boy walked onto the stage. He was broad shouldered with dark hair and a short stature. He introduced himself as Snotlout -and Eugene thought he had a horrible name- and was…. Not very good at singing. He was overconfident and somehow managed to miss every single note. He had all the people paying attention covering their ears, but he didn't seem to notice.
Not soon enough, he finished and looked out to his audience. "Well? I got the part, of course, so how soon are the first rehearsals?"
The directors all shared a look. One of them spoke up. "Mr. Jorgenson, we can't decide here and now on parts. Please, sit down."
He rolled his eyes but obeyed. A few more people down the line and a blonde guy stepped on stage. He said his name was Fred. He looked very relaxed with the whole thing, as if he wasn't on a stage with maybe a hundred students in front of him. He was certainly doing better than Snotlout. He missed a couple notes, but he didn't stutter or anything.
Quite a few more students later, and quite a few more minutes later, it was Eugene's turn and he was so much more nervous than he thought he'd be. Granted, he wasn't nervous enough to think he might screw up. He'd do wonderfully, no matter what. He introduced himself, blah blah blah, and finally got to the good part: the acting.
He fumbled the lyrics a bit, accidentally said the wrong word, but he caught himself before he could do too much damage. Overall, he thought he did great.
The directors dismissed everyone almost an hour later, saying they'd have the parts posted on the Monday two weeks from now.
Varian and Danny made their way through the halls to the general engineering classroom, where they were working on a project with students from the nearby college. The two argued jokingly about Varian's blue streak. Danny had asked how he'd dyed it and Varian insisted that he hadn't, it just grew like that.
It'd been almost two weeks since the first day, and although their friendship was relatively new, they felt comfortable. Varian hadn't really had friends like this, who he knew were around because they liked him. Sure, there was Rapunzel, but he still felt that at least some part of her friendship was only there because she felt bad for breaking her promise to him. He didn't want to, but he did. Cass and Eugene were friends with her, therefore they were friendly with him.
Danny didn't have any obligation to be around Varian. He just.. Enjoyed his company. They'd exchanged phone numbers on the Wednesday after they met (and Varian had had a small existential crisis about how he knew how to use a phone so well, but wasn't sure why) and had gone out for lunch that Saturday.
They reached the classroom soon after. The students were comfortable enough to work without the teacher in the room -class hadn't started yet- because they'd been working on the project for a week already.
Varian and Danny made their way to the seats they'd chosen every time they came in -center row, to the left, near the window- and put their stuff down. They spotted a white robot, made of some sort of vinyl.
This robot wasn't new, in fact it had been there every single time they'd had this particular class. They'd figured out it'd belonged to one of the college students, a young looking boy with messy black hair, and they (the robot and the boy) had been topics of conversation quite a few times. Neither of them had actually ever asked about the robot or talked to the boy.
"Do you think it'd be rude to ask him about the robot?" Danny asked Varian.
"You don't even know his name," Varian pointed out.
"Yeah, well neither do you," Danny said. "Besides, that could be a good conversation starter."
"'Hi what's your name and why do you have a giant robot?'?" Varian said.
"Phrasing needs work, but yes, exactly," Danny said.
"You know what? Go for it," Varian said.
"I will, then," Danny said.
Varian, in a show of absolutely maturity, stuck out his tongue at his friend. Danny copied him, already walking towards the two.
He sat down at the table the boy (and another man with a prosthetic leg) was sitting at and stuck out his hand. "Hi, I'm Danny."
The boy blinked at his sudden arrival but gathered his composure quickly. "I'm Hiro."
"Hello, I am Baymax," the robot stated, well, robotically.
"My friend and I wanna know about your robot dude," Danny said, gesturing over to Varian as he spoke.
Varian waved when Danny did that, although he couldn't hear the conversation. The other man rifled through his folders, but couldn't seem to find whatever he was looking for.
"I'll be back in a moment," he said.
Hiro nodded to him and then turned his attention back to Danny. "This is Baymax. He's a medical robot my brother invented."
"Nice," Danny said and got up to inspect the robot.
Let it be known that although Danny was getting taller every year and would likely eventually become Tall, he was still of average height. He almost had to jump to properly get a look at Baymax's eye cameras, and stood on his tiptoes.
Hiro talked him through (rambled on about) Baymax's construction and programming. Danny pressed his face against the vinyl when he realized that it wasn't completely opaque to get a view of the inner workings of the robot. Baymax allowed the inspection and patted his head once he was done. It was a gesture he wasn't quite sure how to feel about receiving from a robot.
Danny looked over at Varian with a smug grin. Varian rolled his eyes, but he was holding back a smile anyway.
Hiro caught their little exchange and said, "You said your friend wanted to know about Baymax too, right? You can bring him over."
Danny nodded and confirmed. He walked back over to Varian. "You wanna go meet the robot?"
"Yes."
Varian met the robot.
Hiro ran through the same ramble about Baymax that he did with Danny, except this time, Varian asked questions about everything. When did Hiro's brother start the project? When did he finish? What could Baymax do? What were his protocols for different medical situations? For almost every question Varian asked, Hiro had an answer.
Soon, the brunette boy from earlier came back. He introduced himself as Hiccup. Since the table was big enough for quite a few people, Hiro and Hiccup offered to let Varian and Danny sit with them through the class period. They accepted.
The people cheered as the Gifted Academy girl's track team won the first meet of the year. It was only a few weeks into the school year, so it wasn't a particularly serious meet, but it was still a win.
The coach gathered all of her players to the bleachers, people still rushing around and excitement still flowing. The event was over, but the team wasn't going home just yet. It was a tradition for the team to go out to one of the local diners after each game. As the girl who'd solidified their win, Cassandra Espinosa got to choose which diner it was.
Naturally, she chose her favorite diner, M and N's Apple Pie Diner. It was a small one, run by a couple named Mary and Nyssa. She'd been going there with her dad since she was little. The team piled onto the bus, with her sitting in the very back. She hadn't really talked to anyone on the team, so she didn't sit with anyone. Intentionally, at least.
Surprisingly enough, a boy sat down next to her. He had bright white hair and a hoodie, and even though Cass didn't know who was supposed to be on the girl's track team, he was clearly not one of them.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"Oh!" he looked a little startled that she noticed him, as if he were supposed to be invisible or something. "Hi, I'm Jack."
"Cassandra," she said. "What are you doing?"
"I wanted to come along," Jack said.
"You aren't on the team. This is a team celebration," Cass said, as if he were dumb.
He shrugged. "Most people don't really pay attention to me being around."
"Yikes," Cass said. She almost felt bad for the guy.
"Doesn't really matter, I guess," he said, in a way that indicated that he didn't want to admit it but it really did matter. "Where are we going anyway?"
"Diner, to celebrate that win," Cassandra said, getting more used to the idea of him being there.
A couple girls, one blonde, one redhead, sat across from the two.
"Sweater weather! It's you," the redhead said in a thick scottish accent.
"Sweater weather?" Jack asked, amused.
"Ya didn't tell us your name," the girl defended.
"It's Jack," Jack said.
"That's.. A much more generic name than I was expecting," the blonde said and then turned her attention to Cass. "Congrats on that final play, by the way."
"Thanks," Cassandra smiled. "You did pretty good too."
Cass may not have known her name, but she recognized the girl well enough. "I'm Cassandra."
"Astrid."
"I'm Merida!"
They chatted on their way to the diner. They had a wonderful time, eating and celebrating. It was dark when they finally shared numbers and parted ways. When Cassandra stepped outside the diner to walk to her dad's car, she felt the cool chill of the night on her nose and thought of that old expression. What was it? Jack Frost nipping at your nose? How funny, she'd met someone with the name Jack today.
She closed her eyes and leaned her head against the chilled glass of the car window. Fall was here already, and it'd crept up like a twist in a dream.
