VII
A King and His Queen
Kat felt she was having deja vu all over again. She was back in that fight over nine years ago, watching brother fight brother. Reliving the moment when Dante impaled his brother and was about to end his life. All he had to do was pierce his heart. She knew he was close, Vergil's scream was loud enough for her to know. She wanted to scream for him to stop like she once had. She wanted to beg him to leave Vergil alive. Because like she had all those years ago, she loved him. She loved Vergil and a world without Vergil wasn't much of a world at all.
The white flecks in Dante's hair were starting to take over. Almost in an instant, ebony was overtaken by silver white hair. She knew his Devil Trigger had taken over. Vergil groaned and watched as Rebellion was pulled from his chest, his brother gearing up to kill him when he watched as Bonnie's hand flew out.
"No!" she cried, magic bursting from her as she sent a powerful aneurysm Dante's way. He groaned and dropped Rebellion, the blade cutting rather close to looping off Vergil's head. It left only a scar on Vergil's cheek and he watched as his brother fell to his knees holding his head. With a wave of her hand, Rebellion was in her grasp and she removed the spell from Dante.
Dante gasped as he recovered and turned towards his wife.
"Everyone out." Bonnie spoke, keeping her eyes on her husband.
"Bonnie..." Caroline whispered.
"Mom," Vera muttered.
Bonnie looked at her daughter. "Outside," she whispered in a softer tone. She bent down and kissed her daughter's forehead. "I need you to keep your brother in check and an eye on your auntie Kat. Can you do that for me, sweetie?"
Vera nodded. "Yes Mama," she said and kissed her cheek.
"What about him?" Evan asked, looking at his uncle.
"He stays here," Bonnie answered. "This is between your father, your uncle and myself."
Damon smirked. "Trouble in paradise, BonBon?"
Bonnie turned towards him. "Want another arm broken?"
Damon growled and moved towards him when Elena stopped him. "Outside," she said with finality. "We're not apart of this."
"Fine," he hissed at her and pulled away. He stormed out the room, Caroline and the others behind them. Evan and Vera followed behind Kat, though they didn't hesitate to look back at their parents one last time before the door shut.
"Thank you," Vergil directed at Bonnie as he sat up, holding his bleeding wound. He would heal, but it would take some time. He just hoped within the lenght of time his sister in law and brother would have their squabble he could make a clean getaway.
"I didn't do it for you." Bonnie said while her gaze was still on Dante's.
"I see," Vergil muttered. "Well I'll get out of your way. I'm sure you two will need some time to talk."
"Don't." Bonnie said. Vergil stilled, being blocked by some invisible force field. "I said this between the three of us."
"It seems more like it's between you two, since you've used your magic on Dante." Vergil countered.
"You lied to him," Bonnie snarled.
"You used your magic."
"Enough," Dante said. "Don't talk about me like I'm not here."
Bonnie sighed and looked at him. "I had to."
"I didn't need you to," Dante said.
"You were going in for the kill, Dante. What did you want me to do, watch our only lead on your family die?"
"Yes." Dante snapped, his temper flaring. "He lied to me, Bonnie. He lied to us!"
"We all lie, Dante."
"We keep secrets," Dante said and pointed between the two of them. "We don't lie to each other."
"I know that." Bonnie said with a sigh. "But Vergil is family."
"He's not family of mine."
"Tough luck, demon killer. He's your brother by blood and blood is thicker than water." Bonnie sai,d, poking his chest. "Now whatever twenty-three years of brotherly angst you have, you'd better work it out."
"Bon I'm not sitting down with him."
"Dante, he's your brother, your twin - basically a mirror reflection of you." Bonnie paused and cupped his cheeks. "I know you're mad, I know you're hurt but please just talk it out."
Vergil watched them, curious at how they could go from being angry with each other to understanding. In a way, it was like watching how his mother and father would argue. His mother always gained the upper-hand and Sparda was simply puddy in hers. He supposed that's what love did to demons. It made them soft.
In a way he was glad he had cut off those emotions.
Never having to have to worry about a loved one. He could admit, he still felt the aching reminders. His angel genes made it impossible for him to not be fully demon. The reminder of feelings, of humanity, of a purpose to be good - it still clung to his black heart.
Kat's painful jabs had been an example.
He had loved her, so much it was true. He hasn't lied when he said she was valuable, she was useful. But he knew that she was so much more.
"Vergil." The voice of his brother pulled him from his thoughts and Vergil turned his eyes on his brother. How far they had come. From strangers, to brothers, to enemies to somewhat on the path of brotherhood again. Dante had changed, his resembled their father more. But still he had their mother's eyes and the kindness of her heart. Dante stood with his wife by his side. The wife who would stand by him, his queen and mother to his children. They were all that Vergil was not.
He was King in name but Dante held the real crown. Heirs of their father's throne, a Bennett witch by his side for all eternity and all Vergil had was his bitterness and hate.
Dante was speaking but he heard nothing.
He would hear nothing.
"I will not be apart of whatever it is you wish for." Vergil gritted out. "Our truce is done."
He moved to open a portal and leave but he couldn't move. He was turned around and facing his brother once more. Bonnie's hand was out, the black veins wrapped around her arm like vines.
"So much for you not using your magic," he mused.
"Silas will come soon," Bonnie hummed and then turned to her husband. "We need to find your father and mother before then."
"How long do we have?" Dante asked.
Bonnie concentrated before she answered. "Twelve hours, he's weak and in a slumber. But not for long."
Dante nodded. "We're going to find our father, you stay here and - "
"No." Bonnie said.
"Bonnie, you can't come into Limbo."
"I can sure as hell try," Bonnie said determined. "You're not going in there alone."
"I'll have Vergil."
Bonnie gave him a look. "We see how well that turned out, didn't we?" she asked. She held up her finger so he wouldn't speak again. "No arguing on this. You're my husband, the father of our children. I'm going with you. Grams will protect the house while we're gone."
Dante sighed. "Stubborn woman."
"I'm married to a stubborn man."
Dante nodded and went outside to call the others back in. When they came back in, Vera and Evan rushed to their parents, hugging them. Vergil watched the display. Vera's eyes found him and he could have sworn she was seeing right into his soul.
Vergil flinched, it was all he could do.
"He's still alive?" Evan asked, his eyes darting to his uncle before looking at his parents. His eyes started to glow and Bonnie reached out, grabbing her son's shoulder.
"He's going to help me and your father." Bonnie said.
"Mom he just admitted to knowing where Grandpa and Grandma are, as well as lied about it, and you want to help him?" Evan asked, eyebrow raised and his eyes filled with questions.
"Kat," Dante called to the witch. "Can you open up a portal to Limbo big enough for three?"
Kat's eyes widened. "Bonnie can't enter Limbo. She could be torn apart."
"I can handle it," Bonnie smiled weakly.
Kat bit her lip. "I'll do it. But I'll be guiding you for as long as I can."
Dante smiled. "Thank you."
Kat shook her head. "Don't thank me yet. Let's get this over with."
So this will be the last chapter of anything I update for a bit. Not a long hiatus, maybe a month or two. Classes just started back up and I want to focus on those for now. So fanfiction will be going on hold. Need to pass my classes this semester so wish me luck you guys! (For all you high school juniors and seniors, when you go into college, take light classes. Don't pull what I did.)
Love you all, enjoy the rest of the month and the months to come and see you when I see you,
Izzie.
