A/N:
Dec 7 2020 it will have been 6 years since the upload of the very first chapter.
I have made a lot of empty promises regarding rewriting and continuing this story but here we are.
Chapter one rewritten.
This one is the start to an entire rewritten story.
More detailed, less grammar mistakes (as I am not 16 anymore :) ) and overal more words. This chapter alone has an added 1000 words from the old version.
I hope you enjoy.
Jane Clementine Rizzoli.
28 Years old, or young depending on how optimistic you are.
Former Homicide Detective? Check.
Specified referral to Secret Services? Check.
The training in the Secret Service was tough, but the job was even tougher. Shortly after training the agent got assigned to nobody less then Edmond Isles, the recently elected President of The United States of America.
Rarely did the security personnel of the Presidential family change as they preferred people in charge that had the required experience to ensure the safety of said family. However this year was different, with the previous President out of the house so did their section of the security detail and that is where Jane had to jump in. She moved from Boston to Washington D.C. for the job, got herself an apartment not too far from the White House so there was around-the-clock availability when necessary.
Besides the President and the First Lady, Constance – there was another person in her protection. The presidential family had a daughter that was rarely spoken about, she had resided in Tanzania to help the local residents set up housing and medical facilities and didn't even return after her father became President. Not even Jane had seen the daughter besides the black on white printings on file that described her medical history but rumors were of a beautiful and smart woman, hazel eyes and golden hair. She had always been hopeful to meet the woman some day but until this very day – a year in to service – it had never happened.

It was mid summer and Jane had only recently gotten her doctors approval to get back to work. She was anxious, unusually out of routine after being out of it for barely a week. There had been a shooting accident at one of the recent parades. Still she beat herself up over it, sure she was going to lose her job the moment she stepped foot in to the House again. She had covered everything.
Every remotely elevated surface was covered by her team, roofs and windows all watched at all times – plenty of security in the air and on ground but yet someone slipped by them and managed to fire a shot.
Of course it was all over the news. The big parade, the masses of people – the Presidential family and the Vice President in danger? It was an absolute fuck-fest and she was in the middle of it being the one that caught a bullet. She found it absolute bullshit, this was her job and it seemed like people forgot about that sometimes. You sign up to give your life for the ones you get paid to protect, you train to protect no matter the cost and that is exactly what she did – she protected no matter the cost.
Jane found herself in her parking space at the House, her hands trembling on her steering wheel. It felt like her very first day over again. She sat back in her car seat and sighed deeply, regretting her actions instantly as she winced at the stinging of the wound. Running long fingers through dark raven hair she closed her eyes, thoughts shooting back to the events that unfolded just days before.
''A85 spotted a scope glint in one of the South East Buildings. Get the President to safety.''
There was no delay between the words sounding through her earpiece and her arm reaching out to the Presidents forearm, her eyes scanning towards the South East end of the location.
''I want everyone in that area on that sniper.'' Jane said, turning her attention to Edmond who was now looking at her – worry behind his eyes.
''We need to get you out of here, Sir. All of you.'' Jane said, opening the car door and dragging him towards it and ushering him to get in – Constance hot on his heels.
The agents earpiece gave static as she looked around once more, her eyes falling on the glint one of her men had mentioned earlier.
Brown eyes widened. ''Get down!'' She yelled, the security detail around her immediately raising their guns as she leaped to push Edmond and Constance in to the armored car.
A gunshot.
Screams.
Another gunshot.
''Shooter down! Evacuate!''
The words were distant in her ears, a stinging pain taking over her body as she dropped to the ground just outside the car – her hand still clinging to the handle of the door she had just opened.
The agent tried to get up, to close the door and get the family out of there – she really did but there was no way in hell she was getting up anymore. Everything felt distant, blurry. The people screaming and running away from the scene, the security detail running up to the car.
They were yelling at her, repeating her name. Others were yelling at each other for a status on the shooter or to get in the car and drive the family back to the House.
Everything went black the moment she let go of the door, the faint sound of the doors closing and the car leaving the last thing she heard before waking up in a hospital bed.
Jane shook her head, opening her eyes to drag herself out of the memory. She had messed up and only barely made it back to work as fast as she did. No news from the family had come her way yet, nobody reached out to her about anything as they were most likely sitting on whoever that shooter was, trying to find out where the flaw in that days security was.
With pain the agent got out of her vehicle, it had been four days since the assault. Four. Her body was still aching with every step or breath she took, the brunette knowing very well she was far from ready for the field – but she could be in the office and check on the family.
Pushing herself through the doors she checked in, not caring much for conversation as she headed towards the oval office where Edmond most likely would be. Stepping down the corridors in long strides she arrived at the big doors and firmly knocked on them.
A small but relieved smile made it up the brunettes face as she heard the all too familiar voice from the other side of the door.
"Come in.''
Jane opened the door and stepping inside, closing the door behind her. ''Good morning Sir.'' She said while giving him a curt nod as his eyes met hers, the mans soft gaze turning to a worried one. His brown frowned as he stood. ''Rizzoli? You are back early. Are you okay?''
The agent nodded and swallowed heavily at his question, everything was still hurting but she was ready to return.
''Yes, Sir. I successfully completed my tasks and am ready to go back to work. However no heavy field work for the next two weeks, safety precautions.'' She said, clasping her hands together behind her back – her face barely changing while the action strained her wound, causing it to sting through her entire body once again.
''You are ready for duty again?'' Edmond asked, surprise in his voice. The man moved down to open a drawing and took out a set of papers. Jane eyed him carefully, nodding once again
''Yes, Sir. I have to make sure everything continues to run smoothly.''
The President nodded, ''Good, come take a look at these then. Please.'' he said as he held out the papers to his bodyguard.
Jane stepped closer, her brow furrowing as she took the papers from Edmond. She scanned the page, her eyes falling on a picture secured to the top of it with a paperclip. Brown eyes softened at the sight of a very cheerful woman with golden blonde hair, she must have been a few years younger than the agent on the picture.
''Who is this?'' The brunette asked intrigued, barely looking up from the paper as she scanned over the rest of the file. Her eyes falling on the womans name as The President spoke up.
''That, is my daughter. Maura Isles.'' He said.
Edmond might be the President, but he held a true fathers pride by the mentioning of his daughter. It made Jane give a small smile, looking at the picture once more before looking up at her superior. She was surprised to say the least that he showed her the complete file,
''No disrespect Sir, but why are you showing me this? She is barely spoken about, the First Lady nor the media ever talk about her.'' she asked quietly, putting the file down on the desk.
''That is correct. She is residing in Tanzania. She works there, changed her last name as soon as it became known I was planning on running for President. Maura always wanted to go her own way and so we collectively decided to keep her out of the fame and danger the title of 'First Daughter' carries with it.'' He said.
''However, she is returning tonight and she needs a ride from the airport. Nobody knows who she is, nor that she is arriving. Sadly enough I am not allowed to go get her. I hoped you could do so. It will eliminate a big part of her contact with strangers and I know she will be safe with you.'' Edmond added.
The brunette nodded, confusion in the back of her head. She had never heard of this person until now and she was far from ready to go back in to the field tonight. ''Sir, again – no disrespect but I have been assigned to protect you and your wife and to be quite frank I am currently far from able to deliver proper protection in the field, I'm not even sure how -''
Edmond raised his hand, shushing his bodyguard instantly halfway through her ramble.
''I am not asking you to do this as a part of your job. I am asking you to do this as a colleague. No extra security, no heavily armored cars, no media outlets, no cabs having to drive her to the White House. She wants to live a normal life, away from the Office. Having you pick her up is the closest thing I can offer her instead of me.'' He said, pinching his lips together.
Seeing Edmond like this hit Jane. Of course they had laughed and bantered in the past. The brunette had been working with him and Constance for a bit over a year now and they knew each other in and out, it helped keep things transparent and made sure they could trust each other blindly which was key in their work relationship. However this was the first time Edmond had directly showed her vulnerability and had asked her to do something for him outside of work hours and off the books – a personal favor.
It took Jane off guard, something which didn't happen often and it was noticeable in the way her entire demeanor changed. The agents shoulders relaxed and dark eyes softening, her voice soft as she spoke.
''Yeah, of course. Do you have her flight details?''
The President gave the agent a smile of appreciation and nodded, handing her another set of papers. Jane took them, wanting to thank the man as the creak of the office doors was heard. Both their heads shot towards the source of the sound and The First Ladies head popped around the corner of the door.
''Sorry, am I interrupting?'' she asked.
At the queue of her husband shaking his head Constance stepped inside and closed the door behind her. Her eyes lit up at the sight of Jane. ''You're back already!'' she said surprised, walking over to the agent.
Jane nodded and gave the woman a small smile, ''Yes I am, I passed my medical tests as soon as I could. I wouldn't want to miss a day here.'' her usually raspy voice followed by a genuine chuckle.
''I will be in the office for most of the day, I am not ready for field duty just yet. I just got assigned to pick up your daughter from her flight, so I might make a late night visit as well.'' the agent added.
''Oh!..'' Constance said, her voice sounding almost disappointed. Edmond noticed and chipped in.
''I am sorry, honey.'' he apologized. ''Maura wants to stay under the radar, we can't go without full security detail especially this short after an assault. Jane is the closest thing we can send.'' He said as he walked up to his wife and pressed a kiss to her temple.
''So we send her out there to get shot again? Did you even thank her for saving us?'' The First Lady asked as she shrugged away from her husband, clearly upset that she couldn't personally pick up her daughter – but it was something that came with the job.
It was an understatement to say that the brunette felt uncomfortable having to witness this conversation and against all her training rudely interrupted the Presidential families upcoming argument.
''Look,'' Jane said barely loud enough to interrupt the couple in front of her. Their heads turned to her as she spoke and she suddenly realized she stepped on a line she wasn't allowed to cross by the books – but yet she did.
"Look,'' She started over, scratching the back of her neck uncomfortably.
''When I got asked to do this job I signed up to protect your family regardless of what it might cost, that includes my life in the worst case scenario. We are supposed to protect you, there is nothing to thank me for. It is also clear that I am not ready for the field yet. I returned this soon to look through the security plans of the parade to see if I can figure out where the flaw in the system was. I wasn't asked to pick up your daughter as her bodyguard, it is outside of my contract and my working hours. We are both aware of it, Mr. President just wants to ensure your daughter gets in and out unseen so he asked me for a favor. If wanted you can join me tonight, but this needs to be cleared by a separate team that I currently have no control over. There is no negotiating about the pickup. It will be in an armed civilian car, no backup. If they approve I will come to the House before heading for the airport. Have them page me with the results if they allow it and I'll ensure pickup.'' The agent says, awkwardly pinching her lips together after she was done.
Edmond sighed deeply. ''Can you give us a moment Rizzoli?'' he asked, the annoyance in his voice telling Jane that she most likely had said something that would get him in trouble with his wife.
'Yes, Sir. Of course.'' the brunette said, flashing Constance an apologetic smile and mouthing the words 'Good Luck' to her before hurrying her way out of the Oval Office.
After talking to some of the guards on current duty the agent made her way to her office, she was going to need a hell of a lot of coffee to get through this day.
