Chapter 41- Snippets of worry, tension and care

"Hey, don't look so down, they're fine. You heard the Healers" Roxanne whispered to Scorpius though unsure why she was whispering as they were the only two in the carriage.

Lorcan was in a prefect meeting, Liv was getting something from Elliott, and Ly, had noticed that Scor needed a moment or two without knowing why and made up some quick excuse to also leave.
"I know, I just hate to be so far away. I feel like I should be at home with them, not going back to Hogwarts"

"I know, but you would have only worried your mum more by being worried. And at least at school you'll have things to distract you from worrying"

He shrugged, "I suppose"

"Hey, come on, cheer up. Everyone is fine. Your dad said he would send word when your mum went back in, and you know that if you need to be there, McGonagall will probably let you go anyway. Besides, I need some moral support to get through all the Quidditch Ly is bound to have us playing"

"You never need any support to play Quidditch" he scoffed.

"Yeah well, you've never seen me play without you" she told him, with a loving nudge.

He smiled a little and rolled his eyes at her.

"Roxanne you're a seeker, you don't really play with me"

"I'd love to see you say that in front of Ly." She laughed, knowing their friend would not take kindly to the suggestion that seekers were less reliant on the rest of the team than any other player.

"Anyway" she continued before he could argue, "I play much better knowing there's a damn good chaser out there to distract from me"

"So basically, you like that sometimes I'm a target instead of you?"

"Pretty much yeah" she agreed, managing a small smile from him.

"That's better" she said, giving him another nudge.

"Oi" he replied, nudging her back.

She laughed lightly, and poked him again before standing up next to him to reach the overhead shelves. He poked her again, now in her sides, exactly where he knew she was ticklish. She squirmed away with a small shriek.

"No fair, I just wanted to check on Iri"

Scor stood and also looked at the shelf, the small dragon was still fast asleep in his travel basket.

"Iri is fine" he told her.

"Good. You're lucky, if he'd have been woken because of you I would have–"

A knock on the glass behind her stopped her short, she saw Scor's amused face fall before she turned, knowing already who it was.

"Hey you" her boyfriend greeted, a confident smile on his face.

"Hey" she replied, still not having moved toward him for some reason.

He raised a brow. "Everything okay?"

"Of course" she snapped back into the moment and greeted him with a hug. He squeezed her tightly and stepped back into the passageway of the train with her still in his arms. She heard the door slide shut behind her.

"Missed you" he muttered into her hair, making her smile.

"Missed you too" she half lied. Only half, because while she had missed him, she'd also been so busy that she hadn't really felt sad about not physically being with him. Writing letters back and forth had been lovely but if she was honest she would have found it hard to find time to be with him had he been home. So she'd been kind of okay with the separation. On a practical note of course.

He pulled back and looked at her face for a few seconds, "Somehow, you're even more gorgeous than I remember" he told her softly, and part of her melted a little.

She smiled back at him before leaning in to his kiss, trying to ignore the part of her mind that was aware of the boy behind the glass, and for some reason bothered that he might be watching. ~

"Someone looks flustered" Olivia noted on Rox's arrival back into their compartment.

"No idea what you're talking about" she said innocently, biting her lip a little at her friend's accusing gaze.

"Oh of course not, you just walked Logan back to his compartment to say hi to his mates right?"

"Right"

"And didn't stop at all on the way"

"Nope"

"Hm, funny because your collar is a little askew"

Roxanne blinked, as if not having any idea about why that would be so, "Hm, that is funny."

"You know what else is funny? I'm pretty sure I walked back past a couple that looked just like the two of you in an empty compartment"

There was a guilty pause and Roxanne couldn't hold her straight face she just sniggered, "Liv, fuck off" .

"Yes ma'am" Olivia replied through her laughter, having reached her goal of making Roxanne very pink-tinged.

Ly, Lorcan and their two guests to the carriage Lucy and Hugo were all laughing along with her, but she noticed that Scorpius seemed to be back to his earlier state of no-emotion staring. This only made Liv feel guilty and wonder quite how much Roxanne's relationship would affect him this term. His mood seemed off already. Liv worried that if teasing her friend in the same vicinity as him could make him moody that quickly, what might happen if he had to witness Roxanne and Logan first hand. ~

Scorpius Malfoy knew that he needed to toughen the hell up and not be outwardly bothered by the stupidest of things, but the harsh reality that Easter was over was only just hitting him.

He and Roxanne had spent a lot of time together this holiday, probably more than anyone in the compartment knew, and it was harder than he thought to get over that.

He'd not wanted to share the news of his mother with everyone yet because he didn't want people to ask him constantly how he was doing or what the situation was, when he didn't really know himself. He also didn't want any pity. The famous Malfoy pride unfortunately just as prevalent in him as it was in his father. Most of all, he wanted no pity.

So of course, Roxanne being Roxanne hadn't told anyone else other than her immediate family about the visits she'd been making to him- or as a result, the time she'd been spending with him.

His mother had been in St Mungo's under observation for a week straight. She'd finally been deemed stable enough to be allowed home under strict bed rest on the day before he had to come back to Hogwarts. He'd barely seen her, she was so exhausted most of the time and the advice had been not to disturb her, but he couldn't bring himself to ever be too far for too long either.

That was where Roxanne had come in. She'd made time to see him every day at the hospital to keep him company and had even (at least he suspected she had) been scheming with Natalia to organise meals at home with her and her family when he wasn't eating with Nat because she had work. He'd eaten with the Weasleys almost every other night, and not once had he felt unwelcome or awkward in their presence.

But seeing her with Logan, and hearing Liv tease her about Logan- all of that reminded him she was still with Logan. And once they were back at school, Scor wouldn't be spending anywhere near as much time with Roxanne. Especially not if Logan had anything to do with it. He only hoped that the change of scenery meant he would do better, and that some good news about his mum would come quickly, because he was convinced it was Roxanne alone that calmed him down enough to sleep at night~

He read the letter in his hands and watched as the small piece of paper floated to the floor. He felt numb as his heart shattered and world caved in. Darkness seeped into his already blurred vision and everything went black.

He woke up shouting. Covered in sweat. Tears in his eyes and on his pillow. He breathed heavily, trying to calm himself down.

"Just a nightmare" he told himself over and over. Glad he'd had the forethought to silence around his curtains.

It was 3am now but he didn't want to go back to sleep, too afraid of what new horrific future the night might bring him. Tonight's special, twisted offering had been a letter from his father, telling him his mother and one of the babies had died. That the surviving child looked exactly like him and that he didn't want it. The dream-letter had been scrawled in blood.

He pulled back a heavy curtain and was almost grateful to the rush of cool air that met his clammy skin. It woke him fully, and pulled him further from his terrible dream. He picked up his wand and left the room, not really knowing where he was walking.

He didn't travel far because minutes later he found himself up on the top of the astronomy tower, bare chested and numb. He barely even noticed when the door opened soon after and someone else joined him. ~

Roxanne checked the map under the light of her wand one last time before pulling the door to the tower top open. It was cold out, but she didn't hesitate.

She took Iri off of her shoulder and whispered that he could go for a fly, the little dragon almost purred in thanks and disappeared into the cloudy night.

She looked toward him, noticing his bare chest, pale against the darkened sky.

"It's freezing" she almost accused, conjuring a blanket over his broad shoulders.

"Thanks" was all he responded with.

"Why are you up?" she asked softly, standing close to him but not quite touching him.

"No reason." He held back, "You?"

"Iri wanted out and woke me up so I figured I'd get a library book until he came back but when I checked the map, I saw you."

"You should have just let Iri out the window and gotten a book, Rox"

"I thought you might want to talk"

"I don't, not tonight"

"Scor-"

"Rox, just go back to bed." He interrupted, harsher than she was used to hearing him, he stepped away so that there was more than an arm's length of distance between them but she wanted nothing more than to close it and hug him.

"Okay, well just don't freeze" she told him, whispering a heating charm at the blanket he now held loosely around himself. It was all she could manage when he was looking at her like that, like he didn't want her near him at all.

She moved to leave but paused with her hand on the door, "Hey, Scor"

"Yeah?" he replied, expressionless.

"I'm here if you need me okay?"

"Mm" she heard him vaguely reply. He sounded disbelieving and she wondered what it was that now had him doubt that? How could he not know she'd always be there for him? ~

"Iri hasn't come back in" Roxanne told Olivia, worriedly.

"He'd only been out for a few hours, Rox. You said he woke you at 3"

"Well yeah, but he usually knows he has to be back not too long after sunrise, I don't like leaving him out in the day"

"Just leave the window open and come back to check on him at lunch?"

"Yeah, okay"

Liv picked up her friend's bag for her and thrust it into her arms as she pushed her out of the doorway ahead of her. She didn't have to rush herself but Rox would be late if she didn't get a move on.~

Roxanne ate in a rush, late because of all the time she'd spent waiting for Iri; she practically shovelled her food down, and was glad there weren't many other people around to see her eat so improperly. Not that anyone would bat an eye, Weasleys always had a thing for poor table manners. She stood, said bye to Olivia who had a free period and jogged to the doors where Logan was waiting for her.

Potions was slower than usual for them. Roxanne could tell Logan hadn't done the reading she had over the holidays and so she had to slow down a bit for him to understand what was going on. Something about it frustrated her more than it should have. She blamed it on the anxiety of not knowing where Iridis was, but all her mind could do was keep flashing back to Scorpius on that tower. Him pushing her away and the look on his face when he did.

And it bothered her.

She knew that no one else at school, bar Fred, knew what was going on with him at home, and she knew he trusted her with it; but him pushing her away almost made her feel like he didn't trust her that much after all.

She'd come to feel special to him, honoured – if that was the right word- to have been the one he confided in but now she questioned if she was any different to anyone else. Did he really trust her with how he was feeling? Or had she just convinced herself that he did?

Was it all just coincidence? Would she be just as clueless as everyone else right now if she hadn't been at lunch with Vic at that time on that day? ~

Roxanne had been off all morning. First, she'd been late. Now, she was just staring at nothing. Usually, if Logan hadn't done the reading (as he very occasionally didn't), Roxanne would just shrug, smile, get out some other work, do that and then chip in when he'd caught up to her. She wasn't taking advantage of the time she had, and that was weird. She also looked a little like she hadn't slept, and every so often she'd blink in quick succession, as if whatever she was thinking about was making her nearly cry. He wondered if something had happened over Easter. He worried that she wasn't okay.

He also wasn't sure how much she'd share with him, or if she would even share anything without him asking.

Roxane had so many family members that she never ran out of people in her life to talk about, but somehow that made him feel like he barely knew her. She'd mentioned everyone, but never anyone in much detail. He only had a vague sense of her relationships with them all, and sometimes wondered if she just didn't trust him yet. He didn't know if she was holding things back from him intentionally. Logan still felt like he didn't know her at times, and though it had almost been 6 months, occasionally it was almost as if they'd only just started talking. He wasn't entirely sure whose fault that was either. ~

That week was probably the longest week of Scorpius' life. He couldn't sleep, and each night found himself up on the tower, staring at the stars he'd been named for. Wondering if some other constellation would give its name to a new Malfoy, or if-

Well, the 'ifs' were innumerable.

They were what kept him up at night.

Iridis joined him.

Roxanne would let him out in the evening and he'd come up and sit on the tower with Scorpius, sometimes he even came and slept on his shoulders. He wasn't sure why the little dragon came back each night when he could equally be curled up inside with a much warmer person, both inside and out. Nevertheless, he was grateful for the company. He almost hoped that Roxanne would come up again too, even if only in search of the parva.

Scorpius felt like she would be the only person who could help him, because she was the only one who knew what to ask; but she never came back. And he knew he was the one to blame for that too, he'd sent her away.

Each night he wished for her but he never asked, because while being alone with his worries was hard, admitting it was even harder. ~

It was Saturday night and Roxanne was dressing to go out for a walk around the grounds with Logan, he had insisted they spend more time together, and she had no problems with that. In fact, she'd been spending quite a bit of time with him this past week and it had been lovely. She felt really good about them and their relationship. She'd even sent a probably slightly embarrassing letter to Dom gushing about him. The moment the Weasley owl had flown off with it she knew her words would come back to haunt her in a mocking tone.

Still, she was excited tonight, she pulled her thickest jumper on and slid her feet into her trainers, confused when there was a knock at the door.

"Come in!" she called, not knowing who it would be.

The door swung open and in the light that came through with it, Scorpius was outlined.

"Are you busy?" he asked her.

She paused, she was, "Are you okay?"

"Not really" he replied.

"Then no." What other response would she have? She looked at the map on her bed, deactivated it and then folded it back up.

"But wait for a minute okay?" She took his hand and sat him down on her bed. They still had ages before curfew so no one would be back in their dorm for a while. She squeezed his shoulder before leaving the dorm and their House common room.

Logan was slouched against the wall and grew that self-assured smile when he saw her walking towards him. She greeted him like she usually would, with a soft but loving kiss, but paused when he held his hand out for her to take.

"Logan- I can't come tonight after all I'm sorry" she managed, knowing he wouldn't react well to her reason why.

"You alright? What's wrong?"

She sighed, trying to work out how to navigate this with him, "Look don't say anything to anyone okay, but Scor's got some stuff going on and he just needs to talk. I said I'd be there, and he needs me now, Logan. I can't explain it all but I really have to be there…I'm sorry."

"Convenient." He said sourly. She'd known he'd be like this.

"Don't be like that, he didn't know I was going to be with you this evening"

"Didn't he? He seems to know everything when it comes to you"

Roxanne did a double take, "What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means, sometimes I feel like I don't know you Rox. And it kind of bothers me how much those boys do. And whenever I try to get to know you more, or spend more time with you- something comes up. And it's usually one of them. Malfoy especially" he spat quietly.

"Logan, I've been friends with them for four years. Ly and Lorc have been coming around my house since before I was born. And if there's one thing you really should know about me by now, it's that I love my friends Logan. They've always been there for me and I'll always be there for them. It doesn't mean I don't care about you, or don't want you to know me. It just means that sometimes, I have to shuffle plans around a little."

"And I'm the one that has to be shuffled?"

"Not always." She paused and took a deep breath, "But right now maybe, he really needs me. I thought you'd be more reasonable"

"I just have to be reasonable without knowing why? Just that he needs you?"

"Logan, it's not my secret to tell"

He chuckled, "Of course not, and let me guess? You're the only one he'd told?"

Roxanne looked at him confused, why did that matter?

He continued when she didn't deny it, "I just think that it's funny, is all. Don't you see? It means you're the only one who can possibly help him"

"And what if I am?" she questioned, she understood why Scorpius hadn't told anyone else, but Logan seemed to be implying it was some purposeful move. As if he was being distant from his friends on purpose?

"Then you're still being naïve about how he feels about you, and I'm so nearly done arguing it"

"Logan-"

"Whatever Roxanne, come talk to me when you've finished comforting the guy who so clearly wants you"

"Wait" she called after him, unable to move, torn between the boy who was scared of losing his family and the boy who was angry with her because she couldn't betray the first boy's trust.

She moved where her conscience told her to go. And it led her back to the first boy, to Scorpius, who was where she'd left him. Only now, he was crying. ~

"It's okay, you don't have to hide anything from me" she assured him, she must have noticed him straighten and wipe at his eyes the moment she'd entered.

In truth, he'd thought it was someone else coming in. Hearing her voice though made him relax as much as he could in his current state of mind. He heard her lock the door to the room, saving him any further embarrassment. She came over and he felt the bed dip beside him as she sat, he couldn't see much of her through the tears in his eyes so he just squeezed them shut as she pulled him to her.

It should have been awkward. He was much too tall and too big to be held by someone with a frame like Roxanne's but somehow, stripped of all the bravado and masculinity he usually carried, Roxanne held him in a way that made him feel genuinely secure. He felt no discomfort, no hesitation or regret. He felt like a child again, like he'd taken a massive fall, and here Roxanne was, just like Nat used to be, exactly when he needed her. Comforting him, calming him and caring for him. Tending to his psychological scraped knee.

She was perfect, in this moment he couldn't be gladder that the one person at school who really knew what was going on in his life was her. No one else could make him feel this much better, he was sure of it. No one understood him like she did. She somehow knew exactly what to say and when to say it. She knew to hold him tighter just before each new wave of emotion hit him. And she knew to reassure him it was okay to cry, just as he began to struggle with the thought of her or anyone else seeing him like this. She told him she didn't care, that it was okay to feel and that she wouldn't think any less of him for it. She told him he was brave and strong and that it would all be okay. And while he didn't usually believe any of those things, when she said them they were true. When she said them, there was nothing wrong with being here and being a mess because she was here too, and she didn't mind a bit of mess. ~

There must be something about watching another person become absolutely undone that changes a person, Roxanne thought that night in bed.

Scorpius had long since left her, in a better state, at least back to a level where he could function for a while, and hopefully finally get some sleep. But still, she lay in bed, wide awake and entirely consumed with deep sympathy for him. Worried about him more than she thought was rational, upset at the idea that he wasn't himself and so anxious about how things could pan out for him. The possibility that his life could be turned upside down even more than it already had been at any given moment made her want to cry. She felt so deeply for him but so hopelessly powerless to help, her heart ached.

All she was able to wonder was if she'd made him feel any better; if she'd said and done the right things for him? If she could have done any more?

She lay awake wanting to be back beside him, wanting to continue to tell him it would be okay, not wanting him to be alone or scared. Seeing him like that was even more unnerving than it had been in the hospital, because here at Hogwarts, it had felt to out of place. It was jarring to witness, and heart-breaking to not be able to make it stop. In her last moments before finally succumbing to exhaustion, she listed all the things she would trade for Astoria and her baby to be fine, for Scorpius' happiness.

She fell asleep before she ran out of things to list. ~

"Okay, just listen for a second then" she told him authoritatively. He only raised a bored brow.

"Let's just imagine, for the sake of argument, that one of your friends had something going on in their life that they didn't want anyone else knowing. Let's say, you were the only one they told because you were just there at the right place at the right time. If you hadn't been, you probably wouldn't know. But you were, and you do. And you can't tell anyone else. Not even your other friends, because they don't want anyone else knowing anything yet and it's completely up to them. And then let's say that friend has had a shitty week, and an even shittier day and they've been trying to keep it all in but they just can't anymore. And they have to talk to someone. But you're the only one that knows so of course you're first choice. Do you leave them? Let them feel alone because you have to go on a walk with me?"

"Roxanne it's not- "

"No Logan, just answer me"

"No I guess I don't"

"Exactly-"

"But, I'd tell you why it was so important that I had to go. I'd explain whatever it was"

"Logan, you know that's not true."

"For you maybe, but I trust you Roxanne, I would explain it to you. I know that you'd not tell anyone, but I'd owe you an explanation. Don't you trust me?"

"It's not about me trusting you, Logan. Of course I trust you. But I promised him I wouldn't say anything to anyone until he was ready for people to know. It's someone else that's trusting me"

"And you always keep your promises, huh?"

"Well yeah, I do" she said, annoyed now.

"Then promise me this, promise me there's nothing going on with you and him. And promise me that if you ever get the feeling that he likes you in a more-than-friendly way you'll tell me?"

She sighed, hoping that maybe this could be the last argument they had about Scorpius Malfoy, "Logan, I know you don't think so, but I know Scorpius. We've always been friends, there's nothing that's changed about how he acts around or to me. We're close, yes and I know you don't like that either, but that's from four years of friendship. I'm sorry but that is a fact. He doesn't like me like that. But if it makes you feel better, I promise to tell you if I ever think he does."

Logan sighed he was silent for a while, "You know, I hate arguing with you"

"So do I Logan, especially about this"

"I know, and I'm sorry. I guess I'm just scared he'll come between us"

"He won't. You need to stop letting nothing at all get to you."

"I'll try, but I can't promise"

"Can you promise to try?" she asked him, Vic's warnings echoing in her head.

"I can promise to try" he nodded, pulling her to him.

She'd take that, and hope that if Scor needed her again, it just didn't happen to fall on the same time she was meant to be with Logan. ~

"You don't need to go over in person, Angie" George told his wife as she stood by the Floo, holding a well thought out and put together hamper. Full of the type of comforts only someone who'd been pregnant before would know was needed. Angelina had refrained from putting anything for the baby in, just in case the worst happened, she knew Astoria would notice that too but hoped she could overlook it.

"You know I do, you know it means nothing unless I'm the one to deliver them"

He sighed, "Ron might have a mini heart attack"

"Fuck Ron. Our daughter loves that boy, the least we can do is help support his family when they need it"

He paused.

"You think she loves him?"

Angelina nodded, "I don't think I've ever seen her look so upset as she did around him, knowing he was hurting"

"Why does that mean love? They're just good friends"

"Georgie, it's different."

"Different how?

"It's how I knew I loved you. It hurt me to see you in pain; I couldn't stand to be away from you; I couldn't be happy unless I knew you were; and I'd do anything to try and make you laugh. There wasn't a thing I could think of that I wouldn't trade to see you smile again" She paused, only then noticing the moisture in her eyes, "Haven't you been paying attention? She loves him, but I don't think she knows it yet"

"Fine. Then I'm coming with you. Let me go get my wand"

She smiled, holding it out to him. He laughed, "Of course you knew I would"

"It's a gift, I get to know what you're going to do before you do"

"Hope you knew I'd do this then" he told her, pulling her to him and kissing her softly. ~

"How's it all going then?" Fred asked, nudging his sister who had zoned out.

"Huh, oh it's all fine. I'm good, how are you?"

"Rox, you're not fine. What's up?"

"I'm just tired."

"Roxanne"

"Fine, I'm just a bit worried about Scorpius I guess"

"Why?"

"He was really distracted in practice yesterday, and Ly really laid into him but none of them have worked out what's up yet. And Scor didn't want anyone else to know but Ly gets crazy with games coming up, especially since you're going to be the ones we play in the finals and he knows you've all been training loads. But it can't go on with them not knowing, Ly would cut him some slack otherwise but if he keeps shouting, I'm scared they'll end up arguing. And that's the last thing he needs"

"Would it really be so bad for you to tell Lysander?"

"I've thought about it, but Freddie he really didn't want me to"

"And you don't want him to hate you?"

"Yeah" she admitted, a little ashamed.

"But you know that it would be better for him to have the rest of your friends know?"

"I think it would yeah, but I don't feel like I get to take that choice away from him"

"Then maybe talk to him about telling them? He needs friends around him; you can't take the sole burden either"

"I guess. What if he still insists not to tell anyone?"

He hugged her to his side. "Then you don't and you wait it out, and maybe he has to hate you for a bit if it gets so bad that you need to tell someone else"

"Great"

"It's okay Rox. You seem to have a good friendship. He won't actually hate you"

"But he might not trust me again"

"Don't be silly, you're the most trustworthy person I know"

"That's only because I haven't told dad you're still pining after Helena yet" she said, trying to cheer up their time together, she didn't want to spend it all moping.

"Don't worry, I have a plan to win her back"

"Thought she still liked you? Surely she doesn't need winning?"

"Oh yeah she does, but she needs a little push to admit it to people"

"And herself apparently"

"Shush" he said, putting a huge palm over her face.

"What's this great big plan then?" she asked, wrestling his arm away with a laugh.

"We win the finals, and she gets back with me at the after party"

Roxanne laughed, "Because that's how you got together the first time?"

"Exactly. Nothing's better at admitting feelings at than a good old finals victory party"

"Shame you won't be hosting it"

"Roxanne there's a reason your captain is worried. We are going to beat you in a few weeks"

Roxanne just shook her head, "Agree to disagree?" she asked, pretending to have confidence in her team. But actually worrying that this year might not be their year if things didn't improve soon.

Eventually, the siblings moved away from the tender subject of their Quidditch final and stayed with each other for another two hours, mostly dreaming about the potential family project that could be their new home. If their mum had actually changed her mind about it of course. ~

"Roxanne, look I'm sorry about the other day" he told her quietly, their other friends enthralled in a violent exploding snap game that Ly and Lorc were playing.

"What about it Scor?" she asked.

"Just well, I guess I didn't think. I didn't realise that it would, you know affect anything with you and Logan. I didn't mean-"

"How'd you know about that?"

"Olivia mentioned it, obviously without knowing the complete story"

"Oh, okay. But no, don't be silly Scor. Logan was being an arse, how you are is always important to me and it's so draining that he refuses to accept we're just friends"

"Must be bored of it by now"

"Him or me?"

"Both?" he suggested and she chuckled.

"I think so yeah, but we're all good now. Hopefully, that was the last time he mentions you in an argument of any kind"

"Oh- that's good" he paused, for too long and she noticed.

"Please try to sound happier for me?"

"Oh well, you know me. It's hard to not be the centre of attention" he told her, pretending he had been pretending, laying the false bravado on thick. Thankfully for him it worked. She shook her head at him with a disapproving smile and tuned back into the game.~
