These all feel so short? I'm not used to writing 2k word chapters anymore but after all this is a rewrite, no a brand new story.
I skipped yesterdays upload as some might have noticed, I got caught up in some gaming. So today you get two chapters!
Gotta stay on schedule :') Next chapter will hold the authors note!
The whole ride had been silent. With Korsak angry in the drivers seat, Jane confused as to why Maura knew her old partner and Maura's slight anxiety from the sudden tension, nobody really said a word.
It wasn't long till they arrived at Maura's house, the brunette getting out without saying too much to Vince. She knew her words wouldn't matter to him if he was angry. Maura quietly followed suit and got the luggage out of the car.
''Thank you Vince.'' Maura thanked the man with a small smile through the open window of the passengers seat. The detective gave her a curt nod. ''No problem, doc.'' he said quietly, giving Jane a wave out of politeness before driving off – leaving the women in the driveway of the Beacon Hill home.
''So where do you know him from?'' the agent asked as Maura opened the front door to the house.
''I worked here for a couple of months to help the Medical Examiner. Doctor Pike couldn't figure out the cause of death of a victim, and with my knowledge of decomposition of corpses in different environments I got invited.'' Maura said as she stepped inside and set the luggage in the hallway, Jane following her suit with a surprised look on her face.
''You worked here at the police department?'' the brunette husked, surprised by both the house and the fact Maura worked in the same place she did. She couldn't help but feel the annoyance towards Pike, apparently still as slow as ever – only now she wanted to strangle him for being dumb enough that they had to fly Maura in from Tanzania to help him out.
With Maura being several months in Boston, working at the police department Jane was almost certain that the woman knew her family. When the agent left Boston her mother still worked in the Division One Cafe at the department and Frankie was still a patrol officer, it was impossible for the blonde not to have met her family in her time here.
Maura nodded, ''Yes I did. I really enjoyed working here and I was planning on staying weren't it for the fact that Tanzania called for my assistance and I had to move back there.'' the woman said.
Jane wanted to ask her what Maura actually did in Tanzania but got interrupted by the First Daughter before she could ask.
''We have dinner at a friends place tonight as a little welcome-back celebration. At least – that is what I have been told.'' the blonde smiled, taking off her jacket and hanging it on a peg in the hallway.
The brunette followed her lead and hung up her jacket too. ''Oh, okay.'' she simply responded, agreeing to the dinner – not that she had too much of a choice, after all she was here for Maura and was basically forced in to whatever the woman had planned.
''Do you want me to put the luggage in the bedroom?'' the brunette asked quietly, her eyes meeting with Maura's as she shook her head. ''No. We can do that later. You should sit down, I believe you are in pain.'' the blonde stated.
Jane frowned in confusions for a split second. She had tried to hide the pain as much as possible for the entire trip already and couldn't help but wonder how the blonde kept looking through her facade without a problem.
''I'm not in pain, Maura.'' the agent tried to sound confident in her words to hide the her lies.
Green eyes rolled in slight annoyance,
''You were in pain during the flight, you were in pain in the car and you are in pain now. Hiding it won't improve anything. If you think you need to hide it you are wrong, alright? I know you are used to hiding weaknesses in your line of work Jane, but it hasn't even been a week since you got shot. It is supposed to hurt, you aren't even supposed to be as active as you are at the moment. You should be on bed rest but you aren't – it is impossible for you not to be in pain with whatever you do.''
Jane was a bit done in by the whole happening, speechless for once as she felt the soft touch of Maura's hands on hers – gentle fingers taking a hold of her hands.
''Don't hide from me, I can see right past it.'' the words followed by Maura gently but reassuringly squeezing Jane's hand and giving the agent a small smile before letting go again.
Jane just watched as the other woman turned around and walked away, presumably towards the living room.
''Are you coming?'' Maura's voice from the other room.
Jane nodded to herself and cleared her throat. ''Yeah. Yeah, I'm coming.'' the agent muttered back, finally letting out a deep breath she didn't even realize she was holding in.
When the agent stepped in to the living room her mouth opened in surprise. It took her a few seconds before she closed it again, a definite failed attempt at complimenting Maura on the beautiful interior in a normal way.
The living room was big, to say the least. The kitchen was directly attached to the living room; the entire house was an open space, making everything look spacious.
Maura couldn't help but smile at the amazed look of the agent.
''Most people look surprised when they see the inside of the house for the first time.'' she chuckled amused. Jane's gaze now switched to her, the slightly confused look Maura loved so much back on the agents face.
Jane stammered. ''I mean, how could they not? It looks amazing. The art, the masks, the interior – its fascinating and reflects you personality.'' she said quietly, now being the one to receive a slightly confused look.
''How come?'' Maura asked, curious as to why the agent said it reflected her personality.
''The African tribe masks show your love for Africa, you most likely flew them in from Tanzania. The art shows how refined you are, the books speak for your curiosity. You are always ready to understand and learn. The open space shows your open personality. You like to have a clear overview of everything, not just because you like the control – you like the transparency.'' Jane said, her eyes traveling over the masks and books one more time before looking back at the blonde again. Green eyes looked back at her, they showed something Jane couldn't exactly place. Sadness? Happiness? Pride? The agent couldn't place it.
But it was admiration.
Maura looked at her in admiration, the way the brunette was able to appreciate her house was one thing – but the way she connected it to her personality was another thing. It wasn't in a bad way, or a mocking way. It was in a positive and supportive way, like the agent was proud of her.
The blonde smiled at Jane. ''Would you like a drink, Jane?'' she asked quietly, the agent sweetly smiling back at her and nodding.
''Yeah, I would love to.'' Jane responded, her eyes following the blonde as she headed for the kitchen and took a bottle of wine from the wine cooler under her kitchen counter.
''I let someone bring this in before we arrived.'' Maura said as she took two wine glasses from a cupboard and poured the wine in to them.
The blonde returned to Jane, holding out a glass for her to take. The agent taking it with a kind smile before following Maura's lead by taking a seat on the couch – she used her free hand to rub the sleep out of her eyes before she focused her attention back to the First Daughter.
''I do need to inform you that I am no exactly the wine type.'' she said, raising the glass to take in the scent of the wine. Her face pulled in to a grimace and she slightly shook her head a bit before taking a sip of the drink.
Maura looked at the agent amused, ''It is a Jeff Koon Dom Perignon from 2004. Limited Edition and it is one of the best wines you will ever have for 170 dollars.'' she said, noticing the brunettes eyes widen as the woman almost chocked on the sip of wine she had taken.
Jane made quick work of swallowing the wine and coughed, setting down her glass on the table. ''170 dollars for a bottle of wine?'' she asked shocked, her eyes meeting with dead serious green ones. The blonde nodded in response.
''Yes? It isn't that expensive for a good wine, I had wines from over the three thousand.'' Maura responded quietly as she took a sip of her wine now.
''Absolutely do not get me wrong, I make a pretty good living out of my job – I can live without struggling but you are literally drinking gold here.'' Jane said, still slightly in shock from the price of the wine.
She had always struggled when she was younger, trying to help out her parents as much as possible with the bills. They always lived in the bad neighborhoods, moved from place to place after getting evicted multiple times for failing to pay on time. Money was a precious thing to her and she was glad she could finally keep her head above the water with the money that she earned with her job at the Secret Service.
''I do, Jane. But I have the money. I could have a pity party about life and save it up, hoard all my earnings or enjoy life from it and help the less fortunate. Most of my money ends up going to charities and I pumped thousands in to my projects in Africa. I am not as rich as you expect me to be, I come around from it – but everything I don't need goes to those who do. I worked hard for this life, and with that I mean my name in the medical world, not my name as the First Daughter.'' Maura said, taking another sip of her wine.
Jane could understand that, appreciate it even. She didn't know Maura had a medical degree, although she had figured so after hearing the blonde had to assist Pike. The brunette sat back a bit so she could properly look at Maura.
''I have to admit, you didn't strike me as someone that would know about the decomposition of corpses. It sounds like a close minded stereotype, but from what I have experienced you are too gorgeous to work in a morgue – I expected you to walk in fashion shows.'' Jane chuckled quietly, her eyes never leaving Maura's as she spoke.
Maura could feel a blush creeping up her face at the agents words, her eyes flickering from the woman's eyes to her lips and back.
''You are too gorgeous to be catching bullets for the President.'' she said back, her voice quieter than before. The blonde could see something change in the brown eyes before they tore away from her own.
''Where were we on career day?'' Jane joked, earning a chuckle from Maura.
''I actually was there. However people laughed at me for wanting to become a Medical Examiner – which is exactly why I wanted to become one. It is an underrated job, but it allowed me to stop treating judgmental people and speak for the dead. But it didn't last long, sadly enough.'' Maura said, Jane nodding quietly.
''I mean, I was at home. I refused to leave my room that day, I knew that if people discovered I wanted to become a cop they would laugh at me.'' the agent said, her mouth twitching to the side a bit in discomfort of the memory before turning her gaze back to Maura's – noticing the woman was still looking at her.
''Why would they laugh at you for that?'' Maura asked confused as she set her glass down on the table, Jane adoring the sight of it – the caring nature of the blonde was something she probably never would get used to. It was refreshing and something Jane admired.
''Well, I was chubby in my younger years. My nickname was Roli-Poli-Rizzoli.'' the agent admitted, a bright smile breaking out on her lips at the sound of Maura laughing.
The blonde couldn't believe Jane was chubby in her younger years, she had come far from that according to the now athletic body the agent had.
''You are having a glass of wine with the First Daughter, so I believe it is safe to say you ended up pretty well after all.'' she said, brown eyes still looking at her as the laughter and chuckles died out.
Brown eyes flashed from hazel green eyes to soft lips and back up, Maura silent as she noticed the agent intently looking at her.
The blonde could feel her breath hitch in her throat when Jane hesitantly leaning in to her, making sure Maura had enough time to reject the action if she wanted to – but she didn't.
At the approval of it Jane closed the space between them and pressed her lips against Maura's. A quiet moan left the blondes mouth when she felt the agents lips against hers.
Gentle arms snaked around the agents neck to pull her deeper in to the kiss but Jane pulled away at the feeling of the arms. As she opened her eyes she was met by a pair of soft hazel eyes – filled with kindness, happiness.
Jane wanted to apologize for the kiss but was cut off by Maura eagerly latching their lips together once again.
