Marlene chuckled at something Lily said as their group made their way out of the restaurant. Suddenly the laugh caught in her throat and she stopped in her tracks.

You never looked so good

A few feet in front of them was a group of young men roughly the same age as Marlene and her friends.

As you did last night, underneath the city lights

Lily pulled Marlene out of the path apologizing. Alice and Dorcus quickly followed, looking worried for their friend.

"Marls, I didn't know they were going to be here."

There walking with your friends

But Marlene couldn't take her eyes off of the other group. The Marauders.

Laughing at the moon

James jumped onto Remus' back, causing the taller man to stumble clumsily. Sirius and Peter laughed, the other two joining in.

I swear you looked right through me

Marlene could feel herself breathing faster, unwanted tears welling in her eyes. She could hear her friends trying to console her, but her mind was elsewhere, focused on that night four months ago.

But I'm still living with your goodbye

How could he be here? How could he seem fine? Like nothing ever happened. Like they didn't lose everything.

And you're just going on with your life

"Come on, let's get out of here." mumbled Dorcus, trying to steer her friends away from the street. She was not fast enough because the Marauders noticed them.

"Hey ladies!" James said, working his way across the street, others following behind. Marlene turned quickly towards Lily, panic in her eyes.

"Hi honey." Lily replied to her fiancé, accepting a kiss on the cheek though she did not take her eyes off of her friend. Marlene could see that the redhead was trying to find a way out of this situation.

How can you just walk on by

Marlene took a deep breath and turned towards the others. Her eyes unwillingly sought him out. He was looking at her as well. No emotion on his face.

Without one tear in your eye

Everything seemed to stop. Their friends' voices drifted away and all that was left was the two of them. Sirius and Marlene.

Don't you have the slightest feelings left for me?

Unconsciously, Marlene's hand drifted towards her stomach, resting on it. Sirius' eyes followed her movement.

Maybe that's just your way

Something flashed in his eyes, too quick for Marlene to catch. Her hand fell.

Of dealing with the pain

Flashes of the night four months ago. Pain. Blood. Tears. Something they didn't even know they had, gone in a single moment.

Forgetting everything between our rise and fall

Sirius turned away, laughing at something Peter said. Marlene heard everyone else laughing too and she forces out a chuckle, willing the tears away. Lily kissed James and grabbed a hold of Marlene's arm while Alice took the other. Dorcus bid the Marauders farewell and the ladies headed on their way, continuing on with Lily's hen night.
