Chapter 3: Falling overboard

Buck brought the lady to the firetruck and helped her grab on so she could climb up, then instead of climbing on himself he held on to the side of the engine and moved along it to get to Chris. Chris noticed the people in the water moving towards them, and lifted his finger to point while saying: "Buck, look!". Buck quickly turned his head around and the people were screaming, asking for help and for someone to save them. Buck looked at the woman, who where now on top the truck and moving towards the middle of it; "Will you watch him?" he asked, pointing at Chris. "Yeah" the woman agreed, nodding and moving to sit next to him, and then Buck leaped into the water again, going to rescue more people. He really loved the bravery of his Buck. He looked at the woman smiling friendly, and she put her arm around him leaning her head against his hair, and Chris thought he felt her starting to cry a little so he hugged her back as best he could.

After a few seconds the woman released her grip around him, and moved back a little to get a better look of him; "Well aren't you a brave little man" she smiled at him. Chris gave out a short giggle; "Yeah" he answered, while still smiling at her. His dad always said that he loved how Chris never stopped smiling, and that he was proud of him. He wanted his dad to stay proud of him now, so he kept smiling; Besides he was on a firetruck, and firetrucks were safe. Chris looked out in the water in aww at Buck, who was making sure people got to the firetruck and were able to bring themselves up to safety. "Is he your father?" the woman asked, and Chris looked back at her; "He's my Buck" Chris answered proudly. The woman smiled, not sure what that meant, but not needing to know either. There were starting to assemble a rather large crowd on the firetruck, and Chris was starting to feel a little cold from his close being all wet. The woman put her arm around him again, starting to rub his arms and back, and it helped a little on the cold.

There were almost 8, maybe even 10, people on the truck when Buck came back up to him. The woman smiled at Buck. "It's a very brave kid you got yourself there" she said nodding to Chris, while moving away to make room for Buck. "Yeah. He never ceases to amaze me" Buck smiled back, looking at Chris with a proud look: "he is amazing". Then Buck sat back down next to him and looked to the woman: "I hope he wasn't causing too much trouble?". The woman smiled: "Not at all, he was a ray of sunshine in all of this" she gestured out over the mess caused by the tsunami. "Yeah, he never stops smiling" Buck said, once again looking proudly at Chris.

They started playing 'I spy' to get the time to pass, it was Buck's turn to spy: "I spy with my little eye something that… moves people around" he said. Chris looked out over the water for a little while, before spotting what Buck must mean. "A scooter" Chris answered. Buck laughed while answering: "Yeah! Nice one". Buck laughed a little more before saying: "Okay genius. Your turn". Chris wanted to continue playing with Buck, but he also wanted to be the one yelling the things out; "But yelling stuff out is the fun part!" he exclaimed when Buck teasingly corrected him for doing just that with a shopping cart. They both laughed a little. Chris still hadn't told Buck about the tension he felt whenever he breathed, he didn't wanna complain, and for now it wasn't too bad, so he laughed with Buck. Then Buck became really serious, talking to him about getting some bad news at work and not wanting to get out of bed for a whole week, and that Chris was amazing for always smiling and laughing, for never giving up. Buck talked about how Chris kept on swimming. "Like Dory?" Chris asked, a little unsure of what they were talking about. "Yeah, like Dory" Buck smiled, and went on about how Chris never complained and always moved forward; "How do you do it?" Buck asked him. Chris smiled and explained: "Well, I complained once but it didn't work". "So what did you do?" Buck asked, genuinely curious. "Just kept on swimming" Chris answered. "Like Dory" Buck stated this time, ending the conversation there. Then they heard some commotion from somewhere in the middle of the truck, and a man was pointing out in the water: "Look. Over there", and a woman saying: "Oh no…". Buck straightened his back, "what?" he asked, looking for what the others had noted. Then Buck relocated, picking Chris up, going back to the game of 'I spy' they had been playing earlier. He sat Chris on the side rail of the truck, Chris back turned to the water, holding his head so he wouldn't turn it. Chris just laughed, glad he got to be the one yelling stuff out again, even though he knew that there was something in the water that Buck didn't want him to see.

More time passed where they continued on talking and playing like that, when Buck suddenly became all serious again; "I don't know what I'm gonna tell your father. I take you out one time and… look what happens". Chris had to take in a breath to talk: "You saved me. And you saved them " he said looking at the people, taking in another breath and forcing himself to smile wide again, even though he was starting to feel a little worse. And Buck stated that it was a team effort, him and Buck, then they high-fived and hugged, and Chris tanked Buck again. Then Buck tightened up, and Chris could see that the water was moving again. A man fell into the water, and the people on the truck braised themselves as the truck was being hit by things from the water. Chris was still sitting on the rail, Buck hugged him tight while instructing people to get down and hang on to the truck as best they could. They heard someone yelling from the water, and Buck loosened his grip on Chris to go check it out. The woman from before came over to Chris and steadied him a little, while Buck and some of the others started pulling more people up on the truck. Suddenly something hit the truck, which made it move, and Christopher fell back into the water, yelling for Buck as he fell…
