If You're Not 100% Certain
Disclaimer: I don't own Gilmore Girls
So it happened again. I started re - watching GG on Netflix and got sucked into the fandom as a result. Of course I swore I wouldn't write for this one (because I already have too many), but we know how well that works...
And being me, I'm most interested in the couple that's been married though out the show. :)
Emily Gilmore didn't understand why her granddaughter, Rory had said "no" to Logan Huntzberger's proposal. She pondered over it for the rest of the day while everyone else hugged and congratulated Rory for graduating from Yale.
He was so perfect for her. He was a Huntzberger and a Yale graduate. And although he'd made some mistakes in the past year, Rory had said he was doing well now, having found a company in Silicon Valley. He'd found he and Rory a house in that area and said there were several newspapers out there just waiting for her application. And Logan certainly made Rory happy; she always smiled whenever someone spoke of her boyfriend.
Ever Emily had seen Logan propose, she'd been mentally preparing for their wedding. Should Rory buy a new wedding dress, or would she like to wear Emily's? Which girls would be her bridesmaids? That young woman who Rory had gone to school with and shared an apartment with last year would be an idea one. Paris, her name was.
And Emily was certain she could get the Rose Room at the Windsor Club for Rory and Logan's wedding; since using it for her own vow renewal two years ago, she knew it was the perfect location for a wedding.
But now, Rory had suddenly ruined Emily's plans and entire life when Rory said "no."
"Maybe we should try to speak to Rory again, Richard," Emily said to her husband as they walked to their car. "She obviously isn't thinking straight when she turned Logan down, and she certainly accepts our advice more than Lorelai ever did." Sometimes Emily thought her daughter, Lorelai, would argue with Emily over the color of the sky, but her granddaughter was always more reasonable.
"Emily, we've talked about this already; Rory has made her decision," Richard said far too calmly. "If you try to speak to her again, she'll become angry with you." He climbed into the driver's seat of the Jaguar.
Emily shook her head, climbing into the car. "I still think if I call her tomorrow, she'll see the error of her ways; I just hope Logan is willing to take her back when she does." Yes, that was the perfect idea. Emily would call her tomorrow morning at 10:30. It would be late enough that Rory would have already had breakfast, but not so late that Emily would interrupt the girl's lunch.
She stared at her husband as he started the engine. The Jaguar was making more noise than he was, and it caused her to become even angrier. "And why are you so calm about this? I thought you liked Logan as much as I did." She said, almost shouting as she folded her arms in front of her.
Richard sighed, once again far too tranquil. "I do like Logan; he's a bright young man, and he was a wonderful boyfriend for Rory. But I also know that no one should be engaged if they aren't 100% certain. It causes too much heartache when you do meet the right person. You know that Emily."
Richard stared directly into her eyes as he said that.
Emily's anger dissolved faster than she would have thought possible. Richard had told her several times over the years how much he wished he'd never proposed to Pennilyn Lott. And Emily would never forget how her heart had shattered when she found out Richard had proposed to someone else.
Richard's voice interrupted her thoughts as they were about halfway home. "If Rory can save herself all that heartache and chaos by saying no to Logan now, then I congratulate her for the decision as well as her graduation. Yes, she and Logan were happy; but that doesn't mean they should get married."
Emily stayed silent, refusing to admit he might be right. But she certainly remembered all the chaos that occurred when Richard broke things off with Pennilyn Lott. Screams from his mother. Whining from Richard about hurting his ex. And worst of all, the horrible gossip that seemed to go on forever.
Still…
"Richard?" Emily said, softly as they pulled into the driveway. "I know this is going to sound foreign coming from me… but thank you for choosing chaos that time." Emily hated things that were out of control, and total chaos would normally cause her to run as far as she could. But that chaotic situation was worth it. After all, If Richard hadn't ended his first engagement, they wouldn't have ever gotten married.
It was dark, but she knew his face looked confused for a moment as he tried to digest Emily's words. Then he chuckled. "I'm glad you think some chaos is worth it." He parked the Jaguar inside the garage.
Emily bristled. He should know better than to say that to her. "I said it was worth it one time, Richard. Nothing about 'some.'"
He chuckled again, proving he knew exactly what he was doing when he provoked her before. They both leaned over for a kiss which lasted several wonderful moments. Then they finally climbed out of the car.
Emily was glad he ended the conversation about Rory as the entered their home, rather than forcing Emily to admit she was wrong. Still, Emily would never wish Rory to deal with all that heartache of being engaged to the wrong man, or all the chaos that would result when she broke things off for who ever was right for her. If she wasn't 100% certain, Rory shouldn't be getting married yet.
Still she couldn't help but sigh in disappointment. Rory and Logan would have had such a beautiful wedding…
