「Act 6: Unbearable Truths

Plans of what our futures hold

Foolish lies of growing old

It seems we're so invincible

The truth is so cold...

Kijimi, 35 ABY

Poe and Zorii had stepped outside, letting Bobu working on getting the information from C-3PO's memory. Kijimi was surrounded by snow and ice. The night grew colder as both of them sat on the roof, scanning the area. It had been a while since both of them managed to talk calmly like that.

"I can't walk out on this war. Not until it's over," he informed her gazing directly at her eyes, he found mesmerizing as ever. "You know the Resistance could use a pilot like you. We're down to almost no one," he added. He almost ended up hitting himself as his recruitment strategy was never the best.

Zorii tilted her head, confused. "Why? We hear about pockets of rebellion all over the galaxy."

Poe sighed as he knew that it was not accurate at all. "Just stories," he admitted dropping his gaze. "We put out a call for aid at the Battle of Crait. Nobody answered. Nobody came. The First Order managed to make everyone so afraid. No one dares to cross paths with Kylo Ren. I'm afraid that everyone has given up."

He and Leia spent months trying to reconnect with old allies and friends. Trying to reestablish and bolster communications and networks. Even require spies to fight against the First Order. Because it had become clear by then that the First Order was getting stronger, it already controlled so many lines of communications and had many jammers operating all over the galaxy.

His thoughts were cut off as she responded, "I don't believe you would accept that. You know, they win by making you think you're alone. Remember? They're more of us than there of them."

Along the dark and cold horizon, the First-order ships started to appear, small at first but growing ever larger as they approached. It won Poe's attention. "What the hell are those?"

"Time for you to leave!" Zorii added, and both climbed down the roof and went back to check on the others.

Zorii dashed inside, Poe at her heels. "The scanners are coming." she briefed the others in. "Babu, did we get it?" added Poe.

Babu worked his magic, and C-3PO spoke the forbidden text. C-3PO's memory was formated. Suddenly they felt the entire work-shop rattling. Poe ran to the nearest window, and Rey followed. They looked outside. A massive Star Destroyer had appeared over the mountains. The blowback shook the city, almost creating chaos.

"Ren's Destroyer," said Poe as he recognized the Star Destroyer.

Rey felt her heart heavy as Ren found them again. She was unsure if there would be any place in the galaxy she could hide from him. Rey turned to flee, but something gasped at her instead. She could feel that Ren was close by. This time she felt his conflicted mind dwelling on torture. She had never felt such strong emotions. She noted what caused that conflict inside him.

"Chewie?" she said and turned facing the others. "He isn't dead. He is on Ren's ship."

They decided to save their friend. All of them hurried through the crooked streets of Kijimi City, keeping low to avoid the enemy. They turned around a corner, and Ochi's freighter was straight ahead. Poe's chest ached as this time; he had to leave Zorii behind again. At least he wouldn't leave without saying goodbye. Zorii pulled a medallion that would secure them access to the ship and handed it to him.

"Take this and help your friend." Zorii offered.

Poe gazed at it, and he already knew that she did unspeakable things to obtain it. "I can't accept this," he said.

"I didn't ask you. I don't care what you think," Zorii voiced up, placing the medallion inside his palm.

Poe thought that Zorii had not changed at all. "Can I kiss you?" he asked her. Honestly, he was never good with words and goodbyes. He had already proven that to her the last time. That lame question was the only thing that he managed to offer as a goodbye.

She pushed him against the chest. "Go!" she said, and Poe noted the amusement in her voice.

He stepped away from Zorii and dashed after the others into the freighter. Rey took the pilot's seat, and Poe slipped into the seat beside her. The ship took off, and Rey slipped Zorii's medallion into the dash slot. They managed to sneak aboard the enemy's ship. They took down a few patrol troopers that approached. Rey, Finn, and Poe headed to rescue Chewie leaving the droids behind.

After Rey used the Force to convince two troopers to let them be, she parted ways with Finn and Poe. She felt that the dagger was on the ship as well. She had a feeling that they would need it. Rey dashed off before either of them could protest. Finn, though tried to run after her telling her that she couldn't just go alone. But as always, Poe pulled him back. They both went to rescue the Wookiee.

Finn and Poe had found Chewie and hoped that Rey had found the dagger. It still seemed that their mission stood a chance. On the other hand, Rey entered a bright and white space with a soaring large ceiling and clean perfection. She noted that it was Kylo Ren's private quarters.

Step by step, she walked deeper inside the room as the dagger drew her. She found the room need and bright, though filled with coldness. As if Ren didn't care about anything or anyone. Expect the melted, warped black mask of Vader himself. She recalled that she had seen the mask before in Ren's memory. It belonged to his grandfather.

She stepped away and towards the dagger and Chewie's belongings. Her fingers wrapped around the handle of the dagger, and she lifted it. It felt like more pieces of her life's puzzles started to connect. She decided to ignore those pieces. She had the feeling if she looked into the memories, she will get hurt more. She'd rather not know.

Silence.

Silence gnawed at her insides. Silence hung in the air like the suspended moment before a falling glass shatters on the ground. That type of silence rose slowly. The world around her fell into it. The ground shifted beneath her feet, and everything went dark. The force connected them again. Not now! Her inner voice begged.

"Where are you?" Ren needed to know. His voice filled the room around her. He stood now alone in front of her, masked, surrounded by darkness. Nothing revealed his earlier weakness that had only lasted for a few moments. The mask was taking care of the rest. Snow dusted his boots and cape. "You're hard to find." he acknowledged. His voice was deep and dark.

Rey didn't want any longer to go through those meetings. "You're hard to get rid of," she spat and turned away. Kylo Ren was no longer worthy of her time. She had more important things to take care of. And escaping from Ren's destroyer with the others was a priority.

He didn't seem annoyed. He seemed more understanding this time. He took his time. "I pushed you in the desert," he started explaining, "because I needed to see it. I needed you to see it." His words were true. "To See... Who you are. I know the rest of your story. Rey!"

She jumped back around, ignoring the way his lips called her name once more. It seemed that speaking about her past and parents was also a topic Rey wanted to avoid. Like Ren would. She ignited her lightsaber and aimed directly against his throat. "You are lying!" she attacked verbally.

"I never lied to you," Ren admitted. And until now, he was always telling her the truth. And some of the truths she didn't want to hear or know. He tried to deceive her sometimes. Because he hoped that he could turn her to the dark side, and offering just the raw truth would not be enough. "Your parents were no one," he said, as he did before. "They chose to be. To keep you safe."

"Don't," she hissed, gritting her teeth. She hated this. That he knew who she was, that he would be the one to tell her. Her fingers clenched around her saber as she glared at him.

"You remember more than you say," he reminded her, "I have seen your memories."

She backed away from him. She didn't want to hear her story. Not now. Not from him. "No!" she uttered, "I don't want this."

Ren absorbed things and then responded more than reacted, dampened situations rather than adding to the flames. He gazed at her calmly. Understanding that what he was asking of her was heavy and difficult to accomplish. "Search your memory," he demanded and waited for her to follow.

"No!" she cried out as her lightsaber swung around. Ren had to bring his own to bear the clash that followed. Blue crushed against Red, and the white room was filled in sparkles.

He didn't back off. "Remember them!" he pressed her again. "See them!"

It didn't take long for the memory to spring alive inside Rey's head. Soon she recalled her mother. Her face, how beautiful she was. And how sad for leaving her behind. Next, she remembered her father. They cared about her. She recalled every detail. She tried to force the memory away as she pushed against Kylo's saber and thrust him back.

He felt her strength growing. "They sold you to protect you!" he went on as they circled each other. This time it seemed Ren would not stop pushing her to remember everything.

He was the only one who provoked her like that. Since the day they met. He pushed her and demanded more of her, like a teacher. But he was not her teacher. Though the lessons he offered her were like no one ever had.

"Stop talking!" she said in a terrifying tone.

His calm was maddening. "I know what happened to them!" he announced. She rushed him and stabbed with a series of blows. Rey was now the one who was in a rage. She didn't want to hear. She didn't want to know. Her blows came faster, the saber more like an extension of herself. Ren countered easily. Like he was sparring, he was not attacking her. He was only holding his defense up.

Rey stroke. He dodged. Again and again. Until her lightsaber sliced through a basket, and the white room was filled with red berries. They spilled out brighter than blood against the white floor.

Their duel went on like they were together and separate. They pushed and entered each other's minds, and spaces like no other force-user ever did. He felt her anger. She didn't care. She just wanted to land a blow, to hurt him. The sabers collided as they fought now closer to Vader's mask.

"Tell me where you are?" Ren demanded again, stronger now, "You don't know the whole story." His gaze dropped against hers. Calm eyes met with fiery ones.

Rey attacked him again and again. He dodged once ... twice and stepped back and allowed some space between them. "It was Palpatine who had your parents taken," he exposed, like a patient teacher, as though they weren't in the fight of their lives. "The Emperor was looking for you. But they wouldn't say where you were."

Rey narrowed her eyes; her rage had taken all over her. She just needed to strike him down and make him stop. She was looking for an opening—anything to get him to stop talking.

"So he gave the order!" came Ren's words with the vision of Ochi killing both her parents. The images were so vivid it broke her heart. He felt it. Her pain. The agonizing feeling of knowing the truth. The feeling was not alien to him. He was through similar pains many times throughout his life. He blocked his thoughts. Now it was not the time about his memories, but hers.

"No!" Rey screamed and launched at Ren. Their blades clashed, hammered with impact. She cast glances at his location for a moment or two. Surrounded by Ice and snow. He was in Kijimi. He had just missed her. She repeated hit after hit, but she couldn't pass his guard. She started swinging blindly, hoping she might get him.

He moved to block her hits. Suddenly, she stroke and the pedestal shattered, and Vader's mask tumbled towards the ground and dropped against Ren's feet.

"So that's where you are." he had finally found her. He stared at the mask for a moment and then back at her. "Do you know why the Emperor wanted you dead?"

"No!" she admitted revealing confusion all over her face. She could not think of any valid answer.

"Wait! I will come and tell you!" Ren said and vanished.

Rey had finally calmed down, understanding what she had done. She let her anger get the best of her again. Ren knew now where she was. Where the others were, she rose her gaze waiting for another attack. But it never came. Ren was gone and heading back to his destroyer.

She had not the time to explain what had happened. She needed to get the others and escape before Ren returned. She grabbed the dagger and Chewie's things. Around the corner, she met with C-3PO, BB-8, and D-O. She saved them from the stormtroopers. She gave C-3PO the belongings as she sensed Ren approaching. "Go find the others," she said. They would be much safer dealing with the mess inside the ship than face Kylo Ren.

The droids did as they were told. They run off and thankfully crossed paths with Finn, Poe, and Chewie. They had been just saved by Hux, who had revealed that he was actually the spy. Without time to spare, they dashed off to enter the Millennium Falcon, as the First Order had commandeered it on the Steadfast. They tried to escape and go pick up Rey.

Rey walked towards the open area advancing on the Tie. The hatch opened, and Kylo Ren emerged. His face was always hidden behind his mask, and his cloak whipped at his heels. His pace slow and strong. The mask hiding any of his weaknesses and 'new illness.'

They started circling each other intensely like two beasts ready to attack. Troopers of the First Order slowly appeared and surrounded them. Ren knew something important. And this time, she wanted to hear it. She didn't know what the outcome would be. Kill him or escape.

Rey remembered Leia's words 'Never be afraid of who you are.' Generals Organa words gave her hope. Gave her strength. It reached Ren's mind and almost caused him to jump back at the memory. Leia was never as understanding with his darkness when he was young, younger than Rey.

"Why did the Emperor come for me? Why did he want to kill a child? Tell me?" she asked, bringing his thoughts back to reality.

He strode towards her. "Because he saw what you would become. You don't have just power. You have his power," he final disclosed, catching her full attention.

Now she knew what he would say. She just felt it. It made her sick to the bone. "You're his granddaughter. You're a Palpatine." He let the truth settle and watched her back away from him.

Rey took a few more steps as far away from his words. Away from him. Though Ren followed her, backing her closer and closer to the void. "My mother was the daughter of Vader. Your father was the son of the Emperor. What Palpatine doesn't know is that" he paused and stare at her for a second before adding, "we are a dyad in the Force, Rey. Two that are one."

She stopped breathing. Just standing at the end of the opening. Her heartbeat paused. She knew he was telling her the truth. The dyad. She thought. She was not sure how Ren figured it. But his words shattered her, took away everything. She stepped away again, almost where the hanger ended, and Kijimi's atmosphere began. It was too high to jump. But right now, it seemed like a good idea.

"We'll Kill him," Ren finally said, "Together. Take the throne." His eyes still pinned against her. He unclicked his mask and took it off. A gesture of vulnerability. Of trust. His face was paler than usual. If she didn't face his strength earlier, she would be bothered by his well-being. It had been some time she had not seen his face. His scar. The scar was slowly fading away, though he would be marked forever. "You know what you need to do. You know." He extended his arm, offering his gloved-hand once more.

Rey looked at him and then at his hand. The memory sprang alive in her mind, recalling the last time he offered his hand to her again. She admitted that together they could do such incredible things what they had. Their connection was something the force and the galaxy had never seen.

But it still felt wrong.

She sensed Finn close by. It was like a tiny ray of sunlight to the darkness that had filled her soul. "I do know!" she finally told him. She turned towards the void. It was the one thing that Rey had, Friends. A family that would be there for her to pull her back from the darkness. It was something that was offered freely to her. Easily. For that, Ren envied her. He could never earn the support of his own blood. His own family. Indeed his father tried to aid him back then. And he killed him because it was too late. Too late for that.

Suddenly, the Falcon rose before her. Poe turned the ship and hit the thrusters blowing back everything and everyone in the hanger. Troopers slid away helplessly. Rey leaned forward to keep her balanced, as did Ren. Finn was calling her from the Falcon. Before she leaped from the edge, she turned and cast a last glance at Ren one last time. She hated him for telling her. But at the same time, she was glad he had. A dyad. She launched herself towards the Falcon. Finn grabbed her and pulled her onto the ramp. They both ran into the ship as Poe flew them away.

Ren didn't show any disappointment. He knew the truth he brought to her was not easy to cope with. It would take time. He needed to provoke her again into a rage. Maybe to repeat the word dyad and watch the truth appear on her face. He knew where she was heading next. They had scanned the dagger; her next stopped would be Kef Bir. They would meet again. And this time, she would turn. Darkness was her destiny.

Kef Bir was actually a moon of Endor, but it seemed like a whole world. There used to be only water. But recent decades brought several climatic changes to the moon. The land was revealed under the angry waves. It was all because of the destruction of the second Death Star. There Rey's group met with a small number of settlers and former troopers from the First Order.

Rey, with the dagger's use, managed to encrypt where the location of the Wayfinder was. She ended up stealing a skimmer and drive it through the rough water finding her way into the ruins of the death Star. She would finally be able to find the Wayfinder.
