「Act 22: The new Spy of the Resistance」
The Analyzer, 36 ABY
Ben felt the cuffs digging painfully into his wrists. There were chains around his ankles, and his left cheek lay firmly in the dust that coated the cold concrete floor. From a high window came a rectangle of light, sending a white beam to illuminate the grime and show the dust swirled in the air. If he could reach it, he might be able to find out where he was. He already knew that he had been taken to an older area in the Analyzer used as a prison. He strained his ears for even the faintest noise, the mechanical voice of a guard, or the passing footsteps of a small squad, even the slight whir of a passing droid, but to all appearances, he was alone. He closed his eyes.
The day before Poe had come to him with a request, Poe wanted him to be a spy for the Resistance, and Ben had agreed readily. He had known, and he had known it well, that if the First Order caught him, he would be as good as dead. But taking the position as a double agent had been the least that he could do to aid the Resistance, and it had the added benefit of a one-way ticket off Jakku. Poe had walked him through the plan and told him which frequencies Ben could use to stream the information from the Analyzer to the Resistance.
Poe had been adept at conceiving the plan and strategically walking Ben step by step through it. Solo had memorized every detail of Poe's ideas and methods to understand better the man he was working with. They had clicked as a team, almost as if they could have been friends or comrades in arms in another life. Even Finn had noted that 'Kylo Ren' could cooperate with Poe, his close friend, perfectly well, and Finn didn't like that at all. Finn could not acknowledge that Kylo Ren was gone, and Ben had turned back to the light. To him, Ben was still Kylo Ren, perhaps he was also a new spy for the Resistance, but still, he was not someone Finn would trust.
After Poe had walked Ben through the plan, he had been given some time to clean up and change into more comfortable clothes on the Falcon. The ship had seeped with memories of his dad, and his childhood and the bombardment had almost brought him to his knees and seeing Chewie had only made things worse.
The only thing that had given Ben hope for a better relationship with the Wookiee was that he hadn't been attacked on sight. Of course, Chewbacca had stayed far away from Ben as possible while dealing with how to face him, his best friend's prodigal son, the same son who had killed his father. Chewbacca, Ben knew, had needed to settle his thoughts and decided how to act around him.
He had sensed Chewie's conflict and hadn't approached him. Ben had ignored him and taken a shower, changing to the clean black clothes that Poe had offered him. Then they had left him in the far-off colony where the Analyzer was supposed to stop for supplies. Ben had managed to sneak on board, and although much of the crew had questioned his return, he had ultimately been accepted.
Poe had advised him to wait until the bridge wasn't busy to copy the data and send it, and Ben had recognized the wisdom in the advice and had agreed. When the time had come, it had taken him only a few minutes to retrieve and send the information.
But, Ben had needed to log into the main database using his old passcode. It had been the only way to access all the information the Resistance had wanted, and he had known that by doing that, there would be no escape for him. He had known that would be the outcome of the mission before he had left Jakku, but he hadn't told Poe.
That was why, before he had pressed the key that would send the last file, he had written a brief farewell to Poe. Ben had known that Poe would understand. Then he had deleted all traces of his computer presence. No one in the First Order would know what information Ben had taken and where he had sent it.
Ajan Kloss, 36 ABY
"Thanks to See-Three-Pio, we've decoded the data that was sent from the Analyzer. We have the coordinates for the remaining remnants of the First Order's fleet." Poe addressed the assembled group of the Resistance's leadership. He waited for a moment, and after taking a deep breath, he continued, "There is also some bad news; it has been confirmed that the Emperor left behind someone to continue his work. We don't know much about this new evil, but it's one of his clones."
A gasp rose from the assembly, and Rey glared at Poe. Then immediately after, the room erupted in conversation. The day before, when Rey had woken up and found that the group of three had gone, leaving her behind, she had been furious with them for not including her. Then, when they had returned, she had learned that they had been recruiting a spy. Now with everyone else, she was informed that the mission had been a success. However, Poe had not elaborated on who the spy was and how they convinced him or her to help the Resistance.
"Is that even true?" Rose cried over the muted noise, "We fought the Final Order. We won!"
Rey thought about the transmission that C-3PO just deciphered for them and the dark visions she had lately. "We might have beaten Palpatine and the Sith, but I believe that the Emperor would have had a contingency plan in place," Rey answered.
"I agree with Rey," Poe shouted, and the group quieted.
"We beat the Final Order far too easily. The Sith always has a plan for their return. Only this time, we aren't going to give him the time to raise another army."
Chewie warbled something that was lost to all as Poe went on, explaining, "His remaining followers are building something in the Unknown Regions. They cooperate with the new darkness that is trying to rise. We don't know where or what exactly we are facing. But we have to fight it."
All around, her chaos erupted, but she blocked it out as she pieced all the information she had together. Rey's eyes widened. Lately, something had been bothering her: darkness she could not explain had been haunting her. Perhaps this was connected to it? She had also felt a familiar door trying to open from time to time. The Dyad, she had tried in vain to reach Ben for almost a year, and now without her urging, it was somehow coming alive again. She knew she was missing something, even with this new information, but she couldn't concentrate here.
"If we want to stop it," Maz said, her gentle voice penetrating the din with quiet authority, "we must find them. We must research the new darkness that rises."
"Is that all?" Rose asked in the quiet that followed the statement.
"There is more!" Finn responded, catching everyone's attention, "We know two things, first how to locate them and what they're after!"
Finn's words brought Rey back to reality. "We know how to find them and what they after?" She echoed questioningly.
Poe pulled a chip from his pocket and inserted it into a holoprojector.
"Look," he pointed at the image description of an odd asymmetric black stone, "This stone is called the Sith's Soulstone. It was an artifact of incredible power created by the first Sith Lord, and it contains all a great evil. This is what the 'clone' is after."
"A stone?" Rose asked confusedly as she gazed steadily at the design.
"I have read about it." Rey ventured, heads turned towards her, and she continued. "Luke mentioned it in his texts. Many of the older Sith lords looked for it. But no one could find it. Luke copied some of the old texts that I couldn't read. But I believe if we manage to decode it, we might find a clue."
The Wookiee roared, reminding Poe to tell the leadership about the second part: how they could find the clone.
"Exegol!" Poe said, feeling all eyes turn on him. "Palpatine has left something behind." He swiped at the hologram, and the image shifted, revealing an image of the Emperors' throne. "It's hidden under his throne, and it contains more information about the clone."
"Then, we need to organize two missions, one to get to Exegol and one to find the Sith's Soulstone!" Maz declared. Rose and Finn nodded in agreement.
"There will be two missions, as Maz said, but one will take care of Exegol and find the stone while the other will engage the remnants of First Order." Poe contradicted seriously, "We cannot miss our chance to take the First Order down."
"The remaining First Order isn't a real threat. We can destroy it easily. Like we have done this year with the three First Order's fleet." Lando explained.
"Exactly!" Poe agreed as he turned to face everyone again. "Our only problem is the Analyzer. It's the last and most powerful resource in the First Order. If we blow it up, the remaining ships will be easy to take down."
"Tell us!" Lando muttered, waiting for Poe to set the plan in motion.
"First, we will organize an attack on the Analyzer. I need a team harassing it from the air, a ground team as well!" Poe answered as he stepped towards the desk and started walking them through the attack.
"Why do we need a ground team?" Rose suddenly asked, "We can bring the ship down without the need to land on it."
"They caught the spy..." Rey realized aloud as she pinned her gaze on Poe. She felt she knew that there was more to the story that Poe wasn't sharing with her, "You want to save him?"
Finn nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard Rey's words. He whirled to face Poe, "Are you serious! You would send a team on a suicide mission to save him?"
Poe sighed and pated Finn's back, "We need him. Besides, we've fought many far more dangerous opponents than a single Destroyer and won. Attacking the Analyzer won't be easy, but it isn't impossible." Then he turned and faced Rey, reiterating, "We need the spy alive."
"We have to destroy these ships," Rey agreed, "we have to stop what we know that is coming."
"No." Finn choked out, "How can we put our people in danger for his sake. He isn't worthy."
Poe, Finn, and Chewie were the only ones who knew who the spy was. Rey and the rest watched with curiosity as the two generals argued for a few long minutes before Finn gave in and grudgingly agreed to rescuing the spy. The Resistance had agreed that taking down the Analyzer was their priority and saving the spy the second. They have split up into two teams: Poe would lead the air team, and Finn would be responsible for the ground team.
「 Upcoming Chapter: Act Twenty-Three」
More than anything, thank you for taking the time to read this!
Feel free to Review and Follow!
thereisaredeemer: Welcome back again. Thank you for your help. After Act 17, I did some minor edits. I know I have to sit down and reread and edit the story. But I have been busy in real, and I'm anxious to finish this Fanfiction, which kept me from doing so. Ben managed to end up in Jakku alive; you already found the answer in the previous chapter. I'll not get into details about how exactly the Force works. Allow me to keep some mystery around the story. But I hope the basics were explained in chapter 21. ^_^ (May-16: I have edited chapters 21, 20, and 19, thankies for your hard work.
aames: Thank you for liking the story. I just posted an update. However, this chapter is one of my worse. I hope the next chapter will again bring the magic back. ^_^
