The camp was all hustle and bustle until early morning the next day, troops were given shifts to stay look at for any further attacks. Whispers were heard, we were moving location, but not before a retaliation was planned. I was brought into the mission following my performance with a rifle on the attack, it seems a general had noticed. The morning of the mission I was huddled into the front of camp with the 107th, Bucky and the General were standing to the front ready to give commands. Once everyone was standing in the square at front of camp the general yelled for our attention.
"Gentleman! Soldiers! Listen up," A hush settled over the camp, "You are heading to the Western Front, the Nazi's have their own facility close by which we intend to storm. It'll take half a day on foot to get there, Sergeant Barnes will lead, we'll have tanks holding up the rear and extra ammunition packs will be given. Now, make your way to Camp entrance, collect your guns and ammunition, packs on, let's go"
I sighed; this was it. I was going into war. I walked in line, when I picked up my gun, I felt a push.
"Hey, Serg is shouting for you," The solider behind me muttered, I looked up,
"Stevens! Up front! Hey, give him an extra ammunition pack, I need him up front, he's one of the best shooters in this camp!"
The man handing at the packs handed me 3 before I pushed my way to the front. Dugan nodded to me in greeting, Bucky gave me a quick smile.
We walked for hours and hours, I stuck close to Bucky and Dugan, our feet ached but we eventually saw multiple buildings in the distance. Bucky held up a hand to stop the marching.
"Dugan take half right, I'll take half left, keep it quiet." Bucky said quietly.
"You got it Buck," He held a hand out to Bucky, they shook "Take care,"
"You too," Bucky glanced to me, "Stevens, and all behind and to my right follow me, we're going to go quiet and then... we'll take the building."
I nodded, readying for rifle and walking forward. It took minutes to get to the outskirts, as we readied ourselves to run in, we heard it;
"Hail Hydra!" Then the buildings lit up, flood lights lighting up the surrounding areas, German soldiers ran at us guns firing wildly.
Bucky and I dived for cover behind a wall, after a breath I loaded, we locked eyes and we went, Guns blazing Bucky and I ran together firing and dodging, making our way to the first building for cover.
There were hundreds of soldiers and the weapons they had were enhanced somehow, the bullets that fired some them looked like beams of blue light. Any solider which took a hit seemed to burst into dust...
The next 20minutes past in a blur of gun fire and screams. Half our regiment were lying injured or piles of dust, the rest of us including Bucky were now prisons of war being led down into the basement of the largest building. The cells held 10 men each and they were round with no seating. We were able to organise and sit ourselves on the cell floors, I saw between Bucky and Dugan, who had raced to us when he saw us being taken away.
Day 1 as a POW (Prisoner of War)
The guards woke us up by hitting us with batons - well they woke up the ones that slept. The men in our cells, Bucky, Dugan, Gabe, Monty, Morita and Jacques sat awake planning, I pitched in as best I could. We were the lucky ones who had a smaller number in our cell, I was lucky to be sitting with the Howling Commando's Bucky first line team.
Ofcourse we weren't fed breakfast or lunch, and at what I guessed was tea time we weren't fed then. The men would piss out the cell bars when needed, I didn't have that luxury, so I held it in and hoped I didn't piss myself in my sleep.
Day 2 as a POW
Again, those who slept were woke up with hits of a baton, I was one of them. I crossed my legs as soon as I did to try to relieve the pressure of needing to piss. Monty seemed to notice,
"Piss out the cells, Mikey, we won't look" he chuckled, even in a situation like this some men were able to keep spirits high.
"I can't" I muttered, my voice breaking, Bucky looked up hearing my voice, "I..." I sighed
"What you doing, Mike?"
"I can't die with this Bucky..." I seethed, "I'm not Mike, I'm Mary and if we going to die here with piss filled pants, I'll do it as me."
"What..." Monty asked,
"I'm Mary. I'm a girl. I can't piss out of the cell; I can't do this!"
All men in the cells stared shocked, Gabe spoke first "Bucky, you knew? Why haven't you-"
"I'm not ratting her out, she's my friend from Brooklyn, she followed me and her brother in the war!"
"No, I meant to say, why didn't you tell us? We could have helped to hide this..."
"Really?" Both Bucky and I blurted out,
"Ofcourse, any friend of Bucky's, eh?" Gabe smiled, the rest of the men nodding,
"I've never seen a girl shoot like that, actually don't think I've ever seen a fella shoot like you, you're good" Jacques added.
I smiled; Bucky took a sigh of relief. "It seems we've got another reason to get out of here, lads. We've got a damsel to save," Monty winked, with a laugh.
"Damsel, sure!" I laughed.
Laughter stopped quick as a bunch of German soldiers rattled the cells and two stopped in front of ours, the taller pointed straight at me.
"Das hier" he instructed [that one]
The cell door was opened and before any of us could react I was pulled up and out of the cell, I was marched away as Bucky yelled after me.
I was stopped outside a door, "Toilette" I frowned, "Wir pollen night in den verhorraum pissen." He laughed to his fellow solider before pushing me in. [We don't want you pissing in the interrogation room]
I quickly used the toilet, I've never felt such relief. I took a moment to breathe before going back out and being grabbed, I was pulled along a corridor to a dark room with a seat in the middle. They pushed me down.
"Bleibe. Amerikanisches Schwein." [Stay. American pig]
I wish I knew what they were saying... or maybe I didn't. I sat for a while before the door opened to reveal a short, stubby man with a balding head and round glasses.
"American?" He asked
"Yes."
"Hm." He paused looking me up and down and circling me
"Age?"
"19"
"Health conditions?"
"No" I frowned, confused by the questions.
He looked up to soldiers in the doorway, "I'd like this one when you finish your questions."
"Why are you speaking English?"
"I'm educated. Now, please live through this, you could be useful," He walked out.
I barely lived through what came next. Questions, beatings, they punched, kicked, broke fingers and twisted my limbs close to breaking, they wanted information on the US Army. I didn't have it... even if I did, they'd never get it. There was a small window in the room, it was dirty but I saw the sky turn from light to dark, so I guessed I'd been here all day. I was on the verge of passing out when the two men interrogating me pulled me up and dragged to another room. The small, stubby man was there, he pointed to a bed and I was dragged over and threw onto in, it was the kind of bed you'd find in a hospital. The men strapped my arms down.
"Evening, Solider" The stubby man smiled, "I am Dr Arnim Zola and I'd like to congratulate you, you will be one of the first US men to be a part of HYDRA's new experimentations..."
"Experiments for what?" I coughed out
"That is confidential." He smiled, prepping a large needle. "Now, please let me know if this hurts, I do enjoy this"
"Please..."
The needle was jammed into my arm and the green liquid was pushed into my veins, it was hard to hold back a scream, the needle hurt but the liquid burned! My body convulsed and heated up. Another needle in the opposite arm, more burning. Zola sat in a chair next to the bed and watched and made notes as my whole body stung and pulsed. I eventually passed out.
