When I awoke, I was back in the cell surrounded by the Howling Commando's as I opened my eyes, Bucky gasped.
"You're awake!"
"You were gone all day, most of the night and you've been laying here for God knows how long, we thought you were dead for a little while" Monty rushed to speak.
"What happened?" Bucky asked, helping me sit up,
"I was questioned and then beaten; I didn't say anything I swear"
"We knew you wouldn't" Gabe half-smiled
"Then what?"
"Then this doctor said I was going to be a lab rat for HYDRA and then he stuck me with needles the size of my arm!"
"Hydra? What's that?"
"I have no idea..." I looked to my arms to see the spot where the needles were administered were red and bruised "The stuff they injected into me was green... what could that have been?"
"I don't know of any green medicines, but I doubt they were giving you a medicine," Gabe muttered
"Some snake venom is green" Morita said with a frown,
"In what world would someone inject snake venom into a person?"
"I'm just saying..."
"Please, everyone stop, I'd rather not know," I muttered
"Yeah, same." Bucky lay a hand on my shoulder, "It'll be okay, if you're feeling okay, then maybe whatever is was doesn't work?"
"Yeah, maybe,"
Over the next couple of weeks, I was taken almost every day to be poked and prodded, Bucky followed after the first week, it seems they wanted us both as lab rats. By week 3 we didn't go back to the cells, we were tied to adjacent beds. By this point I couldn't stop the tears and the sobs, I cried for Bucky and for Steve and for everything that'd had ever went wrong with my life and then I cried some more. Ofcourse Zola has started to suspect something and it was found out pretty quick that I was a woman. Zola has furious, he screamed and yelled about how I was a waste and I had wasted his time and his experiment;
"Woman can't be super soldiers!"
I didn't understand that, but I put it to the back of my head. That day he stormed out and I expected men to come in take me out back and shoot me, but they didn't, we waited for days.
Then an explosion outside stirred us, Bucky groaned, I tried to talk back, we were both exhausted. Explosions and bangs kept coming and then yelling and cheering and gunshots. Then the door was broken down and there stood a guy wearing a US army jacket and helmet.
"Bucky!" He yelled running to his side, pulling off the straps holding him down "It's me, it's Steve"
"Steve?"
"I thought you were dead." He pulled him to stand.
"I thought you were smaller"
Wait, Steve? My Steve?
"Steve?" I croaked, his face was suddenly right there, but on a bigger body, "Steve?" I asked desperately, he looked confused then it seemed to click.
"MARY?!" He looked between myself and Bucky, "Why, what. Buck, why?"
"I-" an explosion interrupted me; Steve ripped the straps holding me down.
"No time, let's go"
Steve held me up and almost dragged me along and Bucky stumbled behind us,
"What happened to you?" Bucky asked Steve
"I joined the Army"
We stumbled through the building; Steve caught us up on the Super Solider procedure which turned him into... Not Steve.
"Did it hurt?" I asked, pushing myself to walk without support,
"A little," He answer distracted, trying to lead us to an exit.
"Is it permanent?" Bucky.
"So far..."
Explosions happened around and underneath us, Steve found a crossing over it all, but a German man was blocking the exit.
"Captain America, how exciting! I'm a great fan of your films," the German man and Steve walked towards each other on the metal bridge "So Dr. Erskine managed it after all.. Not exactly an improvement but still.. impressive"
Steve punched him, "You have no idea,"
Zola was on the other side of the crossing; he pulled a lever and the bridge halved and moved apart.
"No matter what lies Erskine told you, you see I was his greatest success!" The German pulled his face off... it was red and how I imagined an alien to look.
"You don't have one of those, do you?" Bucky muttered to Steve, I sure hope not.
"You are deluded, Captain, you pretend to be a simple solider but in reality, you are just afraid to admit we have left humanity behind. Unlike you I embrace it proudly, without fear!"
"Then how come you're running!" Zola and the Red-facedn man enter a elevator and the doors closed.
The factory exploded beneath us, Steve grabbed my arm and pushed Bucky "Come on," He led us to a stairwell, which we quickly climbed. He pointed to a beam, "Go."
I coughed out a laugh, "You can't be serious"
"Bucky. Get Mary across," Steve ordered, "Now, Go!"
Bucky grabbed my hand, "Just run."
That's what we did.
