Note: This is a Reylo FanFiction (slow-burn)

Autor's Note:

Spoiler Alert! I've been asked about Dark Rey and her ending up as the Chancellor/ Ruler in a few reviews and plenty of messages. Since I added Dark Rey, I wanted her to take the position: 1st history tends to repeat itself, so we are having a Palpatine again as a ruler, 2nd she is perfect for that position, Mishivious enough to be a politician but not evil as the Emperor was, and 3rd we need balance in the galaxy guys. ^_^ Now, let's see how things will turn with her around ^_^

「Act 69: The night before

Ajan Kloss, 38 ABY

Finn's heart thudded. Somehow he knew precisely what Poe had come to tell him earlier: Ben's trial would be an emotional roller coaster for Ben and them. Poe was in and out with communication with officers, Senators, and any other authorities he knew. He had managed to get approval to remove those heinous handcuffs around Ben's wrists and be accepted to be part of the council with Ben, as Acting Generals of the Resistance.

"Rey's still with Ben," Poe said. He was leaning against the communication panel, sending out the last details before the trial.

Finn approached from behind, resting his hands against Poe's shoulders. "You should get some rest, Poe. You are taking this way too personally." Finn said in disbelief.

"What the hell are you thinking?" Poe said. "Of course, it's personal!"

"Because of Ben," Finn pointed out as he remained close to Poe, "You know he can't change what he did as Kylo Ren."

"Rey too, haven't you noticed lately," Poe sighed and turned off the communication radio. "He will be held accountable, Finn, but not like that and with a Palpatine in the as part of the trial."

"Ben believed it might have a positive outcome, having her as a Chancellor," Finn answered, not grasping Ben's point of view.

"Yes, he has been annoying," Poe complained, "He agrees with the trial, he seems perfectly fine with a Palpatine ruling the Galaxy, and I am sitting here going crazy to handle the trial."

"You already have done enough," Finn added and pulled Poe up. "Let's get you to bed; you need to rest, to handle tomorrow's trial, fed up with the whole situation."

Poe struggled at first, but Finn was right. They had to face reality tomorrow. "Ok, Pal!" he finally agreed and followed him to their room.

Meanwhile, Rey turned out to be with Ben; she would not turn her back on him or let her guard down. Since they have returned to base and the announcement came, Ben acted calm and relaxed for being put through a trial a month now. Rey could hardly hear his thoughts any longer; he had raised all his walls and was waiting.

Stupid Ben!

"Rey, please," he said softly, "Leave. Get some sleep!" He had asked one more time as they sat there in the dim room in silence. They had a few meaningful conversations with Ben trying to calm her down and take away all her worries, but Rey already knew how serious the situation was.

"How about I sleep here, and we both get some rest!" she offered.

Ben shook his head. "You stayed last night, and the night before and so on..." he leaned his back against the wall and gazed at her. "You look tired and pale... Tomorrow it won't be easy; you should be rested and calm." he said, still in a calm tone.

Rey was angry. She couldn't understand Ben; how could he still keep it up without going insane. She declined his suggestion, like every night. "How can you not be upset, Ben?" she finally asked him, "Not, even worried?"

Ben lifted his gaze and observed her; Rey was showing her emotions and thoughts openly. She was worried about him, cried for him, and she was not hiding any longer how much she loved him. Ben, on the other hand, remained like a winter stream, cold and frozen. He didn't want to raise his hopes; he already guessed the outcome of the trial. True be told, he wasn't worried about it. He deserved it, after all. He was troubled about Rey and trying to keep it together.

"Rey," his voice came like a whisper, but Rey had heard him. "Tomorrow, you need to remain calm. We have talked about it..."

"Don't," she growled and upset, her voice almost cracking, ready to cry. "You keep acting like this is how it's supposed to end. You have shut down from everything and everyone, acting all cool... and calm!"

"Rey," he took a deep breath, her words almost breaking his guard he was holding for a month now, "Things turn ugly, but you already know that. I need to go through this; I need some closure... You have to promise me to remain strong. You are going to be fine!"

"Liar!" she argued; Ben never deceived her; his words always said the truth, even when they delivered painful truths. "You keep all your defenses up; you chose this to keep me safe."

He had to admit Kylo Ren was better with burying things and remaining cold. Ben had lasted for a long time but watching Rey, he hates this. Ben knew how things could end but still tried to ignore the seriousness of the trial.

"Death," Ben said under his breath, not sure how to start a topic like that without breaking down "isn't that bad... Actually..."

"No, I don't want this." And she didn't. Not from him.

"Rey, my past... what I did, it can't just be forgotten or ignored. You know this. If we are lucky and they hate me enough, they won't order for execution because it would be kind to work more in my favor. The monster being killed would be an easy escape." he said, gazing away; his heart ached, and he felt dying a little inside.

"Stop talking!" she demanded; her tears were now like streams. "I prefer not to hear it, not from you!"

"It's how things are, Rey," his calm was maddening, "That doesn't mean I stopped loving you less. I wanted to be as ruthless and tell you that I didn't love you, tell you that it was a little game to make my days better. But I can't, this fool can't protect you by having you hate me."

She gazed at him, weighed his words, and she knew that he loved her, how much he loved her. The stupid idiot had proven it too many times. She loved him as well; that's why accepting losing him now made it unbearable. She didn't say anything. She jumped into his arms and wrapped her arms around him, holding him tightly.

"No," she mumbled, "I wouldn't want that, Stupid Ben! Just don't try to hold everything inside,... to protect me? This time let me ... us ...help you, you are not alone in this, Ben, and you stop blaming yourself for everything. Because they would try Ben to pin all the crimes to you, and you seem fine with it. It's wrong!"

"I'll only tell the truth, Rey," Ben assured her. "There is no reason to fight, to accept and confess my crimes. And I have already allowed you and the other to help more than you should. Now, listen, you will remain calm and don't make things complicated."

All went silent for a moment; Ben managed to scan her; of course, she would remain calm, but that didn't mean she would not stand on his side and protect him if someone would try to harm him. Ben maybe couldn't see it, but he had changed so much; he was always given too much to aid others. He ended up putting his own life at risk to save them. He didn't care how difficult the task or how dangerous he would accept it.

Stupid Ben.

Ben sighed as her thoughts reached him, and he softly cuddled into her. "It's what I fared since the day I found out that I was alive. You don't listen; you could attack everyone tomorrow to make sure I will be treated fairly. But I don't want that Rey, I need to go through this trial without the drama. I need you by my side; yes, I am so selfish and admit it. But please..."

"Fine," she finally agreed, "But If things get oddly wrong, no one of us will stay down."

Ben smirked, "Stubborn wonderful Rey, my rebel..." he pulled back and looked at her, leaning closer and kissed her. He did want to have a serious talk with her. Tell her that she should accept the verdict, not go down the same path as he would, but he didn't. Ben paused and thought to take each step slowly. If the trial tomorrow's outcome were as he was accepting it to be, he would talk with her then.

He knew he was walking on thin ice, keeping up his relationship with Rey, although he should have ended it. But it was not easy; he couldn't lie to Rey; if he needed to end things with her and give his goodbyes forever, he would do it after the trial and in the right way. He was done making mistakes or hurting the people he loved. Accepting his misdeeds and the punishment was one thing, but dragging down the people he cared about was another.
