A/N: I'm gonna put a slight trigger warning just in case.
Finally, I have completed the update! We get to switch to Craig's POV for a bit this chapter and find out what happened to him. I was thinking that next chapter we get into Opie's POV. Let me know what you think!
PS- I should have an update for 'Dear Theodosia' and FBC soon. I got a little caught up in my Smallville fic that I've been working on and left those stories hanging. Much love xx.
We were quiet for a while. My dad wasn't really looking at me and I was trying to figure out where to start.
"You know you're really good with her," I commented absently.
My dad looked at me with his eyebrows furrowed.
"Maggie," I stated.
He let out a small smile, "She reminds me a lot of you when you were little."
"Let's hope she doesn't end up like me as a teenager."
"I don't understand why you didn't tell me that Opie got you pregnant."
"How could I? I was still so scared to admit it to myself."
"I never would've made you leave."
"I didn't know that then. I thought for sure you'd kick me out. That's why I thought that if I told you I was going to school in Baltimore, you wouldn't come after me for a while. And I figured that when you did, I'd tell you that I was pregnant with Baz's baby."
"Where does he fit into this?"
"He wanted to help. He knew I didn't want to tell Ope. Not after what happened."
We were quiet again. The sound of Gemma and Smurf in the kitchen was prominent, so was the dull roar of everyone conversating with one another. My dad took a deep breath and exhaled loudly.
"You know one of the worst days of my life is the day you left. It was almost like watching your mother walk out all over again."
"I thought you weren't there when mom left?"
"I was. We argued. She packed her shit and walked out. Before she left, she said that there would come a day when you'd figure out who I really was and you'd leave too. When you left, I thought she was right, it was happening. Then you were just gone."
"You told me not to come back. What was I supposed to do?"
"I'm sorry, Savannah. I never meant that. I always wanted you to come back. I was- I've been- pissed at myself for a long time for not handling that right."
"I should've just told you the truth."
"Hindsight, I guess."
I nodded.
"Your mom says that… you and your husband are having some issues."
I rolled my eyes, "It's nothing. It's fine."
"Well, if it is something, I'm here. Anything you need."
He got up and kissed my head before heading back inside. I guessed that meant things were clear, or as clear as they were going to be, and went into the house taking Shep from Smurf and holding him tight, pulling Maggie into my side.
A few weeks after the party, Pope had come by to take the kids out for a while. I didn't know why he'd done it, but I was grateful anyway and knew that the kids loved spending time with him.
"Sav? Are you home?" I heard Deran shout.
"Yeah, I'll be right down!" I yelled back.
It sounded like someone else was with him, so I tossed my hair up and went downstairs.
"Hey, what are you-" I stopped, frozen in my tracks.
Deran and Baz were standing in the living room… with Craig.
"Sass, I'm so sorry," Craig said.
"Sorry? You're sorry? I haven't seen or heard from you in weeks and you're sorry?" I screamed.
"I can explain. Please, just let me explain." he pleaded.
"Sav, just listen," Baz told me.
I immediately turned on him, "You knew where he was this whole time. And you lied to my face! More than once!"
"Sass, please," Craig pleaded, "Let me explain."
"What are you going to explain? Why you missed your son's first birthday? Why you've been acting like such an asshole? Or why you decided to take off?"
"Savannah, I'm asking you, please," Baz mediated, "Just sit down and listen to what we have to tell you."
I crossed my arms over my chest and shifted my weight to one hip, "Why should I?"
Baz made a face and clicked his tongue, "Alright, fine. You want a divorce? You want us to take Craig back with us? You guys split? Just say it."
I stared at him in disbelief. I couldn't believe what he was saying. Craig looked sick at the thought and Deran shifted awkwardly in the corner of the room, watching the whole exchange.
"All you have to do is say it, Savannah," Baz continued, "It won't change anything between me and you. I'll still come around for Derry. I'm sure the same goes for Pope and Deran."
"Barry-"
Baz got close, putting a hand on my shoulder, looking me in the eyes, and pointing at his brother, "But you say it. You look him in the eyes and tell him that you don't love him anymore and you want him to go. You tell him that you want a divorce."
I moved my eyes from Baz's intense stare over to Craig. Tears ran down his face, but his face was stony, almost like he was waiting for the words to come out of my mouth. I opened and closed my mouth a few times, willing something to come out.
"Sav, I know I fucked up. Worse than I probably realize. If you want me to go… I will." Craig told me. His voice wavering.
I shook my head, crying, "No."
"No?" Craig repeated.
"No, I don't want you to go. No, I don't want a divorce," I sobbed, "I love you. I've always loved you and I want to be with you. I thought you felt the same."
"I do! Savannah I do love you and I love our family."
"Then what happened?"
Craig sighed and dropped onto the couch.
"Sit down," Baz whispered.
I sat in the armchair and stared at my husband, waiting for his answer.
"I was at a party, down in SoCal, just trying to blow off some steam. I started drinking and before I knew it… I was with Renn and we were…" he trailed off.
"You were what?"
"We'd taken some pills and had a little blow."
I scoffed, but it came out as a choking sound.
"I thought I'd be ok the one time, but it was like once I started I couldn't stop."
"We found out. Had him go south for a while. Cody style rehab." Deran remarked.
"Is that why you were always at the house?" I asked Baz.
He nodded, "I wanted to look out for you guys. That and you know we've been having our own beef with Smurf."
"What are you talking about?" I inquired the boys.
"Smurf knew what he was doing. Wasn't exactly discouraging him." Deran answered.
"That and she's been screwing us on jobs," added Baz.
"Bitch," I whispered, "So what now?"
"He's not coming back down for a bit. Unless you changed your mind and want him to go."
Craig looked hopeful, grabbing my hand between his large ones.
"Did you sleep with her?" I asked.
"No," he answered.
"Don't lie to me. Did you sleep with her?"
"No! Savannah, I swear on Shep. I never slept with anyone else."
I took a deep breath, "You need to go to counseling. Or something. This can't happen again, Craig. I won't do it to the kids."
"Whatever you want. I'll do it, I swear."
"So what now?" I asked Baz.
"Craig's out. For now," he told me, "I'm on the fence about doing jobs with Pope and Jay. But Deran and I already decided we're done with Smurf. When Craig's one-hundred percent again he can come back."
"What about Pope and Jay? I don't get what you're going to do about them. They're going to find out sooner or later." I replied.
"I'm going to see where Pope stands. But I think Jay's out for good. I don't trust him."
I nodded, then stood up, "I'm going to take a shower before the kids come back."
I went back upstairs, leaving the boys in the living room.
CRAIG POV
Later on that night, after Sav put the kids to bed, I sat down on the bed in the guest room, still winding down from the day. Savannah may have forgiven me, but she wasn't going to let me back into our bed anytime soon. I was really just happy that she didn't decide to leave me. I heard someone knock twice before opening the door.
"Hey dad," Derry called from the doorway.
"Hey, what are you doing up? It's late." I told him.
He shrugged, looking that the doorknob.
I figured something must have been bothering him.
"Come in here," I said, pulling the desk chair next to the bed.
Derry walking further into the room and sat at the edge of the bed. I sat on the chair and tried to meet his gaze.
"What's going on?"
"Are you going to leave again?" he asked.
"No, Slim. I'm not going anywhere."
"So you and mom aren't getting a divorce?"
"No! Why would you even think that?"
"You left! Mom cried all the time. She even took off her ring. I didn't think you were coming back."
"Listen, Der," I sighed, "You're old enough to understand a few things. I messed up big time with your mom and you guys. Shep and Maggie are too young to get it, they probably won't even remember any of this. But, you will. I love your mom and I love you guys. I made a huge mistake and your mom had every right to ask me for a divorce if she wanted to. We're going to stay together and work this out. Everything's going to be ok."
"Are you sure?"
It was my turn to shrug, "I'm gonna try. It's not going to be easy, but I'm going to try."
He nodded, "I love you, dad."
"I love you too bud," I hugged him and kissed his head, "Go to bed."
After I heard his bedroom door close, I got up and wandered down the hall to the room Savannah and I shared. I knocked lightly, making her look up from the book in her lap.
"Derry came to talk to me," I informed her, "He wanted to know if we were splitting up."
"What did you tell him?" she asked.
"That I screwed up. But we were staying together and I was going to try and make things better."
"All of this shit hasn't been easy on him."
"I know. But I'm going to try and make it better. I promise."
"I hope so, Craig."
"I will."
And I meant it. Nothing was steady or structured growing up with Smurf. Being with Savannah and the kids felt solid. Sure things were rocky at times, but I could always count on having them. It only made me feel like more of a douchebag for almost throwing it all in the gutter. It didn't matter what I had to do, I would do whatever it took to get Savannah to forgive me completely. I already decided, along with Deran and Baz, to cut Smurf out since it was obvious that she didn't want anything but to cause problems. Anything I had to do to stay clean and stay with my family. I wasn't going to risk losing them.
