EPILOGUE

「Act 78: The Twins Kira and Zen

Tatooine, 38 ABY

The Falcon touched down on an empty desert plain. The twin suns of Tatooine had yet to show their faces, but early-morning light washed the land in pink and white. Rey and Ben descended the ramp and squinted against the reflected brightness. It's been a week after their wedding, and they finally had reached their destination: Tatooine.

Tatooine was a sparsely inhabited circumbinary desert planet located in the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories. It had been the homeworld of Anakin and Luke Skywalker, who would go on to shape galactic history. Part of a binary star system, the planet was oppressed by scorching suns, resulting in the world lacking the necessary surface water to sustain large populations.

Long ago, Tatooine was covered in oceans and rainforests, but it became a hot desert world for unknown reasons. Rey would love the green, but she could withstand the sand. She grew up in Jakku, and the desert, honestly, didn't scare her. On the other hand, Ben only lived for a year in Jakku; he hated sand. But he didn't complain, he would start a new life now with Rey, a family, and even if it were on a lava planet, he would accept the challenge.

Tatooine orbited twin suns, Tatoo I and Tatoo II. The whole planet was covered in harsh deserts, and only a small part of its northern hemisphere could sustain intelligent life. The place was so stark, the ground so bleached, it was almost like the salt flats of Hiila Basin back on Jakku. Rey stepped forward, toward a domed adobe building jutting from the sand.

Only Ben accompanied her.

Their friends had offered to come with them, but Poe had insisted they stay behind. He understood that they needed to do this alone. They carried four lightsabers with them, Their own, which two were hooked to their belt and the other two in Rey's haversack. They found the building, forgotten into time and sand, where Luke grew up; it was there where their new adventure would begin.

The project was already set, and the new academy would be built; it would take them years, but they had all the time they needed. Their friends would always be there to aid them, as now a new era was beginning, and with it, the past could find rest. The adobe building had an arched doorway, but years of wind and sand had half-buried it. There'd be no accessing the Lars homestead that way.

At her feet lay a tower panel from one of the fallen evaporators, slightly curved, large enough for one person to sit. She yanked it aside, turned it around, and aimed. Ben watched her as she sat with ease against the panel, pushed off, and Ben followed her. Tatooine was linked with his family's history, not a pleasant past, but a record nonetheless.

So many memories here. Ben, as well as her, could feel the -yearning, loss, worry, desperation, love- and not just Luke's. Two generations of Skywalkers had visited this place. And now the third was brought in the same place, what an irony. It was more overwhelming; he knew Luke's and Anakin's connection with the site, his grandfather, and uncle, and now he.

She wandered around for a few more minutes and discovered what used to be a speeder garage. Other rooms remained inaccessible to them, their entrances buried in drifts. Rey stood in the center for a while, taking it all in. Ben remained next to her, gazing at the open desert in front of them. Maybe this place, after all, seemed fair enough to live and raise a family.

Then Rey sat down against the sand. Ben remained next to her; she pulled Anakin's and Leia's lightsabers from her haversack. Holding them side by side in her hand, she gazed down at them for a long moment. Then she gazed at Ben, and he nodded; those lightsabers came from another generation of Jedi; it was time to put them away. She placed them on the ground, wrapped them gently into a small package, calling on the Force, she pushed, and the lightsabers sank, lower under the bed.

Rey stood, pulling out her lightsaber. She ignited it. A yellow blade sprang alive; Ben did the same; he was a black blade. They remained like that for a moment. Next, they turned off their lightsaber and placed them against their belts. Then they looked at each other and smiled.

"Hello!" came a strange voice and both turned, seeing an elderly woman approached, skin wrinkled and curious. Ben found it funny, an older woman passing through that forsaken place, but it seemed that JJ's grandma wanted a small role, so poor JJ gave her an important line. "There's been no one for so long," she said.

"Who are you?"

"I'm Rey," she said, "And this is Ben Solo!"

"Rey, who?" the old woman asked.

"I guess now that we are married, I am Rey Solo!" Rey answered.

"No," Ben argued, "Sorry, Rey, the remaining Solo in the Galaxy it's only me!"

"Huh?" Rey looked at him, confused, "Are you going to be so difficult now because of the name!"

"She is Rey Skywalker," Ben said and smiled at Rey. "Leia wanted you to have her legacy; I believe Luke wants this as well."

"But Ben, you are the last Skywalker!" Rey looked confused.

"I know!" Ben gave her a cocky smile, "But you are allowed to call yourself Rey Skywalker."

"Ah," the woman said, unsurprised. "See you around?" And she hobbled off without sharing her name.

Together, Ben and Rey watched as Tatooine's twin suns rose on a new day.

These streets could be in any city anywhere. Now that the corporations are exporting all over the Galaxy, they were the same style buildings in most systems. It wasn't any different for the Academy that they were building. New Artists were offered a place to live inside the campus to make the public spaces unique to them, to the culture. The color scheme was different, unique and a part of the Campus was already alive.

Residence blocks, stores, and medical units were slowly opened. The campus was slowly coming alive, and Tatooine's forsaken desert was only a small part of the planet. There were technical waterfalls, trees, grass, and gardens. The first Force-sensitive students had arrived; they were above 18, a lost generation, that the new Galactic Empire agreed to aid.

Rey was in command of the leading project, and Ben was always behind her supporting her. They had already created a small household in the center of the campus. Their offices were also located there, Ben and Rey were 24/7 available to their new duties, and they loved it. From time to time, some old friends would visit them. Poe and Finn were most of the time around.

Finn was busy, as he had built a refuge for Force-sensitive youth to live the life they never had. Those were only for children to have a home and to find their way. It was not to train any Jedi Order. The new generation had finally learned from the older mistakes, and this time they would try and keep the balance in the Force.

Rey and Ben had been living in Tatooine for a few months. Slowly they had found their way, life in Tatooine wasn't easy, but at least it was promising. There was always a lot to take care of, Ben had no rest, but he could understand why he wasn't sent there for vacations, he still was guilty of his past, and the daily life reminded him of that. The nights were worse, with his nightmares spring to life and his past asking him to pay his price. The experience was painful, but there were happy moments since Rey was with him. He could withstand anything.

Rey was busy; she was now a Jedi and responsible for the academy's project. Ben had noticed many times; she had to deal with a lot, like his mother. But Ben pushed her to stop, and he would aid some of their friends. And there was one more thing that was keeping her down lately, her pregnancy. Her due date was almost there.

Tatooine, 39 ABY

With each contraction came a pain that dominated Rey's entire being. In those moments, for those seconds that stretched into infinity, there was nothing else. Only her reminding herself she should have never done it with Ben. She would never have children again. As the pain passed, it was only for a minute or so, and she breathed with closed eyes, unwilling to re-engage with life outside of her own body. The room might as well have been empty for all the awareness she had, and when they did talk, touch, and gain her attention, she found it so hard. Yet, she kept reminding Ben that he was right as dead for putting her through such an experience.

'Stupid Ben' would pay for that.

The pain of labor was a prison for his mind. In that jail cell of fear and confusion, the time passed without him being able to keep track. Ben felt a mix of emotions he never had. At first, he was scared, terrified like he never was before. About Rey as her pains made it worse. He was afraid as he would soon be a father. And he was not sure how he would go through that. It was a title he never thought would be given to him. His responsibilities were now higher than ever. His stomach tightened; he was fully aware of his consequences of being a parent. Yet, he also felt the luckiest bastard on the Galaxy. Next to him was the girl, who was more important than himself. Soon one more critical person would be entering his life.

If that was not happiness, what could be?

Even Poe, Finn, and Chewie had not decided if they would stay outside the chamber or inside. They were nervously walking in and out, causing more anxiety to the pregnant woman. Times like that made them see how deeply they cared about Rey and Ben. Ben had won their respect on many levels, and beyond he would ever imagine.

Relying on all the attention she was getting from the medical staff, Rey had to find herself from the deepest recess of her mind, drag herself forward, use her voice, and open her eyes. One of the medical staff was telling her that it was time, time to push. With a guttural grunt, she did so and was told to stop; one was enough. Indeed the contraction was the worse part of the labor. When the time was there, for the babe to be pushed. Things were better, even with less pain. She felt the baby crowning, the hot stretching of flesh, and held her breath. Without any further effort, the baby slid into the hands of the healer. At last, a Boy and in seconds he was there, developing eyes opening, and he was crying. The young Solo that was a small image of Ben, won all the attention.

After her child was born, it was as if only sunshine existed in the world, as if all the earth was ushered into harmony. Everyone inside the room had eyes full of tears, tears of happiness. The new parents had a new consciousness, perfect and reaching out for love. In that instant, they both knew they would do anything to protect their child, that love was as vast as the universe yet solid as a rock. She was his mother, and Ben, his father. None or anything could change that as they both were overtaken by the small baby that was crying for more attention. Few new pains appeared and had Rey shout. It seemed there was one more baby to be born. And three minutes later, she gave birth to a baby girl.

They had twins.

Newborn cries fill the medical room, and the father burst into tears of relief and joy. He turned his dark eyes to his wife, and in an almost broken voice, he told her the second babe was their beautiful daughter. A daughter that looked mostly like Rey. Rey smiled through her exhaustion, and she let her eyes leave his face to take in the babies that were being brought to her. At that moment, she began to cry the sweetest tears she was ever known, all the pain of moments before melting away. The twins were only minutes old, and the world was already a brighter place with the two around.

Ben remained next to Rey and their newborn twins. He was still confused and scared of the outcome. Two babies were his and Rey's. Their world had changed on so many levels. His priorities had changed now. He was sure his instincts were making most of the changes. Yet, the hard work would be done by him and his mate. He told Rey how proud and happy he felt at that moment, how this would be the most precious memory that would never faint from his mind.

Rey was also happier than ever. She had forgotten that minutes ago she was swearing to kill him. The result of all the pain was worth it. They had two little ones. She decided not to be angry about that. The pair was lost at that moment. Indeed soon, the babies would need to be cleaned and fed. Yet, for now, they just enjoyed the moment.

Poe, Fin, and Chewie were not in a different state of mind. Their minds erupted in strange happiness. Two little beings were now part of their family. They vowed they would protect them at any cost: them and their parents.

A month had passed with the newborns having everyone running for them up and down. Those two babies never agreed. If the girl was sleeping, the boy was crying. If the girl was sweet and playful, the boy was hungry and complaining. Poe offered to be their nanny. Offer that was gladly accepted. They were trying to raise two babies and build an academy that needed hard work. True be told, the babies had enough people to take care of them. Ben and Rey were always around them. Finn also spent most of his time around the twins. Even Chewie and the droids could not avoid spending their time around them. And more people arrived after they were born.

The next problem that soon arose was about their names. Everyone had a suggestion about how babies should be called—everyone except the parents. Rey decided to name the girl Kira, and Ben agreed with her. They agreed about the name fast, and everyone seemed to agree. The only problem that arose after naming the baby girl was called the boy. The people that would suggest name after the name had nothing to add. Neither Rey nor Ben could find a suitable name.
