I May Have Miscalculated

Eyes closed, Inuyasha inhaled deeply as he draped one arm across Kagome's stomach and snuggled closer to her. Sure, this was far from the first time he'd been in this position - on his stomach and Kagome on her back- but never under the covers and without being hyper aware of her level of consciousness. That and he never went as far as to drape one leg over hers or press his body against her with any amount of pressure. A few days ago he'd gotten sloppy back when he still believed she couldn't hear him, too relaxed with the admission of his love not weighing him down, and almost got caught when his dumb ass fell asleep but thankfully she hadn't noticed even if she woke up a few moments later.

A slow lazy smile played on his lips when Kagome leaned over and pressed a soft kiss against his nose before capturing his mouth. It was gentle and chaste and everything he'd hoped it would be in a situation like this. Not that he ever thought it would actually happen but a man could dream.

"You still mad at me?" Kagome whispered quietly when she pulled back and Inuyasha sighed as he pressed a soft kiss on her shoulder.

"A little," he teased good-naturedly as he gave her a light squeeze, "But mostly I'm mad at myself."

"Why?" Kagome asked as she rolled onto her side and Inuyasha frowned.

"Could've been doing this," he pointed out as he opened his eyes and reluctantly turned to face her, "Could've been doing a lot of things."

Kagome nodded her understanding as she moved until she was almost flush against him -his breath catching as a faint blush bloomed on his cheeks.

"A lot of things?" she asked in a wholly un-Kagome-like tone that had butterflies flutter in his stomach. When she leaned forward and her lips began kissing down his jaw, he shuddered subtly as his lips parted. Chest heaving as her fingers traced his neck.

"Y-yeah," he breathed before whimpering softly when she began kissing his neck and his eyes fluttered closed.

"I'm sorry I lied to you," she whispered when she pulled back earning a frustrated growl, "I just..."

Capturing her mouth to cut off a repeat of their earlier conversation, Inuyasha slowly pushed her onto her back and lowered his weight on top of her as he angled his head to deepen the kiss. The sensation of her body beneath his was heavenly and a soft moan escaped his throat. Allowing himself a moment to get lost in the moment, he pressed his hips firmly against her before stopping himself from going further. This was not the time. And he needed to get things straight before...

"Don't worry about it. I still love your dumb ass," he managed shakily as he propped himself up and gently brushed her bangs away from her face, "Even if you do stupid shit all the time."

"Same," Kagome replied dourly and gazing down at her affectionately, Inuyasha chuckled softly at her expression.

"You do a lot of idiot things. Don't pretend you don't. Kidnapped constantly. Doing shit like cutting yourself to get attention," Inuyasha chided gently as he rolled off of her and onto his side, "And running around the dark without a weapon and with jewel shards."

"I was distraught," Kagome mumbled defensively, "Thought you hated me or something and..."

"It takes a lot for me to hate someone. You know that better than anyone," Inuyasha laughed softly with a contented sigh as he snuggled up against her and rested his head just over her shoulder, "But I probably shouldn't've hid from you."

Kagome blinked a few times as she tried to figure out how she was supposed to know that before her stomach plummeted. If anyone had given him a reason to hate them, it would've been Kikyo. And Inuyasha even told her why he'd refused to do it. Told her that even if she went bat crap crazy and turned murderous, he'd still love her.

She never should've been afraid he might hate her. Inuyasha may keep it well hidden but he had a very soft albeit bruised heart. A heart that probably couldn't handle another big let down and so he tried to delay the pain he apparently believed was coming by hiding in the one place he felt safe.

Kagome regretted keeping up her charade as long as she had. She should've come clean as soon she heard him say he loved her. It hadn't been to hurt him but harm had clearly been done.

"You're right. I should've known. So that's why you came here? To hide from me in my own room?" Kagome asked shakily as she reached up to scratch at the back of his head and he melted against her in response.

"Hm," Inuyasha mumbled as he subtly tilted his head into her touch.

"Why my room?"

Obviously not paying attention, Inuyasha nodded distractedly as his lips parted - her fingernails scraping against his scalp was overwhelmingly soothing and a soft vibration began building in his chest as the lingering tension in his muscles melted away.

"Inuyasha?"

A shaky sigh and a hum to indicate he was at least going to pretend he was listening. The miko's lips twitched upwards. It was obvious and precious that her petting had made his mind so far gone.

'Like a puppy,' Kagome giggled affectionately in her mind, 'Loving pets.'

Inuyasha's peace and bliss filled expression continued before he shivered when she minimally increased the pressure. A bomb could've gone off and judging by his expression, he wouldn't notice.

Kagome grinned wickedly.

"I'm going to dye my hair red to match your clothes,"she teased barely above a whisper and he nodded tiredly like he agreed.

"And dye your hair too so we match," she continued and Inuyasha continued his mindless nodding as he leaned into her touch with a bliss filled smile. Laughing softly and feeling immensely powerful, Kagome adjusted her head and watched as his face slowly went slack and his breath evened out while she continued to drag her fingers through his hair. The fact that this, of all things, was putting him to sleep was surprising but adorable.

"Inuyasha," Kagome whispered as she stopped scratching the back of his head earning a slight pout, "I love you."

Inhaling deeply, Inuyasha's lips twitched upwards before his face went completely slack. As much as Kagome would like to lay here forever, on her back, watching him sleep and not disturbing him, she was exhausted herself and couldn't fall asleep like this. Gently and meticulously rolling onto her side, she heard a soft mumble before Inuyasha's arm tightened and pulled her against his chest. Another soft mumble and one half nuzzle later, the tension is his arm fled and his hand reflexively twitched beneath her body.

Kagome hummed as she snuggled in and closed her eyes - the warmth from his body permeating her flesh. His breath tickled her neck in rhythmic fashion and with a soft smile, Kagome fell into the deepest sleep she had since before she fell down the well.

Amber eyes slowly blinked open into the soft pale light of dawn as his groggy mind slowly registered the feel of Kagome's body against him. Against his will, a single tear welled in his eye as he squeezed her to him and she, in response, startled awake.

"Inuyasha!" Kagome gasped as her hand began blindly feeling for his face and he reached up to grab her wrist and pulled it down to her chest.

"No good morning?" he teased happily as he squeezed her again and buried his nose in her hair, "Just yelling at me right off the bat?"

"You just scared me is all," Kagome groused as she tried to turn to face him and was instantly welcomed with a kiss. Then two. And three. Each soft and quick and followed by the most adorable little hum.

"Good morning Ka-go-me," Inuyasha cooed as he nuzzled her nose. For her part, Kagome was more than a little shocked at how happy and how vulnerable and how affectionate and how playful Inuyasha was being. It was like finding out he was loved after all and getting to sleep by her side had made him high.

"Good morning," Kagome laughed as she reached up to brush his bangs away from his face, "Sleep well?"

Inuyasha nodded as he closed his eyes and smiled.

"I think that was the first night I've ever slept the whole night," he admitted with a relieved sigh, "But it is easier to sleep here normally so..."

Kagome grinned. Apparently he was going to keeping oversharing with her confirming her theory that once you got Inuyasha started, he did not shut up.

"...and bring a pillow with you," Inuyasha finished his ramblings offhandedly as he let out a long contented sigh.

"I've tried and it won't fit," she informed him and Inuyasha made a slight pout before cracking one eye open.

"Fine but from now on, every inn we're doing this," Inuyasha informed her firmly, "I don't give a shit if the others talk. It's happening."

Rolling her eyes, Kagome scooted closer until her head nestled beneath his chin.

"Oh but not every night?" she teased and Inuyasha shook his head.

"Too dangerous over there," he sighed as he adjusted himself into a more comfortable position and buried his nose in her hair, "And that sleeping bag barely fits you. How would it fit both of us?"

"You wanted me to share with you in that cave," Kagome pointed out and Inuyasha snorted.

"I was half-joking," he clipped back with no real bite, "Did you hear everything I said in there?"

"By the end yeah," Kagome sighed as she buried her face, "But see you can behave."

"Well you went a little crazy so I couldn't really try anything now could I?" he teased earning a faint blush, "There'll be time for that later."

Kagome choked and Inuyasha laughed.

"Calm down. I'm just teasing," he chided before adding, "Well kinda anyway."

"Inuyasha we're not even..." Kagome had to clear her throat and try again, "We're not married or..."

"You wanna be?" Inuyasha asked - half-joking and half-deadly serious, "I mean you're the right age for it. And we can be careful until Naraku is defeated."

"I just got into high school," Kagome argued weakly, "And..."

Her lips parted as she realized that she was honestly not going to need any of this stupid school when she did stay in the feudal era. Then again...dropping out would...

"It'd bring dishonor on my family if I dropped out," she tried to explain when she felt him tense up after her first statement - his breathing somewhat sharper as his mind raced and his heart plummeted.

"So..."

"I mean do you want to get married?" Kagome interrupted before he could fully get the wrong idea, "It's just we'd need to be careful. You know...if we do...what married people do. And with Naraku..."

Just the idea of being with her intimately had Inuyasha biting back a moan even as fear gripped his bruised heart. To give himself to someone so completely was terrifying. He wouldn't be able to survive if Kagome decided she didn't want the kind of life he'd be able to provide for her. If she abandoned him...and she...

"You'd stay with me, right?" he clarified thickly, "The school thing is just about honor?"

Kagome nodded and as he relaxed, she felt his breath cascade over her hair. It made sense he wouldn't want to make a commitment which would only end badly like everything else had done in his long life. Inuyasha was a man who fought hard for everything he'd earned. Would gladly throw his life away for others. A loyal man who'd suffered more than any man should.

"And you didn't answer my question. Would you marry me? I need you to be sure. For you...because I wouldn't...just you can't leave me if you say yes. One and done," he continued - the worry evident despite his attempts to mask it. Kagome let out a long exhale herself as she nodded while her heart began to race.

"I can agree to that," Kagome affirmed shakily, "You've been alone most of your life and if we do, you know, one day get married, I'd never let you be alone again."

Closing his eyes and letting out a disbelieving laugh, Inuyasha squeezed her tightly as he buried his nose in her hair. His lips moving against her temple as his words were spoken against her skin. A lifetime of being loved, being accepted, having a home, and a place to belong? A lifetime of kisses, of security and feeling this happy? Having Kagome as his wife was more than he had expected and definitely more than he deserved. How could he refuse?

"We'll I'm ready now if you are."
