I May Have Miscalculated
Huffing, Miroku glared at the couple curled up around each other from his place on the futon. At first, yes, he'd been happy for them but while he still was, it was also endlessly frustrating to have to bear witness to his friends getting what they wanted while he was still getting hit upside the head for every attempt he made. His sapphire eyes shifted over to the slayer peacefully sleeping a little distance away.
Miroku had all but told Sango outright that he loved her - nearly died for her every other day and yet she still rejected him. Worse yet, it was obvious Sango loved him back. She loved him back and still refused him. It was maddening. It could be them on a futon cuddling up. Could be them kissing each other good morning and good night. In the few short months since Kagome had her little bout of hearing loss, Inuyasha and Kagome had been glued to each other's side to an almost nauseating degree. Holding hands. Sitting so close to each other at dinner they might as well just sit in each other's laps but then again, they did that too. Worst of all, they thought no one had put two and two together or that anyone noticed how they'd sneak off and come back flushed and a little disheveled. The occasional moan or whimper or even soft cry that could be heard through the thin walls of various lodgings. That was the worst part of all. To know someone was having what the monk desperately wanted.
The only part that didn't irk the monk was that Inuyasha's mood and bouts of anger had significantly lessened. The easily triggered half-demon almost had a normal range of emotion anymore.
Miroku huffed again as he wondered whether Sango would stop being so violent if they were actually together or whether he'd suffer from concussions all his life. It would be worth it either way but he'd much prefer the former.
In any case, that wasn't to say he didn't understand whySango was hesitant but it had been months since he'd asked any woman - other than her - to bear his child. Hadn't groped anyone - other than her. But still it wasn't enough.
Miroku chewed the inside of his cheek before turning over to face the wall. Tomorrow was a new day. Maybe he'd just ask her and be done with it. Know once and for all whether she'd ever marry him or whether he was just wasting his time. After all, confession seemed to work wonders for Inuyasha's plight. The same might be true for him but it'd take a miracle to get Sango to say yes.
The next day came and, as it would turn out, miracles dohappen. A year went by and another miracle occurred. Naraku was soundly defeated after consuming the jewel - which turned out to be a grave error on his part. After all, the jewel didn't make you invincible despite the power it gifted but Naraku obviously believed he was immortal and began making some rather novice mistakes. With nothing more to do, the two couples settled down in the village they had come to call home and lived rather boring lives the likes of which none of them ever believed would be true. For two of the four, the most shocking part of it all was that they lived. Feeling blessed by peace and stability of it all that had replaced years of aimless wandering and fear.
So many miracles. None of which would ever have occurred but for one slight miscalculation.
