Disclaimer: I do not own Danny Phantom
AN: This, series, like most of my other stories works on the premise that Danny's secret was not universally revealed in Phantom Planet. Only a few select people, including his parents have been told.
Part 2: The Powers that Be
"I'm sorry, I didn't recognize your voice, Mr. President. I didn't know it was you. I mean I wasn't expecting…" Danny trailed off uncomfortably.
"I thought you were the one with the secret identity," there was no mistaking the amusement that was behind the voice.
"I suppose you are in the need-to-know, but, please…" Danny paused unable to think how to beg the President to keep his secret, "Sir, if people were to find out…"
"Your identity is the upmost ultra top level secret," the President promised.
"Uh, thanks. You might like being in the lime light but it would destroy me," Danny shuddered.
"The world owes you a great debt of gratitude, the least I can do is respect your wish for privacy."
"I appreciate that, sir," Danny told him.
"If I may, I would like to ask you a few questions," The words were polite but Danny could hear the implications behind it; tell me what I want to know or else, I'll tell what I know about you. This was a powerful man who was used to getting what he wanted. But after dealing with Vlad, Danny felt on familiar ground.
"Is this a threat?" he asked.
.
.
"A threat?" the voice sounded genuinely non-plused.
Tired of innuendo, Danny decided it would be best to lay it out on the table, "I have something you want and you have a hold over me."
Danny could almost see the man stop and mentally back-pedal. He thought he was calling a wide-eyed kid barely sixteen years old that totally overwhelmed by being called a hero by the President of the United States, instead he found himself confronting a savvy negotiator.
"I just wanted to thank you for have done for us," the President insisted.
"Then how come GIW agents have paid a visit to my friend, Tucker Foley demanding he turn over information about me?" Danny's voice had hardened.
"The GIW is being investigated. It seems they may have greatly overstepped their parameters. There is a distinct possibility that they will be disbanded," the man actually sounded apologetic.
"It'll be a moot point if I'm already dead, or 'disappeared," Danny said grimly.
"As President of the United States, I can grant you immunity."
"Even if you do, you'll only be in power for two years, six if you get reelected and who else knows? What about other countries?" Danny asked.
