Portals and Impediments
"You say the Ghost Zone is fatal to living things from our world; but your friends went into the Ghost Zone to rescue you, and they seem to be unharmed," the President pointed out.
The President was unaware of just how many times his friends had ventured into the Ghost Zone with him and Danny decided that he didn't need to know.
"Mostly they were shielded by my parents' Specter Speeder. Some of the ghosts lairs also have a certain level of protection," his voice trembled slightly, "but it was dangerous. We didn't know how dangerous. We were very lucky."
.
.
"Still, it shows that it's possible for humans to travel safely through the Ghost Zone with proper precautions," the President pressed.
Danny's parents had blanched when they learned that Sam and Tucker had gone EVA*1 in the Ghost Zone. There was a reason they wore hazmat suits. Maddie and Jack had immediately subjected his friends to a very thorough Fenton-style medical exam. The word 'relieved' didn't even begin to cover it when the results showed there had been no harmful effects.
"Maybe," Danny allowed cautiously.
"Tell me more about the portals," the President requested. "Can they be constructed anywhere?"
.
.
Danny rubbed the back of his neck. "I told you that the Ghost Zone is the space between all of the possible universes and that natural portals sometimes form between the weak places that's between them."
"Weak places? Like Amity Park?" the President surmised.
"That's why my parents moved here," Danny confirmed.
"How did they know?" he asked.
"More physics and way, way, too much math. Something called 'Brane Theory.*2 My mom says it's as if these universes are sheets and sometimes they touch. That's where portals form."
"So it is possible to find these weak points and control them?"
.
.
Danny could almost hear the wheels moving in the man's head. If portals could be controlled, they would be incredibly powerful weapons. No wonder Frostbite had made him swear the Infi-map to secrecy.
"No. Natural portals seem to be pretty random and don't last for long. Something about Chaos Theory*3," Danny countered.
"What about your parent's portal?" the President asked.
"The Fenton Portal is stable. Which means it can stay open but you can't pick where it goes or move it."
"Not ideal but still usable," the President said thoughtfully.
"It can be locked," Danny added, "from either side."
*1 EVA – Extra Vehicular Activity. NASA term for being outside the spaceship. Space walk.
*2 Membrane Theory – an offshoot from String Theory.
*3 Chaos Theory – In a complex dynamic system that is sensitive to initial conditions and has divergent consequences, it is practically impossible to predict what will happen. In this case it will make it impossible to predict where a portal will go.
AN: Please forgive the liberties I have taken with scientific theories. This is a work of fantasy and if it makes you feel better, you can replace the word "science" with "magic" with equal effect. If you want to learn more about the real science, feel free to look them up so you can point out where I went wrong.
