Poking Holes in the Universe
"You mean ghosts can blockade our access to the Ghost Zone?" the President's voice hardened.
Danny sighed. They were all for stopping ghosts from coming to earth even to the extent of being willing to blow up the whole Ghost Zone; but then got all indignant when they could be barred from entering the Ghost Zone. Humans.
Danny tried to put it into familiar terms for the President. "It means we'll have to work things out. Surely, Homeland Security has dealt with border crossings before."
"The question is, is it more like crossing into Canada or Iran?" the President asked.
.
.
"I think that's going to be up to us. Most ghosts would rather be at peace with everyone," Danny said.
"That is not what my reports say," the President said doubtfully.
"That's because the most aggressive ghosts tend to be the first to take advantage of a new breach between worlds so we're seeing a disproportionate number of them," Danny explained.
"That doesn't negate the threat," the President countered.
"I'm the first person to say that some ghosts badly need to have their butts kicked back into the Ghost Zone, "Danny said, "But most just want to be left alone."
.
.
"Putting aside the question of just how friendly these potential visitors are," the President said diplomatically, "just how permeable is this separation between universes?"
"What?" Danny asked, confused.
"We already know that some ghosts can enter our world even without the portal. The question is, is there some sort of back door that we can use to get into the Ghost Zone?" the President asked.
"You mean other than the Ghost Portal?" Danny asked.
"Yes," the President answered.
Danny shook his head, "Besides natural portals, there's nothing that will let humans get to the ghost zone except a ghost portal."
.
.
The President paused before he resumed the conversation, "I have a memo from the US Patent Office. Apparently, your parents have filed for a number of interesting patents, including something they named the 'Fenton Bazooka'."
"…and?" Danny asked encouragingly.
"According to the application, it punches a temporary hole into the Ghost Zone," the President elaborated.
"The Fenton Bazooka makes a singularity that can suck ghosts back into the Ghost Zone," Danny explained.
"Can humans pass through?" he asked.
"Pulled through a pinhole?" Danny questioned. "No human could survive."
"But as you said, openings to the Ghost Zone goes both ways."
.
.
The President seemed hooked on the idea.
"Not this time," Danny explained. "The bazooka mimics a natural portal so you can't control when or where it ends up. We already talked about how dangerous that can be."
"GIW analysts disagree. They say the success of 'Operation Spirit' hinged on being able to open a portal," the President said as if setting a trap, "or knowing when and where one was going to open up."
Danny's stomach felt like it had swallowed a bowling ball that no amount of intangibility was going to help. He swore not to reveal the Infi-map.
AN: I'm sorry for the slow updates. I don't think I've every written and rewritten a story so many times but my Danny-Muse felt he just had to keep bringing up more Plot Holes left over from Phantom Planet. I have a great deal of gratitude to Truephan for all the time and patience she gave to help fix up then next few installments.
