Phone Call part 10: Experimental Ethics
.
.
"You don't need superpowers to be a hero," Danny told him.
"It is the right thing to do," the President said simply.
"Doing the right thing isn't easy. Trust me: I know," Danny said.
"I suppose you would," the President agreed. The problem is that not everyone agrees on what the right thing is."
"For what it's worth, Wulf is fiercely loyal and would do anything to help a friend. He has risked himself for others before," Danny said.
"You?" the President guessed.
"Yeah, but also other humans. I think that proves that some ghosts can be friendly," Danny said.
.
.
"That remains to be seen," the President said.
"Or unseen," Danny quipped.
The President obviously didn't have Tucker's sense of humor.
Danny continued, "Ghosts have been leaking into our universe from the beginning and up until now, hardly anyone noticed them."
"Until now," the President repeated, "Why is that?"
"Partly because natural portals are rare and unpredictable; partly because it took more energy than it was worth to most ghosts; and partly because there wasn't enough ecto-energy to sustain them when they got here," Danny explained.
"What has changed?" the President asked.
Danny hesitated.
"The invention of the Ghost Portal."
.
.
"The portal makes it a lot easier for ghosts to enter our world," Danny admitted. "And being stable, the ghosts know where they are going to end up."
"So that works both ways, huh?" the President surmised.
"Yeah," Danny confirmed. "And then there's the energy thing."
"What 'energy thing'?" the President asked.
"Ghosts can absorb the ambient energy in the Ghost Zone but the real world is like a barren desert. This is why you don't have to worry about a full scale invasion. Most ghosts can't stay long," Danny clarified.
.
.
"Again, that's not what my reports say," the President countered.
"The Fright Night and Pariah Dark actually moved Amity Park into the Ghost Zone. He's no longer a threat." Danny tried to make his voice sound confident as if it hadn't been a close thing.
"Yet, ghosts keep coming," the President said.
"Natural portals let ecto-energy in. They have become more frequent since the Ghost Portal was created. Amity Park has become an oasis of ghost energy; not enough to feed ghosts indefinitely, but enough to keep them going for a while," Danny explained.
"So it is your parents' fault ghosts are getting into Amity Park," the President accused.
