Birthday Card
The burnt smell wafting upstairs alerted Maddie that Jack was probably trying to cook her breakfast in honor of the occasion. It was a sweet gesture even if it meant that it would take her an hour to scrub the pan afterwards.
When she reached the kitchen, she was surprised to see it was Danny not Jack manning the stove.
"Hi Mom!" he called cheerfully, "Happy Birthday"
"Oh you shouldn't have!" she said sweetly, eying the plate of charred and greasy pancakes, adding silently in her head "really, you shouldn't have."
He wiped batter from his hands onto his pants and presented her with a card.
She hoisted a smile onto her face as she opened the envelope. She sighed inwardly and wished her family hadn't insisted on making a big deal about it. At least the decorations wouldn't go to waste; they could save them for Jack's birthday in two months. Her husband had enough enthusiasm for the both of them. He was as excited about turning fifty as he had been at turning five. Maddie would rather just forget the whole thing.
She opened the card and read the inscription.
"Happy Birthday… You're Never Too Old to Kick Butt."
But instead of Danny's messy scrawl the card was covered in dozens of signatures. Every single one of them was glowing faintly.
Maddie looked at her son in open-mouthed surprise.
"These signatures…. are they ghosts?"
Danny grinned. "Let's just say you've made quite an impression in the Ghost Zone."
An: I'm with Jack - Celebrate! You're never too old for fanfic!
With special gratitude to my son on his birthday I hope it was a special day as he made mine special.
