Wild Winds and Sea Spirits Crossovers

Something mentioned by Kyryst on Space Battles is that people might be having trouble with my story due to how the crossover elements are working in the story and how they fit or affect things. One of the reasons this is a 'multi-cross' is that there are crossovers that 'set up' for the main story in one manner or another and some that aren't going to get involved for a while, maybe not even in this particular thread depending on whether the story gets split into different threads once certain arcs are finished or not.

Bear in mind the starting point for the thread is right when the protagonists get involved in the Abyssal War at 14 and counting the posts I've written for the Things Involving Shipgirls that are No Longer Allowed list, they can get up to their early/mid-twenties, which is a fair time frame not even going into some of the ideas I've got.

I'll try to explain a bit on the ones involved to the point in the story I've written to, but not all will be immediately hitting those who I'm focused on. Having said that, just doing 'supernatural/mythological beings are real' kicks its own hornet's nest because there can readily be multiple series that can 'fit in' to the work.

Heck, just being on Earth in 2014 can give rise to a lot of crossover potential all one needs to do is look at media set around the period.

Main

The main focus crossovers of the story.

Kantai Collection: The seas are rife with monsters, creatures that in most cases appear to be extremely pale women roam the waves sinking any ship that they come across, disrupting trade and annihilating small island populations. The one thing that can stop them, shipgirls, the kantai no musume, women and girls with the ability to use rigging allowing them to fight on the waves and bearing the spirits of ships that once sailed the azure main.

Karas: The supernatural and mythological beings exist, mostly slightly out of phase with the natural world; however there are those that would disrupt the balance between natural and supernatural, real and 'unreal'. To protect that balance a Karas is called from humanity, chosen by a yurine, a personification of the town or city (or ward/prefecture) they fight to protect the innocents and citizens, killing those that they have to, protecting or healing those they can. – In the OVA there are a number of Karas seen, though only three play an important role, one being the protagonist, all have armour reminiscent of a crow. For this fic I am changing the terms some to be more in line with a British variation. The yurine or city spirit is often a genius loci or ysbryd dinas in Welsh while the Karas is a rhyfelwr or warrior.

Past Crossovers

Crossovers that have an effect on the story setting rather than the story itself, most notably why the Abyssal War and where Britain got some of its tech.

NecroVisioN: During WWI Germany found themselves on the defensive against an overwhelming weight of numbers from what would become NATO and in desperation they opened a portal to hell to attempt to bring forth unstoppable soldiers to fight for them. In the game you play Simon Bukner, a US soldier on the front lines and one of those to encounter the hordes of walking dead. Unlike many zombie games, in this one the zombies don't go down and stay down easily, particularly if they're backed up by other creatures. You also encounter things similar to the Warhammer 40K dreadnaughts and a scorpion tank both of which are destroyed; however one of the endings (which depend on your difficulty) is what I'm playing with. It pretty much says that Simon's actions bought humanity a century to prepare before he comes back leading the forces of hell. 1914-1918 is WWI; the Abyssal War is started in 2012 nearly a century later.

Mythology: What happens when myth is real? Well a lot honestly, even when many of the beings involved are more hidden than usual, there are always those that get involved in events. There is far, far too much in myth to really cover all the effects it might have on the world should it be real, however, there are some events that occur. The most obvious butterflies from this being that people would have warded/protected areas both to keep things in and out and that there are those that have to handle the supernatural one way or another leading to a lot more hunters (Ghostbusters, Supernatural, etc.) both official and not.

The Flying Dutchman: The Dutchman was said to be a real ship lost with all hands somewhere around Cape of Good Hope in the 1700s is rumoured to haunt the waves, never to make shore and sightings generally come before dangerous events. In the fic, she shows up while HMS Myngs and Z9 Wolfgang Zenker are battling during WWII only to be sunk by the two of them.

Tamara: Tamara the Hell Nymph was supposed to have been trapped in the spring that acts as the main source for the River Tamar in England by her father due to her infatuation with a pair of giants that roamed the nearby moors. Depending on when one sets this, it could be as late as the Roman period or as early as the end of a recent Ice Age. I'm going for the latter event, with the story passing down through retelling by various lore keepers. Tamara herself is Ancient, easily old enough to have been a goddess to the first settlers of the region and she has gained 'governance' over a fair amount of territory over the millennia. She is also related more closely to the Jones family than might be apparent right now. It is Tamara, or Lyrene Tamar as her current incarnation is known that acts as the Yurine/Genius Loci/Ysbryd Dinas for the Karas/Spirit Warriors of Plymouth and a good chunk of the local lands.

SeaQuest DSV/Carrier Command Gaea Mission: The combination of the two is very, very roughly the source idea for what the ships that gave Britain its post-modern technologies. As an aside, it is dang near impossible to find any post-modern tech blue water navy media with surface ships or both surface and submarine types. The closest I'm aware of is Arpeggio of Blue Steel, which is probably anti-matter or post anti-matter tech rather than fusion. SeaQuest actually has enough material around that I know it fits the fusion/MHD tunnel tech I want (and some of the fan designs are pretty close to how I see the Umbral- and Antaeus-classes) while Carrier Command is roughly the right level even if the ship doesn't portray it (fuel is a thing that gets burned PDQ) but was the inspiration for the Unicorn-class while I was writing snippets for the Rulesverse. Of course this combination brings its own hornet's nest of things to deal with. Better computers, better power, different propulsion methods, better armour/weapons (yes the UK had missiles early, they just didn't start really building them until WWII and only used them after an attempted attack by German V1/V2 rockets as nobody wanted WWI extended or to kick off another too soon after), a different Space Race, etc.

Minor

Mentioned or emulated items not really a focus at this point in time though they might have effects on the run of the story later.

Sailor Moon: The twins have several pen pals scattered across the world, one of Megan's is Rei Hino or Sailor Mars and having been friends has had an effect on Rei. That said; the Sailor Moon series itself is a minor thing for the story in focus, though there are possible plans for some interactions. If nothing else, it means the JGSDF will be busy on internal issues as well as coast watch while the local shipgirls try to protect the islands of Japan.

Disney Gargoyles: Mentioned as another friend of Megan's is a Disney-style were-gargoyle ala Demona (human by day, gargoyle by night. I haven't decided on her full background so haven't decided if Jolie had a similar run in with Puck or a similar trickster or if it was something else). Apart from there being gargoyles added to the mix of supernatural/mythical and them being the same style as in the Disney cartoon series, there's not really anything added to the fic at this point.

Let's Plays/Media

Crossovers that are not part of the story but rather are media that exists within the story universe. Yes this has been done in other things where someone references or has a copy of something that is media for another story/game/whatever.

Witcher: Mentioned. As mentioned above with supernatural/mythical beings being around, there are going to be those that fight them. The Karas aren't the only ones that try to protect humanity from threats. All that said, the series (all versions) is not crossing in, though the media exists and some people use it as a 'template' for how to set up for fighting monsters. The twins' father, Tomas, tends to emulate a combination of Geralt (The Witcher) and Van Helsing from the film of that name staring Hugh Jackman when having to fight supernatural beings.

Star Trek: As one might expect, with an upswing of technology particularly from the UK resulting in the Internet being created early, Britain having its own space industry along with computers far ahead of those the US and Russia had access to and several more famous/infamous ships from the British fleets there was a significant uptick in 'fan works' early resulting in a new series of Star Trek featuring a new space dock and several new hero ships, a trend that had a knock on effect to several other sci-fi series.

Shivers: A 1995 Sierra adventure game that has the player locked inside an abandoned museum on a dare and forced to discover just what caused the disappearance of the owner and two local teens. They also have to recapture as many of the beings involved (Ixupi) as they can. Sally plays a rebuilt version of this during the second mini-arc Game Time.

Ghost Master: Another cross through the Game Time arc, this one Rika (Fubuki) plays. In this game the player takes the role of Ghost Master, heading to several locations around the town of Gravenville to encourage belief in the supernatural, free spirits trapped by the actions of the spirit or others, scare the hell out of mortals and eventually free an ancient being known as the Darkling.

Realms of the Haunting: Megan's game from Game Time, once again this has been rebuilt and was originally published by Gremlin Interactive. The game itself is a Call of Cthulhu influenced FPS/Adventure where Adam Randal is drawn to a nexus between worlds (including Heaven and Hell) in the form of a manor house to find and free his father's soul. Along the way he meets both friends and foes in a fight for the destiny of Earth.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Naka (Hikaru) is the one to play this game, with the others explaining several known theories for the game's world. The game itself is a fairly simple survival horror where you must keep animatronics from entering the office your character is held up in for the week working at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. If you fail, your character dies forced into a still occupied animatronic body.
