The sound of thunder rumbled through the room as the rainfall became more intense. Raindrops steady drumming on the window and on the other side a eight years old Jaune Arc settled down for bedtime.
Unlike what his sisters would have said, Jaune wasn't afraid of the storm. No sir, he was too old for that. But he did had a problem with the sound, how was he going to fall asleep with all this noise?
" Why won't it stop?" Jaune whined and he covered his ears under the blanket.
" Just ignore it, Jaune."
"I'm trying." Jaune whined again, sinking deeper into his bed. Every time he got close to sweet, sweet sleep the storm would somehow snap him out of it.
The voice hummed. "Would it help if I told you a bedtime story? "
" What kind of story?" Jaune asked, lowering his blanket. Completely forgot his attempt at trying to sleep.
"You'll see," The voice let out a laugh at the boy's change in attitude.
As Jaune made himself comfortable in his bed, the story began. "Once upon a time, there lived a king and queen who had eight children, the youngest of them all was a little knight. One day the young knight was allowed to travel outside his home with his parents. Having never seen much of the outside world, the knight grew curious and began to wander. So amazed by the new sights, the knight completely forgot about his mother's warning from straying too far. And in his excitement he did not notice bandits lurking in the shadow. The bandits, seeing that the child was alone and distracted, decided to snatched him away."
" No." Jaune gasped. " But the knight can fight him off, right?"
" The knight tried, but no the bandits were too strong. The bandits took him to a nearby forest, he tied the knight to a tree and had planned to use him to demand for all the gold in the land. Before he could act on that plan however in step a lone sorcerer. The sorcerer had seen the bandits run with the struggling child and chose to help him. So without a word, the two clashed. The sorcerer summoned lighting with his magic while the bandits charged with their bl-"
" Who won? Who won?" Jauned demanded, interrupting the story once more.
" I was getting to that." The voice chuckled for a bit before continuing. " The sorcerer, although powerful, was reckless. He had run after the bandits without a thought, forgetting even his weapon. And even though he came out victorious, he was injured greatly in their fight. As he freed the young knight from the rope, creatures of darkness gathered around them. Drawn by the bandits' greed and the knight's fear, the demonic beasts charged at the two. The sorcerer tried to fight them off, but no matter how many of the beasts he cut down more would appear. Knowing that should he run with the knight, the beast would descend toward a nearby town the sorcerer asked for the knight to run and warn the town. Although he was afraid the knight did so."
At this, the voice paused as if he wasn't sure what to say. A minute of silence turned into two and soon the only sound that filled the room was the constant drumming of the rain outside.
" What happened next?" Jaune, tired but curious about the story would end, asked.
The voice stayed silent for a few more seconds before carrying on with the story " The young knight came back with help and together they fought off the beast. After the fight the knight invited the sorcerer to go with him back to his home kingdom and the sorcerer graciously accepted."
"Then they lived happily ever after." Jaune concluded with a small smile on his face as exhaustion got the better of him.
As the child drifted off the sleep, the voice sighed. " That they did. And hopefully so will we."
