Prologue

June 19, 2019

The moon, the nightly source of light, is glowing brightly in the starry sky as it looked down upon the seemingly quiet Canadian forest. But it was not to last as the rising sun was close approaching as the lunar sphere moved downward from the sky. Within the woods is a small island inside of small lake, only being connected the rest of the forest is a short narrow landmass and some thick sturdy roots. On the cliff of the island is a hallow tree overlooking the vast water reflecting the beautiful untainted sky above.

This is Tree Haven. The nesting place of the Silverwings (also called silver-haired bats by the humans). It's a ancient tree of oak once struck by lightning lightning many ages ago before the colony's ancestors decided to make it their summer roost.

The animals slept peacefully as the fireflies danced across the air as they slowly disappeared, one by one, as morning approached. Especially the young male chipmunk nestling inside his hole in the tree.

...

...

"AGHHHHHHHHH!"

The yell of agonized pain woke the chipmunk casing him to jump abruptly as he hit his head on the ceiling of his humble abode.

The source of the yell came from within Tree Haven. A female bat is in middle of giving birth... except it is happening two weeks earlier than the scheduled births for all the pregnant mothers of the colony.

"AGHHHH! IT HURTS SO MUCH!"

This Ariel. A female Silverwing with purple-navy fur, orange hair, and orange mane. She's roosting with her head facing upwards.

"Ariel! Please hold onto your tail!" Spoke Aurora, an elder of the Silverwings. She has russet-pink fur with grey hair and a dark grey mane.

"But—"

"You don't want your pup to fall do you!"

Ariel whimpered due to the pain of her contractions.

"Just hang there just a little longer my dear."

"How's she doing?"

The bat that flew down next to them is Frieda, chief elder of the elders. She has light-beige fur on her head, arms, and feet while main body is colored rosy-pink with a dress-like appearance. Also has white hair with grey tips, dark-brown mane, and the back of her wings are dark purple while the front is light pink. Frieda also has a purplish-grey eyeshadow, black eyeliner, and a metal band on her right wrist.

"Fine, if I can try to get her into her birthing position."

The next one that flew down to next her fellow elder is Lucretia as she said "This is not good."

She has mauve colored fur, blackish grey hair, and dark grey mane.

Aurora hushed Lucretia harshly. "Don't upset her even further! We didn't expect this to happen."

"None of us have." Frieda added.

"I wish Cassiel was here!" Ariel cried.

Her mate/husband, Cassiel Silverwing, went missing in spring with some of his fellow bats to find the truth of the bands they wear. On the night he left, Cassiel promised to return... but he never did.

"Ariel. Look at me."

The soon-to-be mother looked at her chief elder as the old one smiled gently at her as she cupped her cheeks.

"I bet he's thinking about you too. So don't just do it for him, also do this for your pup."

Ariel nodded as she then held her tail membrane forming cup-shaped basket.

"Alright Ariel." Aurora encouraged. "Now push!"

Ariel's screams continued to echo throughout the forest until silence remained. Then after what seems like an eternity, a sound of a newborn bat was heard as the sun rose in the horizon.

"Congratulations my dear." Aurora said happily. "It's a healthy baby boy."

Ariel was back to hanging upside-down as she held her newborn in her arms as tears of joy dripped gently from her eyes.

"You did well Ariel." Frieda said congratulating her.

"Finally it's over."

Frieda and the other old ones looked up seeing Bathsheba, their fellow elder, removing one her claw/finger from her ears. She has dark-grey fur, white hair, and silver mane.

"But like that runt is going to last long though."

A look of worry swept across the mother's face as she asked "What you mean by that?"

"Pups born early than planned die due to their frailty."

A gasp of horror escaped from Ariel's mouth.

"BATHSHEBA!?"

"What? It's the truth Aurora! And you know it."

Aurora bit her lip.

"Yes, and you know that some survive to live past adulthood."

"Yeah. Some do."

"Don't listen to Bathsheba dear." Frieda said comforting Ariel. "Aurora's right. As long you constantly check on your pup and feed him regularly, he'll be fine."

"I will."

"Actually Bathsheba, it's not over." Lucretia teased with a sneer. "In two weeks, you're going to experience this again. But hundreds more."

Bathsheba's eyes went wide as she she grabbed both sides of her head as she groaned miserably. Lucretia let out a amused smile of satisfaction.

"So... what have you decided name to him Ariel?" Frieda asked.

"Well," Ariel began to answer, "Cassiel and I decided if it was a boy, we name him Shade."

"Shade... that's fine name."

Ariel smiled. "Thank you."

"I leave you two alone then."

Frieda then took off until she reached the Elders Roost of Tree Haven as the other future mothers all began to congratulate Ariel and also inspect her pup.

As she hung by the edges of the mushrooms clinging to the walls of their home, Frieda began to ponder with great intent. Also there's never been a Silverwing born during the rising sun either. Is this a sign?

The chief elder put those thoughts aside for now as she began slowly began to drift to sleep.

Angela "Ange" Wycliffe, a sixteen-year-old Caucasian girl, is walking through a developing somewhat foresty public park of Venice, Los Angeles of California at eight o'clock at night to quickly get back home. She has light brown wavy hair and cactus-green eyes while wearing dark brown cowgirl hat with a drawstring, pink t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and brown shoes with white socks.

She didn't realize how late it was after she was done with the rehearsals for a play at her school, Venice High. Normally her father wouldn't mind except for the fact of continuous kidnappings that's been happening across the United States back in December. People, both young and old, have been disappearing when they've been walking alone at a night like this. Ange really had no choice since the two friends that partook in the play already left and she couldn't wait for her father since he was at the hospital with Grandma Mamo. She recently got surgery on her knee and is staying there for a bit.

And right on cue, her cell-phone began to ring as she quickly answered it.

"Hello?"

"Sweety, are you still at the your school?"

"No, I already left. I'm in middle of Crystal Park."

"Angela!? You should've stayed back at school! You know it's dangerous to be alone with the kidnappings lately!"

"I couldn't daddy. You know they close when past eight to students. Besides I'm half way out of the park."

She could hear her father sigh in slight frustration.

"Where are you exactly honey."

Ange then stopped and looked at her surroundings. She sees a playground surrounded by wood chips with benches on sidewalks alongside a small clearing of grass, perfect for a picnic.

"I'm at the center of the park. You know, with the playground."

"Alright Angela, I already left the hospital. I'm close to the park so I'll pick you up on foot once I get there. So stay put."

"I will." Ange promised as she sat down on one of the benches. "By the way, how is Mamo?"

"She's fine. Hates being stuck there though."

Ange giggled sweetly. "Sounds like her." God I love her.

"I'll be there soon as I can. Love you hun."

"Love you too d— OUCH!?"

Ange nearly dropped her phone as she felt something stab her right arm. She then looked at it and saw what appears to be a syringe dart with a clear barrel... and whatever contents it contains was already injected into her!

Panic began to overwhelm the teenager as her body began to shiver abnormally. Ange didn't realize that her father was calling frantically for her on the phone.

"ANGELA, WHAT HAPPENED?!"

The girl then answered back repyling with fear. "DADDY, I'VE BEEN SHOOT WITH A SYRINGE!"

"WHAT?! ANGELA, RUN TO THE PARKING LOT AS FAST AS YOU CAN! I'M ALREADY HERE!"

Ange already stood and began to run.

"Okay da—"

But she only took five steps as the teenager began to feel her heart race quickly as dizziness began to overtaken her.

"I don't feel so good."

She could her father curse on the phone upon hearing her. He would never do that, being a Christian and all. If he swore, he must be really worried and scared for her.

"ANGELA HIDE! I'M ALREADY OUT OF THE CAR COMING FOR YOU!"

"Daddy..." Ange said with a tired and somewhat delirious tone.

Then out of nowhere, her body began to feel abnormally hot as intense pain struck every part of her body while her veins what seems to feel like freezing and boiling at the same time. Ange dropped her phone as she screamed in extreme pain as her body began to lurch and spasm out of control, in which causing her to drop to the ground hard doubling the pain for a brief second. Her insides felt like it's being compressed in and outward while her limbs twisted and turned aching in agony. She slowly began to lose consciousness as tears began to stream from her eyes. Then suddenly, with her fading vision, sees two mysterious hooded figures slowly approaching her, in which filling the teenager with great fear.

Oh no!? Am I—

The last thing she heard before everything went black is her father screaming out for her on the phone.

Author's Notes

Angela "Ange" Wycliffe's (her name sounds like Angie) appearance is inspired by Mimi Tachikawa from both the original "Digimon Adventures" and the 2020 remake anime series.

Frieda's appearance is the same as her 'Character Bio' from the Silverwing season set DVD.

My version of Tree Haven is inspired by both the first design of it from the Silverwing Wiki and the original in the TV show.

Crystal Park is my own fictional location in Los Angeles. Inspired by Crystal Cove of the Scooby Doo franchise.

BTW, Ange's grandmother's nickname is pronounced "Mah-Mow".

The syringe is about the same size and shape as the Syringer Ammo from the video game "Fallout 4".
