warning Trauma, violence and language.
He felt like every single bone in his body was crushed and his brain was close to exploding in his skull. He was sprawled out across a filthy blood stained floor in agony, his face covered in blood and cuts. Tony Stark dressed in his best suit walked around him in a circle, not a single scratch on him looking as though he had come from the fanciest dinner. 'You killed my parents' He stated as he circled the beaten man on the floor who was now crying in pain.
'I'm sorry' He sobbed curling his body up trying to block out the pain and the pulsing feeling in his head. .
'Now I have to kill everyone you care about' Tony said in a casual tone.
Bucky's head snapped up to look at the man, his eyes tear filled and pleading 'Please no' he begged 'Just kill me' He sobbed as he tried to pick himself up off the floor but failed and collapsed back against the cold hard floor.
Tony knelt down in-front of him and grabbed him by his hair to force him to look at him. 'You know' he began his tone still very casual. 'I don't have to kill anyone, you will do it yourself eventually' he said wish a small smile playing on his lips. He let go of bucky's hair pushing him back down to the ground. He stood back up dusting his suit down. Bucky kept his face against the floor crying into it, the pain was too much. 'You are a monster and no amount of intervention from Steve, Shuri or even Sam Wilson will change that' Tony said looking down at the pathetic assassin lead in front of him. 'You're the winter soldier. A cold blooded killer' He spat.
Bucky placed his hands on the floor and gave everything he had in him to push himself up to get on his knees. 'I can change' He said in a quiet strained voice.
Tony laughed and shook his head. 'No you can't, look what you have done' He gestured for Bucky to look to his side when he did his chest grew tighter, the pain grew and his blood ran cold. Steve, Sam, Shuri and every person he had ever helped him led on the ground soaked in blood, all dead. Bucky brought his hands up to his head and pulled at his hair screaming as Tony stood and laughed.
'Murderer'
Bucky hit the floor with a bang as his vibranium limb came into contact with the wooden floor. his eyes wide and mouth open slightly as he was breathing heavy, he had accidentally fallen asleep on the Sofa. He pushed his metal fingers through his sweat filled hair and groaned, he closed his eyes and tried to slow his breathing down. "just a dream" he whispered to himself feeling thankful he hadn't killed any of his friends. He shook of the feeling and tried to not think about it, the murder, the blood or the late Tony Stark whom he never had a chance to give a real apology too.
He placed a hand on the sofa he had fallen off and used it to pull himself up. Once he was stood up he quickly walked into his bedroom grabbing a hoodie of his bed and shoving it on before heading to his front door, he needed a distraction and a run sounded really good to him at this point. He made a quick exit from his apartment and silently ran down the many flights of stairs until he was out of the building. Judging by the lack of traffic, the colour of the sky and the scattered drunks around the area it must of been around 4 he thought to himself. He didn't give the people another thought and took of running at a rapid pace, no drunk would question his speed, they probably wouldn't even notice him.
The air was crisp and a light layer of snow covered the ground he ran on, he ran down the path and cut through a park jogging for a good hour before turning and heading back to his apartment. He had managed to clear his head slightly, the cold fresh hair hitting his face like a constant wake up call, instead of thinking about the dream he stared down at his feet as he jogged deciding counting his steps would be a good distraction.
His mind preoccupied and still jogging he pushed the door open of the apartment block and collided with someone knocking them forward into the railing of the stairs. His eyes widened as he heard a gasp of pain and saw a much smaller person in-front of him dressed in all black, he assumed it was a child from the back "Shit... sorry" he blurted stepping forward to pull the small child up who was still leaning on the rail. He reached to grab it's arm but the person spun around before he had a chance. "Lucky" he breathed not being able to hide his shock. His small neighbour stood in-front of him dressed in black running pants and a way to big on her black hoody concealing her hair. Small pieces of her dark hair poked through the sides, she wasn't wearing makeup but her cheeks where pink probably from running he assumed.
She frowned at him and brushed herself of ignoring the small pain in her rib from colliding with the metal rail. "You're always in a rush Bucky. Got somewhere you need to be?" she joked with a semi serious expression on her face.
Bucky didn't take note in what she said instead he thought about how petite she was and how seconds ago he mistook her for a child, he couldn't help but wonder why she was out so late and alone. "You have been out" he stated with a serious expression on his face.
She smiled a little and cocked her head to the side. "Yes, so have you" She said in an obvious tone gesturing to the door behind him he had just flown through.
"It's dangerous out there at night, you could get attacked" He stated bluntly his expression not shifting from serious, Lucky frowned she couldn't help but be annoyed at the comment.
"You where out!" she snapped.
"I can protect myself" He said matter of factly.
She let out a small laugh. "So can I" she mumbled before turning around and beginning to jog up the stairs in an attempt to flee from the insulting man.
Bucky rolled his eyes and began to ascend the stair. "I doubt it" he muttered under his breath. Even though she was jogging and he was walking he still managed to catch her up by the time they reached their shared floor.
Bucky thought about what his doctor had said and pretty much what every person had said to him since he left Wakanda about being friendly and polite to people, he rolled his eyes and his mouth opened before he had a chance to think about what he was saying. "If you ever want to run early knock on my door. I don't sleep much so..." He trailed off not wanting to go into to much detail he felt as thought he had already said to much.
Lucky had reached her apartment and stuck the key in the door, she smiled and shook her head. "How do I know you're not dangerous?" she asked in a quiet voice looking up at him. His blue eyes stared back at her blankly, she couldn't help but smile, he was so big and muscular yet he looked clueless, it was adorable. "You don't talk to women much do you Bucky?" She asked giggling a little at the end of her sentence.
He swallowed hard beginning to feel anxious "I don't" He answered honestly.
Lucky frowned she had a hard time believe someone that looked like him had no luck with women surely woman threw themselves at him. "May I ask why?" she asked sweetly still smiling at him.
He broke eye contact and looked down. 'if she knew who you were she would run for the hills' he reminded himself.
"I'd rather not talk about it" he said quietly still looking at the floor, he heard her sigh and looked back up to see her unlocking her door and pushing it open. "I don't mean to be rude. I am actually trying to be nice" He told her honestly.
She pulled a face "You're doing a great job" she answered in a sarcastic tone.
He shoved his glove covered hands into his pockets "I feel like your being difficult" he grumbled.
Her eyes widened and couldn't help hide her shock. "Because I am a woman and I don't need your help that makes me difficult?" she asked as she lent against the frame of her door.
He closed his eyes and sighed kicking himself for the comment. 'god I am shit with people' he thought to himself. "No I didn't say that" He blurted visibly becoming more flustered.
Lucky giggled and pulled her hood down letting the wavy dark hair spill out of it. "I am kidding" she reassured him. Bucky stood staring at her with his mouth hanging slightly open. "Lighten up Bucky I know its early but you seem half asleep, didn't your run through the park wake you up?" She teased. He remained silent "Anyway nice to meet you again Bucky, maybe I'll take you up on your offer some day" She told him with a small smile. She dissipated into her apartment and closed the door behind her leaving him stood in the hall alone trying to process what just happened.
He covered his face with both hands and dragged them down across his face and let out a groan. "What is wrong with me" he whispered to himself. He shook his head and walked to his apartment. He pulled his gloves off and shoved them into his pocket and took out his key thrusting it in the lock with way to much force, he kicked the door open and took one step in before stopping dead in his tracks.
His eyed widened and heart began to race as something hit him that she had said. Without thinking about it any more he turned and marched back to her door leaving his wide open. Without any effort what so ever her raised up his right leg and kicked her door clean of its hinges sending it flying through her living room, Lucky screamed in shock before making eye contact with Bucky.
Bucky stood in her doorway with a deadly look on his face, her panic filled eyes staring at him "What the hell" she screamed, she didn't have time to say anything else Bucky lunged forward and grabbed her by her neck lifting her off the ground and slamming her into the nearest wall. His vibranium fingers wrapped around her tiny neck causing her to loose air. "Stop" she choked as tears beginning to fall from the corner of her eyes.
His blue eyes suddenly seemed so much darker as they stared into hers, she knew this was it she was going to die. "I didn't mention running in the park" He said in a low voice.
Tears rolled down her cheek as she tried to wrestle his hand on her neck with both of hers. "What?" he voice was barely a whisper.
His eyes burning with rage seemed to get darker and more evil by the second. "I never said I ran or that I ran through the park" He hissed through his gritted teeth. He slammed her into the wall again causing a quiet choked cry of pain from the woman.
Lucky felt herself beginning to loose consciousness, her head began to feel light and her eyelids fluttered. "I assumed, I'm sorry" She choked hoping he would hear her. His expression didn't shift as his Steele blue eyes stared into her light ones as they faded out. "Please, you're hurting me" she begged. Without any warning he let go and she fell to the ground gasping for air.
His eyes widened and his expression changed from anger to confusion, the realisation of what she said hit him like a train.
"You weren't following me?" He asked in a deeper voice than she was used to coming from him. She didn't look up she just held her throat with both hands and sobbed. "You're not a spy?" he asked quietly.
She violently shook her head "No what the fuck" She cried. Her back was against the wall and her knees where pulled up against her chest she was visibly shaking, Bucky felt a dull ache in his chest looking down at her. Without thinking he dropped to his knees in front of her, she dared to look up and let her eyes meet his, instead her eyes settled on his black and gold hand that had just been wrapped around her neck "You're him.. the winter soldier" She gasped in horror.
His eyes pleaded with her more than his words ever could. "I'm sorry" he begged. He reached out to touch her "Let me help" He offered in a soft voice, miles different from the voice he used when strangling her against a wall.
She jumped out of her skin and tried to move as far away from him as she could, it wasn't much as she was already backed up against a wall, her breathing was heavy and her eyes wide. "Please don't" she whispered as more tears threatened to spill "Please" she begged. Bucky looked horrified at what he had done but didn't move from in-front of her. "I won't say anything please just leave my apartment" She begged wrapping her arms around her legs and pulling them closer to her. He noticed the red handprint on her neck and tiny cuts when the viburnum nipped her skin.
His eyes softened again and he reached out to touch her leg "Lucky" He whispered to her.
She didn't notice the tears in the corner of his eyes before closing her eyes and screaming. "GO". Seconds later she looked up and he was nowhere to be seen, simply vanished like she had asked. Still breathing heavy she pulled herself up on the wall and ran to her bedroom locking herself in. The door would have to wait to be fixed, right now she just wanted to hide.
He spent the next four hours relentlessly pacing around his living-room. He thought about many things like how he could of thought his neighbour was some sort of spy, the guilt he felt for hurting her. He also thought about grabbing his backpack and just running away again, he knew if he did that he would have the US government after him. He tried to think of a way to leave, somewhere he could go where he would never hurt anyone again. His thoughts where interrupted by loud banging on his door. He froze and stared at the door for a few seconds before walking over and looking through the peep hole, Sam stood on the other side. He groaned and rested his head against the door for a few seconds before pulling it open.
Sam looked up from his phone and frowned at the brooding man "You look like shit" He stated before walking straight past him and into his living room. "You didn't text Becky back last night man what's wrong with you?" He asked in a sassy tone. Bucky closed the door and locked it, Sam was already on the sofa skimming over the back on the book Bucky had been reading the night before. "So you and Anne had a nice night I take it?" He asked with a grin on his face.
Bucky swallowed hard and began slowly walking over to the arm chair to sit across from his friend. "I um-" He began but what cut off by two soft knocks on the door. His and Sam's eyes met in an instant, Bucky never got visitors to his home. Sam frowned at Bucky's reaction.
"You expecting company?" He asked, Bucky shook his head slowly. Sam stood up and began walking over to the door, he peeked through the hole but saw no one on the other side. Curiosity getting the better of him he unlocked the door an opened it, he noticed a cellphone on the floor with a note attached. He bent down to retrieve it and began to read 'You left this at my place' Sam grinned unable to hide his amusement and shock. "Bucky, Bucky, Bucky you got some explainin' to do man" His tone was excited he turned and walked back into the apartment and threw the phone and note down on the coffee table in front of Bucky. "So whos the lucky girl or guy, no judging" Sam asked as he threw himself back down on the sofa grinning from ear to ear.
It guilt washed over him again as he eyed the note on the table "Fuck" He muttered running his hand through his hair, something Sam noticed he only did when he was worried.
"What's wrong, you finally got some. This is a celebration man" He said trying to lighten the mood, he knew something was wrong but with Bucky there was always something wrong so he decided not to ask.
Bucky let out a deep sigh and sat in the chair opposite Sam. Sam stared at Bucky who was acting more weird than usual in his opinion, Bucky stared down at his vibranium hand thinking about how easy it would of been to snap her neck, she s Lucky to be alive. "No, it's not that" He sighed and covered his face with his hands. "I- I fucked up" he muttered into his palms. Sam raised an eyebrow and sat forward in his seat.
"I don't follow" He said.
Bucky's hands fell from his face and onto his lap, he looked up at the light fitting on the ceiling feeling as though he was unable to look at Sam. "I attacked a woman last night" He admitted, there was a silence from Sam, Bucky looked down and Sam's mouth was hanging open with the most horrified look on his face. Bucky's eyes widened. "Not like that" He added quickly hoping Sam didn't think he was capable of such a thing. "My neighbour Lucky, I hurt her last night because I am so fucking paranoid" He explained, he remembered the look in her eye as he held her against the wall and stood up to begin pacing again.
Sam was momentarily lost for words, he knew Bucky had his issues but he would of never expected this. "She's lucky?" Sam asked in a curious tone.
"No that's her name" Bucky mumbled still franticly pacing around the room one hand messing around pushing and pulling at his hair.
"Cute" Sam noted.
Bucky glared at him. "Sam" He warned.
Sam threw his hands up and shifted in his seat. "Tell me everything" He said casually, Bucky couldn't help but notice how calm his friend was, no screaming or judging not even a disappointed look on his face, just calm. "Bucky I am your friend, I know I am not Steve or Dr what's her face but you can still talk to me man, c'mon" He urged patting the seat next to him. Bucky nodded and took a seat next to him on the sofa crossing his arms over his body.
He gritted his teeth together and took a breath "I had another nightmare" he began looking down at the floor instead of Sam.
Sam nodded, he knew about Bucky's dreams not what they were specifically about but he knew he had them often, he learnt that a few days after the battle with Thanos when they spent a few nights in the same hotel room until accommodation had been figured out. "How are the sleeping pills working out?" He asked genuinely concerned for the soldier.
Bucky shook his head. "They're not" He said flatly. "I decided to go for a run and I bumped into Lucky when I got home, she'd been for a run too" He carried on taking a small pause before carrying on. Sam didn't rush him, he knew Bucky wasn't a man of many words. He would never let it be known but he was shocked he had even opened up to him about this in the first place. Sam knew he was slowly starting to trust him. "She said something and it made me think she was following me, spying on me" He continued before stopping again.
Sam nodded. "So what you do?" He asked.
Bucky looked up finally making eye contact "I kicked her door down and strangled her" his tone was soft and innocent, they didn't match his words at all.
Sam's eyes shot open as wide as they possibly could from shock. "What the fuck man" He yelled only causing Bucky to cringe at the memory.
"I know she was terrified I feel so bad I wish.. I don't know" he trailed of. He lent back on the Sofa sinking into it and closed his eyes wishing he could just leave and never come back.
Sam sat confused and shocked at the information until his eyes settled back on the note that sat on the coffee table. "And you left your phone at her place" he said out loud trying to make sense of it. "And she returned it?" He asked in a confused tone.
Bucky still lead back on the sofa covered his face again "She's nice" He said quietly into his hands. That was the only reason he could think of she would return his phone after he attempted to murder her in her own home, in fact she had to be the dam nicest person in the world to do that.
Still confused Sam stared at Bucky "Have you spoke to her much?" He asked.
"No" He mumbled.
"What she look like?" He asked now sounding more curious. He was shocked at Bucky nearly killing a woman but he was more shocked Bucky had actually said out loud she was nice, he smirked a little at the thought of Bucky speaking to a woman.
"Small about 5 foot maybe, shoulder length brown hair, blue eyes she's um pretty" He mumbled awkwardly. He hadn't opened his eyes but he could picture her, she was pretty he noticed that straight away, but now he didn't see the pretty girl smiling when he thought about her, he saw her crying pinned against a wall.
Sam smiled and sat back one the sofa next to Bucky. "So just so i know i am getting this right. You were scared of your incredibly petite neighbour that you also have a crush on was following you? and instead of asking her out like a normal person you tried to kill her in her apartment" Sam teased in-between laughing.
Bucky smacked his arm lightly "Sam" he wined.
Still laughing Sam patted Bucky on the shoulder. "I'm kidding, man come on" He said with a smile on his face. They both sat there quietly for a few seconds. "But you did fuck up" Sam reminded him.
Bucky opened his eyes and sighed. "I know" he said quietly.
Both of them stared up at the ceiling "Are you going to speak to her again?" Sam asked.
"No" Bucky replied quickly, from now on he would make a conscious effort in avoiding the neighbour.
Sam pressed his lips together tightly and nodded to himself. "Probably for the best" He admitted, Bucky nodded. A few moments past before Sam sat up straight causing Bucky to mirror his movements out of habit, usually when Bucky was in the company of men it was in some form of fight, if your man moved you moved with him. "You got beer?" Sam asked causally like the conversation between them hadn't just happened.
Bucky frowned "Its 9 in the morning".
"I didn't ask for the time grandpa I asked for beer" Sam told him in his usual sassy attitude, Bucky didn't respond he just closed his eyes and threw himself back down on the sofa.
Fuck my life he thought.
She'd dealt with a lot of shit in her life and a lot of bad people that brought additional shit into her life but never would she of expected that to happen to her.
It only took her about 5 minutes to calm down after the incident, after 5 minutes she exited her bedroom, scolding herself for locking herself away like some scared little girl. She grabbed the door from the floor and began wrestling with it to push it back into the frame. It was no easy job, she was musclier but the door was wide and she was struggling. Just as she managed to get it up against the wall her cell phone began to ring. She groaned loudly before grabbing it and flipping it open. "What?" She growled shoving the phone in-between her ear and shoulder so she could use both hands to move the damn door.
A thick British accent poured through the phone "You sound mad what happened?" His voice asked with a slightly concerned tone.
She grunted as she pulled to door to the side a little trying to line it up with the frame. "I haven't had he best morning. My neighbour tried to strangle me and now I need a new front door" She spat.
"Thee neighbour?" The male voice asked.
She rolled her eyes and shoved the door into the frame, she locked the door hoping the lock was strong enough to balance it momentarily so she could let go. "Yes it was a misunderstanding, doesn't matter now" She mumbled taking a step back and examining if the door would fall or not without her holding it.
A deep sigh came through the phone. "When are you going to make your move?" He asked impatiently.
She grabbed the phone in her hand and held it to her ear as she took a few steps away, eyes still fixed on her door. "It happens when it happens" she said sternly.
"Don't keep me waiting I am growing very impatient" The voice snapped. The line went dead before she could get another word in. She let out and angry cry and threw the phone down to the floor.
"Fucking men" She yelled, just as she shouted the door fell from the frame and smashed against the floor of her apartment, she pinched the bridge of her nose to stop her self screaming in fury. "Fuck my life" she whispered to herself. She shook her head and turned away from the messed up door she noticed a black cell phone on the floor, not hers. Her eyes widened as she came to the realisation of who it belonged too. "Oh, my lucky day" she exhaled as she bent down to pick up the phone. She looked at it for a few seconds before slipping it into her pocket, before she decided what she was going to do with it she needed to fix her door that meant a trip to the maintenance man on the bottom floor. She rolled her eyes at the thought of having to speak to him but it was either that or live life without a front door which meant next time her neighbour wanted to strangle her he wouldn't have to kick it in he could just walk in, she shuddered at the memory and grabbed her hoody shoving it back over her head.
I love writing this guys so please let me know if you want me to continue, thanks have a great day.
