Author Note: Hello fellow Avatar fans! I am a new fan (and I am watching Korra for the first time currently - I apologize in advance if I get canon wrong here and there since I have not seen that full series)! I fell in love with Aang and Katara, and my mind has been going crazy with different stories about their relationship after the war. Kataang for life!
This is the first one that came to mind - How Aang proposed to Katara. This will be a decently short story - but I'm excited to bring it to life!
I do not own anything from the Avatar universe, unfortunately.
Chapter 1: The Opportunity
"You can do this," Aang's thoughts were running wild. Today could be the biggest day of his life (maybe even more important than the day he defeated Ozai). "Katara loves you. Even if you make a fool of yourself, she will say yes."
Aang took a deep breath. The air was crisp and cold. He knew he would be arriving at the Southern Water Tribe any minute. He ran through his plan, or lack there of, one more time.
"Okay Appa," he started as he rubbed the Bison's head, "we are almost there. Remember, Katara has no idea I'm coming. I'm gonna have to keep you a little ways from the village so she doesn't see you. You're gonna have to stay hidden, buddy."
Appa let out a groan that Aang understood as an understanding of the situation.
"Once I find a place for you to stay, I'll need to find Hakoda and Sokka to help me out. Got any ideas on this, buddy?"
Aang sighed. He really didn't have a plan. He knew when Katara mentioned this big meeting at the tribe it would be the perfect opportunity for him to surprise her, but he didn't really think anything else through.
"Ugh," Aang sighed as he put a hand to his face, "I'm the avatar! Why didn't I plan this out ahead of time? Why am I so scared to propose?"
3 Weeks Prior - Ba Sing Se
"Aang, I'm telling you. It's just a meeting that my dad wants me and Sokka at. You don't have to be there."
Katara and Aang were standing outside their large house in the upper ring of Ba Sing Se. Usually, the house was a busy place full of multiple members of team Avatar. But since it was the best weather Ba Sing Se had experienced in months, Suki and Toph where out for a walk and Sokka was already down at the Southern Water Tribe. This made for some quiet time for Aang and Katara to talk about the next few months.
"But Katara," Aang interjected, "I should be there! It's my job."
Katara gave Aang a small smile and put her hands around his waste. "Aang, you may be the Avatar, but you can't do it all."
Aang took a deep breath to take in Katara's scent. It had been 3 years since they won the war and started their relationship - but he still got butterflies every time Katara got close to him.
"Aang," she was inches from his face and was speaking in a whisper, "Earth King Kuei needs you here. The affairs he's dealing with are far more problematic than what is happening at my village."
Aang sighed but kept eye contact with Katara. "I just don't like it when we are apart."
"I know Aang," Katara whispered back, now leaning her head on Aang's chest. "I don't either. But some times we have to split up. Everyone wants to have you around the moment there is a rift in their city. Some day - when we have kids.."
Katara lifted her head and trailed off after mentioning that. Aang noticed the pause and looked down at her face. "When we have kids, what?"
"Sorry," Katara smiled and placed her head back on his chest. "I got butterflies when I said that last bit."
Aang sighed and kissed the top of her head. "You got butterflies thinking about our future kids?"
A short chuckle escaped Katara's lips. "Yes. I got butterflies thinking about having kids with you. And having a life with you, spending the rest of my life with you - "
She was cut off as Aang brought her into a passionate kiss. A kiss, Aang thought, that was for the record books. Aang gently placed his hands on Katara's face and breathed in as they continued their passionate embrace. Katara rubbed her hands up and down Aang's back. The kiss seemed to last forever - but neither one seemed to want to let go.
"I love you, so much," Aang said as they separated for air, keeping his hands around Katara's cheeks.
She smiled. "I love you more."
They embraced once more, this kiss a little shorter but still just as sweet. "Katara.."
"Yes?"
"You're right." Aang backed off a little bit, but slid his arms around her waste. "As much as I hate it, I'll stay here, and you go. As long as it's only a few days."
"It will be short. I promise."
"It better. And why don't you take Appa?"
"No," Katara looked down. "At least, not the whole way. Why don't you drop me off at Whaletail Island. There is a small fleet of Water Tribe ships there right now and they want to take me home from there. And that way you have Appa in case of emergency."
"What kind of emergency?" Aang asked, curious.
Katara gave another smile. "Well, it's been a few weeks since we've heard from Zuko. I give it a 75% chance that he will need you for something while I'm gone."
Another chuckle, but this time from Aang. "It's a deal. I'll take you to Whaletail Island on Appa and then you can go down there with members of your tribe. How will I know when to come and get you?"
Katara smiled and leaned in for one more kiss before standing up to head inside. "Sokka has been dying to use Hawky again. We'll send him to you when we are finishing up."
"That's a good plan."
Alright guys, I had SO MUCH fun writing this! I love Katara and Aang so much. Please like and review, but keep it nice as always! I'll be back for chapter 2 soon!
