Chapter 9
Enter SHIELD
When Lucky was in a deep enough sleep Bucky managed to roll her off him carefully. she looked so much more peaceful now as she lead on the bed in a deep sleep. He pulled the blanket over her and got out of the bed. He threw on some clean clothes and quickly washed his face before marching out the door to find Sam, he hoped that she wouldn't wake while he was gone.
Sam surely enough was sat on a bench outside the hotel with a smile on his face, he almost looked as if he was waiting for Bucky to arrive. He grinned at his friend who looked as broody as ever. "Morning sunshine, I'm surprised to see you're still alive. Quite a character that friend of yours, I like her" Sam said with a toothy grin, Bucky didn't smile back at his friend, Bucky wasn't a morning person and Sam knew it.
"Did you manage to find anything out about her?" He asked, his voice still groggy from lack of sleep.
Sam shook his head. "Nothing so far, lots of people go missing and I don't have a name to go off, so it's not that easy" He said in a tone much chirpier than Bucky's. He saw the look of disappointment on Bucky's face and tried to reassure him with a smile. "I'll keep making calls man, are you okay?" He asked furrowing his brow slightly. Bucky was never a big one for smiling but this morning Sam noticed he was off, more so than usual.
Bucky bit his lip and had a thoughtful expression on his face, he crossed his arms and took a deep breath before speaking. "Last night she had a nightmare" He stated.
Sam smirked. "Another thing you two have in common" He joked.
Bucky shook his head. "No this was bad Sam, she couldn't wake up... she was awake but she wasn't it was horrible. She was crying in pain holding her leg telling me it was bleeding and that a man named Jones was dead. It was horrible" Bucky's expression looked horrified like he was seeing it all again in his mind. The way she clung to him and cried into his chest, when she screamed in pain at an imaginary injury, the whole thing was haunting.
Sam cocked his head at the strange story. "Anything else?" He asked trying to figure out what could be the problem with her.
Bucky sat down on the bench next to Sam. He turned to look at his friend who was staring at him already waiting for him to speak. "She said she is a Sergeant" Bucky told him. Sam couldn't hide the shocked look on his face at the news, he had a hard time picturing the small woman as a Sergeant.
"Impressive if it's true. She looks pretty young to be a sergeant" He said. Bucky pulled a little face but ignored it, things may of changed now, Sam would know how the army works now more so than Bucky.
Bucky sat quietly for a moment thinking about what else she said the night before. "Her leg doesn't have any sign of scarring, I checked once she fell back asleep" He mumbled.
Sam frowned. "So what you think she is just dreaming it up?" He asked.
Bucky shook his head. "That or the soldier serum isn't the only thing HYDRA are working on" He said in a low voice.
"What like some kind of healing serum?" Sam asked sounding more surprised than he should of.
Bucky shrugged. "It's possible right? I mean they make super soldiers so how hard could it be to come up with a healing solution?" He asked with a frown on his face.
Sam laughed lightly and shook his head. He had a motto, if you don't laugh you'll cry and this was one of those times. "This whole thing is crazy man. It's bigger than just us you know that right?" He asked looking back at Bucky. Bucky looked up at him with a wary look on his face, he knew Sam had done something and he hoped it wasn't what he thought. Sam sighed "I had to call it in man. You missed your therapy sessions and they contacted the office it was a whole thing" He explained. Bucky's shoulders sagged and he shot Sam an annoyed look.
"Seriously Sam and you couldn't come up with one excuse why I'd missed my session?" He asked, he was pissed off the last thing he wanted was SHIELD getting involved, Lucky had only just started to trust them. He knew this would break the trust completely, he also knew once they got back there he wouldn't be in control any more and that's not an idea he liked.
Sam put his hand in the air in front of him as if to defend himself. "Look man I know, but we're part of a team and they have resources and they will want to help get to the bottom of this whole HYDRA operation" Sam told him. Bucky sat in silence fuming about the situation, he knew Sam had a point but that didn't matter, he could only think now of how he was going to tell Lucky.
"And did you think about Lucky at all when you made that decision for us all?" He snapped at Sam not meaning to sound so vicious.
Sam frowned at the tone. "She will be fine man what's wrong with you?" He asked his voice going a little more high pitched.
Bucky ignored the last comment. "How do you know she will be fine?" He asked, Sam didn't speak, he was actually lost for words. Bucky had never been one for talking really and now they were arguing. "We don't know what she has done that she can't remember Sam. They could lock her up and throw away the key" Bucky added speaking quietly so no passers by could hear him.
Sam shook his head. "S'not gonna happen man. You worry to much" He told him.
Bucky gritted his teeth "Sam look how they treated me and I was brainwashed, she wasn't" He hissed quietly.
Sam paused for a moment and looked to the ground. "Then if she has done something that bad Buck maybe she shouldn't be protected" He told him in a serious voice, he looked back up to see Bucky staring daggers at him, but he'd expected that reaction.
Bucky stood up and began to walk away. "I'm going to check on her" He muttered not even bothering to turn back and look at Sam.
Sam rolled his eyes. "Jet gets here in two hours" He called to him. Bucky didn't respond annoying Sam a little more, he didn't understand at all how Bucky couldn't see the bigger picture here. "Look man I'm with you on this, I'm not the enemy" Sam shouted as Bucky got further away. Still no response.
When Bucky arrived back at the hotel room he still had a furious expression on his face, that melted away the second he opened the door and saw Lucky at up in the middle of the bed with the blanket draped around her tiny body. He slowly closed the door behind him and took a careful step forward, she looked up at him, her eyes where still a little puffy from the night before.
"Morning" Bucky said softly not really knowing what else to day, he didn't even know if she remembered what had happened the night before.
"Morning" She replied in a small tired voice. "Where were you?" She asked, her tone was weak and quiet Bucky couldn't help but feel bad at the sound of fear in her voice, he knew her remembering was beginning to take it's toll on her.
He walked over to the bed and perched on the end of it. "Just talking to Sam outside" He told her, she nodded and looked down at her hands that where clutching to the blanket so tight her knuckles where white. "Are you o-" Bucky began but was cut off.
"I'm fine" She said quickly before jumping out of the bed and walking towards the bathroom. She was embarrassed, she'd remembered everything from the night before, the dream and how she pathetically clung to a man she hated because she was to scared to be alone.
Before she reached the bathroom she felt a warm hand wrap around her wrist causing her to stop and turn. Bucky loomed over her, the only difference this time to all the other times he held her wrist like this was his eyes, his eyes where soft almost pleading with her before he even spoke. "Stop it, we're not doing this again" He told her softly. He released his grip on her and she clamped her her eyes shut tightly begging herself not to cry again. The lump grew in her throat when he spoke again. "It's okay" He told her softly. She didn't even know he was capable of speaking like this.
She kept her eyes closed but a tear slid though anyway and ran down her cheek. "Thank you" She whispered not daring to talk to much in case she began to cry. Bucky's warm human arm wrapped around her body and pulled her against his chest. His metal arm dangled at his side, he didn't think she would appreciate the cold. "I'm sorry" She whispered into his chest trying to fight back more tears.
Bucky held her a little tighter when he felt her small arms wrap around his waist. "Nothin' to be sorry for" He reassured her. "Remembering is the worst part sometimes" He added.
She didn't speak for a good 2 minutes, she just closed her eyes and buried her face into his now tear-stained T-shirt. She liked the smell of old spice on his skin, it made her feel warm. His arm wrapped around her made her feel safe but she still couldn't help but feel pathetic. "How do you cope Bucky?" She asked finally breaking the silence.
Bucky closed his eyes. The truth wouldn't reassure her much but he wasn't going to lie to her again. "It's hard but you just do, if you don't it will kill you" He told her quietly as he rested his chin on her head. She didn't reply she just clung to him. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to enjoy the moment off holding her. "I'm here every step of the way. Now go get a shower and we will get some food okay" He said loosing his arm from around her, she pulled away from him and nodded. She still looked sad and lost and it made his heart sink.
"Okay" She said in a small voice. She disappeared into the bathroom and locked the door. Bucky let out a deep sigh and ran his metal hand through his messy hair. His head was spinning he had no idea how he was going to tell her about SHIELD. He groaned and threw himself down on the bed, as he lead there listening to the sound of the running water from the next room he closed his eyes. He thought back to the evening before when Lucky told him he wasn't nothing to her, he was a friend, he smiled a little at the memory but it soon faded when he thought of her dream.
He sat up in the bed to stop himself falling asleep. He stared at a picture on the wall as he faded away into deep thought. He knew woman could join the army, okay back in his day it wasn't common but now it was, he just had a hard time picturing her as a soldier. The life of a soldier isn't a nice one and it is not one he would of thought being a good match for her. He knew he was being irrational and overprotective with no good reason to be, but he did not like the idea of her in the army at all.
After going over about 100 different scenarios of what could of happened to her when she was serving and caught during her time as a soldier the sound of the bathroom door opening grabbed his attention. Lucky emerged wearing a short blue dress from the collection he had bought for her a few days before. Her wavy shoulder length hair tucked behind her ears. She looked at him and forced a smile. "I need to talk to you about somethin' when your ready" He told her.
Her smile faded fast "What is it?" she asked immediately sounding worried. She walked over to where he was sat on the bed and stood in front of him "Bucky?" She asked still wearing the worried expression.
He rubbed his metal hand over his face and let out a deep sigh, he knew she was going to hate this. "Sam called the director told him about you, please don't worry Lucky they are only going to help you I promise" He said quickly noticing her worried expression quickly turning to a scared one.
She shook her head quickly " .no" She begged taking a step back from him, he stood up and held a hand out to try and stop her but she didn't take it. "I've done things Bucky, I can't remember what exactly but I know I have killed people. What if they where innocent?" She asked in a horrified voice. Bucky took another step closer to her now feeling comfortable that he could maybe comfort her. "They will lock me up and experiment on me, what if they-" She stopped talking and covered her mouth in an attempt to keep herself from sobbing.
Bucky grabbed her and pulled her into a tight hug this time with both arms. He could feel her shaking against his body as she buried her face in his shirt again, it only made him hold her tighter. He pressed his head against the top of hers "Lucky no one is experimenting on you and no one is going to lock you up. I promised I'd protect you and I keep my promises" He whispered against her hair. Slowly her breathing started to return to normal, he rocked her slowly from side to side until she was ready to let go.
"The director of the Avengers?" Her muffled voice asked into his shirt.
"SHIELD" He corrected her.
She pulled away slightly keeping her arms around him, she looked up at him with sad eyes. "Then what power do you have?" She asked. "If they decide they are locking me up there is nothing you can do Bucky" She told him.
"You're not getting locked up, you can help us with your memories. We will take HYDRA down and then you're free Lucky, to live what ever life you want where ever you want" He told her with a small smile.
She slowly pulled away from Bucky causing his hands to slide from her back. She looked at him with wide eyes and took a couple of steps back, Bucky cocked his head in confusion. "You can distract Sam... please I'll go out the back and run I just don't want anyone to keep me again" She whispered.
He quickly shook his head. "If you go I can't protect you and if I run with you we won't only be a target for HYDRA we will be a target for SHIELD too" He told her quickly shutting her plan down. There was no way he was going to let her out of his sight with HYDRA around waiting to kill her.
Lucky's eyes softened a little. "You'd run?" She asked in a quiet voice.
Bucky swallowed hard and nodded. He didn't mean to say it out loud but he knew deep down if she left he would go with her. "I said I'd protect you" He told her. She stood awkwardly in the room and nodded, she knew leaving would be a bad idea and to be honest she knew now she didn't want to leave Bucky, he made her feel safe. "Nothing is going to happen I won't let it neither will Sam. He only did this because he knows we could use the help" Bucky told her.
She stood thinking about it for a moment. "Will you always be around?" She asked almost sounding like a child. Bucky smiled and nodded at her, he knew he would be around even if they made it hard for him. "Okay" She finally whispered.
"Thank you for trusting me Lucky" Bucky said with a genuine smile on his face.
"Please don't make me regret it" She whispered.
They had eaten breakfast at a little café and walked around for a while waiting for the jet to arrive. Lucky hardly spoke but that didn't matter Sam was keeping the conversations flowing for everyone. Bucky's eyes where glued to the small woman by his side all morning, he was worried for her and he blamed himself for her being in this position. They ended up sitting in the park where Lucky and Bucky had ice-cream the day before but instead of laughing and joking this time Lucky sat in silence staring at the ground beneath her.
A loud sound suddenly came from nowhere, Lucky looked up and her eyes widened when she saw the SHIELD jet landing right there on the park in front of her. Sam was the first to get up off the ground. "You guys ready?" He asked looking back at the duo who where still sat on the floor.
Lucky stared at the jet with wide eyes. "I have never been on anything like that" She said out loud, her heart was beating hard against her chest, she hated flying that's something she learnt about her self on the original flight to Mexico she'd taken.
Sam laughed "If you where in the army you've flown on scarier things than that" He told her matter of factly.
Bucky stood up and brushed the dust of his pants, he glanced over at Sam "Give us a minute?" He asked quietly, Sam nodded understanding and turned to walk over to the jet waiting for them. Bucky turned back to Lucky who was still sat on the floor, he held out his vibranium hand to her and she took it, he effortlessly pulled her off the ground. "What is it?" He asked sensing something wasn't right.
She bit her lip "I'm scared Bucky I'm not an innocent person, before HYDRA my job was killing people in the army... I am not a good person" She blurted out with fear in her voice.
Bucky frowned wondering how she could see it that way. "You where serving your country, just like me and just like Sam" He told her, it didn't help she stood there awkwardly praying something would happen to her so she didn't have to get on that jet.
"I hate to rush you but we need to go" Sam shouted from the doorway of the jet. Bucky held his hand out again but she didn't take it, she crossed her arms and walked towards the jet, He sighed and dropped his arm and slowly walked behind her.
The journey wasn't going to take long of course SHIELDS jets where some of the fastest in the world and the smoothest in the sky. That didn't matter to Lucky, she sat quietly pale as a ghost until an overwhelming wave of nausea came over her. She quickly took of her seat belt and squeezed past Bucky's legs "Excuse me" She whispered as she scurried to the bathroom quickly locking the door behind her.
Sam laughed quietly and shook his head, he looked at the door and then over to Bucky who was wearing a worried look on his face. "A Sergeant scared of flying, well I'll be damned" Sam joked.
Bucky rolled his eyes. "Go easy Sam she's had a rough time" He mumbled defending her.
Sam sniggered. "Sorry didn't mean to insult your girlfriend" He joked childishly.
Bucky frowned at him "Grow up".
Sam laughed again and stood up from his seat. He walked over to where Bucky was sitting. He kicked Bucky's long legs off the chair opposite him that he'd been resting them on and sat down across from him. He smiled at his friend with his usual toothy grin. "I'm playing man what's wrong with you. You've been in a bad mood ever since I got here, you're not yourself what's wrong" He asked sounding genuinely concerned. It never stopped surprising Bucky when people actually asked him how he was. "You still having dreams?" Sam asked.
Bucky sighed and lent back in his seat. "It's not about me" He told him.
"Just because Lucky has problems doesn't mean you have to ignore your own. How do you expect you can help her when you can't even close your eyes at night without seeing his face?" Sam asked taking a more serious tone now. Bucky looked surprised, he didn't ever tell Sam what his dreams where about he only knew that he had them. "Don't look at me like that I know exactly who haunts you at night" Sam told him with a small smirk on his face.
"How?" Bucky asked with a perplexed look on his face.
Sam smiled at Bucky reaction before slowly loosing the smile "I was there, through it all. I saw you crushed at his funeral because you couldn't apologise for real. I know you didn't want to kill his parents and he did to, you gotta let it go Buck it will kill you" He said in a concerned tone. Sam did care about Bucky, he hated him at first but now he was like the broody, semi-stable white brother Sam never wanted but was happy he got.
"Like I did them" Bucky mumbled as the faces of Howard and Maria flashed into his mind.
Sam shook his head "Come on man" He muttered. "I'm tryna be real. You're my friend and I don't want to see you suffer. If I think you are putting her mental health before your own I will do something about it" He told him sternly.
Bucky frowned "Stay out of it Sam" He argued.
Sam smiled. "Can't do that" he said. Bucky didn't say anything instead he looked out the window next to him in an attempt to ignore his annoying friend. "Help yourself Bucky, you can still help her you just have to help yourself too" Sam continued.
"How?" Bucky asked as he stared at the blanket of white clouds outside the window.
"Go see your god damn therapist, she's called me like five times today already" Sam scolded, Bucky smirked and Sam laughed. A few moments later they could both hear Lucky coughing in the bathroom, Bucky looked at the door of the on board bathroom wondering if he should go check if she was okay. Sam smiled "Relax, she's a big girl Buck she can hold her own hair back" He said almost like he was reading Bucky's mind.
Bucky sighed and relaxed his tense shoulders a little, he looked away from the door and back to Sam. "You know Sam I don't mean to be rude, you have helped me a lot but when it comes to her you have no idea. You haven't dealt with HYDRA but we have. She needs me" Bucky snapped. Sam's smug expression didn't falter, Bucky might of scared a lot of people but Sam wasn't one of them.
"Or do you need her?" Sam asked with a smug smile still on his face. "I support you no matter what. I just care about what's going on in there" Sam said leaning forward and flicking Bucky on the forehead.
Bucky smiled and batted his hand away making Sam laugh. "Punk" Bucky muttered still trying his best to sound mad even though his small smile gave him away.
Sam's eyes widened and he put his hand on his chest "Excuse me old man?" He asked in an over exaggerated voice, this time Bucky laughed a little and shook his head. There was a short silence, Bucky couldn't hear her any more and he began to relax again. Sam cleared his throat and smirked at Bucky "So... I caught a glimpse of that erotic movie you guys where watching … the notebook, real X-rated stuff Buck. I bet you didn't know where to look when she took her stockings off" He said with a wink.
"Sam" Bucky dead panned.
Sam laughed like a giddy child "I'll take you to a strip club sometime, that will blow your mind" He said with a big grin.
Bucky closed his eyes and lent his head back on the head rest of his seat "Such a little punk" He muttered.
"Old man, probably have a heart attack at a strip club anyway" Sam muttered loud enough for Bucky to hear Bucky didn't look back at his friend but he did smile at the comment.
AVENGERS HQ
NEW YORK
After the jet landed the trio where lead up to Nick Fury's office. Lucky looked around at the massive building as she walked through. The walls where glass which struck her as odd considering the amount of threat the Avengers would sometimes be under, after thinking about it for a while she decided it must be bulletproof. Everything was clinically clean, the white and grey interior was sleek it was smart but it wasn't a warm place. They walked in silence, Bucky not leaving her side even once, he was walking so close her hand kept brushing against his metal limb, she didn't know if he noticed the blunder, if he did he didn't acknowledge it. Everyone came to a sudden stop, Lucky looked past the two men who'd been leading them. Nick Fury stood outside of his office waiting for them, he was dressed in his signature black leather jacket with the black eye patch to match. Lucky felt cold she'd never seen this man before but judging on his appearance she was already scared of him.
Sam and Bucky stepped forward and shook the mans hand, there was no smiling in their greetings. To Lucky it didn't seem like they where very close with one another "Director Fury this is Lucky" Sam finally spoke, Fury ignored him and looked straight at Bucky.
"And where the hell have you been" He asked in a loud voice.
Bucky wore a tough expression and seemed un-phased by the large man Lucky noticed. "On a mission" He answered with a slight attitude in his voice.
Fury kept his eyes on Bucky but pointed a finger at Lucky. "This your mission?" He asked in a stern voice, Bucky didn't respond. "Why didn't you call it in as soon as you found out she was HYDRA" He scolded. Lucky cringed when he said the word, she wished the ground would open up and swallow her at this point.
Bucky's jaw hardened but he knew he had to stay calm, after all he was talking to the boss. "She isn't HYDRA any more, they are after her and want her dead. I have been protecting her" He said slowly.
"Not your call to make solider" Fury stated.
"Bucky" He corrected in response hating the name Fury called him.
Fury took a step closer to Bucky. Bucky stood up straight confidently "Remember our deal" Fury said quietly.
Bucky stared him in the eye when he spoke "With all due respect Director I couldn't give a shit about the deal. Don't treat her like a criminal before you know her. She has agreed to help you should thank her for that". Sam looked down to the floor and cringed not liking where this was going, Fury didn't appreciate attitude, especially not from Bucky who was still on probation.
Fury smiled a little at the man in front of him. "You remember Natasha right?" He asked knowing the answer. For a split seconds Bucky expression seemed hurt at the memory of her, Lucky wondered who they where talking about. "A double-double agent" Fury said in a low tone. His eyes flicked to Lucky and back to Bucky."Proceed with caution Barnes" He said quietly before taking a step back. Bucky nodded understanding what he was talking about, but he knew different Lucky wasn't Natasha.
Fury clasped his hands together behind his back and walked over to Lucky. He towered over her in size and made her look like a rag doll, he looked her up and down. "Lucky we need to ask you some questions" He told.
She looked over at Bucky who gave her a nod and a tiny smile, she looked back to the man in front of her and nodded. "Okay" She whispered.
A woman appeared from seemingly nowhere and held out her arm. "This way" She said in a soft spoken voice. Lucky followed the taller brunette down the corridor looking back to Bucky with a worried expression.
Bucky turned to Fury "Where are you taking her?" He demanded.
Sam nudged him in the shoulder. "Calm down man" He whispered.
Fury turned to Bucky and threw him a harsh glare "Interrogation room and she doesn't need a K9 by her side, stand down" He ordered, Bucky gritted his teeth and didn't respond. Nick Fury walked away catching up to the woman. Once they where gone Sam smacked Bucky in the arm.
"Are you trying to get in trouble?" He whisper shouted.
Bucky pulled a face "What's he gonna do?" Bucky asked with a cocky attitude sounding more like his younger self.
"Oh I don't know lock you up for war crimes?" Sam whisper shouted harshly, referring to his crimes as the Winter Soldier, Bucky twisted his mouth in annoyance at Sam being right. If it wasn't for Nick Fury taking him and keeping an eye on him claiming he was an Avenger he would be in prison, the government still didn't trust him.
"Shut up" Bucky muttered not having any better come back.
The room was brightly lit with no windows, it was clearly an interrogation room she thought to herself. The tall woman sat beside wrapping some kind of strap to her arm that was connected to a laptop. Lucky began to panic, her breathing was quick and she felt herself sweating, it only got worse when Nick Fury walked into the room and sat directly opposite her. "So Lucky, I hear you are a Sergeant, served time god knows where, got in an accident somehow and then ended up working for HYDRA. That's quite the resume" He began.
She swallowed the lump in her throat and looked up at him. "Then you know as much as I do" She responded trying her best to look calm. The woman tapped on the laptop beside her, Lucky was tempted to peek but she kept her eye on the man in front of her "What are you going to do to me?" She asked.
Nick placed his hands on the table in front of him. "If you cooperate, nothing. We will keep you on a similar program to Barnes, keep an eye on you. If we deem you to be stable enough to let you enter back into society we will" He told her honestly, she frowned she didn't realise that about Bucky that they kept an eye on him.
"So I am a prisoner" She stated.
Nick smiled. "More like reality TV. Someone's always watching, you only become a problem if we can't see you" He told her.
She was still frowning "Sounds like I am a prisoner" She said again. Fury looked over to the taller woman and she nodded at him, Lucky didn't understand what was going on and began to feel panicked again. "I want to see Bucky" she blurted without thinking.
Fury scoffed "You're guard dog is busy. Plus it isn't him we want to speak to it is you" He told her firmly.
She shook her head. "I won't talk unless he is here" she retorted trying to gain some power over the situation.
"Why do you need him?" Fury asked as he sat back in his chair and crossed his arms. "Sam mentioned something about a man named Tom Decker. We read about him, he is a real piece of work used to work for MI6 and went rogue. No one has seen or heard of him until you mentioned his name" Fury stated. Lucky felt a shiver go up her spine when he mentioned the name. "Is this him?" He asked, just as he spoke the woman placed a photograph on the table and slid it over to her.
Her eyes flicked down to the photo, her heart banged against her chest when she saw Tom's face. She closed her eyes and pushed the photo away from her. "I want to speak to Bucky please" She said again only this time the fear was evident in her voice, she was almost begging.
"Is that Thomas lee Decker?" Fury pressed ignoring all the signs of her being upset.
She nodded "Yes" She whispered. Tears began to form in her eyes and her throat was almost hurting from holding the lump back.
"And he is the HYDRA leader?" He asked again unbothered by her tears. She nodded as tears rolled down her cheeks. "Tell me more about him" He pressed.
She shrugged "I don't know" She said in a shaky voice.
"You're lying" He accused.
"Sir" The tall woman spoke, Fury held his hand up to her.
"Hold on. Lucky, look at him. He tortured you, twisted you and bent you to his will. He broke you, look at you" Fury said as he lent forward and pushed the photo back in front of her, she twisted her neck to look away. "He did this to you and now look at you, crying out for a man you barely know because you're so weak you can't get by on your own. I thought you where a Sergeant" Fury mocked.
She clenched her teeth together and looked at him. "I am a Sergeant!" She yelled as more hot tears ran down her cold cheeks.
Fury suppressed a smile knowing he was getting to her. "Then tell me your real name Sergeant" He ordered.
She closed her eyes and hid her face in her hands. "I – I don't remember" She cried through her hands.
"Try harder" He ordered.
"Sir" The tall woman warned again, Fury ignored her.
"Look at me" He ordered. Lucky dropped her shaky hands from her face "Do you want to go back to HYDRA?" He asked causing her eyes to widen. "Can I trust you?" He added.
She shook her head furiously "I don't want to go back please" she begged.
Fury tapped the photograph lead on the table she'd been trying to hard not to look at "What about him. Do you stand with him?" Fury asked in a voice that sounded like he was accusing her of something.
"I- I don't want to fight any more. I don't want to go back" She begged again.
"We need you solider and we need to know we can trust you. You need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and try harder to remember, we have people that are going to help you with that. Starting tomorrow" He told her hardly as he got up from the table.
She nodded and wiped the tears of her cheeks. "Okay" she whispered. "Can I see Bucky now?" She asked looking up at him. Fury shook his head at the weak woman in front of him and left the room without saying another word. The door slamming behind him made Lucky jump.
Feeling defeated she closed her eyes and put her head on the table and began to sob quietly. The tall woman next to her watched with sympathetic eyes and she took the strap off her arm. "Don't worry his bark is worse than his bite" She said softly.
"I'm not lying when I say I want to help I'm just so god damn scared" She sobbed into the table. She felt a hand on her back slowly rubbing up and down, the contact soothed her slightly.
"You are safe here no one wants to hurt you. He... He is just is stressed that's all. A lot has gone on around here recently I'm sure you remember the blip and we lost people. Morals been low and he doesn't want anything else to go wrong" The woman told her.
Lucky sat up slowly rubbing the tears from her eyes. "What blip?" She asked.
The woman nodded to herself. "Right your memory. A story for another day" She told her as she closed her laptop. She stood up from the table and gathered her things shoving them all into a bag. "Excuse me" She said softly offering a smile before she made her way to the door leaving Lucky alone in the interrogation room.
"Why are you still here?" Fury asked in an annoyed tone as he arrived back at his office to see Bucky sat with his feet up on a table out side of it and Sam sat beside him reading a magazine on weapons. Bucky looked up at him and furrowed his brow.
"You know why, is she okay?" He asked as he stood up.
Fury lent against his office door. "She broke down, I don't think she was faking it either" He said.
Bucky suddenly felt concerned "Is she okay?" He asked in a worried voice, Sam looked up from his magazine at Bucky and smiled before looking back down and carrying on reading.
The woman came running down the hall with a black bag clutched to her chest and a smile on her face. "It worked sir, she is very upset and the heart monitors readings say it's real, she almost worked her way into a panic attack" She told Fury who stood smiling proudly.
Bucky looked mortified, they had been playing mind games with her. Fury looked at him and pointed "Before you say anything you might regret Barnes, remember what we did for you. It's called being cruel to be kind. We know we can trust her, that's a start" He told him. Bucky managed to calm down knowing what they did was a usual tactic and he should of known. He was happy that Fury was going to help her and not lock her away, maybe Sam was right and this was the right thing to do.
Bucky nodded at the man "Thank you sir" He said quietly.
"She starts her sessions with Wanda tomorrow. I suggest we all get some rest, if we get answers and a location tomorrow we will strike while the iron is hot. Take these sons of bitches down once and for all" Fury said looking around at all three of the people in his company. Sam nodded and threw the magazine back down on the table and stood up next to Bucky.
"Where's Lucky staying tonight?" Bucky asked.
Fury looked him up and down. He knew from Bucky's reaction that he was worried about her but he couldn't work out why. In the time he had come to know Bucky Barnes this seemed out of character. "In one of our rooms, we want to monitor her sleeping. Just for tonight, see if anything odd occurs" He told him.
Bucky looked at Sam. "She won't like it" He said quietly.
"Neither did you, it's protocol" Fury reminded.
Sam put his hand on Bucky back "Come on man you'll see her in the morning" He told him patting his back to reassure him.
"I'll stay" he mumbled.
Sam smiled at Fury and the woman. "Excuse us for a moment" He said with a smile as he pulled Bucky away. Bucky allowed Sam to drag him around the corner "What's that going to do for anyone?" Sam whisper shouted hitting Bucky on the arm again.
Bucky shot him a warning look for hitting him "If I stay I can keep an eye on her" Bucky whisper shouted back.
Sam rolled his eyes in an over exaggerated fashion. "There are about twenty people here who's job that actually is" He argued.
Bucky shook his head. "I can't leave I just can't" He stressed.
"I get it man, you where here too same position but... I think it will do you more harm than good" Sam told him.
Bucky just shrugged. "I'm staying" He stated.
Sam pulled a face and shook his head at his irrational idiot friend. "You got it bad" He mocked, Bucky smacked him on his arm knocking his balance. Sam threw his arms out in front of him knowing Bucky was much stronger "Fine" He whisper shouted. Bucky smiled at the victory "Alright. I'll see you in the morning man. Call me if you need me okay" Sam said in a defeated tone.
He patted Bucky on the shoulder and began to walk off down the long hall "See ya tomorrow... and thanks Sam, you're a good friend" Bucky called after him, Sam didn't look back but he threw up a peace sign above his head.
Hate... she fucking hated it. She sat on the single bed provided for her and stared at the blank white wall in front of her, it was a cell. Sure they said it was only for one night but the confined space was enough to give her a panic attack on it's own. The obvious cameras on the wall only added to the anxiety.
She'd calmed down a lot and was no longer crying, she lead down in the bed and curled up on her side. She'd changed out of the dress Bucky had bought for her and was now wearing black sweat pants and a long sleeved white shirt that hung loose on her tiny frame. She grabbed the thin blanket and pulled it over her shivering body, she didn't want to go to sleep, she didn't want another nightmare but if she stayed awake all night she knew they would keep her in here the next day as well.
After silently arguing with her self she closed her eyes and buried her face in her pillow hoping she'd drift of quickly. She couldn't help but wish Bucky was here, she remembered his warm body wrapped around hers the night before and how safe she felt. That's all she wanted, for him to come and make her feel safe again.
Bucky rubbed his stubble covered chin and glanced up at the clock on the wall. It was four in the morning, he glanced over to the screen and saw she was still curled up in bed and hadn't moved, hopefully she would stay like that all night.
Fury was leant back in his chair doodling on a piece of paper, he looked up and watched as the agitated man stared at the screen and tapped his metal fingers anxiously against his lap. He grabbed the piece of paper he'd been writing on and scrunched it up in a ball and threw it at the back of Bucky's head to get his attention. "What's your deal?" He asked casually.
Bucky frowned. "Don't have one" He mumbled.
Fury smiled and nodded with a sarcastic look on his face. "Right. You like the girl or something?" He asked. His tone was less official Bucky guessed it was because he was technically off the clock, or maybe just because it was the two of them alone in a room.
Bucky took a deep breath and turned his chair to face Fury. "She reminds me of me" He said.
Fury smiled. "So you like the girl" He teased.
Bucky was exhausted he wasn't in the mood for jokes. "I just don't think she needs to suffer any more than she already has. I get why we are doing this but it still doesn't feel right" He said looking back at the monitor.
"Man, she will come out of this a stronger person just watch" Fury said pointing at the screen.
Bucky cocked his head. "What makes you think so?" He asked.
Fury shrugged. "You did" He answered shocking Bucky slightly, Bucky was under the impression Fury disliked him and the only reason he was here was because of Steve. "You still got a long way to go but your stable now, baby steps, Rome wasn't built in one day" Fury added.
"I guess" Bucky mumbled.
Fury reached into the top drawer of his desk pulling out a black phone "Here" he said holding it out in front of him. Bucky lent forward and grabbed it. He looked up a Fury with a confused expression, how did her know everything Bucky wondered. "I heard your other was … compromised" Fury trailed of with a smirk.
"She-" Bucky began but Fury cut him off.
"No need to explain to me... bitches be crazy" He joked, Bucky laughed and slipped the new un-bugged phone into his jacket pocket.
"I'm going to get some coffee, you want one?" He asked as he got up from his chair looking back at the monitor one last time.
"Does a cow moo?" Fury asked in a sarcastic tone, Bucky smiled and shook his head, of course.
