Sasuke's wife Naruko has a dark secret, and she doesn't plan on telling her husband. But what if he's neighbors find out first? And what will happen if he finds out the truth?
My wife's secret
His wife's background had always been a mystery, she never spoke about her family and he respected her for that. Even though he accepted his wife's decision on not revealing her family background, there were times that he was still curious.
His wife was beautiful, she had long golden hair that rivaled the sun, eyes as blue as the vast ocean. A smile that gave him warmth and a beautiful voice that soothed him. But his wife was rather odd, she would always lock herself in the bathroom and there were times that she'd sneak out of their house during a full moon.
She never liked keeping fish and other marine animals as pets, she'd always set them free to the ocean. There was a time when he took her to an aquatic zoo, the large whales and dolphins kept staring at her through the aquarium. It was as if she was speaking telepathically with them. His wife's odd behavior always stuck in his mind, but he still loved her despite her peculiarity.
But he had other problems in his life which were much bigger than his wife's odd behavior. His parents still had a hard time accepting his lovely wife, and they always pestered him into divorcing her and marry another girl. But he ignored them and remained loyal to his wife. He was overjoyed when his wife revealed that she was with child, the couple became happier when their doctor revealed that they'll be having twins.
During his wife's pregnancy his parents stopped pestering him, and let him live on his peaceful life. Even after she gave birth, their peaceful life continued on. It wasn't until their sons were five months old, their neighbors started to spread a rumor about his wife.
Whenever the couple were out on a walk with their twin sons, the neighbors would whisper at each other as they looked at them. He noticed the way the neighbors stared at his wife, it was as she was some sort of monster. But he quickly disclosed it since he had no idea about the rumors around the neighborhood.
One afternoon his parents came to visit them which was rare, given the fact that they never liked his wife. The tension between them disperse when his wife began to sing, there were no lyrics to her song but the melody sounded so serene and heavenly.
Every time he hears his wife sing, he had always felt as if he was in the deep sea, he wasn't drowning nor swimming just floating but not on the surface but under the deep-sea bed.
His mother's eyes begin to form tears as she hears her sing, even his father who had always been a reserve man. A man who doesn't like to show his emotions, began to she tears as he listened intently to her. He was surprised at his wife's talent; she could turn the most cold-hearted person's heart shatter with just her voice.
During his morning jogs he would always see this woman with pink hair. He wasn't stupid and it was fairly obvious that the woman named Sakura was making advances towards him. But he shrugged it off and continued on his daily routine. But there was a certain morning when Sakura acted differently, she didn't give him that seductive look or enticing actions. She approached him directly. He stopped by his tracks to have a few sips of water when the woman stopped at his side. He pretended that he didn't see her, but that didn't stop her.
"You know I've been hearing weird rumors about your wife lately." She said casually.
This was one of the troubles of having a beautiful wife staying at home. Most people would assume that she was having an affair. This was what he was thinking.
"Whatever you heard from those gossiping housewives keep it to yourself." His voice was rather cold and angry.
"They say she's some sort of unknown creature, and they feel sorry for you for falling into her trap." She remarked snarly at him.
"How dare you say those horrid things to my wife!" He turned to her and gave her a death chilling stare.
This made Sakura took a step back and realized that she had crossed the line. Sakura continued her jog and Sasuke just stood there as he tried to calm himself. He was already too angry at how his neighbors were looking at his wife.
Sasuke returned home and saw his wife at the nursery room. She was cradling one of their sons in her arms while the other was sleeping in the crib. She was humming a lullaby to them, though this wasn't the type of lullaby that he usually heard.
He entered the nursery and wrapped his arms around her waist, this had surprised her. Though he smelled of sweat and his body was sticky, the blonde woman didn't care. She knew that something was troubling her dear husband, he had always become clingy whenever he was having troubles.
"What's wrong?" she asked softly.
He didn't respond instead he kissed her head and nuzzled on her neck.
"Is it about the neighbors?" She asked.
"Those gossiping housewives should learn how to keep their mouths shut. Why can't they just mind their own business?" he replied.
His wife kept silent for a moment which made him more worried about her. He then released his embraced and placed his hand on her face. He made her face him and he gave him a peck on the lips. His wife sighed and leaned on his chest; his long fingers tangled through her golden locks.
Their daily lives continued on; he ignored his neighbors especially Sakura who still kept giving him indications. On one Friday night Sasuke woke up in the middle of the night, he found his bed empty. He got up lazily and went to the nursery room, his wife wasn't there which was odd. Since he knew that she could be there, maybe she went to the kitchen to drink some water he thought. His mind got interrupted when he heard his wife singing, it wasn't coming from the kitchen but from the bathroom. He went back to the bathroom; it was common knowledge for him that his wife would always lock their bathroom door.
Not once had he shared a bath with her, which was rather strange since they were married.
"They say she's some sort of unknown creature, and they feel sorry for you for falling into her trap."
Sakura's words rang inside his mind, but he wasn't the type to believe in superstitions nor urban legends. But the woman's words sunk into his thoughts, he kneeled down on the floor and slowly peeked into the keyhole. His eyes widened and he gasped at the sight. The hole was too small but he could clearly see what was inside.
He saw his wife's hands hanging on the side of the tub, they were long and it had webbed objects which resembled a frog's hands. Her ears also had grayish fins on the sides, but the worst thing that made him go into shock was her lower torso. She had no legs all she had was a large scaly gray fish tail which was perched up on the tub.
"They say she's some sort of unknown creature, and they feel sorry for you for falling into her trap."
Sakura's words came into his thoughts again, but he wished this was just a dream or a hallucination. But it felt real and everything started to come together. His wife's odd behavior, her mysterious background and her secretive nature. It started to make him wonder if she only enticed him due to her magic which was her voice.
He quickly got up and banged the door, he heard the water splashed from the inside. He could tell that his wife was shocked at what he did, luckily, she didn't lock the door properly and with another kick the door was flung open.
Onyx and cerulean eyes met, his wife looked at him with terrified eyes and he looked at her with shocked and confused eyes. As he finally had a clear view on his wife, the tail, her hands and ears they all look realistic. He stared in horror at what he saw, his body stiffened and he began to hyperventilate.
His wife began to sob as she saw the look on his eyes. She felt ashamed on herself, her husband who adorned her was disgusted at her. He felt his body grow weaker and his mind hazy, he slowly slumped on the wall as he tried to catch his breathe.
"This isn't real, this isn't real." Sasuke murmured to himself.
He kept muttering those words, praying that he would wake up from this horrible nightmare.
His wife couldn't bare to see him in that state of shock, shrieked loudly. Her shrieks shattered the windows of their houses and nearby cars. It even made Sasuke lose consciousness, and the rest of the neighborhood.
The next morning Sasuke woke up, he felt the cold and hard surface of the bathroom floor. He opened his eyes to see that there were shards of broken glass from the bathroom mirror and windows. He knew that what happened last night wasn't a dream. He stood up and saw large gray scales on the bath tub and floor.
He realized that she must have run off, his twin sons came into his mind. He sprinted to the nursery room and saw that his sons were still sleeping peacefully. But the windows in their room were also broken. He searched the entire house and found no sign of his lovely wife nor did he find a clue on where she ran off to.
He finally discovered his wife's secret; she wasn't human and his neighbors knew before him. He knew that his children weren't safe in that neighborhood, he had to take them somewhere else.
He contacted his brother and for three months him and his children stayed at his home. His parents tried to force him to talk about what happened but he knew that they wouldn't believe him. He just simply told them that his family got attacked when he wasn't home. His wife was murdered but luckily, she hid their sons into safety. This was the story that he told, his parents and brother still think that there was more to the story but they gave up on prying more information from him since it gave him a hard time.
Over a year has passed and he kept wondering where his wife might be. He remembered her terrified eyes that night, she must have been ashamed that she didn't want to see him anymore. He didn't hate her for hiding who she was, but he hated himself for displaying a disgusted look on her when he saw her true form.
He yearned for her and he missed how she used to sing him to sleep. He wanted to find her but the ocean was too vast, he had too dived into deep to find her. His parents set him up on a blind date with a girl named Karin. The girl became infatuated with him but he showed no interest towards her. He kept his focus on his twin sons and the search for his ex-wife.
Karin kept dropping by on his office pestering him to go on a date with her but he kept telling her off. When Sasuke was coming home from his business trip when his maids suddenly called him. One of the maids saw a female figure snuck into the boy's room last night, but when she rushed through the room the figure disappeared. The next day, when the maids went to fix boys beds, they saw large gray scales on the bedsheets and on the floor. They described the scales as larges as they fit on the palm of your hand, and that it had this wet fish scent.
Sasuke remembered the morning when he woke up from the last night, he saw his wife. It was the same thing that he found when he woke up. There was only one person and he wished that it was her. He wanted to see her so badly that he wasted no time on getting home.
When he got home, he quickly asked the maids about the scales, they handed him a basket on which they placed the scales they picked up from the boy's room. He asked them if they got it a camera footage from last night. They told him that there was an error and they were still fixing it. He got frustrated since he didn't like to waste time on finding her. During that night when the boys went to bed, he sat in his study wallowing on his pain as he sipped a glass of whiskey.
He waited for her to arrive but he fell into deep slumber. The next day he heard his maids complaining about the mess in his son's room. They found scales again in the bedsheet and the room began to smell like a fish market. It wasn't a prank since he knew that his sons were not old enough to do them.
The maids told him that they remembered to shut the window last night, since one of the boys easily catches a fever and cold. But when they went inside the room this morning it was wide open. Sasuke couldn't rely on the cameras since they were still under maintenance.
The days passed by and this occurrence kept happening, the routine of cleaning the boys bed became repetitive with the maids that some of them started to suspect that Sasuke married a fish folk. One of them started to become afraid and asked Sasuke to dismiss her from her job. He had to change the cameras several times in order to catch the culprit behind this. But they would always get damaged and had to be fixed or replaced again.
When he could no longer rely on the cameras, he decided to purchase some dogs to guard the house but that also failed since they would always find them the next morning sleeping peacefully.
When his sons turned four, he noticed that they also began to show peculiar behaviors. One time when his parents came to visit them, they brought in a file that consisted the information of his potential bride. One of his sons told his mother that Sasuke must not marry since their mother was still alive.
This made his parents chuckle a bit, they thought that their son made up an excuse to make them believe that their mother had not passed away. But the younger twin told them that their mother would always visit them late at night when all of the people in the house were asleep.
This made his parents worry about their son's children, Sasuke suspected something too and he was determined to find out. Before the boys went to bed, Sasuke entered their room.
He began to casually start a conversation about their mother, his older twin son told him that she comes at night and sings them songs and tell stories about the ocean. The younger one told him that their mother would always go to his room or study before she would leave at dawn.
He questioned why his wife didn't show herself for years, and he started to blame himself for all that happened.
_Epilouge_
"I've been hearing some weird stories about why a lot of people never bought this house." A raven-haired boy asked the realtor.
"You mean about the guy who had a mermaid wife?" the realtor scoffed at her client.
This wasn't the first time that she encountered a client who heard about the stranger rumor in the neighborhood. Moegi had sold several houses and condo units but this was the only house that she couldn't sell since most clients back out the last minute they hear about the story. Even her predecessor who previously tried to sell the house encountered the same situations.
The people in the neighborhood believed that the wife killed herself after her husband saw her true form. Moegi didn't believe in such stories and dismissed it as an exaggerated superstition. She wondered if she could ditch this house to her co worker Konohamaru. She was already sick and tired of trying to sell this house only to be rejected because of some story created by bored house wives.
"I'll give you a call once I have decided." The man told her as he entered his car.
"Okay, sir. Thank you and have a nice day." She faked a smile which was mandatory in her profession.
She dialed her phone to call her friends Konohamaru and Udon, she wanted to ask if they were up for drinks this night. Luckily Udon picked up her call.
"So, is he going to take it?" her friend asked.
"He said he'd give me a call once he made up his mind." She told him sarcastically.
"Sure." He chuckled.
Most of their co workers knew about the urban legend about the house and they made a bet on when it will be sold.
Moegi ended her call when he noticed a young blonde woman standing in front of the house. The woman was looking at the house and Moegi wondered if she was interested in it.
"Um, Hi." She greeted the woman who responded with a smile.
"What's the story behind this house?" the blonde woman asked her.
"Ugh, just some weird story about a man who married a mermaid. They said she killed herself after her husband found out others say her husband choked her to death. I don't know every version varies." She explained to her.
"Is that so?" the unnamed woman said.
"Hmm." Moegi nodded her head in response.
"Do you believe in those stories?" the woman asked her.
"Of course not, because first of all mermaids and fish people never existed. I think it was just some creepy pasta written by some horror fan teen." She crossed her arms and huffed.
The woman just giggled at her and Moegi chuckled at her. The woman then bade goodbye to Moegi and they both went their separate ways. As Moegi was walking at the neighbor, she was approached by a woman with pink hair. The woman was older than Moegi, and Moegi knew who this was. This was one of the people who believed in the story about the house. Which Moegi found rather ridiculous.
"That woman that you just spoke to?" Sakura asked in an agitated tone.
"Yeah, what about her?" Moegi asked.
"My gosh, she hasn't age. Mermaids really do remain youthful." The pink-haired woman gasps.
This made Moegi laughed at her, and Sakura looked at her with angry eyes.
"That's a good one." She snorted out.
"Moegi, I was there when she used to live at that house with her husband. My mother saw her and so did Ino. I'm not making this up, that woman isn't human." Sakura glared at her.
"Whatever, you say." Moegi chukled.
Moegi spotted a cab passing by and hailed it. Sakura kept scolding her for not believing her story. She had always found her hilarious and sometimes wonder if her husband never sent her for a phycological check-up.
Moegi stared back at the angry Sakura and snickered at her.
Man, Sakura really does believe in weird shit. She thought as the cab drove away from the neighborhood.
THE END.
