Chapter 10

Inuyasha lay in his bed staring at the ceiling thinking over what happened at dinner. "I can't even function at a dinner with friends anymore." He said aloud to himself, he closed his eyes and for the first time it was not the haunting images of Kyo's face but that of Kisa's and Kagome's. The look they both had was filled with concern and also fear.

The rest of the night he spent tearing himself apart for what he has become, not even getting an ounce of sleep.

The next few days he stayed inside his house in the dark, he hadn't eaten since the night at Kagome's, the consumption was that of only alcohol. His cell phone in which he had ignored was now dead. He couldn't stand to take on all the calls and text messages.

It was 4 in the afternoon on the third day when there was a loud knock on his front door, he groaned and walked from the where he lay on the couch to answer the obnoxious noise that was making his head pound harder than usual from drinking.

"What is it?" He said as he swung the door open and revealed his best friend Miroku. Miroku stared at him for a good minute before speaking, "Oh good you're alive, Sango will be glad to hear that. Of course that is only because she is very angry with you." He said walking past him into the dark living room. "Hmmm maybe lights and no dark out curtains would be a good start to joining the living again." He said as he pulled the curtain aside making Inuyasha groan.

"Miroku what do you want?" Miroku sat down on the couch and looked back at his friend, "I want to talk with you. I haven't seen you much since you came home. Is wanting to see a friend a bad thing?" He asked with a cheesy grin, Inuyasha rolled his eyes and sat down next to Miroku and went to grab for the vodka on the table, Miroku grabbed his hand before he could. "As much as I enjoy a good drink." He said then paused and looked around the room at all the discarded alcohol bottles. "This is a bit much, don't you think?" He said as he reached and grabbed the bottle off the table. "Maybe let your head clear a bit?" Inuyasha met his gaze and slightly glared then his look softened and he signed rubbing his temples.

"I am drinking so I do have a clear head Miroku. Otherwise all it is in images of what I have done." He said leaning back on the couch, "Hmmm. Yes well the situation at Kagome's the other night is done and over with now. No need to dwell on that." Inuyasha looked over at him, slightly relieved that he thought that was all he was talking about. But underneath he was racking his brain about the man that he had become in the last 5 years.

"You didn't see their faces." He said in a low voice, "Kagome has been angry with me so many times, I have seen some pretty bad faces from her. But this is fear, and worry on another level. And Kisa; those big sad eyes, I can't believe she saw that." Miroku was quiet for a moment and then got up from the couch and sighed, he walked into the kitchen still not saying a word, found a trash bag and began cleaning up bottles.

"Kisa is just like her mom, she will always see the best in someone. Maybe it wasn't the best thing that she saw that but as adults we can't shield children from everything we do or say." Inuyasha let out a sigh and leaned all the way back on the couch so he was staring at the ceiling. "I am sure Kagome is furious about it though. What I did is not who I am. Well who I was." He had his eyed closed in frustration, Miroku came over and sat down next to him, "Inuyasha I don't know what you went though, and I know you are not the same person. But you need to know that you are back with your family again. We are here for you." Inuyasha just looked straight forward and was silent, still not saying anything. "When you need us. We are here." Inuyasha finally looked over to him and nodded.

Miroku helped him clean up and then took him out to go get some dinner at the small café in town that they all used to eat at. "Sango wanted to have you come over for dinner sometime this week. The kids will be over with Rin on Sunday, if you want to come over then?" Inuyasha took a drink of his water and nodded, "Yeah I guess that will be okay. I need some real food." Miroku gave a laugh, when the waitress came over he picked up the tab no matter how much Inuyasha fought. "Please Inuyasha you paid for me for literally our whole childhood, I can pick up a check at the café." Inuyasha scoffed, "Keh whatever."

"Kagome you are needed in emergency they are having a lot come in right now." Said a nurse at the triage as Kagome was putting her last clinic file on the rack. She gave a sigh and nodded, she was supposed to leave an hour ago, and she pulled out her phone as she was headed to the elevator. While she waiting to get to the 4th floor where emergency was at she texted Sango.

Kagome: Hey San, can you do me a huge favor?

Sango: Sure thing! What's up?

Kagome: (eye roll emoji) I have to help in the emergency room! Kiki is going baby shopping with Rin. Can you take Kisa for a while until I'm off?
SORRY it's last min!

Sango: Oh no biggie I was actually just leaving the store, I can grab her on the way back. I'll call Kiki now and let her know! Take your time at work, she is fine with me! I'll ttyl luv ya! 3

Kagome: Thnx! Luv ya too!

Kagome stepped off the elevator as the doors open and as soon as she did some guy walked right into her, he wasn't paying attention at all. "Excuse me!" She said slightly irritated, he looked up from his chart and stared wide eyed.

"I'm sorry! I wasn't watching." He said and looked her up and down and smiled, "Although I should have been." He said with a hint of allure in his voice. Kagome looked at him with an annoyed look, "Right. Okay I got to." She said as she hurried past him.

Kagome finally walked up to the emergency triage and went to go grab the first file in the stack when the doors flew open with the paramedics pushing a gurney. Kagome immediately let go of the folder and ran over as they wheeled the gurney to the first open curtain. "What happened?" She asked grabbing her stethoscope and started accessing the battered man. The paramedic across from her was the first to speak, "He was in an accident downtown. T-Bone, he was the driver in the car and his side got hit. He was conscious in the ambulance, but the ride over he passed out from loss of blood. Blunt impact to the left abdomen from impact." Kagome lifted his eyes lids and shined light in them his pupils didn't dilate.

"Was is just him in the car? Any passengers." She asked opening his shirt to access his abdomen, a large piece of glass stuck out of his left side, the nurse hooking his up to all the monitors gasped. Kagome turned to her quickly, "If this is too much for you leave, get me a nurse in here who can stomach this." The nurse flushed and just stood there, as she stared at her the monitor went off and he flat lined.

"I need some help in here!" she called running over to the counter to grab the defibrillator, seconds later another doctor came rushing in with nurses behind him. "Charge" The nurse set the defibrillator, Kagome nodded, "Clear" The shock ran through the man's body jolting it. Just then a frantic woman come running in, "Oh my god! Is he okay? What is going on!" "Get her out of here!" Kagome yelled, "Charge… Clear" Another jolt, she paused and looked at the monitor at the flat line. "Call it Higurashi." Said the other doctor, Kagome stared at the monitor, and said. "Charge." "Kagome it think it's over." Kagome turned toward to nurse, "Charge" She nodded, "Clear" The last jolt sent the monitor to beep again, Kagome let out a relieved sigh.

"I need this man stable, and this room sterile. I need my sutures and everyone out." Everyone started to move, Kagome pointed to the two nurses in the corner, "No you two stay, I'm gonna need a hand." They nodded.

A nurse from the triage came in as Kagome was putting on her gloves, "Dr. Higurashi, the wife wants to know what's going on." "Tell her we are stitching him up and getting him over for tests. I need an x-ray and an MRI to check for underlying factors." She nodded and left the room.

After Kagome had removed the glass and closed the wound she had the patient sent out for testing once he was stable. She was over looking through the file when a woman with short brown hair came up to her and tapped her on the shoulder. "Dr. Higurashi?" Kagome turned towards her, "Yes?" "Is my husband going to be okay?" Kagome looked at her and gave her a reassuring look, "He was stable and everything was normal when he went over to x-ray. I just want to make sure there is nothing broken and then the MRI to make sure we rule out internal bleeding. He is lucky for that type of accident." The woman wiped away some silent tears, "I told him not to go out when we fought! I always tell him to not drive angry! I said such mean things to him. I try to understand he struggled with PTSD but it is so hard!" She was now crying and leaning on Kagome, Kagome was shocked a bit a first and then rubbed the woman's back. "When he wakes up you and him will make up and you can tell him that. He will understand." The woman pulled away and nodded. "Thank you."

A few hours later, Kagome was getting ready to leave but her patient from earlier was finally awake she went to poke her head into recovery to see how he was doing. She knocked on the door and walked in, the woman who she spoke with earlier smiled and looked to the man in bed. The man just stared at Kagome with an expression of wonder.

"Kagome?" She stopped walking and looked at him questioningly. "Kagome Higurashi? " He then said, Kagome continued to walk over and smiled, "Yes I am Dr. Higurashi, how are you feeling Mr. Hijiri?" He smiled, "Bankotsu. My name is Bankotsu." "Right Bankotsu, well it is nice to meet you now that you are awake. You have a few broken ribs, lucky that you didn't puncture your lung. Other than that just the stitches on your left side and some bruises. We want to keep you for a few days just for observation to make sure you don't have a concussion." He gave a small laugh, "Thank you." He said. Kagome nodded and as she walking to leave he then said. "How is Inuyasha?" She quickly stopped and turned back to face Bankotsu, "What?" "Inuyasha Takahashi, he came back. How is he?" She stared at him for a moment and looked very confused.

"I'm sorry how do you know that I know Inuyasha?" Bankotsu smiled, "I served with him. And your picture saved my life."
