Chapter 11
Kagome looked at the man and was now very confused. The woman went over to Kagome and hugged her, "You have saved my husband more than you know!" Kagome just stood there not hugging the woman back just continued to stare at Bankotsu. "Maybe you should sit down for a few minutes and I can explain. I am sure you think I'm mad." Kagome nodded and sat down on the chair near the bed.
Bankotsu went right into the story. "Inuyasha and I met at boot camp, we were chosen together to go out to special missions. These missions ending with us in special operations, we started as the youngest in our squad and saw a lot of bad things and did a lot of bad things." He stopped for a minute and his eyes glazed over, after another minute or so his wife said. "Bankotsu. Sweetie?" He shook himself of his thoughts, "Sorry." Then he continued, "We had been in a secure location camping out for at least a week and were very tired from walking and hiding out. It was a small village and we were in an area that was abandoned. When walking back to the base one night, I was behind Inuyasha and something fell on the ground behind him. I was a good ways back from him, I hadn't slept in days and it was starting to get to me. I bent down to grab what fell, it was the picture of you that he kept in his helmet, as soon as I bent down a rocket (from a rocket launcher) came across where I was standing." Kagome just continued to stare as she was trying to process what he was saying. From the bed Bankotsu reach out and grabbed Kagome's hand, Kagome was surprised by this and looked up to him, "If I wouldn't have reach for your picture I would have been hit. That would have been it. You saved my life back then and you saved it today. I want you to know how grateful I am for that. I always told myself that if I got out of the god forsaken place, I would find you and thank you personally." Kagome watched as the pain ran over his face as he told the story, that same pain she saw in Inuyasha.
Kagome stood up and leaned down to hug Bankotsu, "When you are up and better and back to normal, I know Inuyasha would love to see you." Bankotsu nodded, before Kagome left, she hugged him one more time and his wife again hugged Kagome.
She left the room and took a deep breath to blink away tears. It was all starting to make sense with how Inuyasha has been acting.
Aa Kagome drove over to Sango's she looked down at her phone and realized it was almost 4 in the afternoon. Sango had texted her a few times asking if everything was okay, Kagome quickly texted back to let her know she was on her way and to break out the wine.
She pulled into the driveway and took a deep breath as she got out of her car and walked up to the door. Sango met her with the door open and held out a glass of wine. "There you are." She greeted with a smile, Kagome smiled back and took the glass from her friend as she walked into the house. Sango shut the door and followed Kagome over to the kitchen table where she sat down. "So what happened at work that we are breaking out the wine?" She asked taking a sip from her glass, she had already stated on hers, Kagome took a large drink and began.
She explained the man that came in and the frantic wife and then went into the story of how he knew Inuyasha and the story of the picture. Once the story was over, she was ready for a refill. Sango stared at her as she refilled the glasses. "So this man knows who you are and about you because of Inuyasha." Kagome nodded, and Sango continued, "And of all the hospitals and all the emergencies rooms he ends up in yours?" Kagome again nodded, "And this is the second time you "saved" his life?" She said adding the air quotes around saved. Kagome nodded again, "Yup. That's it." They were silent for a moment and then Kagome said, "He kept a picture of me with him." She was staring at her wine glass, running her finger about the rim, Sango gave a small smile. "Because you are important to him Kagome." Kagome didn't say anything for a moment, "He is alone and damaged. He came home and tried to talk to me and I have been nothing but a selfish bitch holding onto the past Sango! How could I be so horrible and not notice the signs. The sudden anger and distant look in his eyes, he has PTSD and I am just adding to it."
Sango reached out to Kagome's hands and she looked at her, "Don't you do that Kagome. You did not know, and you have been hurt just as much as he was. You have every right to be mad at him, this doesn't give him a free ride to be an ass, which he knows and I'm sure is regretting. Don't give him special treatment because of this, that won't help either of you. Just go see him and start from there, baby steps." Kagome signed and nodded in silence, she looked over to the backdoor and saw Kisa through the window running around with the boys out back, "She can stay here tonight. I have clothes for her." Kagome looked over to Sango and smiled, "Thanks San." She said getting up, Sango nodded and took Kagome into a hug, "Anytime sweetie."
Kagome pulled up to Inuyasha's house and it was almost 7, she noticed all the lights were off and she almost put the car in reverse and left but she stopped herself. "Kagome you can do this! It is only Inuyasha." She said to herself as she shut the car off and got out. She walked up to the door and knocked and waited a minute, she heard nothing from inside and still no answer. She looked around for a moment and saw a flower pot and smiled, she bent down and dug through the dirt until she found the key. "Somethings never change" She said with a smile. She got back up and unlocked the door and walked in, turning the lock on the door behind her.
The house was dark and she noticed some bottles around the living room coffee table and some on the kitchen counter. She continued to the stairs, once she was in the hall way she saw a small flicker of light beneath one of the doors at the far end of the hallway. She slowly walked over to it and reached for the knob, as she walked in she said, "Inuyasha?" She didn't get an answer but when she walked into the room she noticed the light was coming from a candle on the dresser on the far wall and Inuyasha was in the bed, it looked like he was asleep. Suddenly he was tossing and turning, she walked over to wake him up from what was apparently a bad dream when she noticed he was in a sweat and then he started yelling. This made Kagome slightly jump, but she reached out to him to lightly shake him away, this did nothing to help. He was shaking and tears were coming down his face, worry broke over Kagome's face she sat down on the edge of the bed and was now shaking him hard.
"Inuyasha wake up! Wake up, you're fine!" He continued to toss, "Inuyasha its Kagome wake up! Come on, you're safe. Wake up" He jolted up and stared at her, he quickly got out of the bed and left her sitting there. "What are you doing here Kagome?" He asked looking very confused, "I came to talk to you. Are you okay?" He didn't say anything and walked over and grabbed some sweat pants off his floor and put them on over her boxers. He then turned on the light, Kagome had to stop herself from gasping from the sight she saw of his back, and it was full of scars. Huge jagged ones, to smaller ones that looked like bullet wounds. She got up and walked over to him, he turned around and saw her face and then noticed he wasn't wearing a shirt and reached for the one in the chair. She stopped him, she reached out and touched the scars on his chest and he just watched her.
"Inuyasha what happened to you?" She said quietly, he pulled away from her and walked away over to his bed. "I don't need your pity Kagome." She closed her eyes and let out a sigh and went over to the bed as well; she sat down and pulled him down next to her. "I am not giving pity Inuyasha, I want to know. I want to listen now, I want to know why you didn't come back after the fight. I want to know you again." She said grabbing his hand, he looked down at her hand in his and he held on like it was his life support.
They sat just holding hands for a few moment, not saying anything; Kagome watched Inuyasha and his face. She could practically see all the thoughts running through his head, all the emotions crossing his face. She spoke quietly to him, "I'm not here to judge you Inuyasha. I never have and that isn't going to change." "I was scared to come home after that fight. Those things I said to you, I should have never said them. I knew I crossed a line. I spent a lot of time with my brother those first few days. Racking my brain for a way to come back to you."
Kagome looked at him with sad eyes, and opened her mouth to say something but he stopped her. "Please don't. Running from my problems is the biggest regret I have. Next to leaving you and not speaking to you for so long." Kagome just stared at him, she looked down at their hands intertwined and she started rubbing her thumb over the back of his hand.
"I over reacted that night. Telling you to leave I mean. I shouldn't have let my stress dictate our relationship." She said quietly, barely above a whisper. He took her chin in his hand and lifted her face to look at him, "You did not drive a wedge in between us. My selfishness did that Kagome not you." He said as he got up and started pacing the room, "I let my emotions get in the way of things. I let it get in the way of us, I let it get in the way of how I dealt with situations out in our squad missions and I have let that take away from a lot of things. Including someone's life."
Kagome stared at his back with a confused look, she got up and walked over to him. She placed her hand on his shoulder, "Inuyasha anything that happened out there could not have been avoided. Things happen for a reason." He slightly pulled away from her, she looked down at the floor and took a deep breath. "I'm going to make some coffee for us okay?" He turned around and gave a small emotionless smile, "I don't have coffee." She gave a small laugh, "Alright to the gas station I go. I will be back okay?" He nodded.
After Kagome left, Inuyasha decided to take a shower and clean up his room a bit. While cleaning he laid down for a few minutes, but ended up falling asleep being he hadn't had a full night sleep in a few weeks. Not that the 'full' nights he got were even at a full rest anyways.
Kagome finally came back to Inuyasha house and only had hot chocolate, the gas station had run out of coffee. It was now going on 9 and she had texted Sango a few minutes ago to just let her know everything was fine and to check on Kisa. When she got back in the house, she noticed that the light upstairs in Inuyasha's room was still on. She walked up the stairs especially careful not to spill the drinks. As she walked into the bedroom she smiled, seeing Inuyasha fast asleep on the best. She went and placed the hot chocolate on the bedside table; she turned off the light and laid down in bed next to him and watched him sleep for a long while to make sure he was okay before she slowly drifted to sleep.
Kagome woke up to the sound of thunder ringing through the house, it made her jump awake. She gave a quiet laugh, and then sighed. She rolled over and reached out to touch Inuyasha, when all she felt was bed. She sat up, "Inuyasha?" Then lighting and thunder again, the lightning illuminating the room, so for a quick moment she could clearly see that Inuyasha was no longer in bed.
She swung her legs over the side of the bed and let her feet touch the cold hard wood floor. She padded over to the light and flipped it on, but groaned when the room stayed dark. "Well the power is out." She continued out of his room into the hallway, she heard noises coming from down stairs, she walked slowly down the hall way and called out with a shaky voice. "In-Inuyasha where are you?"
As she got downstairs the lightning kept coming in flashes and lighting up the room for seconds at a time. It was messing with her eyes, she kept blinking to focus. Another huge clap from the thunder and again a bright flash of lightning. With this last flash she came into the living room and saw a figure crouched on the floor in the corner. She slowly walked over to it and placed her hand on the shoulder. His hand reached up and touched her hand, "Inuyasha are you-" She stopped mid-sentence and removed her hand from his, and felt that is was wet and warm, the lightning lit up the room, and she gasped when she saw what was on her hand was blood.
"Inuyasha?! What did you do?" she knelt down next to him and turned him to face her, he was holding a very sharp bloody knife (almost like a hunting knife). "I can save him. I can I just need to get him back to the medic." He said looking past her from what she could see, "Inuyasha save who? It is just me and you. No one is here." He shook his head and stood up quickly. "No, I can save him before he bleeds out. I can get him back I just need to get Bankotsu." Kagome was trying to think on her feet, 'He isn't here. It's in his head.' She thought to herself.
"How about you give me the knife." She said slowly reaching for his hand. "Then we can go to the medic together." He flinched with each clap of thunder, Kagome got the knife out of his hand and let out a sigh of relief. She drug him upstairs and into the bedroom and then into the adjoining bathroom.
"Inuyasha look at me." He was sitting on the side of the bathtub, looking down at his hands. "Inuyasha its Kagome. Please look at me." She was so worried, it was like he was an emotionless void. She reached out and took his face in her hands, "Inuyasha." He blinked a few times and then stared at her with shock and fear. He stood up quickly and looked around the room and winched as he looked down at his arm and saw a long cut. Kagome followed his gaze, "Oh god, okay hold on come here." She grabbed him and lightly led him to the toilet, she pushed him down and reached behind his head and grabbed the towel off the rack and began to wrap his arm.
As she fumbled through the linen closet to find a wash cloth she noticed the light had come on in the bedroom from when she turned the switch on earlier. "Oh good power." She turned around and flipped on the switch in the bathroom. Now she could easily examine Inuyasha, she looked over at him; he stared down at his arm and the bloody towel wrapped around it not saying anything since he was downstairs. She couldn't imagine what was going through his head. "Inuyasha I will be right back I am going out to my car, I have a first aid kit, we need to clean your arm." He just looked up at her with red tired eyes. "Okay I'll be right back. Stay there." With that she quickly ran out of the room and to her car.
When she came up to the bathroom she was soaked from the heavy rain fall outside. "Okay we will just get this cleaned up and it will be easier now with the light." She finally found a rag and was able to wipe his arm, before cleaning it with a small bit of rubbing alcohol. Once it was clean she started to wrap it with a bandage, "You won't need stitches so that is good. There, all good to go." She said giving him a small smile. He continued to look at the ground, "You shouldn't have stayed." He said in a raspy voice, she didn't know what to say, she just looked at him when he finally looked up at her he noticed she was dripping wet. "Let me get you a shirt, you are soaked." He stood up and walked into the closet that was also in the bathroom, he then came out with a t-shirt and handed it to her. "Thanks." She reached for the bottom on her shirt then stopped and looked up at him, "Oh right." He turned around quickly so she had a bit if privacy. "Not like it isn't anything you haven't seen. But thanks for the respect. All good." He turned back around and looked at her wearing nothing but his shirt and turned back around to head back to his room.
"Why did you said you'd rather would've had me leave? Does that happen a lot, I mean I hope the accident with the knife doesn't" He gave a sigh and kept his back to her as he spoke, "I don't like people to know. I already created a scene at your house. I am really sorry about that by the way." Kagome walked over to him and took his shoulder and turned him around. "I am just sorry that you have been handling this alone. I should have let you explain things. Seeing you like that," She pulled him into a hug, he stiffened a bit and then relaxed and hugged back. "I just want to make it all go away." She continued to hold onto him and he rested his head on top of hers. "You don't have to tell me the small things Inuyasha, but please let me in. I don't want you to deal with this alone."
