Chapter 16

Inuyasha just kept thinking about that night with Kagome over and over, and then her odd reaction the next day. They hadn't been together since, he had texted her to check on her the last few days as she was really busy with work. Now he was laying in his bed just staring at the ceiling and then turned to his side and realized it was already 5 in the morning; he hadn't slept at all. He gave an aggravated sigh and got up as he remembered that he was supposed to be at Rin's at 8 to work on the baby's room. "Might as well go get in the shower, and get some coffee." He said walking into his bathroom to get ready.

When Inuyasha got to Rin's she was in a nesting frenzy, she had piles of things all over the house of what she was getting rid of. "Uh Rin what are you doing exactly?" Inuyasha asked a bit confused as he stepped around boxes of old clothes and old kitchen items. Rin plopped down on the couch and laughed.

"I'm in my nesting stage." Inuyasha just stared at her like a deer in headlights, "I-I'm sorry what?" He asked a bit bewildered, Rin gave another laugh and patted the couch for him to come sit next to her, he did as she gestured.

"When a woman is pregnant, she goes through what is called "nesting." It is where we go through something similar to "spring cleaning" except this is to make room for the baby." He continued to just stare at her for a minute, then she continued. "Kagome was crazy when she did it. I think she had 3 garage sales." She laughed again, and then started to get up, but then stopped and placed her hand on her stomach and had an intake of breath. Inuyasha immediately went into defense mode.

"Rin are you okay, is something wrong with the baby?" He asked starting to get up in alarm, Rin grabbed his hand and pulled him back down on the couch.

"Inuyasha I'm fine, it is just a bit of Braxton hicks. Nothing to worry about." She gave him a smile, and then saw more confusion, "They are like practice contractions." He nodded, and then went back to what she was talking about earlier.

"So Kagome got rid of a lot of stuff?" He asked looking around the room, Rin noticed his face and smiled. 'He wants to know about her when she was pregnant. That is so sweet.' She thought before she answered.

"Oh yeah, she got all new furniture and repainted a bunch of rooms. She had so many pregnancy books she could have opened a book store with them. She always cooked too, everything was homemade and she would always bring us all food. I was around her a lot to help out, Souta was not there until Kisa was almost born and Sango was busy with the twins a lot at that time." Inuyasha listened to Rin and could see Kagome running around her kitchen cooking. It was something she did when she was nervous, it was to make herself busy.

"She worked right up to her going into labor also. Never did stay home, she wanted to make sure that she would have her 3 months off when Kisa was born, and then have enough money to pay for things." Inuyasha slightly frowned at that, he wasn't a fan of whoever this low beat guy was that would leave Kagome to handle a baby by herself. Not that she wasn't completely capable of doing so, she was the strongest person he knew, but for her to worry about money and Kisa made him sick. Rin noticed his change in mood and touched his hand again.

"She never struggled Inu, she was okay. Still is, you know how Kagome is." He nodded, "Well I am going to get started on the room. Let me know if you need anything. Take it easy for a while though okay?" He said as he got up and headed towards the soon-to-be-nursery.

Inuyasha worked until Sesshomaru got home, which was around 8 pm, at that time he had finished the floors and had all but 1 wall completely done. Sesshomaru came walking into the room to find Inuyasha cleaning up.

"You have been busy today I see." He said standing in the doorway, Inuyasha turned around and nodded.

"Yeah, I want to make sure that everything is done by this week. Rin was having Braxton hicks and it made me worry, I don't want this baby to come early and have no room. Sesshomaru shook his head at his brother, "The baby isn't coming this early, but thank you."

Inuyasha was walking out the door and Sesshomaru came back into the living room to see him out, "Inuyasha I really appreciate what you are doing. Also, I feel a lot better that Rin is here with you and not alone. So thank you again."

"Keh, don't mention it. It is nice to be with Rin anyways, not sure what she sees in you but hey, what can you do about it?" He said with a smirk, Sesshomaru rolled his eyes and opened the front door. "Goodnight Inuyasha." Inuyasha nodded and with that left the house, Sesshomaru closing the door behind him.

…

"Mommy wake up, it is time to go see Auntie Rin!" Kagome groaned being she was exhausted because she helped cover part of a shift and didn't come home at her normal time and she went in earlier last night. She then rolled over to see Kisa jumping up and down next to her bedside. She then smiled to herself, she loved this child so much. She sat up and grabbed Kisa and pulled her into bed with her, which caused Kisa to squeal in delight and then Kagome began tickling her. After a 10 minute tickle fight and them both getting dressed they were walking out the door to head over to Sesshomaru and Rin's house.

Rin was running around the kitchen cleaning like a mad woman when Kagome walked in with Kisa on her hip, "Uhm Rin you okay honey?" She asked setting Kisa down who ran out of the room to find Sesshomaru but instead found Inuyasha in the nursery, being Sesshomaru was at work.

Rin stopped scrubbing the counters and turned to Kagome and smiled, she then took off her rubber cleaning gloves and hurried over to give her friend a hug. Kagome gave a small laugh at this and then they both pulled away, "I cannot stand the smells in this kitchen!" Kagome looked at her friend and laughed because all she could smell was cleaning products and the candle she had burning on the windowsill over the sink; of course she wasn't pregnant.

"Rin. Sweetie, I think you need to sit down." Kagome said walking her over to the dining room table, "Your house is immaculate, and it smells fine." Rin opened her mouth to say something but Kagome continued, "I know your sense of smell is super sensitive right now, but you really should be relaxing."

"She is right, we don't need any more Braxton Hicks coming about." Inuyasha said as he walked into the room holding Kisa's hand.

Kagome immediately felt her stomach do flip flops and then she started to blush she hadn't felt like this in a long time. She was nervous around him like she was once upon a time and that thought scared her. She turned and looked back at him and noticed he was now holding Kisa, who was playing with his hair.

"I didn't know you were here." Kagome said as she sat next to Rin at the table, and she cut in.

"Oh yeah, he is almost done with the nursery and I am so excited to see it! He won't let me in there you know. Says it is a surprise" She said using air quotes.

Inuyasha looked from Kagome over to Rin and rolled his eyes, "You also shouldn't be in there with the paint fumes." To that Kagome nodded.

"I hope you have the windows open to air it out as well, you shouldn't be locked in a room with fumes either."

He looked back at her and now Kagome could see the dark circles under his eyes and she knew he hadn't slept in a few days and she got a knot in her stomach. He noticed her concerning stare and put Kisa down, she then went over to Rin and put her ear against her stomach. "Is the baby okay in there Auntie Rin? I don't hear anything?"

Rin placed her hand on Kisa's head and laughed, "Well you may not to be able to hear the baby but they can hear you." Kisa pulled away quickly and looked up at Rin with surprised eyes, "Really?!"

Kagome shook her head and smiled, and Rin continued, "Yes babies can hear what is going on out here, so you can talk to them and they will know who you are before they even get here."

Kisa got real excited and cupped her hands over her mouth and leaned towards Rin's belly. "Helloooooo in there!" she yelled, Inuyasha just laughed as he watched her continue to talk to the baby then he turned his attention to Kagome who just happened to be looking at him. When she saw that he had caught her staring her face turned red and she turned away.

"Can we talk?" He asked placing his hand on her shoulder, she turned back and looked up at him standing behind her and nodded.

They both left the dining room and out in the backyard to talk in privacy, Kagome immediately sat down at the table out there and began to pick at her cuticles out of nervous habit. Inuyasha smirked to himself at her cute habits and sat down next to her. "About the other night –"

Her head snapped up from looking at her hands and she cut him off, "Please Inuyasha do not say it was a mistake, I know there is a lot of weirdness between us and everything right now, but I don't know if I can handle you calling it that." He stared at her in a bit of a shock and just didn't understand where that was coming from.

He laughed, which she was a bit taken aback by and then she stood up. "Inuyasha I don't think this situation is the least bit funny, and if you do. Maybe it was a mistake." She finished in just above a whisper.

"Kagome I am laughing because you are the smartest person I know, but you make the funniest assumptions." She was silent at that point, she didn't know what to say to that, she was now confused. She thought they were coming out here and he was going to tell her that the other night was a complete mistake and that he should have never come over. She had so many things running through her head at that moment she didn't even listen to what he had said and then noticed he was staring at her waiting for a response.

"I'm sorry. I wasn't listening, what did you say?" He closed his eyes and sighed a bit in frustration, and then said again. "All I wanted to say is that I hope the other night wasn't a leap in the wrong direction. I want to become friends again." He said and then they were both silent.

"Look, I know that I am not the best at telling people what I mean or how I am feeling and I know I am more reserved than I was before. But I just don't want you to give up on me okay?" He said quickly not meeting her gaze, she smile and stood up and walked over to him and touched his upper arm which caused him to look down to her.

"We will just start over." He nodded and then pulled her into a hugged which was a surprise to her. When he hugged her that night at his house, she felt all the pain and the need for her and this wasn't any different. The knot within her stomach grew as she dreaded the feelings he had and what was going to happen.

Kagome went back inside after that and continued to chat with Rin while Kisa watched movies in the living room. While the girls were talking Inuyasha went back into the nursery to continue working but after a while decided it was maybe time for him to leave, it was getting later in the evening and he just wanted to be home.

As he was walking out he noticed Kisa was lying on the couch holding her stuffed dog and went over to her and smiled at her innocent face. He knelt down and brushed the hair from her face and she stirred and bit and he instantly froze, scared that he had woken her, but she just snuggled closer to her stuffed dog and rolled over.

From the kitchen he heard Kagome, "Well I should probably get going, I have to take Kisa home and I have another shift tonight I picked up at the hospital."

"Kagome, don't you think you are over working yourself, I think you have worked at least 40 hours this week and it is only Wednesday. You don't want to over work yourself like you did before." They both then came into the living room and saw that Inuyasha was now holding Kisa and he then walked over to Kagome and asked for her keys and said he would take her out to the car for her. She nodded and grabbed them out of her back pocket. Then they all walked outside and Kagome and Rin continued.

"Rin I will be fine, I am just helping out and picked up a few hours from a woman because her kids are sick. I would want the same done for me if Kisa was sick. Plus, you know I like to keep myself busy."

Rin smiled and hugged Kagome awkwardly with her ginormous belly and then said, "Just make sure that you aren't too busy for when this baby comes. I am so ready for it and I want everyone to be there." Kagome shook her head and laughed, "Rin I wouldn't miss it for the world."

With that said Rin waddled back inside and Inuyasha was just finishing putting Kisa in her car seat and he gently shut the car door and turned to Kagome who was just watching him. "You know she is right."

She looked over at him and rolled her eyes, "I am fine, and this isn't something I can't handle. Plus with everything that happened with Kikyo and the time I had off I have a lot to catch up on. Everyone just needs to calm down." She said getting a bit irritated now.

"Kagome you just need to make sure you take care of yourself, you overwork yourself and that is what worries us." He said trying to back out of a hole that he didn't realize was happening.

"Right me working is not taking care of myself and my daughter, because who else is going to do it?"

Then words were coming out of Inuyasha's mouth before he knew it, "Well if you had someone else around, or even Kisa's so called dad you wouldn't have to do everything alone would you?" As soon as he finished saying it, he was trying to back pedal, "Agh Kagome, I'm sorry I didn't mean that. Don't listen to me."

Kagome was already walking over to the driver's side of the car, and then looked over to him and gave him an enraged look, "Fuck you." With that she got into her car and drove off, leaving him standing in Sesshomaru and Rin's driveway. "Damnit"

"Why does he have to go and open his stupid mouth like that?" She said aloud to herself, she was seething with anger from his comment. It was like that fight 4 years ago all over again, him making comments about her being at work. Of all people he should get it, he is the one person who fully understood her and still questions why she does things. Then to have the audacity to bring up her being on her own. Sure he didn't know that the "father" he was shit talking was him, but if he knew about Kisa then maybe that wouldn't be the situation.

Kagome was now sitting at a stop light and had put her head down on the steering wheel and let out a long sigh, she could feel the tears burning, like fire, coming to the surface. "What am I going to do?" She thought to herself but then jumped from the sound of the car honking behind her because the light had now turned green. She waved her hand behind her to apologize and continued home.

She yet again let out another sigh, this was becoming a common thing for her she realized; and then she turned off the car engine after pulling into her driveway. She got out of the car and then went and grabbed Kisa out of her car seat, she shifted in her mother's arms and then said in a very groggy voice. "Mommy is Inu coming to stay the night again?"

"No baby. Inuyasha has his own home." She said reluctantly, all she wanted to do was apologize to him maybe she overreacted a bit to his comment but she would leave it alone for now.

"Can I sleep in your room tonight?" Kisa asked with her eyes still closed and still half asleep, Kagome gave a small smile and kissed her daughter heads, "Of course baby."

As she carried Kisa up to her bedroom, she placed her on the far right side of the bed and then went to go get her pajamas. After Kisa was properly dressed in her pajamas and snuggling her stuffed dog, Kagome tucked her into bed and then went to take a shower to be alone with her thoughts of what she was going to do about Inuyasha.

He had been home for only 20 minutes and had already drank a quarter of his current bottle of Vodka and he was now in his "gym" throwing punches at his punching bag to blow off some steam. When he left Sesshomaru's he was to say the least confused, he knew he made a dumb comment but was still confused why Kagome got so angry about this "dead-beat" man that left her.

He felt a jealousy towards this man especially since the other night with Kagome; he had her in his grasps again. Everything mind numbing to him had faded away when he was holding her, touching her, kissing her, everything about her made that all disappear. Something no one else had to effect on him to do. The Vodka took a bit of the edge off, but he had to stay awake and keep drinking to not focus on his unwanted thoughts. But this other man had all of her and then left and he was jealous of what he had with her. The family he so desperately wanted with Kagome and this man let it go.

"What did I think was going to happen?" He asked himself in between punches, "Was I going to come home and she was going to come running to me with open arms?" He continued to hit the bag harder and harder.

"Of course that wasn't going to happen, she had a life after me, and still has one. She has Kisa, she HAD another man and that son of a bitch left her. Left them both." He now had to stop hitting the bag and he was continuing to get angrier. He went back to the alcohol.

He was laying down on the couch in the same room staring at his ceiling, and just kept drinking. He made his way downstairs and few time to grab more alcohol, at one point he switched to beer and he was now getting to the point that he couldn't see straight but just kept drinking until finally he had succumbed to sleep.

A/N: Well what do we think? There are a few things going on and currently I am trying to figure out a few lose ends to tie up. Wondering if this should continue much longer, or maybe get a Part 2?!
