At the time of writing this intro, this site is being finicky about new chapters/works being posted, so hopefully that'll go away by the time that this goes up? But yeah, this is my first Mortal Kombat one-shot in the MK universe itself, and it features top MK waifu Jade and Jai, the OC of the requester, alwaysdoubted. First time I've done something like this, and if I can put the work in before the year ends, it may not be the last time. Some of his military friends had pressured him to going to an Edenian Ball.

Part of that fear came form the fact that, though Jai was friends with Jade, he wasn't as closely tied to the royalty as she was. Save for some other soldiers who served alongside in the military, Jai didn't get along with anyone else nearly as well as he did with Jade. If anything, he felt as though he should make the effort for her.

After all, she is his general. More importantly, she's his friend.

He finished getting himself dressed, and he heard a whooshing sound behind him. Turning around, he saw a purple portal open up, with Queen Sindel stepping through. She was dressed in a regal looking version of her usual outfit, with added white patterns and a small crown resting atop her head, her hair tied back in a long ponytail.

"Your Highness," Jai bowed, dropping to one knee.

Sindel giggled gently. "Oh, come now, Jai. You're a friend of the family. You don't have to bow."

"A friend I may be, but royalty I am not," Jai said, standing up. "Still, I have to ask why you opened a portal and came to my private quarters."

"Oh, apologies for breaking in like that," Sindel said. "But this portal is to take you to the ball. That is, if you're ready."

Jai nodded. "I am. I just need to add some cologne and I'm good."

"What smell are you aiming for?" Sindel asked.

Jai raised an eyebrow, then chuckled. "I keep forgetting how powerful your spells can be. Uh... something with lavender?"

Sindel snapped her fingers. "Done."

Jai sniffed his wrist, chuckling as the spell worked. "Thank you."

"You know, you and Jade have known each other for centuries," Sindel said. "And I can tell that you have something for her."

"Well... yeah," Jai said. "I mean, she's beautiful."

"Of course she is. She's Edenian." Sindel laughed a bit. "Come, now. Follow me to the ball."

Jai watched as Sindel left through the portal, and he soon followed behind her. What was at first his bedroom was soon an elegant ballroom. It had a huge floor, there was lovely mixtures of gold and green as part of the decorations, with plenty of marble mixed in as well. There was a band in the corner playing music, using harps, pianos, and drums to set a rhythm to which several party-goers were dancing.

Jai saw his military friends already there, and they wasted little time in walking over to him, greeting him in a group hug and playfully chastising him, commenting that he wouldn't show up at all. He shrugged them off, joking lightly with them as he saw a tall man with long green and black robes and a grey beard and long greying hair walk up to him.

Jai bowed. "My liege..."

"Rise, Jai," King Jerrod said with a smile. "I presume that my wife asked the same of you?"

"She did," Jai said, standing up again. He heard several whispers around the room, people saying that he didn't belong where he was with them. He cleared his throat, pushing their comments out of his head. "Thank you for inviting me."

"Ah, it's no trouble," Jerrod said. "After all, you and your fellow soldiers here saved Edenia from a disaster in Outworld."

Jai bowed his head. "Thank you, sir."

"And I helped too," said Kitana, stepping through. She wore a mix of green and blue, her dress as regal as her mother's was as her black hair was tied in a bun. "It is good to see you, Jai."

"And you as well, Princess Kitana," Jai said, almost bowing before deciding not to.

"Oh, don't be so nervous, my boy!" Jerrod said. "Today is a celebration of Edenia's heroes. That includes you." He turned to pick Kitana up and hug her. "And you as well!"

Kitana blushed and giggled, hugging her father back before he put her down. "F-Father! Hehe!"

Jai smiled. "Ever since you killed Shao Kahn, there's been a lot of piece between us."

"I'm just thankful that Kotal joined our side. I don't like having Mileena in control of Outworld, though..." said Sindel.

"Considering the brothers that I lost, I don't care for it much myself," Jai said. "Any chance to fight back her overtaking is not a chance that I'm going to waste."

"What did I just say about celebrating?" Jerrod said, making the situation a bit lighter. "Come, now. Let's drink and dance!"

Jai nodded respectfully, bowing to the king and doing the same to the queen and the princess before taking his leave away from them. He got himself a drink from the bar, and his friends soon caught up with him, ordering similar drinks as they started jibing and joking.

"Come on, Jai! Lighten up!" said one of them. "We need to have fun!"

"Yeah! You've been so grumpy since we got back," said another one. "Did you not want to come here at all?"

"You guys did kind of force me, so." Jai took a sip of his drink, letting out a positive noise. "Man... Edenian alcohol is the best."

"Oh, come on, you wouldn't have come if you didn't think that Jade was too," said the first friend.

Jai bit his tongue, hiding a snap reply to that before standing up. He grabbed his drink, gave a look to his friends that told them that he didn't want to be followed, and he went over to one of the dinner tables. He sat on his own as he watched the people dance, including Jerrod and Kitana sharing a nice slow dance too. He rose a glass to them, noticing the champagne bottle next to him. He went to grab it when his eyes glanced up to see a familiar face across the room.

Jai gulped at that, standing up immediately as his general, Jade, locked eyes with him too. Those fierce, piercing green eyes. Jade wore a gold and black variation of her usual green colours, a much more formal dress than she usually wore, and it had shades of green the same shade as her namesake in patterns on the splits on the sides of the dress. And that same dress flowed around her body as she sauntered over to him, smiling gently.

"Are you going to drink alone all night?" she asked him playfully.

"G-General!" Jai rose to his feet, bowing to her. "Uh..."

Jade smiled. "I told you about bowing and saluting when we're not fighting."

"I've heard that a lot tonight..." Jai said.

"You know why," Jai said. "I... I feel like an outcast. And even though we both came back from the war together, I don't... I don't feel like I belong."

"There is not," Tanya said. "This kombat has no benefits for either of us. I merely wish to set an example, and I say this as an Outworlder, not an Edenian: Don't fuck with Outworld again."

Jade ducked under, pressing a heeled shoe to Tanya's abdomen and flipping her over into a table full of drinks. Tanya slowly got up, some cuts visible thanks to the attack, and moved forward again.

Jade spun and tried for a kick, but she got knocked over a food table, with Tanya rolling on top of her. "Of course," said Jerrod.

Jai then spoke up nervously, seeing his chance. "Your Highness?"

"Yes?" Jerrod asked.

The soldier gulped. "Could I be her escort back to her home?"

"Hmm... I don't see why not," Jerrod nodded.

Jai nodded. "Okay. Thank you."

The former soldier went up the stairs to Jade's room, remembering where it was as he had been here before many times.
