AN: Hey y'all! I wanted to try and experiment with Magnus's POV, and honestly, I think it worked out very well. I am not sure if I want to establish a schedule to update this story because my schoolwork is kind of unpredictable but I am not sure that just updating whenever I can is the best system. I don't know how many people from the original following of this story are still reading (being that I took a years-long hiatus and all lol), but please do say hi in a review and let me know if you have any suggestions or preferences regarding the updating schedule, that will help me figure it out! Anyways, I am SO excited for this story. This chapter was SUPER fun to write, please let me know if you like it!
P.S. I don't own any of the characters, they belong to Rick Riordan and Cassandra Clare, the true gods of this world.
Love,
RV
As I listened to the blonde people talk amongst themselves, I couldn't help but think to myself that this Justin guy must be a real drag at parties. So far, everyone I had met at camp, with the possible exception of Leo and the pranking twins, was dull. Annabeth was not bad herself, she was kind and tried to answer our questions, but she had the annoying habit of forgetting we were even here, same as everyone else, which seemed to upset Alexander, so naturally, it was also upsetting me.
At first, I had been mad when she rudely interrupted my breakfast this morning, but I forgot about it when she said she had called someone who could give us some answers. And what did we get instead? Joshua, Mr. I am a priest and I can't even bother to talk to you because I can't take my eyes off Annabeth even though priests are supposed to be celibate. At first, when he had mentioned being a priest, I thought he was joking because he was way too young and he was not dressed in robes, but right after our introduction he stopped paying attention to us and went back to talking to Annabeth –whose boyfriend was there, by the way- in a low voice and in Latin. The fact that he spoke Latin made me think that maybe he was actually a priest after all. Apparently, Alexander also spoke Latin, but he seemed to speak every language as far as I could tell.
They finally stopped whispering when they heard the door open again and a group of people entered the room. One of them was Leo, who was wearing the same ugly tool belt he had been wearing at the movies. The other three people I didn't know, but they seemed like an odd combination of people. Two of them were girls, one of them was short and dark-skinned, with curly hair in stylish braids. I couldn't shake the feeling that I knew the other girl from somewhere. She was pretty, her hair was brown and long, although she had an awful hair stylist, because her haircut was messy and uneven, as if it had been cut by a little kid. Her eyes were gray (or maybe blue, I couldn't really tell) and she had a certain air of magic around her. I couldn't put my finger on why she looked familiar to me, but Alexander didn't seem to recognize her. The guy that accompanied them was tall and big, like a football player. He was probably Asian, but he looked nothing like me. His skin was way lighter than mine and his hair was cut really short, like a soldier. He was holding hands with the girl in braids and they were probably one of the weirdest straight couples I had ever seen.
They introduced themselves, but I didn't catch any of their names. Honestly, I was not interested. The camp was obviously huge and we were meeting new people every five minutes, I was not likely to remember all of their names. Besides, everyone was boring.
"You can sit down, guys, everyone is here." Annabeth said, sitting down herself. Everyone made themselves comfortable on the couches. There were only two empty spaces remaining, so I sat down and Alexander sat down next to me, looking nervous. I wanted to put my arm around him or do something to comfort him, but I didn't want to risk making him uncomfortable.
I couldn't help but sigh, because even though my life was crazy at the moment, being brought into this camp and all, my biggest concern was the fact that I couldn't figure Alexander out. I knew him, of that I was sure, and he hadn't pulled away or tried to hit me when I kissed him good night, but he seemed a great deal more uncomfortable with our current situation than I was. Ever since waking up at the cinema, my brain had been empty except for two things. One of them was my own name, Magnus Bane, although my only other memory was more cryptic in nature. The words You and Alec are a team, you love each other, protect each other were burned into my memory, as if someone had made me memorize them, or as if someone was sending me a message. When I first woke up, I had searched my pockets for a cellphone or any kind of written message that could explain these thoughts, but I had only found lint.
I must have spaced out at some point, because apparently everyone had been talking, but I didn't notice until I felt Alexander tug on my shirt to bring me back to planet earth.
"Sorry, what?" I asked, somewhat ashamed at the fact that I wasn't paying attention, even if these little meetings were getting boring.
"Have you been listening to anything?" Annabeth sighed, but her question was probably rhetorical, because she started giving me a summary of the conversation so far. "Okay, the thing is, last year Percy disappeared from camp, and we received a tip about two powerful demigods in Nevada, so when we got to them, Jason was also there, which was quite a shock because he is another child of the big three."
"The big what?" I couldn't help but ask. It was obvious Annabeth didn't like being interrupted, but so far nothing made sense to me.
"The big three," She explained patiently "the three major Olympian gods, Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. Some time ago, they made a pact not to have children with mortals anymore because they were too powerful, but Zeus and Poseidon broke the pact. Zeus's daughter Thalia arrived -"
"Thalia? The singer?" No one was happy about my interruption, but Leo let out a laugh.
"No, man, I wish that Thalia was here. Same name, though." He explained.
"- she arrived some years ago." Annabeth continued with a bitter expression on her face. It made me feel bad about interrupting her, but I sensed that maybe there was more to that story. A tale for another time, I thought. "Anyways, she got into some trouble so she, um, was absent for a while." She added nervously. "Then Percy showed up, and he was the son of Poseidon. You could say he rescued Thalia, but there was a prophecy, and it said..." She trailed off, and I could tell this story made her sad. Luckily, her boyfriend finished it for her.
"It said the next child of the Big Three to turn sixteen could save or destroy the gods." He explained. I was so mesmerized by the fact that they all talked about the Greek gods as if they were real people. When I thought of Greek gods, I could only think about naked statues.
Annabeth continued telling the story from there, and this time I was paying complete attention. If this was a summary, I could not imagine the amount of information I hadn't listened to. "Two children of Hades arrived. They were brother and sister. From the same mortal mom" She added, noticing I was about to ask another question about this. "Nico and Bianca. Hades didn't actually break the pact, they had been born a long time ago, but they were kept young by magic." She said the last part as if it was the most normal thing in the world, and I couldn't help but wonder if magic was the reason I was able to do strange things with my hands. "Bianca died, and Nico was younger, so that left Percy and Thalia to figure out the prophecy. Thalia eventually joined the Hunters of Artemis, a group of eternal maidens, so she stopped aging, frozen forever at fifteen, and Percy helped save the gods. As a thank you, they promised him they would pay more attention to their children and claim them when they turn thirteen, or as soon as they arrive at camp, in some special cases. You two are a lot older than that, and you weren't claimed on arrival or at breakfast, so it is quite a shock, especially since you don't have any memories." She seemed to remember she was telling a different story, because she then continued. "Anyway, where was I? Ah, yes. The gods made that promise and then Percy disappeared, and we got a tip to rescue Piper and Leo, and it turned out Jason was there, a son of Zeus." I had no idea who Piper was, although it was a name everyone kept mentioning, so I decided not to interrupt.
"This is taking too long" That Jacob guy spoke up. "We showed up. Thalia is my sister but that seemed impossible because she never mentioned me. We discovered I was Roman and not Greek, so my father is Jupiter, and-"
"Sorry, Jason." This time, it was Alexander who interrupted, looking at his own hands rather than everyone's faces. "This is where I got lost. You keep mentioning Greeks and Romans, but I don't get it."
Then Jason –I seemed to be remembering his name correctly- proceeded to explain, more patiently this time, how the gods had migrated from Greece to Rome, and their personalities had adapted to the change, becoming more serious and warlike. He went on about how the Romans had another camp similar to this and they had been at war, but not anymore. There had been some sort of expedition involving all of the people in the room, and apparently they saved the world, or something like that. At some point, Alexander seemed to understand the topic better than I did. Since our arrival at camp, I figured he was probably more learned than I was, and even though I had no idea why someone would want to study the Greek gods in their free time, it was kind of hot. Well, at least it was hot for Alexander to know these things, but I could not say the same thing about Jason, who was as boring as a slug, even though I was trying to pay attention to his now too long story.
"Now the Greek and Roman camps are at peace, so campers are free to come and go to either camp as long as they are claimed. Even though our memories were wiped for the initial exchange, it was a one-time thing, now it is kind of my job to make sure demigods can travel between camps safely. You could say I am some sort of ambassador. That is what I do, anyway," he added as an afterthought. "even though my title is High Priest, I am not the pope or anything like that, if that is what you were thinking."
"I asked Jason to come here so we could try to figure out if you had any connection with the Roman camp," Annabeth said. "but just as I suspected, they would have no reason to wipe your memory to send you here, and Jason just confirmed that. So far, we have no idea who your godly parents are or if there is any specific reason why you're here. Late at night, Chiron was given an assignment in the city. We don't know if it involves bringing another demigod into camp, but we hope whatever his assignment is will help shed some light on your situation."
"I think that at this time, our best hope of understanding this is trying to get your memories back." Everyone else had been silent for so long that I had kind of forgotten they were there. It was the brown-haired girl who spoke, and listening to her voice only added to my suspicion that I knew her somehow. I closed my eyes, trying hard to remember, and I saw, albeit briefly, the face of another girl with similar features. Her hair was also brown but it was longer and better kept, her eyes were the same mysterious color. The resemblance in their faces was not shocking, but they were similar enough. I tried to think of the other girl's name, but only one word came to mind.
Gray.
"What?" Asked the big kid who looked like a football player. I still hadn't learned his name. "I had a zombie skeleton named Gray." When he said that I realized that I must have spoken the name out loud, and as bizarre as a zombie skeleton sounded, I had other things on my mind.
"I know you." I said to the girl, standing up. "Or rather, I think you look like someone I know."
"Yes," She said in an annoyed voice, rolling her eyes. "my dad is Tristan McLean, King of Sparta, blablabla. Yes, I can get you his autograph, but I am getting tired of doing that for everyone at camp." She crossed her arms.
"What?" I asked, confused. "Never mind. It was not like I remembered anything important anyway." I sat back down, feeling defeated. Alexander looked at me as if to ask 'are you okay'? I just nodded and looked away, hoping he would understand that this was a topic for later.
"As I was saying," She continued, still looking annoyed. "You need to get your memories back, so I am going to try something."
"Piper I'm not sure-" Annabeth started to say, but she was interrupted. Everyone seemed to be interrupting her today.
"Close your eyes" she said to Alexander and me in a commanding voice, and, inexplicably, my eyelids started feeling heavy and eventually fell shut. I was still aware of everything happening around me, but I could not move or open my eyes. "Remember. Think about your life." When she spoke, I felt as if I had no free will. I realized that, if at that moment that girl had asked me to jump off a bridge to my death, I would, and it felt unnatural. "Tell me who you are and why you're here."
"Alexander Gideon Lightwood. I come in peace." I head Alexander answer in a monotonous voice, and I felt myself stand up, and I decided that I had to break free from her control. Everything about this felt wrong. As I tried to fight her, I involuntarily started to speak.
"I am the high w-" I heard my own voice say, and at that moment, I'd had enough. I screamed and fought back with all my strength, until I was able to open my eyes. My skin suddenly felt like it was burning up, and everyone's eyes were on me, except for Alexander's, which were still closed.
"How did you do that?" Asked Piper, with an expression of pure horror in her face. She was breathing hard, and her control over Alexander seemed to vanish, because he shook his head and opened his eyes looking confused.
"What the hell?" I heard Leo ask, followed by a string of curse words from Percy.
"What?" I asked, confused, feeling weaker every second. My burst of anger was suddenly gone. Everyone was still looking at me like I was a freak.
"Magnus..." Annabeth said in a low voice. "Your eyes."
Okay, I kinda wanted to hop in here and bounce some ideas off you guys. I have recently been reading a lot of AU/AH Malec fics and I am very tempted to write my own AH. I already have this fic and also my Last Hope story, but honestly, I am kind of blocked on Last Hope. I don't know how many people actually read it as it has a lot less reviews and favorites than this story, but I feel like maybe the best thing for me would be to put Last Hope on hiatus and start another story. What do you guys think?
