Mini. AU/AH. Klaus and Caroline play the softest game.
"Is it male or female?"
"I don't know."
Klaus arches an amused eyebrow at his wife.
"You don't know?" Caroline shakes her head, lips pressed together in a tight line to keep from grinning. "How can you not know, sweetheart? It's your character."
"The game is also supposed to only allow 'yes or no' questions, but you don't see me nitpicking."
"Which is worrying me, actually."
Caroline good-naturedly rolls her eyes. "Just ask something else, Klaus."
It's not uncommon for the two of them to get into ridiculously heated arguments over board-games, whenever they dust one off during the holidays, but, tonight, only a few evenings shy of Christmas Eve, she has something else entirely planned and refuses to let him sidetrack her, no matter the fact that said 'heated arguments' are known to lead, without fail, to exceptional sex.
"Very well," Klaus sighs, returning his attention to the character cards still standing on his board. "Is your character bald?"
"Yes."
He flicks most cards down. "Is your character old?"
Her cheeks start aching from trying not to smile. "Nope."
There are two cards left.
Klaus smirks.
"Are your character's eyes blue?"
Caroline gives a shrug, heart beating a mile a minute. "Most likely."
Klaus glances her way with a bemused frown, but, nonetheless, proceeds to flick down one of the characters then smugly reaches for the remaining one.
Wedged behind it, however, he finds an additional card.
It almost looks like a polaroid.
He plucks it out of its plastic slot.
He turns it around.
Time stops.
Yet life begins.
Nothing in the world but this very moment matters.
Klaus' fingers shake, and the blurry ultrasound clutched tightly in between them shakes together with them.
There are tears running wet paths down his face before he can even realize he's crying.
"We... we're having a baby?" his eyes rise to meet Caroline's, and she, too, is a sobbing mess.
She nods, keeps nodding over and over again until her neck hurts. "We're having a baby."
The next instant, he's out of his chair and hauling her into his arms, twirling their bodies—three of them, now—in elated circles around their living room.
"We're having a baby!"
Their tears are joined by laughters are joined by kisses.
"You guessed first, for once," Caroline teases him minutes later, lips still touching.
Klaus smiles. "It's all right, sweetheart. We both won."
