Donna stopped pounding the window, hanging outside in a maintenance cradle, to look at one of the cables as it began to spark and smoke. "Cutting the cable!" she shouted.
The cable suddenly broke. The Doctor grabbed the edge and held on, but Donna flipped over the side.
"Donna!" the Doctor shouted as he jumped to her side.
Donna held a piece of metal still stuck to the broken cable, dangling high in the air. "Doctor!" she yelled.
"Hold on!" the Doctor called.
"I am!"
The Doctor looked up at the other cable as Miss Foster began to break it with her sonic pen. "But, it'll be okay if you don't because I'll catch you!"
"What does that even mean?!"
The Doctor pointed the sonic screwdriver at the sonic pen. It sparked and Miss Foster dropped it. The Doctor reached out and caught it. He stuck both sonic devices in his pocket.
"I'm going to fall!" Donna called.
The Doctor stepped onto the edge of the cradle and balanced. He lifted a foot over the edge.
"This is no time to rethink the meaning of your existence!"
His foot felt solid air and he stepped the rest of the way out. Donna just stared at him, too shocked to even yell. The Doctor allowed himself to slowly float down.
"He can fly, of course he can fly! Of course the Martian can fly!"
The Doctor smiled at her as he stood beside her, perfectly calm, while she flailed. "So . . . do you want me to hug you . . . grab your hands . . . ?"
"Just get me down!"
He bent down and lifted her legs in one arm. "Let go. Let go."
She held stubbornly. "Could you fly the whole time I was running around in my wedding dress?"
"Yeah."
"Why didn't you?!"
"Well . . . I suppose I didn't need to. Come on, let go. We've gotta go."
"What are you standing on?"
"The air."
"That doesn't help!"
"The air holds me. It can hold you too. Just believe."
"I believe all right! I believe you're completely mad!" She finally let go and tensed.
The Doctor immediately felt the air give way and he floated down. He struggled not to fall too fast. Donna's fear bled into him. She believed she was going to fall. The Doctor reminded himself again and again that he could fly and the air could hold him. Nevermind the air, his arms couldn't hold Donna forever.
He managed to fall slowly enough that the landing wasn't too hard. He quickly put Donna's feet down with a groan. "There we go. You're fine."
She stared at him in disbelief. "Oh, brilliant! The Martian can fly! I was right. It's always like this with you, innit?"
"Oh, yes! And off we go!" He ran back inside, Donna following.
"I'm far more than that. I'm nanny to all these children," Miss Foster said, spreading her arms proudly.
All the baby Adipose had reached the ship and only Miss Foster was hanging in the air.
The Doctor stepped onto the air and slowly moved toward her, reaching for her. "Exactly! Mum and Dad have got the kids now, they don't need the nanny anymore!"
Suddenly, the levitation beam vanished. Miss Foster looked bewildered for a moment before she plummeted with a scream. The Doctor dove after her. He caught her under her arms and slowed her fall. She struggled at first, but stopped and let him carry her. He gently lowered her to the ground. She jerked out of his hands and stalked angrily away. He watched her sadly.
Donna ran out the door toward him. They looked up and saw the Adipose waving down at them through the windows of the ship as it flew away.
