Reid and Morgan made their way back to the station. Hotch and JJ were in the little conference room looking at all evidence the police department had compiled. JJ looked up as the two walking into the room.
"Did you guys find anything?" she asked the two.
Hotch also looked up at this point with a curious look on his face.
"We found that the last victim was a lesbian," Morgan told the two. "Might have something to do with things.
"I would hold your horses there," Rossi said as he turned in. "The medical examiner found semen in several of the previous victims. They were all different."
"That's two different victimologies right there," Hotch mentioned.
"There has to be something we're missing," JJ announced to the group.
Morgan quickly pulled his phone and dialed a number. Putting it on speaker, the entire team heard the dial tone.
After a couple of tones, a peppy voice picked up. "Goddess of Wisdom. How may I be of service?
"Hey, Baby Girl. We need your help."
"Talk to me." The team heard her clacking on her keyboard.
"We are getting two different vibes from our victims," Kate started. "Is there anything that linking them together, other than their looks?"
"Not really that I've noticed. They are all different in some kind of way. Some are in relationships, some aren't. Some are really active, some, once again, aren't. They run in different social circles."
"Garcia?" Reid asked her. "The people who weren't in a relationship, is there any reason why?"
On the other side of the phone, more key clacking was heard.
"What are you thinking, Reid?" Hotch asked him.
"Just thinking that since some of the victims were in relationships and the last victim was gay... Statistically, our unsub is male. Is it possible that he is going after women who are unavailable to him?"
"Our resident genius might be onto something," Garcia started. "One just got out of an abusive relationship, a couple others are openly gay, another is a woman focusing on her career."
"So, he's possibly going after women he has no chance with and killing them when they say 'no?'" Rossi asked.
"Sounds like a likely scenario," JJ mentioned. "If he's sick and tired of women rejecting him for no reason, he lashes out at them."
"There must be a trigger," Morgan brought up. "He wouldn't have started out of nowhere. It probably has something to do with a woman who looked like out victims."
"Maybe a nasty break-up?" Kate asked.
"It's likely," Hotch answered. "For now, we need to tell the department what we've discovered. JJ, can you set up a press conference? We need to caution the public about what's going on, especially since we don't have a complete profile yet. Garcia-"
"I'll see if I can find any more connections had between the victims."
"Maybe look at smaller crimes?" Rossi told her. "There were signs of evolution in the kills. He may have just moved his way up to murder."
"Gotcha, my awesome crime fighters. Over and out."
The phone ran dead. Morgan closed the phone as the team started the split up. JJ went to talk to the media and set up a press conference. Hotch went to find Chief Murray and tell him what they discovered thus far; Morgan, Kate, Reid, and Rossi returned to the case logs, trying to see if there was anything else they could find. All except the last crime scene had already been cleaned up, so they had nothing to look at except pictures.
Case files started to spread out across the large conference table. Pictures were spread out and eventually put on the boards of the room. People ended up walking in and out of the room for coffee runs and bring them new evidence. Hotch was soon joining them. Later in the evening, JJ came back. Take out boxes later started t0 spread across the room. Eventually, they decided to call in at night.
They all decided to walk to the hotel booked for them as it was only a couple of blocks away. The fresh air was good for the investigators as they have been in a stuffy room for most of the day. It didn't escape anyone's notice that they corralled JJ between them. She didn't mind; it was just them being family.
Reaching the hotel, they were quickly given their keys and split up into three groups from there: JJ and Kate, Hotch and Rossi, and Reid and Morgan. Saying goodnight for the evening, they went into their rooms and got ready for the night.
"I call shower first," Morgan told Reid. He quickly dumped things on the closest bed and inside the safe in the room before jumping into the bathroom and closing the door behind him,
Spencer didn't mind. He just sat on the other bed and fiddled with the business card that was still burning a hole in his pocket. Pulling it out, he looked at the blue angel wing again and the number on the front. He really liked the woman from the few hours they talked. He would have been there longer having he not been called in. Thinking to himself, there's no way she's still in the office late at night. He decided to leave a message, practicing it in his head before sending the call button on the phone.
It rang a couple of times before a tired voice came to his ear. "Hello," it said.
Spencer completely froze. He was expecting to hear the answering machine.
"Hello?" came through the phone again.
"Hi," Spencer squeaked into the phone.
"Who is this?"
"Spencer. We met this morning."
The voice on the other end immediately perked up. "Hey, I wasn't expecting you to call. I figured you would think I was weird or something."
"I actually wasn't expecting to talk to you. I was prepared to leave you a message. That would have been less nerve-racking."
"Yeah, my work phone is my cell phone."
"Isn't that really dangerous?"
"When you work with at-risk kids that could need help at any point in the day or night, I figured it was a sacrifice I was willing to make."
"I was calling because I would like to see you again."
"That would be better if you were actually talking to me instead of playing phone tag."
"I don't really talk to people outside of my co-workers; I was nervous."
"I think everyone is nervous when it comes to these things. Especially us introverts."
"Usually, after a case, we get a couple of days off."
"Are you asking me out on a date, Spencer?"
"I guess I am."
"Well, then, I accept."
"Really?"
"Yes, really. I did creepily introduce myself to you first."
"How about I call you when I'm back in town?" Spencer asked Alex.
"I look forward to your call. Good night, Spencer."
"Good night," Spencer said just as the bathroom door opened. Morgan walked out with an old T-shirt and sweats.
"Who were you talking to?" he asked the genius.
"What?" he responded.
"On the phone," Morgan continued with the seemingly confused genius. "Who were you talking to?"
"Oh. One of my book buddies." It wasn't entirely a lie, but it was a truth that Morgan wouldn't make too much fun over.
"You're such a nerd," was his teasing response.
Spencer collected his clothing and toiletries and made his way into the bathroom. He hopped into the shower and quickly made his way out. When he got out and finished brushing his teeth, Morgan was already asleep and slightly snoring. Spencer quickly bounded into his bed and plugged his cell phone into an outlet. He promptly fell asleep, mentally exhausted from the investigation, with a smile.
