The door of the apartment did its familiar squeak as it opened, and Callie Torres' voice had hit her before she had even set a foot over the door jam.

"Sofia Robbins Sloan Torres, you had better have a good excuse or so help me Dios te voy a matar!" Callie looked furious as she strode across the living room to the kitchen, where Sofia was headed.

"Momma! It's no big deal I was just over at Rachel's house and I lost track of time"

"No me cae bien esa niña…" Callie muttered in Spanish as she reached the island countertop that separated her from her teenage daughter.

"Momma! Please just speak in English my brain is tired"

"I said that I don't like this girl!"

Sofia became annoyed then. "You don't even know her! You have never met her."

"I have met her Sofia. I have met her and one thousand girls like her. The cool, rich kid who just gets everything handed to her on a platter. The mean girl who doesn't care about her studies because daddy will just pay for her to get into an ivy league anyway."

"Ok well first of all you literally grew up with a trust fund so don't pretend to be someone who came up from the bottom. And secondly, you can't assume that Rachel is a mean girl when you know nothing about her."

"I know that you come home every day talking about her like the sun shines out of her butt and you don't mention anything about any of the things you're actually studying and…" She stopped when Sofia moved past her to reach for a plate in the island cupboard and Sofia froze momentarily when she heard her Mom take a dramatic sniff.

"Sofia… Have you been smoking?"

"No." it was no use. Callie knew her inside out and Sofia could never lie to her. Callie's rage exploded over her.

"I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU! THAT IS SO DISGUSTING. THIS GIRL IS LITERALLY POISONING YOU"

"It wasn't even her!" Sofia shouted before she could stop herself. The silence that fell was worse than the shouting.

"They belonged to your Mom didn't they? I'm going to kill Arizona. Tiene 14 años y está fumando ya pues claro porque si tu madre fuma tú también vas a fumar…" Once Callie was mad, the Spanish flowed and Sofia knew that it would be her Mom Arizona who was going to get the earful about the cigarettes. She sat down with the tomato pasta her Mom had made and focused on eating that. She hoped that Arizona wouldn't also lose her mind over the fact that she had taken a cigarette out of the packet hidden in her bedside cabinet. She and Rachel had tried to smoke it on her balcony, pretending to be like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's but instead the two had nearly choked and had fallen around giggling after the head rush left them dizzy and slightly nauseous. She wasn't sure why her Mom even smoked when she was stressed. Surely the nausea would make you more stressed. It was just her luck that it was Callie that had caught her. Callie hated cigarettes.

Sofia's phone buzzed, and she saw that Rachel was texting her.

'Was your mom cool about you being late? Who are you staying with tonight? xx'

'She's kinda mad but she'll be fine. I'm with Callie. Xx'

'Oh Callie is cool though. She eloped in Vegas! She shouldn't care about being a little late xx'

Sofia thought about Rachel's logic, she had told her a little more about her Moms when she had been at her house and had mentioned Callie's marriage to George, her fling with her dad and about the cheating that had broken her mom's up. Callie and Arizona had never talked to Sofia about the last part, but she knew about it from Zola who had overheard her mom talking about it to Callie one day. Her Momma was a total badass when she was younger. She was still pretty badass according to the other doctors and nurses at her private practice. But she was definitely not one to be 'cool' when it came to Sofia and breaking rules.

Callie had stopped ranting in Spanish and had slumped down on the sofa, her hand covering her eyes. Sofia came over to her and sat, curled up on her lap. She was far too big to do this comfortably now, but she knew that this was how she would win her Momma over. Callie was like a mother bear. Fierce at times, especially when provoked, but always ready for a cuddle. She wrapped her arms around Sofia and leant her head against hers, without saying anything.

"Sorry Momma, I won't be late again. Rachel is nice, I promise! You just have to give her a chance"

Callie sighed and straightened up, looking past Sofia into some unknown space.

"You're right. You should invite her over this weekend."

"I'm with Mom this week"

"Oh right. Next weekend then. We can go to the theatre or something. How does that sound?"

Sofia squeezed Callie close, "Thank you!".

As she got up and headed over to her bedroom she heard Callie take out her phone and dial a number. She knew who she was calling before she closed her bedroom door and heard Callie's muffled voice say; "Arizona, we need to talk."
