Chapter Nineteen: Change of plans and… Werewolves?

The school talked of nothing but Sirius Black for the next few days. The theories about how had entered the castle become wilder and wilder; Hannah Abbott, from Hufflepuff, spent much of their next Herbology class telling anyone who'd listen that Black could turn into a flowering shrub.

The Fat Lady's ripped canvas had been taken off the wall and replaced with the portrait of Sir Cadogan and his fat grey pony. Nobody was very happy about this. Sir Cadogan spent half his time challenging people to duels, and the rest thinking up ridiculously complicated passwords, which he changed at least twice a day.

"He's barking mad," said Seamus Finnigan angrily to Percy. "Can't we get anyone else?"

"None of the other pictures wanted the job," said Percy. "Frightened of what happened to the Fat Lady. Sir Cadogan was the only one brave enough to volunteer."

Because of Sir Cadogan Jack wasn't seen at all in the Gryffindor well unless he was dragged by the Weasley Twins or the Golden Three. Madam Hooch or even Toothiana started to oversee the Gryffindor Quidditch training for safety reasons for the boy-who-lived.

The weather worsened steadily as the first Quidditch match drew nearer. Undaunted, the Gryffindor team were training harder than ever under the eye of Madam Hooch. Then, at their final training session before Saturday's match, Jack dropped a bombshell on Oliver and the Team.

"Where's Jack?" asked Oliver "He's always early."

"He said he'll meet us here." said George.

"Sorry I'm late" said the white-haired boy as he walked tough the door to the change rooms, not really looking at anyone with his hood up. Immediately the twins knew something was up, Aster had told them that Jack with a hood up it meant Jack was upset or hiding something.

"Jack?" asked Fred coming up to him "What happed to get you upset?"

Jack bit his lip, not really knowing how he was going to tell his team, something important.

"Come on you can tell us, it can't be that bad" said George giving Jack a confidence booster.

"Um Oliver, have you heard about the bet?" That got the teams attention.

"What bet?" asked the twins and Oliver.

"It started with a bet between North and Bunny, when Sandy and I would have to verse each other" said Jack rubbing the back of his neck.

"Why do I feel there's a but coming?" said Fred to George.

"And you'll be right; the rest of the teacher board heard about it and put in their two cents."

"Two cents?" asked the pure-blood players.

"Oh right you wouldn't know that saying… um put in their two Knuts?" Jack said getting more black looks he sighed. "They put in their own bets, even Sanpe."

"Oh… okay what's so bad about that?"

"It's not only the teachers but the Perfects and Head Boy and Girl have their own bets and um..." Jack looked out to the door and looked down at the floor. "The first game has been changed. I was told to pass on the message," Jack looked away "well me and Sandy where asked" he add quietly to himself.

"To what!?" said Oliver knowing the first game has always been Gryffindor verses Slytherin.

"Um us verses … Hufflepuff."

"What! Why!?"

"Madam Hooch and Dumbledore what to get it out of the way, created too much tension between the teachers."

"Do you know what the bets are?" Fred asked.

"Some of them" said Jack with a shrug. "North and Bunny I know; North for Griff and Bunny for his own house. McGonagall and Sprout for their own. Sanpe is a little different. He bet I would get more gaols past Sandy then…" he stopped felling a little uncomfortable at the rest of the team were now staring at him "Um …Alicia and Angelina um… together but that Hufflepuff will win in the end. Tooth didn't bet because she didn't want to go ageist either of her boys, but she is the one who has been telling me and Sandy of the bets she has heard of."

Oliver grounded, "That's just great. Hufflepuff have a whole different ball game Slytherin and it's a whole new team."

Jack felt bit guilty as he felt that he was the reason that the match had been changed.

The day before the match, the winds reached howling point and the rain fell harder than ever. It was so dark inside the corridors and classrooms that extra touches and lanterns were lit. Jack, Aster, Sandy, North and Toothiana were all seen with a glowing ball floating above their heads when walking around. When asked about it Jack and Aster said was a gift from a friend, their own personal nightlight… well Jack called them moonbeams, which received a whack over the back of the head from his taller brother.

Jack and Harry had no room to worry about anything but the match next day. Oliver kept hurrying up to them between classes and giving them tips. Wood talked for so long that they made it to Defence Against the Dark Arts late too bad it wasn't Professor Lupin teaching the class.

"This lesson began ten minutes ago, Frost, Potter, so I think we'll make it fifteen points from Gryffindor. Sit Down."

It was Snape.

'Well this is going to be fun, I wonder were Lupin is?' thought Jack as he sat down next to Neville, but Harry didn't move.

"Where's Professor Lupin?" he said.

"He says he is feeling too ill to teach today" said Snape with a twisted smile. "I believe I told you to sit down?"

Harry didn't move he kept questioning Snape well until he threatened fifty points from Gryffindor that made Harry sit down.

"Now turn to page three hundred and ninety-four." Snape said in his monotone voice.

Jack roughly turned to four hundred then flicked back to the right page. His eye brow rose when he saw the page.

"Werewolves?" Ron asked out loud after Snape cast his own spell on his book to the right page.

"But Sir, we have only started on Hinkypunks –" Hermione started, making some of the class jump as they didn't see her next to Harry before she spoke up. Jack's other eye brow rose joining the other.

"Miss Granger" said Snape, in a voice of deadly calm, "I was under the impression that I was taking this lesson, not you. And I am telling you to turn to page three hundred and ninety-four."

As some of the last of the class flicked though their books, Jack was staring at Hermione, 'she was not there before hand, maybe Bunny or Sandy or even North can shear some light on the subject' thought Jack.

"Which of you can tell me how we distinguish between the werewolf and the true wolf?"

Everyone sat in motionless silence; everyone except Hermione whose hand, as often as it did, had shot straight into the air, just before Jack's did but not in the same manner as she did.

"Anyone?" Sanpe said, ignoring Hermione and Jack, whom put his hand down and started playing with his staff, knowing Sanpe was planning something for his twisted smile was back. "Are you telling me that Professor Lupin hasn't even taught you the basic distinction between a werewolf and a real wolf, what would you do if you meet one and didn't even know it?" Some children near Jack started to shiver it was getting really cold, ice was even starting to form on the floor. "I should write to Professor Dumbledore saying how far you all are with your education –"

"Please, sir" Said Hermione, whose hand was still in the air, "the werewolf differs from the true wolf in several ways. The snout of the werewolf –"

"That's the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger," said Snape coolly. "Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-al–" Sanpe didn't even get to finish as what looked a wolf made of ice jumped from behind Hermione and snarled at Sanpe. Snape's eyes flicked to Jack just as he stood up as another ice wolf formed beside him. But this one was different, it had a shorter snout, more human-like eyes, a tufted tail, and the claws were more like a human hand with five digits including opposable thumbs. The back legs were a little longer than the other ice wolf, and were bending at a weird angle so it could walk on all fours, but if seen from a distance you wouldn't be able to tell it was any different.

"Please Professor, may I say that most of us learn more if we are shown the defence not just talk about it." Jack said as the first ice wolf came back to his side. "That's how I've learnt mine you I was living on the streets at the time." Jack stared to smile "I'm just glad they both can't climb trees, because I'll be dead or one of them."

"I'd advise you to sit down Frost" said Snape with venom, almost as bad as Pitch.

Jack gave a laugh and a cheeky smile to Snape he looked Snape right in the eye, planted his staff and sat down right on the hook on the top. The small ball of light bobbed up and down like it was laughing as well.

"I told you to sit down Frost"

"But I am Professor" said Jack innocently.

"I don't know how you didn't end up in my House, Frost you are one of the most cunning person I've meet" Sanpe snapped, slowly losing his patients.

Jack gave a smile "I'm a Snake in Lions clothing, so what?"

The class looked form Snape to Jack, surprised he was having a head on with the teacher again and wasn't afraid of the consequences, but what got them was he just said he was a Slytherin in Gryffindor, but as still brave enough to face of the toughest teacher in the school and jump in front of bully to save them from getting hurt.

Jack pushed himself up as his feet could sit underneath as he crouched on his staff, "You asked if we knew the difference between a werewolf and a real wolf, well I can show you and the class the difference." He pointed to the first wolf that was on his left. "This is an arctic wolf also called snow wolf or white wolf one of my personal favourites. This one is a werewolf," he pointed to the one on his right which had risen to stand on its hind legs, "an arctic one to be precise." Jack had just finished as both of his Ice Wolves exploded. The force of the explosion was able to push Jack off his staff and on to the floor with a loud bang. Sanpe advanced on the fallen boy slowly and the room held its breath, the class knew Jack had taken it too far.

"Detention Frost," Snape said silkily, his face very close to Jack's who just raised an eye brow at the professor. "And if I ever hear you criticise, make fun or even mock the way I teach a class again, you will be very sorry indeed, your parents will hear of this."

"The already know what has happed, you see; the moonbeams can talk to each other, even from the other side of the world" Jack said calmly and looked just as calm, as he pushed himself of the floor. "Even my brothers know. I'm not afraid of you Severus, I have many fears but you are not one of them."

"Keep going Frost, and you won't play tomorrow."

Jack made it back to his seat; 'well I better not disappoint my team then.' Jack thought, the moon-beam shone brightly twice.

'Jack you better not say anything more. I do want to verse you tomorrow' came the words in to Jacks mind.

'Sorry Sandy, I didn't think it would go that far.' Jack shot back knowing his 'brother' will get it. Jack and Sandy who knew how to send messages though the moonbeams as Nightlight had thought them how over a few nights but Aster, Ana and Nick could only hear what was going on and not reply they were all joint to the moonbeams being the guardians of childhood, but only Nightlight, Jack, Sandy and Manny could 'talk' though them. Jack wasn't lying when he said the others knew already, they could hear what was going on, just like now they can hear what Sandy and Jack were saying, but couldn't reply. 'I just had to do something I couldn't stand him picking on Lupin and Hermione like that. What class do you have now?'

'History and North just told me to tell you to do some work, he does not want to put up with an angry Snape later on, and that his proud of you; for sticking up for your friend and Lupin.'

'Thanks North'

The moonbeams were quite after that, nothing major happened so they stayed quite. And so did Jacks classmates, they made not a sound for the rest of the lesson. They sat and made notes on werewolves from the textbook, while Snape prowled up and down the rows of desks, examining the work they had been doing with Professor Lupin.

"Very poorly explained… that is incorrect, the Kappa is more commonly found in Mongolia… Professor Lupin gave this eight out of ten? I would have given it three…"

When the bell rang at last, Snape held them back.

"You will each write an essay, to be handed in to me, on the ways you recognise and kill werewolves. I want them by Monday morning. It is time somebody took this class in hand. Frost, stay behind, we need to arrange your detention."

The class left the room not noticing Aster standing by the door waiting for Jack, hearing every word that was crossed by Snape and the Spirit of Winter. Not even a minute later Sandy joined him.

"Frostbite has really done it this time hasn't he?"

The Sandman shook his head, knowing Jack could have made it a lot worse.

"What do ya think he'll get?"

Shrug and the sand make a picture of a nightmare, tho it was golden not black, and a Dementor with one of those signs like the Ghostbusters has.

"Not as bad as Pitch and the Dementors? I guess ya right."

The door opened and out walked Jack with a thoughtful face.

"What ya get?" asked Aster putting an arm around his shoulder.

"Cleaning."

"Really?"

"Yep"

"What's the catch?"

Jack looked at Aster with a smile "No magic, but at least I wasn't ignored, that would have been worse" He looked over at Sandy "that would have been right with the Dementors and Pitch."

Aster and Sandy looked at each other, Jack had just come clean with them about one of his fears, maybe by the end of this year they just might know their news member better.
