Chapter Twenty-Two: Mondays Blues.
Jack was almost relived when Monday came around, he liked Madam Pomfrey he just didn't like that room. The Slytherin were glee full at the Gryffindor's defeat, but Jack can't bring himself to care he was back with his family and that's all that matters to him. What Draco told him was the truth and it showed in their Potions class, Snape kept giving Jack strange looks like he doesn't know what to think of him. Jack stayed behind after class.
"Is there something you wanted to say Frost?" Snape asked when he saw him coming up to his desk.
"No sir"
"Then why are you still here. I thought someone like you would take the first chance to leave class not stay behind."
"I say you don't know me very well then, do you?"
"Your pushing your luck, say what you need to say then leave Frost."
Jack gave a smile as he placed a two rolls of parchment down on the desk, "My Werewolves essay Professor. You said to hand it to you, did you not?" Jack walked to the door as Snape stared at the essay with disbelief. Jack opened the door and as an after thought he looked back. "You may believe what you wish Professor, but know this; I'm not like other Gryffindors," and with that he was gone.
After lunch Jack's year headed to Lupin's classroom.
"If Snape's taking Defence Against the Dark Arts again, I'm going off sick," said Ron. "Check who's in there, Hermione."
Hermione peered around the classroom door as Jack just rolled his eyes and walked straight in. 'Really! He's in Gryffindor for Moon's sake where's that bravery?' he thought as Hermione gave the okay.
Indeed Professor Lupin was back to work. It certainly looked as though he had been ill. His old robes were hanging more loosely on him and there were dark shadows beneath his eyes; nevertheless, he smiled at the class as they took their seats, and they burst at once into an explosion of complaints about Snape's behaviour while Lupin had been ill.
"It's not fair, he was only filling in, why should he set us homework?"
"We don't know anything about werewolves-"
"-two rolls of parchment!"
"Did you tell Professor Snape we haven't covered them yet?" Lupin asked, frowning slightly.
The babble broke out again.
"Yes, but he said we were really behind-"
"-he wouldn't listen-"
"-two rolls of parchment!"
Professor Lupin smiled at the looks of indignation on every face all but one, Jack watched on with amusement.
"Don't worry. I'll speak to Professor Snape. You don't have to do the essay."
"Oh on" said Hermione, looking very disappointed. "I've already finished it!"
"So, you finished big deal?" said Jack gaining her action and some others as well "I've already handed mine in, right after Potions this morning."
"You did?"
Jack nodded.
"You're bloody nuts!" exclaimed Ron
"Um can I talk to later than?" asked Hermione ignoring Ron's out burst.
"Um… sure"
They had a very enjoyable lesson. Professor Lupin had bought along a glass box containing a Hinkypunk, a little one-legged creature who seemed as though he was made of wisps of smoke, rather frail and harmless-looking.
"Lures travellers into bogs," said Professor Lupin, as they took notes. "You notice the lantern dangling from his hand? Hops ahead –people follow the light then-"
The Hinkypunk made a horrible squelching noise against the glass.
"Very funny," mumbled Jack making a face at the Hinkypunk.
When the bell rang, everyone gathered up their things and headed for the door, but Harry was called back.
"I'll catch up with you later Ron" Hermione said as she passed him racing to catch Jack. "Jack wait up."
Jack stopped to look back at her.
"I need to talk to about something. Do you know a place were we wont be over heard?" Hermione asked when she made it to him.
"Tooth's office will work, she wont mind, come on"
Toothiana's office was bright and colourful and very organized, but busy.
"Now what did you need to talk about?" asked Jack, he made himself comfortable sitting on the desk playing with some sort of instrument that was sitting there.
"Snape's essay did you work out why?" Herminie asked playing with her hands.
"Other then he's extremely jealous and that he fears werewolves?"
"No not tha…wait... WHAT?"
"And you're meant to be the smart one?" Jack mumbled under his breath.
"No look, it was a full moon just before September the first, and it was a full moon last-"
"I know when the moon is full thank you" Jack cut over 'considering that's when we have our monthly meeting, because that when North can 'speak' to Manny'
"So you'll know that Lupin has fallen ill or seemed ill when-."
"When there's a full moon" Jack faced her and crossed his arms becoming serious. "So you figured it out?"
"You already knew… of course Professors Toothiana and North would know and so would you and your brothers. Why didn't I see it before it wasn't the essay that tipped you off you all ready knew that Professors Lupin is a Werewolf?" Hermione said.
"Wait you think… you think North and Tooth told me?" Jack said with disbelieve making Hermione look at him oddly. "Hermione I lived on the streets for almost most the life I remember. I knew as soon as I saw him on the train what he was. I was the one who told them."
Hermione just stared at Jack. The door opened but she didn't notice. She was too busy in her own thoughts; 'He knew and still stuck up for him, he isn't afraid of what he is. Maybe I should do the same. He must be doing something, to keep everyone safe from himself.'
"Hi Tooth" Jack welcomed Ana.
"Something the matter?"
"No we just need a place to talk," said Jack "We were the only one to do the werewolves essay set by Snape. Hermione asked if I figured it out. I told her I already knew."
"Oh?" Ana looked worried but Hermione had too much going on to work out why and if it mattered.
"Since the train," Jack said with an eye roll 'really, I'm not stupid Tooth.'
"Oh yes of course," Ana put her hand on Jack's shoulder and pushed him towards the door "Well you too better get going, I'm going to have visitors soon and you don't need to be here, I'm sure you have homework to do."
At the word homework Hermione pulled herself back to getter. "Oh yes, thanks for letting us use your office Professor. We'll see you in class."
"Say hi to your visitors for me Tooth." Jack said with a laugh.
"You don't even know who my visitors are," said Ana with wonder as Jack was racing down the corridors looking for the Weasley Twins, to have some fun with.
