Chapter thirty: First of the Season.
Everywhere they went the next day they saw signs of tighter security; Professor Flitwick could be seen teaching the front doors to recognise a large picture of Sirius Black; Filch was suddenly bustling up and down the corridors, boarding up everything from tiny cracks in the walls to mouse holes.
Sir Cadogan had been sacked. His portrait had been taken back to its lonely landing on the seventh floor, and a new portrait had been put up. It was of an ape-like creature, taller than an average man. It stood up right like a man. It was a Yeti, a bluish grey Yeti by the name of Phil. By the second day Phil had know all Gryffendors by face and name. Jack, Sandy and Professor North had all been seen having a conversation to the Yeti and it looked like they could understand what the Yeti was saying.
The Staff meting about the Portrait swap had Jack and Aster included.
"I don't understand why it is taking so long for the Fat Lady to be fixed."
"So something like this couldn't happen again. A've had to stretch a new canvas, and add protection properties to it." Aster had said.
"Her dress was torn as well, I've had to redo the dress from the start." Jack said. "The painting we did of 'The Sandman' and 'The Boogie Man' took us almost a year to do, and that's with out the protection spells and runes."
"Phil is the best ya got until we're finished, and ya know the best thing about it. Only North, Sandy and Jack can understand Yetish and only North and Jack can speak it."
Ron had become an instant celebrity. For the first time in his life, people were paying more attention to him than to Harry or his brothers, and it was clear that Ron was rather enjoying the experience. Though still severely shaken by the night's events, he was happy to tell anyone who asked, what happened, with a wealth detail.
Neville was in total disgrace. Professor McGonagall was so furious with him she had banned him from all future Hogsmeade visits, given him a detention and forbidden anyone to give him the password into the Tower. Poor Neville was forced to wait outside the common room every night, for somebody to let him in, while Phil watched his every move. None of these punishments, however, come close to matching the one his grandmother had in store for him. Two days after Black's brake-in, she sent Neville the very worst thing a Hogwarts student could receive over breakfast –a Howler.
The school owls swooped into the Great Hall, carrying the post as usual, and Neville choked as a huge barn owl landed in front of him, a scarlet envelope clutched in its beak.
"Run for it, Neville," Ron advised who with Harry was sitting opposite Neville.
Neville didn't need telling twice. He seized the envelope and, holding it before him like a bomb, sprinted out of the Hall, while the Slytherin table exploded with laughter at the sight of him. They heard the howler go off in the entrance Hall –Neville's grandmother's voice, magically magnified to a hundred times its usual volume, shrieking about how he had brought shame on the whole family. Before Sandy, Aster and Jack felt sorry for him and cast a Silencing Spell around the hall so they couldn't hear Miss Longbottom anymore.
After class found something that one would never think would happen. With the help with Aster's tunnels Jack got Draco down to Hagrid's.
"What the Bloody Hell was that?" Draco exclaimed, when he was pushed out of the tunnel near Jack. Draco hair was a mess from the wild ride though the tunnels.
Aster who came though with Draco laughed. "My tunnels mate."
Jack grabbed Draco's arm and dragged him along. "Come on you'll miss them."
"Miss what?""Not telling." Then Jack looked behind Draco. "You coming Bunny?"
Aster gave a smile and started to race after the two. Jack had discarded his robe and was only in the school shirt and pants. Aster had a good old laugh when he noticed Jack also discarded his shoes.
"Where are we going?" Draco asked as the entered the forest, at the back of Hargid's, he sounded worried.
Jack turned to Draco and smiled, "You just need to believe in me, alright?"
Draco swallowed and ever so slightly smiled. Before he knew it he and Jack were air born.
Jack and Aster laughed as Draco gave a shriek.
"Okay I'm going keep holding you. But we have to jump off each tree branch together." Jack smiled as Draco nodded. Jack took to the trees as Aster transformed and followed from the ground.
It took a while and a few laughs from Aster, when Draco would trip or forget to jump so Jack had to drag him or almost fall, to get to the field where the Hippogriffs were stationed. Jack stopped in a tree that looked over field, and got Draco to sit next to him on a thick tree branch. Aster soon joined then sitting on the other said of Jack. Jack didn't tell them anything but just pointed out to the Hippogriff, that he flew with at the start of Hargid's first class.
She was lying down on her nest and looked up like the Hippogriff knew they where watching. She moved her wing out of the way to show a foal-fledgling.
"First of the season?" Aster asked quietly.
"Yeah, Hagrid and I didn't know if it survive." Jack said with a small smile. "Worked my but off keeping Snowflake and her young one alive."
"What its name?" Draco asked, not moving his eyes away from the pair.
"Hagrid named him after me since I worked so hard." Jack said.
"So it's name's Jack?" Aster asked.
"No" Jack turned to Aster, "Frost." Jack sighed "And if we don't win his father is going to be killed."
"What do you mean by 'win'?" Draco asked finally turning to Jack.
"Your father's case about Buckbeak," Jack said with a sad sigh. "If Hagrid loses Frost might die. A mother can only do half of the job."
They sat there for a few more minutes before Aster spoke up. "Come on it's getting dark we better start heading back."
Jack nodded and stood up handing his hand back to Draco. "Come on I have something to show you back at Hargid's before we head back up to the castle."
