Here's Chapter 6! Sorry for the delay in uploading, I couldn't get this chapter to flow the way I wanted it to. I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Santana awoke at 3 am to Brittany frantically shaking her. She was sweating and was bawling her eyes out. Brittany was whispering something in her ear but she wasn't listening. She couldn't stop replaying her dream in her head.
"Finn, Finn! Where are you?" Rachel screamed. She sounded like she was in pain, like she was dying.
Santana couldn't see anything except Rachel's panicked face, stained with tears.
"Rachel, what's wrong? Where's Finn?" Santana asked as she tried running towards Rachel to comfort her, but as she began getting closer to her, Rachel's face stated moving further and further away.
"Rachel no! Don't die, stay there and I'll find Finn! Don't leave me Rachel please..."
Santana's blood curdling scream woke Brittany up with a fright. She rubbed her eyes and watched Santana struggle and kick the bed sheets before quickly loosening the sheets. She began shaking Santana softly in an attempt to wake her up, but after 10 minutes of no luck, she proceeded to shake her more forcefully.
"Did...the baby... make it?" Santana asked between sobs as she finally awoke. She couldn't stop, she felt as if someone had ripped out her heart.
"Santana your having a bad dream. Nothing has happened. I woke you to help you. You were starting to scare me."
Santana breathed a sigh of relief and leaned back into the blondes arms. It was a dream.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Brittany asked as Santana relaxed back into her arms.
Santana nodded and turned on the bedside lamp before turning back around.
"It was about Rachel. She was crying and screaming for Finn but he wasn't there. I tried helping her but when I walked towards her she got further away, like she was... dying."
Brittany traced lazy circles onto her back and blinked back tears.
"I can't say it will be okay. I wish I could Sanny but, what if it's not? I haven't been able to sleep. I can't get Rachel off my mind. I don't want to lie to you San, so I'm going to be honest. I'm scared Rachel's going to die. I know she might not, but what if she does? I couldn't stop imagining what would happen, how our lives would change."
She paused as her warm eyes met Santana's. She hated the thought of Brittany lying awake, fearing Rachel's future, but she also admired her bravery.
She nodded to urge Brittany to continue.
"If Rachel gets too sick, I know she'll leave us, and go somewhere else, where she won't feel any pain. If the baby dies too, Finn will be really sad, so we have to be there for him. If the baby does make it, but Rach doesn't, Finn will be a single parent. He'll try manage on his own, because that's what Finn does, but he'll have to go back to work eventually, so..."
She paused and blinks back tears. This is my decision. He needs this. Brittany thought to herself before clearing her throat.
"I had been thinking about it for a while before I fell asleep, and the pros of my decision massively outweigh the cons. If Rachel doesn't make it, I want to take a career break. A short one, just to help Finn through the first few months. He'll try talk me out of it but I don't want him to be alone. Also, if it's alright with you, think we should postpone the wedding."
Santana took a moment for Brittany's words to sink in. She didn't want to race the possibility of Rachel not making it, however she knew it might be the outcome.
She thought back to the night she proposed to Brittany.
It was the night before Kurt and Blaine's wedding, and she was running through last minute details with Artie. She returned to the hotel room at 1 am and flopped onto the bed.
"What if it's a disaster? What if they don't like it?"
Santana jumped onto the bed beside her and gazed into her worried blue eyes.
"Britt, you've worked so hard on this wedding for months. You and Artie have been phenomenal, you especially. They'll love it. And maybe they'll return the favour soon."
Brittany frowned at the Latina as she rolled off the bed and got down on one knee.
"Brittany S Pierce, I love you so much. I don't think I could ever love someone the way I love you. The way you make me feel is beyond words, so, will you make me the happiest girl alive and marry me?"
It's scary how your life can be perfect one minute, and falling apart the next.
"Britt, this is a big decision. It's so kind of you to give Finn the support he'll need. If Rachel..." she paused, attempting to steady her voice.
"If Rach doesn't make it, Finn will be crushed, and will probably be sad for a long time. I agree with postponing the wedding. And if your comfortable with leaving work for a while, I fully support you."
Brittany nodded. This was the right decision. She knew that doctors could get it wrong, and was hanging onto that ounce of hope they had for Rachel, but she knew it was her responsibility to step in when Rachel had gone.
"I'll miss her." Santana whispered. "She really doesn't deserve it. She's a good person."
"She's the best person."
As always, all mistakes are mine. Thanks for reading!
