CHAPTER TWO - PART ONE
I'm Kaminari Denki Now (1)
Life… had been uneventful… aside how he has to deal with snotty and immature children on a daily basis. There wasn't much he could do when he's so young and small.
It did surprise him that he was in the same kindergarten as Midoriya Izuku and Bakugou Katsuki. But afterward, the novelty died down because they aren't even classmates. He doesn't want to deal with them too. Katsuki is too overbearing and demeaning while Izuku is too meek. Seeing them being themselves but as small children was already tiring.
Aside from dealing with his peers at the Kindergarten, Denki's time is productively spent in the house. He learnt cooking, baking, and making drinks from Tsubaki. He used his allowance to buy recipe books, books about physical training, and books about physics and all about electricity. Under Tsubaki's guidance, he learnt how to do chores by helping her. The woman was all for him being capable.
Then his quirk manifested. The day started with him feeling twitchy and jolty upon waking up. He realized it when he was about to rub his face, a habit he could never manage to discard.
His golden orbs had stared to his right hand which he was going to use to rub his face with. There were yellow sparks on it.
"Huh…?" He let out dumbly.
After three seconds of thinking, he decided to stay put in bed. His bed was made of wood and his comforter was thick and definitely not a conductor. It's the safest and most comfortable place to be at the moment since his house is full of electric appliances.
Half an hour after that, Tsubaki knocked and went in while saying in a sing-song tone, "Denki-chan wake up! It's morning-
She looked startled upon seeing him awake. "Huh? If you're awake why aren't you getting ready yet? Are you feeling unwell?" She asked upon seeing him dazed and shivering. "Is it flu?"
"No I didn't get the flu, I think," Denki mumbled. "I'm not feeling very well though. I feel my insides buzzing, Tsubaki-san. And I see my hands emitting sparks. Do you think it's my quirk?" He asked, showing his uncovered hands. He was still wearing long sleeve pajamas at the moment. "It's like okaasan's quirk, isn't it?"
Tsubaki's jaw dropped. "We… we gotta go to the hospital! Let's go, Denki-chan!"
While waiting for his turn Denki stared at his palms and fingers. He was telling the truth earlier. He felt his insides buzzing loudly, as if there were thousands of ants crawling around in his organs. His stomach was the worst off. He flexed his fingers and closed his eyes.
'How do I use this quirk?' He pondered.
Electricity is formless, the way 'Denki' used his quirk… does it mean his body is a conductor? And by the looks of it, the source of the electricity is somewhere in his stomach. How do 'Denki' direct the electricity to specific places, like his hands?
With his mind?
'Move over here!'
He stared at his fingers. Nothing happened.
"Kaminari-san!" One of the nurses called.
"Let's go, Denki-chan."
Denki looked up and tightened the blanket around him. The hospital was crowded and there were many kids his age.
.
"Good morning, Sensei," Tsubaki greeted politely.
"Yes, good morning Kaminari-san. How may I help you?" The fairly young doctor said.
Tsubaki didn't correct the doctor, Denki didn't mind at all. "Ah yes, that's right. Denki-chan has been feeling unwell from the moment he woke up this morning, Sensei. His condition has been like this," she explained, gently taking off the blanket he's using to cover himself with.
Upon seeing his state, the doctor's eyes widened. "Ah, electricity… Denki-chan, can you describe how you are feeling?"
Denki did, extensively. He told him how he felt there was a big ball of energy in his stomach and all parts of his body tingled. All surfaces on his body are tingling and he noticed his scalp, his toes, and his fingers the most. After that the skin underneath his clothes, in which he was made aware of the friction between his clothes and his skin. He also told the doctor how he felt a prickling sensation in his eyes and in the walls of his mouth, his ears were ringing, and he couldn't focus his mind. Hearing his detailed explanation the doctor hummed.
"I understand now," he said before kneeling in front of him. "It will be hard but won't you follow my instruction? I will teach you a trick to stop feeling this way."
Denki nodded, feeling a little nervous. "Yes, please."
The doctor smiled reassuringly. "Alright. First, sit down cross-legged on the bed and close your eyes." After he did that, the doctor spoke up again. "Breathe evenly and don't think of anything. Focus on how you're feeling inside, inside your stomach to every part of your skin. You can take your time."
The blonde didn't know how much time had passed. His entire attention was directed to what's going on inside his body. After a while, he could somehow visualize it.
"Can you 'see' everything? Right now, that energy is circulating everywhere without direction."
Denki felt that it was the case. He was getting dizzy, it was trying to see the start and the end of threads which were moving very fast but not tangling.
"Don't try to follow the energy's paths. That'd be impossible right now. Instead, what you should do is to imagine thick walls under your skin. That way, you can restrict the energy from seeping out," the doctor instructed, his voice was gentle and soothing. "Let's try with your right hand."
"You can imagine anything. Hmm… something like a pillow fortress."
"Imagine?"
"Mm. The thing about emitter quirk is that know-how is a lot less logical, unlike mutant quirk. The limits are blurry so you have to explore how your quirk works by yourself. Only by doing that, you will know what you can and can't do with it. Even though electricity is common, your quirk is your own." The doctor spoke up again, "Enough of the chatter. Try doing how I instructed, Denki-chan."
Denki calmed down his breathing and tried doing what the doctor was saying.
'A pillow fortress under my skin…' he thought.
He couldn't do it. How can he imagine something so unrealistic happening inside his body when he had learnt about human anatomies in the past?
After a moment, he tried a different approach. Instead of pillows, he tried remembering what the layers of human skin looked like. He imagined the lowest layer becoming sturdier and impenetrable.
"Oh oh, it worked! Try keeping it up while opening your eyes. See for yourself."
Denki did that. He stared at his spark-free right hand.
"I will write a letter so Denki-chan can be excused from school for a week. Use this time to control your electricity. After that, just in case, please wear long-sleeves shirts with hoods and/or hats, long pants, socks and shoes, and gloves. Stay away from bathing and swimming with your friends and classmates too," the doctor instructed. "After two months, come visit me again. I will test you."
"Thank you, Sensei," Tsubaki voiced gratefully.
"Thank you, um…" Denki looked to the name badge he wears on his doctor's coat, "Yamamori-sensei. I will do my best." He offered a tiny smile for the first time today. Just knowing that his situation is controllable makes him feel more at ease.
The young doctor grinned. He ruffled his hair. "Work hard, Denki-chan~"
Tsubaki waved her hand when he offered to help with the house chores. "Now now, Denki-chan, focus on your training! If there's anything I can help with, please call me."
So Denki went to his bedroom and laid down on the wooden floor. In that position, he tried to make barriers in his entire body to stop electricity from leaking out of his skin no matter how small the amount was. As he had lunch with Tsubaki, he made his decision.
"Tsubaki-san, I think I'm going to help you with house chores after all," he said.
The woman was going to refuse when he spoke up again.
"I think it will benefit me more if I learn how to suppress my electricity by doing daily activities," he explained. "After all, even at the kindergarten, I have to be able to move around. I will make my classmates upset if I keep refusing them just because I can't control it while moving… I don't want to hurt my friends. I have to be able to suppress it like a second nature," he said seriously.
"Please help me, Tsubaki-san…"
Seeing him very twitchy and nervous - he has been able to keep up the 'barriers' from the start of lunch to now and she could see that no sparks were flying about - Tsubaki's eyes softened. After a moment, she spoke up. "Alright. But I will pay close attention to you, though! I have no idea what to say to your father if you overdo it."
Denki smiled politely at the mention of his father.
He has been in Denki's body for seven months but the man still hasn't shown his face around. He's pretty sure that the man has a family and a place to return somewhere already. Denki's home isn't that man's home. It was obvious. The man didn't even give him a birthday present or congratulations in person.
He's just glad that Tsubaki is virtuous and fair. She gave his allowance properly, didn't steal anything from his home, took care of him properly, and was completely professional.
"Of course, Tsubaki-san."
.
.
*clatter*
Denki's eyes parted. His eyes were instantly to the clock. 01:32 AM. His room was pitch black but he didn't find it hard to see in the dark. It had strangely been like this from the day his quirk manifested. He didn't tell Tsubaki about it because she would surely report it to 'Denki's father again. Denki remembered Tsubaki's explanation about his parents' quirk. He was pretty sure his night vision was 'Denki's father's fault.
*footsteps*
Denki felt his heart beating wildly inside his rib cage. Silently, he slipped out of his bed and crawled under it.
'Who the hell is that? There's no way Tsubaki-san would come at this hour,' he thought anxiously.
For once, he thanked himself for being a light sleeper.
It has been four days since the appointment with the doctor's so he doesn't have school tomorrow either. He had been working really hard on his control. If he's in a still condition like this, he was able to not only prevent leaking. He can compress his electricity into one place in his stomach. He's training to do it even while doing something else. It makes him feel safer somewhat, as if doing that will make him invisible. Of course it's just in his mind. Anyways, Denki found exploring his own quirk to be really fun and enjoyable.
And he's putting what he has been training into practice right now.
'My bedroom is the furthest and most secure on the second floor. Whoever that is, surely they will not head to this room immediately. Should I escape?' Denki thought, curling into a ball with his blanket wrapped around him. It was the same blanket he carried to the doctor. He found having the blanket with him helps him calm down whenever he's feeling unsure.
*creak*
His eyes widened when he saw his bedroom door opened. Whoever that is didn't even turn on the lights in the hallways! Just who the f-
Gulping, he silently scooted to the edge so he could see who it was. After that he had all intention to go to the corner and hide behind the boxes of toys. It was hard to see who it was and he couldn't do it because the man had walked to the bed. He could only see his legs.
"Where is he…?"
Denki felt his heart stopping. He didn't realize he had started to hold his breath.
'He… This f*cker is specifically looking for me!" It was a dawning realization that made his pajamas drenched in cold sweat.
"Don't tell me…"
The man hurriedly power-walked to the bathroom, swung the door open and turned on the lights.
"Is he in the master bedroom?"
The man's voice had been quiet, but in his current state and the quietness of his cool bedroom, the man couldn't be louder than he already was.
Upon seeing the man's legs and footsteps going outside the room, Denki pondered what he should do in this situation. The man would surely return to his bedroom if he's looking for Denki. Denki can't be captured and kidnapped now. His father might not save him, and Tsubaki is a housekeeper at the end of the day. He can only count on himself.
'The window… I may not die if I jump from there. This is o- o- only the second floor,' he thought anxiously. 'It's better than being kidnapped,' He thought nervously while silently rolling out of under his bed. In haste, he climbed up his desk, drew the curtains, and opened the windows.
He was too nervous and opened the windows with too much force.
*BAM!*
The windows slammed into the wall on the outside wall, making Denki's heart jump.
*thud thud thud thud!*
The footsteps became louder and Denki looked down. 'Damn, it's high,' he thought anxiously.
While clutching on the window frames, he decided he would jump. He would!
"Denki!" The man's voice was loud and panicked. "It's me, your father!" The man exclaimed, skidding to a stop in front of his bedroom.
Denki's face, full of fear and anxiety and nervousness, snapped to the direction of his bedroom's door… to the man, the intruder. His hands were gripping so tightly to the windowsill until they turned white. His eyes widened when he recognized the man's face. It was the same face he saw in pictures with 'Denki's mother. The man's face was pale and full of horror upon seeing a trembling and scared Denki, in his ruffled pajamas, barely an inch from falling out of the second-floor windows.
"M- my otousan…?" Denki repeated, fear and confusion couldn't be masked even if he wanted to.
"Yes, Denki. It's otousan!" The man exclaimed reassuringly.
"Are you… Are you going to hurt me…?" Denki asked, still gripping tightly on the wooden frames.
"What are you talking about? Why'd I hurt my own son!" The man yelled in agitation, making the blonde flinch. The man's golden orbs were bright in the darkness. They were furious… frustrated? Denki was scared and unnerved by the man's gaze. "Please! Can you please come in and close the windows, Denki?"
The four year old boy shivered and trembled. He shook his head. "I- I don't believe you…! If you don't have bad intentions, w- why did you come at midnight? Wh- why didn't you turn on the lights?" He asked shakily with distrust. The man was utterly shocked and dumbfounded now. "W- Why are you taking the form of that man? T- That's a bad choice, I tell you! R- Rather than him, y- you should have taken Tsubaki-san's appearance! D- Don't you know that h- he doesn't l- live here? His h- home is somewhere else, he p- probably already has a fa- family too! I k- know for sure t- that he hasn't come here for seven months!"
Denki doesn't know why he's telling this look-alike all these things. Denki was truly scared out of his wits. The man looked like he could rip him to shreds. The man's expression was unidentifiable, but he's probably thinking of how to prevent Denki from jumping out. Denki was the man's target after all.
"I- I have t- to take care of m- myself t- that's why p- please don't g- go after me, Kidnapper-san! I d- d- don't want to be captured a- a- and have my organs sold a- and I d- don't want to h- have s- sex," tears were falling down harshly down his cheeks. "Y- You can t- take whatever f- from the h- house b- but not m- me, okay? I- I- If I die, o- okaasan in h- heaven w- will s-surely be upset b- because s- she g- gave up o- on e- everything s- so I can be h-here!"
He couldn't see the man anymore. His sight was all blurry. He doesn't know what he was spouting anymore. He's practically yelling everything that came up to his thoughts. 'Facing your kidnapper is so f*cking scary!' was everything that swirled in his mind at the moment.
For a while, there was no sound. 'Did he leave?' he thought, bewildered, while wiping his tearful eyes with his pajamas with one hand. His other hand was still holding the windows frame. When he had wiped his tears entirely, he saw that the man was still there in front of his bedroom in the hallway, crouching down and burying his face.
Denki looked to the man quizzically. "Um… Mr. Kidnapper? The… stomach medicine is in the drawer inside the closet…" He informed the man quietly.
"Okay, look," the man started after a moment, bringing down his palms from his face. "You can keep the windows open, but at least, sit down on your desk and listen to me. You can jump if I still act like a threat afterward."
The boy looked at the man incredulously. "W- What's there to talk to me about?" he asked, sounding brave even though his gaze was still full of fear and distrust. Twenty two at heart or not, he's dealing with a kidnapper and midnight intruder here.
"There's a lot in fact. Starting from the fact that I am your father, Kaminari Yuugo," the man started. His voice sounded weary. His expression too. It looked as if he had aged ten years in minutes. "Here, see my ID card and driving license," the man said, taking out two cards from his wallet and throwing them his way.
They skidded on the floor in a straight path and landed near the desk he was standing on.
Cautious but also interested, the boy stood at the edge of his desk and peeked to the cards while still being ready to run out of the windows. He had been looking at the man too just in case he made a phone call or something.
His golden orbs stared at the words on the card. They have the name, birthdate, address, and a few details that Denki knows of 'Denki's father. The man he had been calling a kidnapper really was 'Denki's… no, 'Denki' and his father.
'What… seriously…?'
Denki had flashbacks to everything he had spat out to the man while being scared out of his wits, turned deathly pale, before turning bright red.
"It's… you're… really my…?"
"I am," the man said quietly, his gaze was to his lap. "Wait, you can read kanji already?" He asked, looking up.
Denki didn't know how to act around this man now. He went to his windows again and sat down. He doesn't know how to treat the man who had never been around for 'Denki', but for 'Denki' and himself… he should at least hear him out, right?
"Mm, a little… I will trouble Tsubaki-san if I play outside with my classmates so I always go home immediately. I don't want Tsubaki-san to hate me… besides, I don't have friends I'm close with. At home I read books and study. I…" Denki's gaze was to his backpack on the chair behind the desk. There was one notebook inside that… "I know how to write okaasan, your, and my names. I know how to read them, and I know the meanings behind the names," he mumbled before rubbing the back of his neck.
"So… why… ah…" that's not quite right. "You… please don't do that again, okay? If… if you're not here to get rid of me… you can at least turn on the lights when you visit… I was so…" he swallowed thickly, looking towards the man in the eyes and conveyed how much fear the man had put him under. "I was so scared. I've started waking up with the slightest sound after my recent birthday and because there's only me in this house after dusk…" he rubbed his upper arm. "I'm… sorry. No matter what you're here for… I must have startled you really badly."
The man stared at Denki for a long while, his insides had been churning and his chest had been throbbing. He doubted that he wouldn't be getting nightmares over this for months to come.
'What a night,' the man thought. 'And here I am after thinking I haven't seen him in a while.'
Tsubaki may have a gut feeling about it and it was why she never dared to go out of the line, but Denki wouldn't know. The boy wouldn't have known that Yuugo dropped by once in a while because the man always did it while the blonde was sleeping.
