This Night
Chapter 163
Author's Note: So I lied, I am going to show Beth and Daryl because I'm adding another person with them. But now to Maggie and the others. So technically, I know no one actually made it into the prison, but for Ronnie's part I needed to make someone get into the infirmary. Please review
Ronnie's POV:
Ronnie had cleared most of the infirmary of supplies and put them on the bus. But she had left some bandages and surgical equipment behind and decided that they may need them. Part of her just wanted to wait until the dead took her, to join Ridge. That would be the easy way out, that's what Ridge would tell her if she was here. She had came into the prison with her husband and ten of her 'kids', now they were gone and she was for the most part alone. She didn't have the bond with the group that they had each other. She was a doctor, she had saved people's lives, and Jewel would need her when she gave birth. If Jewel survived this, if any of them survived this. Ronnie shook her head and took a breath as she leaned over the infirmary table. "This is not you Veronica, you are going to get out of here and you are going to fight. If you die, then it's because it's your time, not because you gave up. You die here, letting the dead overtake you, that's quitting. You would have yelled at your 'kids' for doing that, your soldiers. You never told them something that you wouldn't do yourself, and you aren't starting now," she said to herself out loud. She straightened up as she heard the door of the infirmary open and close.
"Well, now here I thought the prison was going to be a waist, but you may make my last few moments alive worth it," a man's voice said from behind her. "Throw out your weapons and turn around slowly."
Ronnie took a breath and palmed a scalpel that was laying on the table. "I don't have any weapons."
"Now lady, with the world we're living in, you don't expect me to believe that you don't have a weapon. No one can survive without a weapon," the man said.
Ronnie held out one hand and quickly tucked the scalpel into the waistband of her jeans as she turned around. "I'm a doctor, I took an oath to do no harm. This place was pretty safe, people watched out for me."
The man laughed. "Where are those people now lady? No one can count on anyone now a days. It's a dog eat dog world," he told her as he noticed her ring. "You married?"
"Was," Ronnie told him.
"So, you gonna make this easy for me?" the man asked as he licked his lips. "Way to end our lives you know," he said as he put his gun down and walked over to the table. "Never really been lucky in life, kinda funny how I'm about to die thanks to the chompers' out there and I find you."
Ronnie watched him come closer. She placed her hand on the table and watched until he got close enough then she grabbed the scalpel and quickly jabbed it in his neck and kicked him. "You aren't that lucky, ass hole," she said as she watched him grab his neck.
"You…lied," he gasped as he tried to reach for her.
Ronnie kicked him in the stomach to make him fall backwards. "No, you didn't ask the right questions," she said as she bent down and started feeling him for any more weapons. "See, I don't think this as a weapon, it's a life saving instrument. I've saved a lot of lives with instruments like this, never thought about using it to take one. But as you said, it's a dog eat dog world," she told him as she heard the familiar growls. "Or in this case, a walker eat dog world," she informed him. "That wound it's going to kill you in about four minutes, but you'll be dead way before that thanks to our friends out there. The prison belongs to the dead now," she informed him as she grabbed him up. "Since only one of us is going to be alive in the near future, only fitting you help me out," Ronnie told him as she grabbed her bag. "This is a real bad time to tell you that I was in the Air Force before this huh? That my husband insisted that we do hand to hand combat every weekend? I could have taken you down without this, but couldn't take the chance," she said as she grabbed his arm. "Actually have to thank you, I was debating if life was worth living. If I had anyone to live for, anyone who would care if I became one of those things. But, I'd care. I care about myself to much then to just give up," Ronnie informed him. "You're the one that's wrong, it doesn't have to be a dog eat dog world. There are some good people left in the world, they were in this prison. I am a good person, and you made me do this. I didn't want to do this, but because you are a sadistic ass hole that could only think of one thing before you died, which by the way is just so wrong in so many ways," she told him as she opened the door. "Hey fresh meat over here, that's it," she yelled as she used the scalpel again and made an incision in his arm that she was holding and pushed him out to the walkers'. She turned her head so she wouldn't watch him being taken down. She took a breath as she picked up the man's gun and ran to the other exit of the prison.
Sasha, Maggie and Bob's POV:
Maggie ran up to Sasha and Bob. "Have you seen Beth? Is she here?"
Sasha shook her head. "No…she's…" she said as Bob jerked backwards.
"Ah…" Bob reacted to the gun shot wound.
"We got to stay down!" Maggie yelled.
Bob took a breath. "Look inside my shirt, check my back for an exit wound," he instructed Sasha.
"Yeah," Sasha answered as she noticed the wound.
"That's good, we can treat it," Bob told her.
"Not here," Sasha told him.
"Stay down, we'll figure it out," Maggie said.
Ronnie shot a walker that was heading toward them. "Got room for one more?" she questioned.
Maggie looked at her. "Yeah, of course. Is that blood?"
Ronnie looked down at herself. "It's not mine. Come on we need to go," she told them as they started to walk. "I got some bandages, other things that we can clean that wound out with. I'll supervise while you clean him up," she told Sasha.
"Why me? You're here," Sasha told her.
"You're right, I am, now. But I may not always be….we learned that the hard way today," Ronnie said as she glanced at Maggie. "I'm sorry about Hershel, Maggie. He was a great man, wise too," she told the other woman as she placed her hand on her shoulder.
"We'll find Beth and Glenn too," Bob told her. "Tyreese could have made it," he said.
"We don't even know if anyone got out," Sasha answered. "This is a good place to stop, let us check on this wound. Water to our backs, decent view points from the bank. Good place to stay for the night," she said as Ronnie handed her bandages. "It's alright to smile, you're alive, I get it."
"It's not that," Bob told her.
"How's he doing?" Maggie asked.
"The bleeding stopped. He'll be alright," Sasha told them.
Maggie nodded. "Good. The three of you will be alright here for the night. The bus got out, Glenn got out. I'm going to find him," she told them.
"Jewel was on the bus too, I need to find her. Check on her and the baby. This much stress with her being a month out, it's not good for either one of them," Ronnie said as she stood up.
"Maggie," Sasha said.
"With any luck the bus is gone. It was heading east on the main road. If I follow that direction, I might be able to pick up the tracks," Maggie told them.
"You aren't going alone," Ronnie told her.
"We can't split up," Sasha told her. "You heading out with just a knife?"
"I'm out of ammo, so yeah. I couldn't find Beth. I know Glenn got out and I know which way he went. I'm gonna go after him and I'm gonna come back for you. Both of us are," Maggie told her as she started walking away.
Ronnie glanced back at Bob and Sasha and ran to catch up. "Maggie, stop. I know exactly how you are feeling. Half of you is missing, and you'd go through hell and back to get him back. But, if you don't think about this wisely, then you'll end up dead and Glenn will be the one mourning. I'm not letting you go alone, we don't split up. I just didn't kill a man to get out of that prison to get back to my family, to watch one of them storm off alone. I am part of this family aren't I?" she asked.
Maggie nodded and smiled. "Of course you are," she said.
"Not going without us are you?" Bob asked as him and Sasha came up.
"Thought you weren't on board with us looking for them?" Ronnie asked.
Bob glanced at Sasha. "I told her and I'll repeat it cause it's worth repeating. I'm tired of just surviving, I want to live. Finding Glenn and Jewel, that's living. That baby that Jewel is carrying, that's a sign of hope. Judy too. I was the last one standing in my group, twice, but now here I stand with the three of you. I don't think we are the only ones. So let's go," Bob told them.
Sasha sighed as they started walking but kept her thoughts to herself. They walked for an hour or so and stopped as they saw the bus turned over. "Maggie stop," she said as she approached the bus.
"You should go," Maggie told them as she continued walking.
"She needs to see if he's in there. It won't seem real if she doesn't. We need to see if Jewel's in there too…" Ronnie said.
Sasha nodded. "Fine, but we do this smart. We do this together. We'll let them out one at a time, two of us should be at the door, just in case it builds up."
"I have to see there faces," Maggie told them.
"I'll stand here, be your back up," Ronnie told her.
Maggie nodded at Sasha and Bob to open the door allowing them to let one out at a time. Between her and Ronnie they took them out. Maggie climbed onto the bus and took one walker out and started to cry.
Ronnie bent down to a couple of the walkers. "Guys, they are all missing weapons. And I don't see a pregnant walker."
"You think Jewel and Glenn got out?" Sasha asked.
"They aren't here," Ronnie answered as she stood up.
Maggie came to the back of the bus. "Jewel's go to bag is gone too. She had put it on the bus last week. They got out," she told them. "And, we're going to find them."
