This Night
Chapter 190
Author's Note: We are getting close! Close I say! But you all love me. Thank you all for taking this ride (never ending should I say!) with me! I wanted Ronnie and Abe to talk, both of them are fighting there own demons, on there own missions. Him with Eugene, her with Jewel and the baby. Review please
The Tunnel Group (Since there's a whole long of them to name):
Glenn and Maggie walked over to the group as they were sitting, or standing, around a fire. "Mitch, I think I missed a hug from you," Maggie said.
"You were a little busy saying hi to Glenn," Mitch answered as he hugged her.
Glenn smiled. "Us Atlanta boys have to stay together," he said. "So what's up?" he asked the group.
Sasha looked stunned. "He just said he knew what caused the outbreak," she said as she pointed to Eugene.
"He keeps saying that and how these two have to get him to Washington," Mitch responded.
"Let me guess, he asked you to go to DC with him," Glenn said.
"Of course he did, he's got a one track mind," Mitch responded.
"I'm downright tickled y'all found each other, should spend the night celebrating, because tomorrow there's absolutely no reason why the ten of us don't stuff ourselves in the van and head up to Washington," Abraham said.
Tara looked around and at Glenn. "He's right, I'm gonna go."
"We haven't found the rest of us yet," Mitch answered. "You know the ones that you said we'd have no chance of finding? Like Maggie? Or Ronnie? Or Bob? Or Sasha? But we found them, and now we need to find the rest," he answered stubbornly.
"The kids' right, Abraham is wrong. We're 55% of the way from Houston to Washington. Up until now, we've had an armored vehicle for transport and we lost eight people," Eugene said.
Rosita rolled her eyes. "That wasn't our fault," she said.
"They're gone," Abraham told her firmly.
"I can't imagine we'd have better luck with that grocery grabber we picked up. We're less then a days walk away from Terminus. Who knows what they got there?" Eugene pointed out.
"Look it couldn't hurt to check, load up on supplies, maybe even recruit some of them to come with," Rosita offered up.
"I'll go with you guys but after, I have to see Terminus," Sasha said. "My brother and sister might be there, I got to know," she told them.
"Me too, on both counts," Bob offered as he looked at Ronnie who had been quiet since they had reunited.
"My mission is to find Jewel, take care of her, and that baby, making sure they both are somewhat safe. I'm not committing to Washington," Ronnie spoke.
"You Army?" Abraham asked.
"Air force," Ronnie answered.
"I'll forgive you for that," Abraham said as he was deep in thought.
Mitch rolled his eyes. "He grows on you, somewhat," he stated.
Abe shot him a look then at Eugene. "He tells me I'm wrong, I listen. Tomorrow we go to the end of the line, then to Washington," he informed them.
Later that night Abe and Ronnie's POV:
Abe walked over and sat down beside Ronnie. "You've been fiddling with your band, but you aint mentioned a husband," he pointed out.
"Just recently died, during the flu outbreak at the prison, lost my daughter at the beginning," Ronnie answered.
Abe nodded. "Sorry about that."
"We've all lost something, or someone. You really believe that Eugene knows how to cure this thing?" Ronnie asked.
"Yeah, I do," Abraham answered. "You really think that a heavily pregnant woman could have somehow managed to survive out here?"
"Yes, I do," Ronnie answered.
"Well if that's the case, it'll be safer for her and that baby to travel to Washington in a vehicle, then on the road," Abe told her.
"That's not my choice to make, or yours. You're determined to protect Eugene, and I respect that. But respect that I'm going to protect Jewel and this baby. Whatever her and Rick decide to do, I'm with them," Ronnie answered.
"Why do you feel like you owe it to Jewel to find her?" Abe asked.
Ronnie looked at him. "Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black Sgt. Ford? I don't know your reason for believing that Eugene knows how to end this plague, but I know that I'd be a fool to question why you have to get him to safety. I'm a doctor, my job is to save people and in this world, well that's a tall order, but I'm still a doctor. I think that's the one thing in this world that means something. Jewel and this baby, and God…if Judith is alive, they'll need someone to watch out for them, that Rick knows he can depend on if they get sick. So, I'll keep my reasons to myself, and you do the same," she said as she stood up.
"Yes ma'am," Ford answered respectfully.
The next day:
Jes's POV:
Jes had seen Glenn, Maggie, Mitch, Ronnie, Sasha, Bob, and four people that she didn't recognize come into the gates. She had heard Mary welcome them, and gave them food, everything was going alright, until the big guy mentioned leaving. She had wanted to throw something at his head, to get his attention, tell him to back off, that he was ruining her plan, but he kept talking. Somehow she knew, from his body language, from the way he stood, he was military. She watched as shots were fired, not at them but at there feet, to herd them, like cattle. She glanced to where she knew Merle should be and wondered, if somehow, she should try to get Jewel and the girls out. Then she would worry about getting the rest out. She knew she had to wait to wait to see if Rick and the others showed up. She'd give them a day, two at the most. She couldn't risk them finding out that she wasn't one of them, that there was no way in hell that she would let Jewel or the girls, die for something like this. She watched as the group was marched to a train car, A, and watched them go in. There was nothing she could do yet, not if she didn't want to tip her hand. She turned to go back to check on Jewel, to reassure her after the gun fire, that they would be alright, but she wasn't sure if she was going to be reassuring herself or Jewel. She felt a hand on her arm and pulled back as she turned and saw the woman with the red beanie.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," the young woman apologized as she carried items in her arms.
Jes looked at them and recognized some of the items. "Sloan right?"
"Yeah, we got some new people in….could you help me put these things in the supply rooms?" the dark haired woman asked as she nodded to the bag.
"Supply room? I don't think I've seen that room. Is it the same as the, oh what did Claire call it, the sacrifice room?" Jes asked. If she never stepped into that room again, it would be to long. And, like hell, would any of her family names be added to it.
Sloan shook her head. "No, it's different. When new people come in, we take what we like, then we separate things, like weapons, watches, things like that, and put them in different areas. Of course, Claire showed you the room, it's her favorite. I call it the memorial room, that sounds a little less harsh. I hate going in there, seeing all the lives that was lost. Gareth and Uncle Grayson say we're either the butcher or the cattle."
Jes kept the smirk she felt coming off her face. She had been right, Sloan was the weak link, on the fence of right and wrong. Jes knew she wouldn't live, none of them would if she had anything to say about it, but she had a vulnerability that she could use. "You don't sound to sure about that."
Sloan shrugged as she walked into the room. "It doesn't matter what I think, if I disagree, I'll be part of dinner. I'd rather not be, if you understand. Have you told Jewel yet?" she asked.
"The woman just gave birth four days ago, I want to make sure she's a little bit stronger before I deliver that news to her, to make her understand that it's how Mika and her and the baby get to survive," Jes answered. Even though it was a lie, Jes knew that she wouldn't know it. She looked around the room, noticing all the personal belongings, as well as weapons.
"I don't like doing this, either, but it's better then the other options," Sloan answered.
Jes looked at the bag she had been handed by Sloan then around the room. "Why don't you go? I'm pretty sure I can handle this."
"Uncle Grayson wouldn't like it," Sloan answered as she was obviously thinking about it.
"Then I suggest you don't tell him," Jes answered.
"You sure?" Sloan asked.
"Oh yeah, I'm sure," Jes thought to herself.
"Thanks, if you see anything that you or Jewel and the kids could use, go ahead," Sloan offered.
"Exactly what I was planning on doing," Jes thought to herself. "Thanks," she answered as she watched the other woman walk out of the room.
Jewel and Jes's POV:
Jewel quickly answered the door as Jes nodded, as Hope nursed. "What was the gun shots? What took you so long? I was about ready to come out looking for you."
Jes looked at her. "You do not leave this room without me. Some of our group is here," she said as she put the bag down.
Mika looked up. "Who? Where are they?"
Jes glanced at Jewel wondering how much she had told the ten year old. She didn't want to scar the kid, but this was the world they lived in. "Ronnie, Mitch, Sasha, Bob, Maggie, Glenn, and four people I didn't recognize. The gun shots you heard were them not agreeing with the terms of staying here," she answered.
Jewel glanced at Mika then the bag. "Isn't that Glenn's bag?" she asked as she noticed the big orange bag.
Jes nodded as she threw a hand drawn map to Mika. "Mika, your job is memorize the layout of this place. If it comes down to it, and you need to help me get Jewel and Hope out, I need you to know which way to go. But we can't have evidence laying around, got it?" Jes asked.
Mika nodded. "Got it."
Jes nodded toward the bag. "Sloan said to take what I needed, so I did. They separate everything…weapons…jewelry…watches….toys….bears…clothing. They had Ronnie's medical kit in the bag, so I kept it. I got some weapons, and here," she said taking out some baby blankets, pacifiers and a front baby pack.
Jewel looked at them as her mind went back to an earlier time.
"This is a graveyard, I'm not sure how I feel about this," Lori said.
"They aint alive, can't use this stuff, we can," Daryl told her.
"If it was me out here, I'd want someone else to use it," Jewel told her.
"Jewel are you OK?" Mika asked as she saw Jewel hesitating taking the stuff.
"Yeah, fine, just remembering something," Jewel answered as she took the things.
"That husband of yours has a day, maybe two at the best, to get here. I'm not sure how long they'll keep the others alive. We need to be ready to move," Jes told Jewel. "You understand?"
"Yeah, I got it," Jewel said as she rubbed Hope's head.
