-4 Days later-
Light pressed his back to a rundown brick building as he slid to the ground, cupping his face in defeat. "This city… it's so big… how could we ever hope to find anyone?"
L glanced down before showing Beyond's picture to another passerby. The stranger shook their head and pushed passed L. "Yes, this is beginning to feel more futile than initially planned. He never said what he would do once he got here?" The brunette shook his head solemnly.
A deep voice spoke out behind them. "Probably found shelter." Both L and Light startled at the familiarity of the voice, slowly craning their heads to follow the source of the suggestion. Both young boys visibly flinched when their eyes landed on a scowling blonde, arms folded in irritation.
The raven hung his head in mild defeat. "I can't leave without him. I… I can't lose both of them."
Caspian sighed loudly, swiped the photo from L's fingertips. "You think I came here to retrieve you only? I have orders, yes, but I also have my interests." The blonde detective slipped the picture into his coat pocket. "It's October, California stays much more moderate in temperature than England, but it still gets cold, if my training has set in with Beyond, he has already sought out shelter. And a lonely kid isn't going to find anywhere nice. He's resourceful, but alone, he'll likely be somewhere less than desirable." The blonde set out ahead of the boys down the street. "Keep up." The command prompted the boys to follow the oldest man with crestfallen expressions.
The officer typed at the computer with Beyond's picture next to the keyboard. Light glanced his amber eyes around the police station, flickering lights, fluorescents buzzing quietly among the noise of clicking keyboards, phones ringing, loud conversations and the occasional shout. The brunette could hear a dispatcher call over the radio: Patrolling cars, 971-APB on middle aged teen, Caucasian male, black hair, reddish brown eyes, approximately 5'11", answers to nickname "Beyond", last absolute known location LAX, missing for 4 days."
A long silence seemed to engulf the waiting room as seemingly all the other noises muffled into the background. Caspian sat next to L and Light. "We've done all we can for now. It isn't wise to be out in such a large and dangerous city searching blindly."
The raven huffed in frustration. "It isn't safe for him either! We can't just give up! He's out there alone! If it's dangerous for you, what is it for him?!"
Static from the dispatchers radio interrupted the calm. "11-57 matching 971 description." The radio crackled before picking back up. "11-57 fleeing, Patrol 512 in vehicular pursuit." Another crackle came from the radio: "Patrol 388, pursuing on foot."
The dispatcher adjusted her black framed glasses and lifted her radio. "10-36. Peruse with caution. Suspect in question is an affiliate with Detective L, repeat; do not harm 11-57."
"10-4."
The double glass doors swung open quickly two officers carried a restrained Beyond. His hands bound behind his back with zip ties. The raven thrashing violently and shouting. "Let go of me! I haven't done anything wrong!"
The officers set the teenager down, one stepping back while the other stood in front of him. A heavier set, darker skinned man with shimmering emerald eyes. "No, son, you didn't. Other than assaulting a police officer." His gravely voice chuckled light heartedly as the other officer undid the restraints. "But I think we can let that moment of panic slide. It's okay, son, you're not in trouble. But, there are people here who are very worried about you."
The officer stepped out of the way and Beyond's sanguine stare landed on shimmering golden hair under fluorescent flickering lights, deep ocean eyes that stared in both anger and concern, hands folded in front of him in front of a well fitted blue suit.
Taking a step back the raven could feel a stinging in his eyes as his panic became visible. "No… No! I don't want to go back! You can't make me!" The raven tucked himself behind the larger officer. "Their negligence killed him! They don't care! Why are you even here!?"
Caspian took a step forward. "I'm not here on anyone's orders, I'm here for my own interests." His intense sapphire eyes met timid emeralds, forcing the officer to dodge his eye contact and step out of the way. "You don't want to go back?" Caspian moved forward once again, nearly hitting his knees to the floor. "We don't have to." The blonde reached up and gently touched the teen's cheek. "I didn't come here for anyone else but you, even if Light and L hadn't come, I still was coming for you. We don't have to go anywhere you don't want to. We can even stay here, it won't be easy, but we could."
"So, it is true…" A deep voice called behind the two. "The legendary L himself is here… and with his associates, no less, I almost didn't believe the radio call… I have an interesting proposition for you all." Beyond and Caspian shifted their stares to a tall slender man with shining hazel eyes, tailored grey suit with navy accents, and perfectly slicked back ebony hair. With two men in jet black suits with ear pieces in on either side of him.
7 Years Later…
An elderly man sat in a wicker rocking chair on the porch of the Wammy Manor, a blanket neatly folded over his lap. Moving boxes being carried to a truck by movers. A brunette woman approached the elderly man with a hot cup of tea. "Great grandpa. You did all of those kids good. They all have a wonderful start to life, thanks to you. Proper schooling, universities lined up and a loving role model."
The elder chuckled and smelled the tea with a ghost of a smile. "Not thanks to me, thank to you, Sayu." The older man choked on his words as speaking became harder. "But, I didn't come through for all of them… My boys suffered my arrogance."
Sayu sighed deeply. "Legends never die, Sofu."
Quillish teared up slightly. "They've been gone so long, Sayu, you can't possibly think that it wasn't a suicide mission. I should have just agreed. I knew how important Beyond was to not only L, but to Caspian and Light. Realistically… he was the unstable glue."
Sayu huffed and folded her arms. "Didn't you train Caspian on survival and how to be resourceful?" The older man wiped his tear away and nodded silently. "Do you doubt your training?" Steely blue eyes met an optimistic smile lit by golden eyes and pink cheek. "I believe they're out there. Just like Roger, Matt, Mello and Near." Sayu nibbled on her lip nervously. "But I can't help but question the surroundings of their departure."
Sighing shakily Quillish took a small sip of his tea. "L said he wanted all trainings for a future L to cease, he'd made his choice and no other would replace it. I abstained from training anymore Ls and focused on raising the children who were depending on me. Roger, though… he couldn't let it go. Said we shouldn't squander what was in front of us. We argued that night, before they packed up and left… it was one year after the boys all disappeared… I… I don't even know where they went."
Sayu sighed defeatedly before perking up as a limousine pulled into the drive. "The girls are here! Are you ready great grandpa?"
Quillish glanced at the front door that was still open sadly, becoming misty eyed at the growth marks on it. "I will miss this old house, but if your new career awaits you in Tokyo, I'll be with you every step of the way."
A high pitched blonde poured out of the back of the car followed by a girl with a long pastel pink ponytail. "Sayyyuuuuuu! Sofuuuuu! Come on! We have to catch our flight!"
"Coming Misa!" Sayu pulled the front door closed one last time and helped Quillish into his wheelchair.
Ontario, Canada.
A television within a hotel room played loudly. Mello sneered at the red head. "Turn that shit down."
Matt shook his head. "Look. Wammy Manor is on the news!"
A female brunette news anchor smiled to the camera. "In international news, the longest standing home for gifted children has closed its doors permanently with the only reaming heir joining Misa Amane and Yuki Senji into the glamorous world of being a pop sensation! After the final orphan had aged out and sent to the university of their choosing, Quillish Wammy, a hero and humanitarian closed his doors to aid his great granddaughter in her new career. Best of luck to both of them!"
A blonde news anchorman smiled. "No doubt the €4.6 billion liquidation of the estate will help!"
Near quietly moved chess pieces. "So, L, Light, Beyond and Caspian are still MIA and Sayu is becoming a famous popstar. It's surprising what you miss out on over 6 years.
Mello scoffed and turned the television off. "Those idiots are probably dead."
Roger flinched slightly while reading the newspaper. "Mistake. Never assume your adversary is dead. Always assume they are out there, hunting you. That being said. We have not taken a case from the United States since they've disappeared, either someone tipped the Americans off that the new L isn't the original, or they're hiding somewhere in the states. Matt, I need you to begin reconnaissance immediately, figure out why the United States suddenly no longer needs the assistance of L."
