Mikey and The Puppy

It was midnight in New York when the four turtle brothers were heading home. They'd been out much longer than intended but trouble was a common disruption this night.

Luckily the trouble had been pretty pathetic so far, all the brothers had were bruises and sore muscles.

They had been running for a while when Michelangelo suddenly stopped in his tracks, he frowned. Something wasn't right.

"Keep moving Mikey" Leonardo called as the brothers slowed. "We've had enough fighting for tonight"

"Speak for yourself" Raph smirks, Leo just rolls his eyes.

Mikey ignored them as he wandered to the edge of the roof and looked down at the docks, he couldn't see anyone, but he felt like there was something going down.

The other brothers come to stand by his side.

"What is it?" Leo whispered; he knew by his brother's tense look that he sensed something bad.

"You're seriously humouring him?" Raph asked bluntly, "He probably just smells pizza"

"At the docks?" Donnie raised an eye ridge, "The fishy smell is way too pungent for anything good to power through"

Raph snorts.

"Sh" Mikey and Leo shush much to the middle brothers' surprise.

Suddenly they see the light from a torch coming from behind one of the buildings, someone is heading towards the river.

"Can we get closer Leo?" Mikey asks nervously as he taps his feet, Leo frowned. His brother was getting antsy, this couldn't be good.

"Yeah, follow me" Leo nods, he leads the boys onto the roof the person came out from.

Now that they were closer, they could see the outline of a muscled man, he was cradling something in his arms.

The man stepped to the edge of the dock; Mikey's eyes widened at the whining he could hear.

"He has a dog" He breathed, "He's not gonna- "

Before he could finish the boys watched in horror as the man chucked a small dog with a brick tied to its collar into the water.

Michelangelo didn't think.

He leapt from the roof, dashed passed the man and dove straight into the freezing cold river.

He swam down as fast as he could, his heart broke when he saw the retched creature desperately trying to swim upwards. It looked terrified.

Mikey swam down to the dog.

He noticed the pink collar, no nametag.

The dog looked at him briefly as she continued her struggles, Mikey grabbed her and the brick and swam upwards.

He broke the surface with a gasp and the puppy in his arms cried out in fear and pain, she wanted her master.

"MIKEY!" Donatello grabbed his little brother by the arm and hauled him onto dry land.

"Where'd he go?" Mikey panted as he placed the dog down and tried to untie the knot.

"Legged it" Donnie explained, "Leo and Raph went after him but I think he's gone for good"

"Why would he do that?" Mikey asked angrily as he tried to comfort the trembling thing.

"Coz he was sick" Donnie snarled quietly as he looked over the puppy.

The four brothers hated criminals and villains, it went without saying but the one thing the boys hated most, the thing that truly angered and disgusted them, was animal cruelty. They couldn't stand seeing such innocent creatures in pain from a selfish human.

"She's a pit bull" Donnie frowned, "But she seems very small… My guess is that he bred puppies for dog fights but this little one was the runt of the litter"

"Don't call her that!" Mikey whined; it was a word that the two youngest had often used to describe themselves in the past.

"Sorry" Don patted his brother, "Anyway, we need to get you two home. I don't want you getting sick"

At that moment, Leo and Raph came running back and stopped by their brothers.

"He's gone. The bastard escaped" Raph growled as he clenched his fists, "Dick! I wanted to kill him for that! What kinda sicko goes throwing defenceless animals in freeing rivers!?"

"What kind of silly turtle goes jumping into said freezing rivers?" Leo asked gently as he knelt next to his baby brother. "I get why you did it Mikey but you shouldn't go jumping into unknown bodies of water"

"I didn't think" Mikey admitted.

Leo nods in understanding.

"C'mon" He helped the youngest up, "Home. Now"

The brothers got home safely. Mikey showered and dried himself up, allowing his brothers to take care of the puppy.

When he came out, he found her lying on her belly panting, she seemed stressed and it upset Mikey greatly.

"Hey cutie" Mike smiled as he sat with his brothers, he smiled when the dog waddled over to sit at his feet. "You warmer now?"

"She's all good" Donnie smiled before turning serious. "No nametag and no microchip. No way to find that asshole"

Mikey patted the little puppy's soft white fur, her blue eyes stared up into his and she seemed to calm down.

"Yeah… That's it… You're safe now" He cooed.

"What is this?" Splinter asked as he walked over to greet his sons, confused as to why they hadn't reported to him when they got home.

"Pit bull" Donnie answers as he too pats the pup.

"We found this guy dumping her in the river" Raph scowled at the floor, "He tied a brick to her to make sure she drowned… I didn't get to do the same thing to him"

"It matters not that the man got away" Splinter soothes. "You four have saved this little one's life. That is the best victory"

Donnie makes a strained sound; the family look at him knowing he wanted to say something but clearly didn't at the same time.

"Donnie?" Leo sighed, "Just say it"

"I think we should find the guy" Donnie explained in a pained voice. "We need to notify the police of his whereabouts…"

The family waits for further information.

"I think he breeds pit bulls for dog fights" Donnie finally admits, "He might not but it's worth checking out. Her siblings could be getting trained into dangerous dogs… dogs destined to fight against their will and…"

The brothers stare at Donatello, he so rarely got this frazzled when giving an explanation.

"I have heard of these dog fights" Splinter nodded sadly, "They are disgustingly cruel… but my sons do not be upset if you cannot find this man… we have saved at least one of his dogs."

"Can we keep her?" Mikey asked quietly as he looked up at his father. "She likes us coz we saved her, but I don't think she'll trust humans anymore… plus she's really cute and deserves a loving home!"

Splinter thinks for a moment.

"I am uncertain that would be wise" He explained gently, "She deserves a normal, loving family. One who have a back garden she can play in and parks for her to walk in… other humans and their canine companions she can play with. I know you would like to keep her my children, but it would just not be fair to her, not all humans are evil"

The brothers share a sad look but accept their father's words.

Mikey closes his eyes; he knew his father was right. He felt Donatello shuffle closer to try and offer some comfort to him, his mouth quirked into a weak smile.

A year later the boys sat in the shaded trees of central park, it was an unusually warm evening. They smiled as they watched the young family playing with their dog.

The two woman watched their two children tear around the grass with the dog at their heels.

"C'mon snowy!" The little girl calls, she nearly trips but her older brother grabs her wrist and pulls her behind him.

"C'mon girl! Catch us!" The boy laughs, the dog jumps and they all fall to the ground. The kids shriek with laughter as Snowy licks their faces, her tail wagging madly.

The two wives are laughing too.

The four brothers grin at the fun below.

"I woulda given her a much better name than Snowy" Mikey points out with a smirk.

"You named your cat Klunk" Raph deadpans, the brothers snicker.

"It's good that she has a home… she looks really happy" The youngest sighs contently.

"Yeah" Donnie and Leo nod.

"I'm just glad that guy's in jail" Raph smirked, "All those dogs are much better off now… no more fighting, no more pain… just full bellies and plenty of squeaky toys"

The brothers smile happily.

They continued to watch their dog as she played with her forever family, they wondered if she remembered them.

Their question was soon answered when Snowy ran up to their tree wagging furiously and barking, almost like a thank you.
